Upper Mustang Trek Overview:

The Upper Mustang Trekking leads you to the mirthful walk around the Tibetan plateau straight out of a folk tale, where the villages are like colorful oases amid high-altitude desert, and ascends to the highest elevation of 3700 meters at Lo Manthang. Our perfectly customized 14-day Upper Mustang Trek passes through several notable villages, dramatic Tibetan landscapes, and unveils the ancient Tibetan culture, with a gradual pace, covering the daily trekking distance of 8 to 12 kilometers, ascending just 300 to 400 meters, ensuring a comfortable and safe hike, with an intellectually planned trip, minimizing the risk of altitude sickness as well.

The region was out of bounds for treks and tours until 1992. Since its initiation, it has been captivating trekkers around the globe for its unique architecture, history, and festivals connected with ancient mythologies that have remained largely unchanged for centuries. If you are an adventure seeker, then venture out on this 14-day trek to Upper Mustang in Nepal, through ancient sky caves, dramatic cliff faces, historical Buddhist monasteries, and villages meandering through the world's deepest gorge of Kali Gandaki.

Our Upper Mustang Trek begins with a pleasant bus drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara along the Trishuli and Marshyangdi Rivers side by side. Upon reaching Pokhara, we’ll be welcomed by majestic views of mountains, including Dhaulagiri, Lamjung, and Hiunchuli Himal, and crystal-clear lakes reflecting those peaks. The next day, we’ll take a flight to Jomsom. Keep your eyesight widely open to the windows as the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna massifs reward you with their spectacular views. Upon landing in Jomsom, we will begin our trek to Kagbeni (2804 m), the gateway to Upper Mustang valley.

As we traverse through the diverse settlements, continuing this trekking in Upper Mustang from Kagbeni to Chele (3050 m), Syangboche (3800 m), Ghami (3520 m), and Tsaran (3570 m) in the following days. We are greeted by a landscape abundant in beauty and culture. Brilliantly painted chortens (Buddhist shrines), mani walls, Deep gorges, unusual, colorful rock formations, and giant hills engraved like the shape of snakes create a magical, otherworldly view. The warmth and hospitality of Thakali, Gurung, and Tibetan along the way add a personal touch, leaving us speechless.

But this is not the end of this magical journey. The heavenly experience awaits us at Lo Manthang, the former Kingdom of Lo, known as the walled city in the Tibetan language, which stands out as the major highlight of this Mustang Trek, surrounded by forts of the Middle Ages and adorned with mani walls. As we wander through its narrow streets, the fluttering prayer flags and the Loba people reciting prayers with beads in hand create a serene and spiritual aura. Make sure to explore the local shops where you can find exquisite Thangka paintings and wood carvings showcasing the abundant heritage and artistry of the Loba community.

After exploring Lomanthang, we return to Dramkar (3820 m) and Ghiling (3806 m) through the same route, from where giant red cliffs and deep canyons can be seen. From Ghiling, the trek continues to Chukksang (3050 m) before descending to Jomsom, where we’ll take a flight back to Pokhara, enjoying the breathtaking Himalayas from above. Finally, we will drive back to Kathmandu, wrapping up our trek to Upper Mustang Valley in Nepal.

What to expect while trekking in Upper Mustang in 2026 and 2027?

While other Himalayan adventures remain quickly accessible, the Upper Mustang region of Nepal is a hidden treasure bordering Tibet-China, and located behind the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Range, known as a mystic land, which lucky ones can get through, as a special permit is required for trekking in the Mustang upper valley.

There would be no doubt that it is a heaven on earth that offers adventure seekers the thrill of conquering the rugged terrains, and explorers the in-depth insight of sky caves, architectural monuments like Egyptian pyramids, without a doubt, of course! and the culture dates back 500 years. The living proof is itself the corners of this region, which you will get to explore during this 14-day Upper Mustang Trek, where every stride meets a unique unveiling of the history and myths circulating here.

Experience the Off-Beaten Adventure in the Modern World

Thinking about an expedition, the first thing that comes to our mind is surely something relaxing in the peaceful territory without any crowded trailhead. Being known as the Trans Himalayan Landscape, the whole Upper Mustang valley is surrounded by the dry Tibetan Plateau, isolated by the hugely towering cliffs, caves, and unusual rock formations, dotted with whitely washed Tibetan houses, which are so pristine that locals are preserving their culture from extinction. This Upper Mustang Trek whisks you across a Tibetan plateau straight from folklore, explores vibrant villages, ancient caves, and Lo Manthang at 3840 m.

