The Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill itinerary in Nepal begins with a drive to Birethanti via Lumle and Nayapul, following the Bhurungdi River. Then, the trail goes uphill to Ulleri on the same day, our first overnight stay within the Annapurna region. Leaving the village, the hike continues toward Ghorepani village on the very next day.

Ascending an early morning hike to Poon Hill (3210 m./9350 ft.), we head toward Tadapani via Deurali and Banthanti. What to expect on the Poon Hill ABC Trek in 2026 and 2027?

The trek to Annapurna Base Camp and Ghorepani Poon Hill is marked as one of the best trending, easy combined routes in the himalayas, that reaches two iconic vantage points, first at Poonhill view point (3210 m) and then, at the sanctuary, the lap of the world’s 10th tallest peak, Annapurna I, perched at 4130 meters. Unlike other hectic and demanding strenuous wild treks, it is smooth going and doable by everyone, with proper preparations, welcoming family hikers, beginners, and even senior citizens.

Mountain Views

Throughout the journey, several gigantic peaks, including Annapurna and the Dhaulagiri range, become your friend, rising high in the clear skies, just behind the backdrop of the blooming red rhododendrons. Whereas reaching Poon Hill, known as one of the best Annapurna viewpoints, rewards you with the sunrise vista over the mountains, such as the Annapurna massif (I-IV), Annapurna South, Macchapuchare (Mt. Fishtail), Hiunchuli, and Dhaulagiri.

As you move higher, the landscapes change from forest woodland lush area to the rugged and brown shaded patterned, with the towering Annapurna wall and Fishtail, just at the front. Reaching the highest at the ABC itself, the panoramic 360-degree Annapurna range, Gangapurna, and other satellite snowcapped peaks leave you awe-struck.

Rich Cultural Encounters

Apart from just the views, on the Ghorepani Poon Hill ABC route, you get to experience the rich cultures of the diverse communities of Gurung and Magar, traditional mountain villages, and the himalayan livelihood, and how their life revolves around agriculture, running tea houses, and simple basic things. The trail passes through several villages such as Chhomrong, Ghandruk, Tadapani, and Ghorepani, with diverse ethnic groups, along with Gurung and Magar, where their language, attire, foods, customs, and traditions are completely different. You’ll also navigate via a Buddhist-influenced trail, dotted with mani walls, small monasteries (gompas), chortens, and prayer flags, which signifies the local belief and spirituality.

Pristine Flora and Wildlife

The trail explores the iconic Annapurna Conservation Area, taking a deeper insight into the blooming red rhododendrons, pines, oaks, and bamboo groves, with the chirping sounds of birds passing by, small rivers, cascading waterfalls, and wooden bridges, alongside. Wandering around the lush green meadows, there is a high possibility of encountering the pristine wildlife, such as the Himalaya Tahr, the elusive red panda, musk deer, langur monkeys, and the himalayan monal, Danfe, Nepal’s national bird. The hidden streams and old stone paths in between villages, and the terraced farms, with yaks grazing around Ghandruk, Tadapani, and Chhomrong, with farmers and mules transporting goods, make the odyssey a complete, wholesome.

Essential Information

How hard is the Annapurna Base Camp with Poon Hill Trek?

The ABC Trek via Poon Hill route falls under easy to moderately challenging trekking trails in Nepal, which covers two vantage points, one at 3210 meters, and another at the sanctuary itself, at 4130 meters. Although it is a high altitude journey, this trip is neither easy nor too hard, that doesn't include any hazard sections or technical terrains, making it smoothly achievable, with basic fitness and prior preparations, by any group, and first timers as well.

The first half of this combined trip visits the Poon Hill trail with the straightforward track along some stairs with several ascents and descents, of course! But it wouldn’t be a big deal. It doesn’t have an uneven terrain or a leg-trembling long-duration hike; however, it can be a bit challenging on the very first day, as you have to ascend towards Ulleri with a stone staircase, with a continuous uphill trail, for 3-4 hours of hiking. If you have a basic level of fitness, then the distance coverage of 8 to 9 kilometres won't be an issue.

The second half goes for the Annapurna Base Camp trail after descending to Tadapani, where the trails consist of numerous up and downhills with some rugged, steep sections along the way. However, in the case of an inclined uphill walk, it is not difficult but surely demands some pre-preparation and a basic level of fitness. The terrains at the higher elevation pass through rough sections, whereas, after hitting above 3500 meters, you might feel the rise in altitude gain, with thinning air, so make sure to follow the preventive measures from the very beginning of the trip.

All in all, this combined ABC Poon Hill hike falls under a moderate adventure which can be done by beginners, families, walking along with kids, with proper preparations and comprehensive packing essentials, matching all seasonal variations.

Altitude Sickness: Risks and Preventive Guidelines

After crossing an elevation of over 3000 meters, altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), is quite expected. Although the highest altitude that this trip reaches tends to be at 4130 meters, at the Annapurna Base Camp itself, the risk of AMS is relatively low. You might be concerned about why it is so.

