From hiking routes, to rich Tibetan culture, to local hamlets that seem like no less than a museum, and every monastery you visit, explains the untamed land that exists in Nepal. Besides, this Upper Mustang Trekking leads you to some high passes, sky caves, and hundreds of years old gompas and villages - allowing you to experience the solitude with a crisp adventure each day.
Tiji Festival (Tenchi): A prayer for world peace
One of the major highlights of trekking in Upper Mustang of Nepal is the "Tiji Festival," which signifies historical myths said to bring blessings and fortune for those offering prayers, and is celebrated every year in Lo Manthang. The date of the Tiji Festival simply changes every year and is held according to the Tibetan Lunar calendar, which is hosted for 3 days straight, and each day marks the victory of an old myth that once "Dorje Jono", summoned the gods and saved the Mustang Kingdom from the destructive evil forces. The locals refer to it as the “Chasing of Demons,” which is highly connected to Tibetan Buddhist traditions.
This festival is celebrated in the form of colorful mask dances, in 3 days, the firstly day begins with, Tsa Cham dance, also known as Tsha Cham dance, which shows the story of the birth of Dorje Jonno, and the second day demonstrates the "Nga Cham" the battle of him, fighting against the evil demons and third day concludes with a defeat of the demon in a symbolic dance called "Rha Cham", throwing the evil spirits from Mustang forever. Each day starts with prayers, dancing, offerings, songs, and musical instruments playing, showing how such mystic culture is celebrated even in the present day at Upper Mustang Valley.
Lo Manthang (Himalaya Kingdom frozen in History)
If you have ever had an urge to experience the rich culture of Tibetan life closely. Then, this adventure fits perfectly for you, where every corner showcases and whispers the ancient Tibetan culture. The capital of Upper Mustang is the city of Lo Manthang, a city stuck in time due to its ancient monasteries with a rich history. Before this city was considered the Kingdom of Lo, which still reflects the same ancient era where there is still a monarchical provision and has followed the same provision to date. Sounds fascinating. Right? In the present day, many people refer to it as a “walled city” where you can feel the white walls and narrow streets reflecting its historical significance.
Throughout your trek, you’ll get meaningful cultural insights and hear many unbelievable, unheard stories by locals in Lomanthang, making the trek full of good surprises. During the 10th Day in Upper Mustang, we’ll pay a visit to Namgyal Gompa and also Ghar Gompa, which is a center for spiritual learning and practice, along with the rich Buddhist sculptures, manuscripts, and artifacts, enhancing the significance of your trek.
The old white houses, monks chanting in the ancient monasteries, colorful Buddhist prayer flags fluttering in the serene semi-arid desert-like paradise, and the warmth and hospitality of local Tibetan people, this is the upper Mustang region of Nepal for you.
Kaligandaki Gorge (the world's deepest gorge) and Sacred Shaligrams

The Holi fossil, regarded as the embodiment of Lord Vishnu, can only be found in this river. It is used for worship in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing a living divine presence, and many individuals come here just to search for this fossil, which can be sold worldwide for a high price. There are many local shops available in many villages where you can buy them at a much lower price. Upper Mustang Trek Permits Updated in 2026
As the Upper Mustang sits near the border of Tibet, it is a restricted area. To trek in this region, there are still three permits required in 2026: the Restricted Area Permit (RAP), the TIMS Card, and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP).
Whereas back then, before 2026, the special restricted area permit used to cost around USD 500 for one person, and if you tend to extend the trek (within the Upper Mustang region) for more than 10 days, then you’ll need to pay an additional USD 50 per day. However, the updated Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (RAP) has now become more flexible and cost-friendly, pricing approx. $ 50 per person per day, following the approach of a "pay as you go" system, making the shorter packages more affordable.
For the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project), foreigners must pay $30, and $15 for SAARC nationals. Without this permit, it is not allowed to enter the conservation area, as this region is situated in the Annapurna Conservation Area. The permit fee directly goes to preserve the natural diversity and maintain the trekking trails. Without these permits, entry into this conservation area is not allowed.
To get through this restricted area and attain the permits for Upper Mustang Trekking, there are major rules set by the government of Nepal:
- You must trek along with at least one other person, and this requirement does not include the guide and porter. This means that there should be a minimum of two trekkers in your group, excluding any hired guides or porters.
- You must apply for permits through a registered local agency for special permits.
- You need to take at least one licensed guide along with you from a local authorized trekking agency.
We, Destination Himalaya Treks and Expedition, will arrange all necessary permits for the trek, soon after the booking is confirmed with us.