As a special restricted permit is required, to date, only a few footprints are marked here, allowing the visitors to venture out on an expedition to witness unspoiled territory, due to which it is renowned as one of the restricted off-beaten trekking trails in Nepal. Unlike Everest Base Camp, where the amenities and route are well facilitated with modern, premium lodging, every step you take defines how the ancient trailhead used to be before modernization took place. From hiking routes, to rich Tibetan culture, to local hamlets that seem like no less than a museum, and every monastery you visit, explains the untamed land that exists in Nepal. Besides, this Upper Mustang Trekking leads you to some high passes, sky caves, and hundreds of years old gompas and villages - allowing you to experience the solitude with a crisp adventure each day.

Tiji Festival (Tenchi): A prayer for world peace

One of the major highlights of trekking in Upper Mustang of Nepal is the "Tiji Festival," which signifies historical myths said to bring blessings and fortune for those offering prayers, and is celebrated every year in Lo Manthang. The date of the Tiji Festival simply changes every year and is held according to the Tibetan Lunar calendar, which is hosted for 3 days straight, and each day marks the victory of an old myth that once "Dorje Jono", summoned the gods and saved the Mustang Kingdom from the destructive evil forces. The locals refer to it as the “Chasing of Demons,” which is highly connected to Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

This festival is celebrated in the form of colorful mask dances, in 3 days, the firstly day begins with, Tsa Cham dance, also known as Tsha Cham dance, which shows the story of the birth of Dorje Jonno, and the second day demonstrates the "Nga Cham" the battle of him, fighting against the evil demons and third day concludes with a defeat of the demon in a symbolic dance called "Rha Cham", throwing the evil spirits from Mustang forever. Each day starts with prayers, dancing, offerings, songs, and musical instruments playing, showing how such mystic culture is celebrated even in the present day at Upper Mustang Valley.

Lo Manthang (Himalaya Kingdom frozen in History)

If you have ever had an urge to experience the rich culture of Tibetan life closely. Then, this adventure fits perfectly for you, where every corner showcases and whispers the ancient Tibetan culture. The capital of Upper Mustang is the city of Lo Manthang, a city stuck in time due to its ancient monasteries with a rich history. Before this city was considered the Kingdom of Lo, which still reflects the same ancient era where there is still a monarchical provision and has followed the same provision to date. Sounds fascinating. Right? In the present day, many people refer to it as a “walled city” where you can feel the white walls and narrow streets reflecting its historical significance.

Throughout your trek, you’ll get meaningful cultural insights and hear many unbelievable, unheard stories by locals in Lomanthang, making the trek full of good surprises. During the 10th Day in Upper Mustang, we’ll pay a visit to Namgyal Gompa and also Ghar Gompa, which is a center for spiritual learning and practice, along with the rich Buddhist sculptures, manuscripts, and artifacts, enhancing the significance of your trek.

The old white houses, monks chanting in the ancient monasteries, colorful Buddhist prayer flags fluttering in the serene semi-arid desert-like paradise, and the warmth and hospitality of local Tibetan people, this is the upper Mustang region of Nepal for you.

Kaligandaki Gorge (the world's deepest gorge) and Sacred Shaligrams

This trip traces along the famous Kali Gandaki River side by side, letting you witness the deepest gorge, Kali Gandaki Gorge. The Holi fossil, regarded as the embodiment of Lord Vishnu, can only be found in this river. It is used for worship in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing a living divine presence, and many individuals come here just to search for this fossil, which can be sold worldwide for a high price. There are many local shops available in many villages where you can buy them at a much lower price. The pilgrimage walk here lifts your heart, soul, and mind, leaving a lasting impression even after the trek ends.

Ancient Sky Caves and Peaks

Being known as the place beyond the mountains, where the wind flows at high speed, and alluring views of majestic mountains such as Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and the Annapurna massif, alongside desert hills, colorful giant rocks, and green hills can be seen from Upper Mustang. Besides these, Mustang is also referred to as a land of caves. Over 10,000 sky caves have been discovered here so far, where people lived as far back as 800 BC until 1400 AD.

Several caves, such as Jhong Cave and Shija Jhong Cave, have a great spiritual connection, which attracts many foreigners who come here for meditation purposes and seek spiritual solace. It is also believed that these sky caves in Mustang bring prosperity, happiness, and protect locals from dangers, captivating individuals to seek blessings. During our Mustang Trekking, we’ll pay visits to many ancient caves and monasteries with high spiritual significance that make your trek a lifetime journey.