Our Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill itinerary is set with a gradual ascent of only 200 to 300 meters per day, crafted by the pro expert team, where every day there is a significant rise in altitude, so we can gradually adapt to the rising elevation and ascend without facing the difficulty of AMS. Hence, the possibility of altitude sickness remains minimal, which is a major concern for every hiker, with slow and intellectual ascent, letting your body acclimate to such massive elevation gain.

Here are some of the preventive measures you should follow to avoid the risk of altitude sickness from the very beginning.

  • Make sure to hydrate yourself with 3 litres of water per day, if possible. If that sounds too much, then have soupy food for lunch and dinner, which would help to nourish the body and avoid mouth dryness.
  • If you are quite concerned or unsure about the AMS, then carry "Diamox", which alters the blood PH and increases respiratory rate, which is most effective for non-experienced hikers.
  • Do not rush things and walk at your own pace, slowly adjusting to the elevation shift. If you feel any mild symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, nausea (feeling like vomiting and headache), dizziness (losing control or faintness), and most importantly, insomnia (feeling completely uneasy to get sleep), then please inform the guide quickly as soon as possible.
  • Carrying ginger food items, such as dry ginger (found in markets) or ginger soup, makes the body warm and avoids the coldness of rising elevation.

Preparations for the trek

No matter how experienced or novice a hiker you are, preparations remain one of the crucial aspects for the Himalayan odyssey, to make it easy going and hassle-free, and it remains the same for this trek as well. What makes your trip successful is not only about your trekking guide or the agency arranging the requirements and logistics; it's all upto you, how well you prepare, before the journey starts. Here are some of the most important considerations and ways to be prepared for this excursion:

  • Discuss your experiences, pace level, and preferences with the expert teams to tailor the dates, durations and side trips that are comfortable for you.
  • Start engaging in cardiovascular exercises, such as running, walking, cycling, or completing 10,000 steps per day, to set a basic fitness level and slowly build up your strength through workouts, focusing on legs and shoulders, which helps for long hikes. You can also do short hikes, nearby on Saturday or Sunday, near your home, for 4-5 hours.
  • Do a full body checkup, especially lungs and heart, ensuring that you can handle the high altitudes, thinning air, and take suggestions and guidelines from your trusted doctor.
  • Do proper, comprehensive research about the trip, know about the trails, tea houses, terrain conditions and keep the realistic expectations accordingly.
  • While packing the gears and equipment, rather than packing all the clothes, pack it lightly and only fit in what are essentials, according to the seasonal conditions.
  • Before you leave for Nepal, leave your phone contact number, agency details, and itinerary with your day-to-day itinerary with your family or someone you are close to, for emergency communication.
  • Get travel insurance, if possible, from your own home country, covering all essentials, such as medical expenses, injuries, theft, trip delays, cancellations and most importantly, the helicopter evacuation up to 5000 meters.
  • Before departing for the trek, address your health issues, any concerns, allergic to meals or anything, or something related to health, with the trekking guide and the agency as well.
  • Estimate the budget for personal expenses, for the drinks, extra meals, snacks, souvenirs, and carry the cash accordingly, estimating expenses on a day-to-day basis, and limit the cash; do not carry more than $500 (chances of theft or loss) for just personal spending on the trail. You can do the money exchange later in Pokhara, if required, after the trip concludes.

Best Time to Visit Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill

The ideal seasonal span of the year, during which anyone can undertake this Annapurna Base Camp Trek with Poon Hill, is the whole year, as it is an all-seasonal hike. However, the best seasons are Spring (March-April) and Autumn (October-November). The weather blends perfectly with the climatic conditions, bringing a temperature condition to hike on with less precipitation, i.e. low rainfall and snowfall.

During the Spring, the whole Annapurna region is adorned with blooming rhododendron forests with many other wildflowers such as snow lotus,  primula, and oaks that bring a thriving colour of red and pink to the otherwise boring landscape. Not only that, as it is the time of the plantation season in the Himalayas, the views become even more pleasant where locals are engaging in the vegetation process of many crops, offering a unique insight into the journey.

Speaking about Autumn, the hike during these months provides a meaningful cultural insight as the main festivals of Dashain and Tihar fall in October and November, when visitors can truly learn about how such rich festivals are celebrated in the remote areas. Besides, due to the smaller amount of snow/rainfall, the skies become pretty clear with unhindered views of towering mountains and lovely green hills.

Lastly, if these 2 seasons don't fit into your holiday date, then you can surely opt for winter, as many people love to do the ABC Trek, somewhere between January and mid-December. The route becomes fascinating with snow-covered trails, perfect for someone who loves to build snowmen and also seeks a peaceful hike. Hence, the Ghorepani ABC trek can easily be done at any time of the year with proper planning and appropriate gear.