Breathtaking Scenic Mountain Flights to and from Jomsom

This Upper Mustang Trek itinerary also includes the flight from and to Jomsom, from where you can witness the exhilarating beauty of Pokhara hills and lakes through a window seat. Well! If you think about how such a small aircraft of only 25 to 40 minutes offers the enchanting view, as well as the flight begins, you will be treated with the prominent view of Mt. Fishtail, Nilgiri, and Manaslu, which stretches to the iconic mountains of Annapurna and the Dhaulagiri range. As time passes by, the marvelous transition of such highlands changing into unusual rock formations in the shade of red and orange in the dry Tibetan plateau, like Mars, will surely amuse you.

Nonetheless, from the beginning to the end of 14 days impeccable journey to Mustang, the thrill of adventure hits you, and the rich tapestry of culture showers you, reminding you that you are not in Paris or Wembley Stadium but somewhere so tranquil that it seems like you have been time-traveled to your past lives.

There are countless reasons why, and to summarize in the top 10, here are some fascinating reasons to trek to Upper Mustang that will surely make you want to leave the crowded, scheduled life behind and make your way to the Himalayas ASAP!!

Upper Mustang Trek Permits Updated in 2026

As the Upper Mustang sits near the border of Tibet, it is a restricted area. To trek in this region, there are still three permits required in 2026: the Restricted Area Permit (RAP), the TIMS Card, and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP).

Whereas back then, before 2026, the special restricted area permit used to cost around USD 500 for one person, and if you tend to extend the trek (within the Upper Mustang region) for more than 10 days, then you’ll need to pay an additional USD 50 per day. However, the updated Upper Mustang Restricted Area Permit (RAP) has now become more flexible and cost-friendly, pricing approx. $ 50 per person per day, following the approach of a "pay as you go" system, making the shorter packages more affordable.

For the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project), foreigners must pay $30, and $15 for SAARC nationals. Without this permit, it is not allowed to enter the conservation area, as this region is situated in the Annapurna Conservation Area. The permit fee directly goes to preserve the natural diversity and maintain the trekking trails. Without these permits, entry into this conservation area is not allowed.

To get through this restricted area and attain the permits for Upper Mustang Trekking, there are major rules set by the government of Nepal:

  • You must trek along with at least one other person, and this requirement does not include the guide and porter. This means that there should be a minimum of two trekkers in your group, excluding any hired guides or porters.
  • You must apply for permits through a registered local agency for special permits.
  • You need to take at least one licensed guide along with you from a local authorized trekking agency.

We, Destination Himalaya Treks and Expedition, will arrange all necessary permits for the trek, soon after the booking is confirmed with us.

If you're considering other Upper Mustang packages, alternative ways to explore the Tibetan-influenced territory, or a break from the classic trekking trail, we offer two exceptional alternatives. These let you experience the magic of this region in a fresh, unforgettable way.

Upper Mustang with Nar Phu Trek

The Upper Mustang Trek with Nar Phu stands out as a thrilling 20-day expedition into the best-kept secret of the twin valleys, Nar and Phu, along the valley of the forbidden kingdom at the same time. The route first explores the restricted area of the Upper Mustang region, then unveils the majestic, remote Tibetan plateau of the wild Nar Phu, visits ancient Lo Manthang, and crosses the high passes of Kang La at 5320 meters, the highest altitude. Compared to the mustang trail, extending this route to the high pass adds more remote exploration of the twins valley, with tougher acclimatization challenges, perfect for seasoned hikers craving deeper cultural immersion and an epic high-altitude odyssey.

Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Tour

The Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Tour is marked as an 12 days journey, mainly focused on individuals who want to experience the thriving festival of Tiji, which is celebrated for three straight 3 days, letting you be a part of the festival rituals, songs, masked dances, and prayers performed by local monks. According to the Lunar calendar, the Tiji Festival will be held from 14th May to 16th May in 2026, whereas the itinerary is customized accordingly.

Upper Mustang Overland Tour

As, currently, the roadway from Kathmandu to Pokhara has been developed and well maintained, it might take 6 to 7 hours; however, if you want to avoid the long-hour drive and save time, then you can choose the flight transportation to Pokhara of 25 to 30 minutes. From Pokhara to reach Jomsom, the journey continues with a domestic flight on the very next day, and the trek initiates from Jomsom following Kagbeni and reaches the highest elevation at Lo Manthang (3840 meters).

Our 14 Days Upper Mustang Trek package includes all your vehicle costs from Kathmandu to Pokhara, then to Jomsom, and then return cost from Jomsom to Pokhara, followed by Kathmandu back, hence, extra costing isn't required.

What is the best time to visit the Upper Mustang valley?

In general, the ideal seasons for undertaking any expeditions here are Spring and Autumn; despite the fact, this trekking in Mustang can also be done in monsoon and winter as well, which tends to be one of the major perks of being located within a rainshadow area. However, if you are a beginner and want to undertake this trek to Upper Mustang, then you shall choose between mid-March to May, and September to November as the climatic conditions match the temperature perfectly, making the trip easier and smoother to navigate with no challenges.

Nonetheless, every four seasons trekking in Upper Mustang valley features something unique and distinct, where one can truly immerse oneself in the rich culture and breathtaking views of landscapes, in an enchanting way.

What to expect in Spring (March to May)?

In Upper Mustang, the whole valley is thrived with wild flowers and blooms along the colorful flora, making the rugged trailhead pleasing to gaze over during the hike. Just walk down the alley, enjoying the cultivation of agricultural plants and vegetation of a Mediterranean-like climate, and lavender, you can truly expect the unexpected while meandering around this timeframe. The temperature is mild and less windy, which means it is easier to trail with a stunning vista of the Himalayas as a backdrop and various flowers, including rhododendrons and wild alpine flowers, bloom perfectly, adding a vibrant tone to nature.

Apart from all of the perks, the main highlighted part about Upper Mustang Tour in spring is that, the main festival that is celebrated here every year, by the loba (Tibetan Buddhsim) community falls - Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang falls in between these months, hence, if your holiday timing matches with the festive season, then you should not miss out this season of Spring.

What to expect in Autumn (September to November)?

Autumn is regarded as another suitable and ideal time to explore Upper Mustang valley, as the clear views of stunning landscapes, hills, and crystal clear skies due to moderate temperatures make the overall expedition perfect to begin with. Even though it is also known as the peak time of the year, you can see fewer footprints and meet fewer hikers along the trail, as Dashain-Tihar falls between these months. YES! You might feel like, how festive season makes the route quieter, what happens is at this peak season, many individuals avoid hiking and rather spend time with their family, rather than hiking. Hence, if you want a serene environment to get immersed in and also love to be part of the culture of locals, well then, Autumn is definitely for you.

What to expect in Monsoon and Winter?

Well! If it were any other trek, in Nepal, to be honest, these months are usually considered the off-season and tough to even complete that, within the restricted area. However, as this region sits in a rain shadow area, with a bare minimum chnace of rainfall, even at the high precipation season like monsoon and summer (June to August), so you can ease yourself and venture out on the Upper Mustang Trekking in monsoon easily without thinking much about what kind of climatic condition to expect and tracking weather forecast every time. The weather simply remains dry, with just a little bit of a spark of raindrops, which makes the trip even more lovely, hiking with mild humidity.

Regarding the winter span of the year, if you are opting for high passes as well, then make sure to plan your itinerary accordingly, as the pathway remains mostly blocked, and the last part is concerning! During winter, the accessibility of the tea house is relatively low, as the locals in the higher trails close their lodging service and head down to the lower sections. Nonetheless, if you are an adventure seeker, then you should commence this expedition in winter and the monsoon.

We at Destination Himalaya Treks always look forward to making your expedition. No matter what timeframe you choose, we'll craft the itinerary accordingly, so despite of your holiday duration and timing, you can complete the expedition. To know more about the seasonal pros and cons, you can read our blog about: Best time for Upper Mustang Trekking.

Difficulty Level

Located at such a high elevation of 3840 meters and also being situated in an isolated and restricted area in Nepal, the Upper Mustang Trek falls under a moderate difficulty level. Nevertheless, if you want to explore the rugged terrains and the Himalayan dry Tibetan plateau landscape, despite being your age or having prior experience, this trek surely can be completed with ease.

Situated in the rain shadow area, you can expect the unexpected climatic conditions, which remain the same and dry throughout the year with less chance of rainfall, so it opens the gateway to every enthusiastic hiker having a proper mindset, and yes, a basic level of physical fitness.  However, temperature can drop significantly between day and night, resulting in extremely windy conditions. So, you must be prepared for any unexpected weather changes.

Although the trek doesn’t demand any prior experience, a basic fitness level to make it through for a long duration of almost 5-6 hours is a must. Sometimes, you must trail through steep ascents and narrow gorges. Daily hours of a minimum of 4 hours are expected while embarking on a trek to Upper Mustang. Trekkers with average physical fitness and good health conditions can complete this trek without any challenges, so do not settle back just because it is situated in an isolated area with limited amenities.

Proper preparation and guidance before heading to the Mustang Trek is crucial to make this trek completely hassle-free. So, we recommend you participate in cardio, daily hikes, and physical training months before starting the trek. Also, it is highly advised to take necessary health tests and include high-altitude trekking while arranging your travel insurance policy to avoid any kind of adverse situation. To know more in a detailed way, you can check our recently posted blog: Upper Mustang Difficulty Level, which breaks down the difficulty level and also emphasises some tips to navigate easily.

Risk of Altitude Sickness and Acclimatisation Days

The foremost concern for any trek that is situated at such an elevation is altitude sickness, as no one wants to face the hassle during the trip and ruin the expedition. Meanwhile, while trekking in Upper Mustang, the risk of such AMS factors would be minimal, as the highest elevation it reaches is at Lo Manthang - 3840 meters, which doesn't touch the height of 4000 meters, so you can undertake this hike at ease.

On top of that, our Upper Mustang Trek itinerary is set with a gradual ascent of 400 to 500 meters, with a slow to medium level of pace, so you can gradually adapt to the rising elevation, without any challenges of thin air. Ascending at such a steady speed helps in getting used to and adjusting to the unusual air at the Himalayas and makes it easier to take an uphill walk at high altitude. Our expert teams have set this Upper Mustang Trek 14 days, ensuring that every level of trekker can smoothly complete this remote area trek with ease.

Even though the risk of Acute Mountain Sickness is minimal, there are some preventive guidelines that you must follow. That being said, it is always better to follow the preventive measures and be prepared accordingly, rather than regretting later.

  1. If you feel any sort of discomfort, such as a rapid heartbeat, which happens due to low oxygen, difficulty in breathing, feeling like vomiting or nausea, a severe level of headache, or skin turning completely pale, then inform the guide immediately, or your fellow hikers, or someone nearby.
  2. At every stopping point, try to watch over the oxygen level and pulse rate using an oximeter, and if it goes below the normal level, then please inform the guide immediately.
  3. Do not rush yourself and try to make your way at your own pace. Sometimes, we might panic or feel excited about meeting the pace of other hikers. But, please remember that every hiker has their own prior experience, and not everyone matches the pace of others, so walk slowly as per the itinerary and do not overdo it.
  4. Please remember that the Upper Mustang region of Nepal is located in one of the most isolated sections, with some undergoing construction, or you can say a risky trailhead that is affected by landslides, so make sure to walk with a guide. Follow the navigation of the guide as he knows every corner and leads you through safe sections.
  5. Avoid undertaking any alcohol or caffeine in high levels, or even cigarettes, as it can make your heart beat go faster and more rapidly, making you lose control, and also lead to a high chance of severe AMS.

Is Upper Mustang Trekking suitable for beginners?

Yes, even though trekking in Upper Mustang isn't an easy Himalayan adventure, located in an isolated region, if you have a moderate or even basic level of physical fitness, then, as a beginner, this trek can surely be completed smoothly.

Even though the terrain does include several uphill and continuous descents through rugged and barren landscapes, at several points, however, it doesn't include several high mountain passes, steep rocky trails (only a few), or has the possibility of rainfall, which makes the trailhead completely dry and easy to navigate through. Hence, this trip to Upper Mustang is doable for beginners as well; however must ensure that physical preparedness is done beforehand, to hike 5 to 6 hours per day, and an itinerary is set as per their level of pace and experiences.

We at Destination Himalaya Treks and Expedition have crafted this 14-day Upper Mustang Tour package with the guidance of a professional expert, with slow ascent through well-marked trails, ensuring that beginners can easily venture on this trip with ease. On the other hand, our experienced trekking licensed guides are there to assist you throughout the route, and are medically equipped, hence, if any unfortunate challenges occur, then they become your 1st helping hand.

Jeep Tour Vs Trekking: Which option is better?

No matter whether you choose Mustang Trek or an overland jeep tour, both are equally fascinating and adventurous journeys, and which one is ideal among both depends on many factors, such as duration, experiences, and the budget of individuals.

If you are a beginner, having literally zero high altitude experiences, and unfamiliar with the remote and varied terrains, then the Jeep Tour suits you perfectly. It cuts off long trekking hours, total duration (minimising 3-4 days), and only includes a side excursion, a short walking tour of 45 mins - 1 hour during visiting monasteries, exploring Lo Manthang, which tends to be comfortable, smooth, and easy going for first timers. During the jeep tour, you will be provided a comfortable 4WD AC Jeep that fits upto 5 other passengers, with an experienced driver and a tour guide.

On the other hand, the Upper Mustang Trekking gives a deeper exploration, a long navigation tour, visits more monasteries, sky caves that fall, along the route, and a trail along the salt trade terrains, making the overall journey more thrilling and quite challenging, giving an off-beaten trail experience. What makes the trek more worth undertaking is that you get to meet many locals in between, experience their daily livelihood, like engaging in farming, animal husbandry, and some kind of rituals, which makes the trip more like a cultural navigation with the accompaniment of Tibetan locals, and the thundering Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range.

Trip Grade: Fitness, Medical, and Wellness

Take note that trekking to Mustang in Nepal is still considered one of the most challenging, wild, and raw trips in the mountains and isolated area, which tests your endurance level, challenges you every second, and is filled with a roller coaster ride for sure! To ensure that your expedition becomes a hassle-free adventure, here are the trip grade details for this high altitude adventure, from fitness requirements to medical considerations, which you should definitely consider before setting foot into this valley. Whether you are a seasoned trekker, these guidelines set you up for success.

Physical Fitness

The trip demands a moderate fitness level, or you can say at least a basic physical fitness, which can undertake a 5-6 hrs hike daily, rather than extreme technical skills. There are no technical sections that require specific knowledge or gear; however, you will come across diverse terrains via rugged, steep, and rocky pathways as well, through several uphill and downhill walks. Even though the trek is not dangerous, and commences by moderate fit hikers, it passes through isolated and remote areas, with huge cliffs, landscapes, and Tibetan plateau surroundings, which sometimes might be too overwhelming for beginners, or even experienced ones, with no proper research. So, ensure to engage in cardio sessions or weekend hikes to boost your stamina, and also, do research about the trailhead, which keeps you motivated and also builds your confidence.

Medical Precautions

Before heading towards this adventure, please pay 100% attention to your health and medical conditions to prevent any health issues, as the Mustang region accessibility is limited and remote, immediate access to health care isn’t easy there so it is highly recommended to do a whole body check-up right before embarking on this journey and be prepared accordingly to the guidelines of a doctor. Mainly check if you have any problem regarding heart, asthma, pregnancy, diabetes, lungs, and disclose all conditions to your guide, and with our tea, for customised itineraries, and on-trail medical support.

Mind Clarity

A clear, positive, resilient mindset is your secret weapon that fights against altitude fatigue, physical drain, isolation and unpredictable weather conditions. While planning the trek, engage in meditation, yoga, and visualisation to sharpen your focus, stay relevant and consistent throughout. If any uncertain situations occur, then do not panic, embrace the mental challenges, vast emptiness, and see it as a self-reflection and growth opportunity.

Is a Private Guided Trek (Solo) in Upper Mustang 2026 possible?

Yes, with a new solo permit update of restricted areas that happened just in March 2026, trekking to Upper Mustang, or any restricted zones or regions of Nepal, allows a solo private guided trek, removing the strict two minimum rules, benefiting the lone hikers who do not seek group joins. Solo travellers can now book private trips; however, independent hiking is still not possible, where the hikers must hire a licensed, experienced trekking guide via a local travel agency like Destination Himalaya Treks, where you no longer have to join larger groups.

With this updated initiative enforced by the Government of Nepal and Nepal Tourism Board, which promotes solo trekkers worldwide, it offers flexibility, personalised pacing, and cultural one-to-one insights and navigation assistance from the guide, ensuring safety and experiences in such remote regions. Thus, a solo private guided trek is a hundred per cent possible in 2026, without forcing group join, or hike, for the solo hikers, who crave lone time.

Guides and Porters

For the trek to Upper Mustang valley, it is compulsory to hire an experienced licensed guide; without the assistance of the guide, the trip is impossible. To acquire permits, you must hike along with the trekking guide through a local trekking operator. While opting for our package, you will be guided by an experienced English-speaking licensed guide carrying more than 10+ years of experience on the trailhead, ensuring that the trek is navigated through a safe route, avoiding the natural hazards area, like landslides and risky sections.

At the same time, our guides are medically equipped as well and trained, hence, in case any unfortunate condition occurs, they become your first helping hand, ensuring immediate medical service to you. As any Himalayan adventure doesn't only mean gazing at the mountains and attaining new heights, the trip becomes more meaningful when you get to know more about the background, history, and culture. Our guides ensure that you also get to know about the hidden value that the landscapes, mountains, local festivals, cultures, and monasteries carry, as they provide a brief description about every corner gem and treasure of the region.

In addition, a strong porter is also included in our package, who will take care of your duffel bags and weights as well, who can carry up to 25 kgs of weight on a sharing basis between two trekkers, which ensures that your trip becomes a hassle-free journey, rather than always worrying about big weights and shoulders 24 hours. Being a registered trekking agency, it becomes our duty to ensure that your trip in Upper Mustang becomes a smooth ride without any challenges, with the best teams.

Accommodation Facilities

The primary lodging facilities along the Upper Mustang Trekking route are mostly teahouses/ guesthouses with comfortable enough basic amenities. Every lodge that trekkers will be staying in is run by the local family of this region. So, don’t expect a lot of luxury facilities in their guest houses. Although everything is basic, you will get clean, hygienic, and warm hospitality after long hours of trekking.

Rooms are simple with single or twin beds, with one sitting table, and include room service for meals as well. But, we highly recommend you dine in the kitchen area, as it has a big shared fire heater to warm you up. In the lower sections of this trek, it is common to get an attached bathroom in a room. But as you go into the upper regions, it is quite hard to get one and costs double the price. Nonetheless, if pre-booking is done earlier, the room with a connected bathroom can be arranged in some sections while trekking in Upper Mustang.

The extra charge must be paid for the use of facilities like a hot water bucket for showering and laundry in the guesthouse. Electricity is in the form of solar power, it costs $4 to 5$, depending on the hour, as rooms don’t have any cables to plug in for charging. So, it is always best to carry a power bank/ capacitor along with you.

Foods and Drinking Facilities

Throughout the Upper Mustang Journey, you’ll receive three meals per day with a wide range of menu options consisting of Asian and Western cuisines that cater to the tastes of all the people trekking to the region. Although every teahouse serves a variety of cuisines, we also highly recommend trying their local foods such as Tibetan bread with Tibetan salt tea, Thukpa, and many others that reflect their Tibetan culture.

On the breakfast menu, there are many options available, such as toast, omelette, hot porridge with milk, noodle soup, Nepali spiced tea, coffee, and lemon tea, which are provided as your choice before the hike. During lunch and dinner, the foods are made according to your preferences from the menu, including Dal Bhat, ramen, Nepali noodles, fried rice, non-veg and veg curry, dry meats, Thenduk, momo, noodles, apple pie, pasta, etc. So, you don’t have to worry about food throughout the trek. Just make sure to eat fully to increase your stamina for walking.

It is highly recommended to have Dal Bhat during lunch or dinner. This Nepali food is full of nutrients. Along with rice, you will get lentils, curry, and green vegetables with pickles, and the amazing part is you can refill this as much as you can without any extra charge. So, it is highly preferred by trekkers.

Note: Although the region has a variety of foods and drinks available, we highly advise you to avoid any kind of alcoholic beverages or caffeinated items to prevent altitude sickness. It is kindly advised to drink hot soups (essential), ginger tea, lemon tea, black tea, and hot lemon water, which help to warm your body in cold temperatures.

Situated in the northwestern part of Nepal, surrounded by the huge towering Annapurna and Dhaulagiri range, bordered by Tibet, Upper Mustang Valley, sits itself, at the isolated, restricted, and remote territory, where trekking trail leads you to the highest elevation at Lo Manthang (3800 m), known as the Walled City of Nepal.

The starting point of the Upper Mustang Trek is from Jomsom and ends in Jomsom as well. You’ll take a flight to Pokhara and return to Kathmandu by bus or jeep.

Being located at the isolated restricted area and lasting almost two weeks of adventure within such a remote territory, the trek to Upper Mustang is a challenging, strenuous adventure, demanding a strong physical fitness to undertake 5-6 hours of hiking pace via varied terrains. Besides, what makes this trip more difficult is the navigation through the rugged, steep, and, all the way, remote, surrounded by the Tibetan dry plateau, with no access to the outside world and limited facilities, which can be frustrating to some, who haven't engaged in the research beforehand, and completely unaware regarding how the himalayan, trailhead seems like. Meanwhile, being well prepared, having a well-crafted itinerary, and comprehensive packing gear and essentials, this trek is smooth to navigate; it all depends on how well prepared you are.

Following the standard trekking trail, the highest elevation of the Upper Mustang valley stands out as Lo Manthang, which soars at 3800 meters above sea level.

As the Upper Mustang Trekking takes you to such a high elevation at 3800 meters, with a hiking trail above 3000 meters, in such thin air, the risk of altitude sickness is always there if proper preventive guidelines are not followed thoroughly. Thus, make sure that you follow a gradual pace, without going beyond your limitations, and undertake the journey at a moderate pace, hydrate well with 3-4 liters of water per day, avoid smoking and alcoholic beverages, and most importantly, try to check your pulse rate, via an oximeter in each stopping point. As our 14-day Upper Mustang Trek itinerary, compasses, gradual ascent, with only 300-400 meters of altitude gain each day, the possible risk of AMS is rare; however, following preventive guidelines is crucial.

This trek normally takes 14 to 17 days to complete depending on your itinerary. It is also possible to complete the Upper Mustang Trek within a week through a jeep tour. However, this option is highly discouraged, as proper acclimatization is often not achieved during a jeep tour, which can lead to altitude sickness.

Daily, this trek demands a daily pace of hiking from 5 to 7 hours, depending on the route and pace level, covering the maximum distance of 14 kilometers per day, after flying from Pokhara to Jomsom, from where the walking trailhead officially gets started.

The Upper Mustang Valley is located in the restricted area, protected by the Annapurna Conservation Area, to protect the off-beaten trekking route, tibetan influenced cultures and traditions, the unique desert-aird topography, and most importantly, as it is close to the Tibet-Nepal border, making it untouched by a huge number of visitors, as special, restricted area permit, is required to get access through the trekking trail.

Being situated in the isolated restricted trekking trail, there are two permits required for this adventure, firstly, the Restricted Area Permit (RAP), which can only be attained through a registered licensed local trekking agency, with a rule followed by hiking along with an experienced trekking guide, and a minimum of two hikers, along the route. Whereas, another permit is the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit, as it is located within the Annapurna region rain shadow area.

As per the new updated rule, the Upper Mustang restricted area permit cost, which used to be priced at USD 500 for the first 10 days following, has been replaced by the new rule, costing only USD 50 per day, per person. While the new permit rate might sound a bit expensive, it has made the shorter trips more affordable. For instance, if you are staying just a week, within the Upper Mustang region, it only costs USD 350 per person, which was initiated with the motive for promoting local economics, tourism, and also sustainability. After the booking is confirmed, we at Destination Himalaya Treks and expedition arranges the required permits, soon after your booking is confirmed with us.

Yes, even though the route to Upper Mustang in Nepal is considered one of the challenging routes in the Himalayas, following the streneous varied of trailheads, to navigate through, and demanding a strong physical fitness and mindset, it can surely be completed by first-time hikers as well; however, it requires prior preparations, planning, and packing essentials as well. The trailhead is equipped with modern, luxury amenities,  and compared to other restricted areas, which beginners can easily accommodate into, without much of a hassle, meanwhile, the safety guidelines must be followed to avoid the dangerous aspect and risk of high altitude sickness.

The internet connectivity and phone network are very poor in the Upper Mustang. But, in the lower regions, they are stable. By paying extra charges at teahouses, satellite connections are there but may or may not work. Using a local sim card, an internet facility can also be used in the lower regions.

As the trek is done in remote areas, there are only a few settlements or tea houses in this region. In the lower section, you will get a room with an attached bathroom. But as you go higher, the facilities will be limited. In the upper region of this trek, you will get a room with 2 beds with a shared bathroom due to the limited rooms available. While accommodating in lodges, you will get basic facilities including Wi-Fi, communication, hot water, and charging, so there’s nothing to worry about.

Drinking water is easily available at the teahouse/lodges. You can buy a mineral water bottle but you should do proper disposal of plastic bottles. You can also fill boiled water at teahouses paying extra charges. Always carry a water bottle and water purification medicine to prevent unwanted health issues.

If you are doing the trek with the proper guidance and a professional guide then you are good to go despite your age. Many people from 12 years old to 60+ old generations have done this adventurous trek to this region without any challenges. A proper mental set and a basic level of fitness would be okay for this trek. But the only thing that needs to be taken care of is altitude sickness, and getting enough acclimatization properly.

When it comes to Porter, it isn’t completely necessary to hire. But, if you are a beginner then it is highly advised to take a porter along with you to carry your trekking bag. Even if you are a professional trekker, hiring a porter helps you to enjoy the trip without any difficulties. Carrying the bag for continuously 14 days is not an easy task.

The health of the porters and the comfort of our clients are our main priorities. All the arrangements for this trek in the upper Mustang are done on this basis. The luggage limitation of the porter is an average of 20 to 24 kg. One luggage or duffle bag of 2 trekkers is carried by one porter (1 porter for 2 people). Hence, the luggage limitation per person is a maximum of 10 to 12 kg in this trek.

Yes, hiring a guide is the first thing any trekkers must do through a local authorized trekking agency for safety purposes. Trekking to remote areas means the possibilities of unseen challenges. If you hire a professional guide then, he will not only show you the trekking route but also accompany you ensuring safety and comfort throughout your trek in Mustang region.

No, as this region lies in a restricted area. Several rules must be followed to trek in the upper Mustang. Trekking solo is strictly prohibited. You must trek with at least one other person, excluding the guide and porter. To make it clear, there are a minimum of 2 trekkers required in the group and that doesn’t count the porter and guide.