Meals and Accommodations

There's no doubt that the trail tends to serve every trekker with the best yet basic cosy lodging facilities. As the expedition is within a remote area from the beginning, the tea houses are simple but comfortable enough to accommodate.

In the lower areas, some rooms with attached washrooms and single bedrooms are quite manageable; however, moving to the upper trails crossing the Tadapan, the washrooms must be shared among all. It is impossible to manage the attached one in the upper section. Every room is hygienic and well-maintained, where comfortable mattresses, blankets, and pillows will be provided.

For the food, the meal options consist of a variety of choices from Western, Indian, and Asian to local. This region caters to all the tastes and preferences of hikers across the globe. You just have to choose it, and it'll be prepared accordingly by the locals, considering your selection.

Our Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill package covers all the meals - Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner with drinks such as tea, coffee, or anything you wish to have, and the lodges along the trekking trail, including 3-star-rated hotels in Pokhara and Kathmandu at the same time.

Travel Insurance

The travel insurance isn't mandatory, but you can include it on your must-do list for this expedition to secure your safety, and you can also hike along the trail without any problem, thinking about what would happen. What situations might occur?

We are not saying that this journey is a dangerous trip, or that there is a high risk of altitude sickness, as such critical situations are quite low, but it is suggested just for safety, as the emergency medical services might cost thousands of dollars. Having an insurance policy that covers medical bills and helicopter evacuation helps a lot for you and us as well to manage the air evacuation (rare case) as soon as possible.

What permits and fees are required for the Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill Itinerary?

To do this combined trail, there are two permits required: firstly, the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), and secondly, the TIMS Card (Trekkers Information Management System Card), as this trail navigates through the protected area from the very beginning till the end. The permits can be obtained either from Pokhara or Kathmandu at the Nepal Tourism Board office. Once your booking is confirmed with us, the required permits and paperwork will be arranged by us, soon after.

For this trek, you'll require the following permits mentioned below:

  • ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit) costs approximately NPR 3000 per person, i.e. nearly $27 for internationals, whereas for the SAARC nationals, the price is relatively low, costing around NPR 2000, i.e., USD 18.
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers Information Management System) costs around NPR 2000 for all foreign nationals - $ 18.

Travel Tips

  1. Credit Cards and ATM services aren't accessible except in Kathmandu, Pokhara, Ghorepani, and Tadapani, so make sure to do money exchange in the city area. If you have Dollars, Euros, and IC (Indian Currency) then you are good to go; otherwise, carry Nepali rupees, estimating the daily personal expenses.
  2. Carry a waist-small backpack that fits all the basic items, such as gadgets, chargers, cash, medicines, and snacks, even if you hire a porter for emergency purposes and quick access.
  3. If possible, try to bring an extra power bank to charge up the phone and camera, as some tea houses don't have electric sockets in the room. Yes! It is available in the dining area, but you have to pay $4-$5, depending on the charging hour.
  4. Before starting the hike, create a proper diet chart in one notebook, mentioning your dietary plans and also foods that you are allergic to, so the meals are prepared accordingly.
  5. For the WiFi, laundry facility, hot shower, and bottled water, the extra costs are charged by the tea house, so carry some cash if you need some extra services, like $5-$10 per day, depending on your spending.
  6. Even though there are several tea houses along the trail, the price tripled up there. Buy quick snacks to grab in between the trek, such as granola bars, protein chocolates, Snickers, and instant noodles to munch on.
  7. Do not miss out on bringing an oximeter (to check the oxygen level) and Aqua tabs to purify the water; although it is safe to drink, it is always better to do prevention rather than cure.- will be provided by us.

FAQs

Even though the route to ABC and Ghorepani Poon Hill passes through the same trailhead, they are both intriguingly distinct on their own; however, the trail along the iconic Annapurna Conservation Area, from the beginning to the end. While the Annapurna Base Camp leads you to the highest elevation at 4130 meters, it is a bit strenuous, with a wide variety of terrain, including rugged, steep sections, and demands almost 8-10 days for safe ascent. Meanwhile, the Poon Hill Trek reaches its highest at 3210 meters, at the viewpoint, passing through stone staircases and forested terrains, completed within 3 days.

The total time and duration of this combined odyssey highly depend on how your itinerary has been set, the starting point of the trip, whether it starts from Kathmandu or Pokhara, and most importantly, the route you are opting for. Meanwhile, if considered a safe ascent, with 400-500 meters of only altitude gain, and not exceeding more than that, to complete this trek, it takes, from 12 - 14 days of timeframe, starting from the capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu.

Combining both the Annapurna Base Camp with Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek, falls under a moderate adventure in Nepal, demanding a slow ascent, 5-6 hours of daily hike and 9 to 12 kilometres of distance coverage, which can be commenced by any kind of hikers, from beginners, to families with kids as well. The prior preparation is highly suggested to those who are beginners (first-time hikers), by engaging in cardiovascular exercises, such as running, cycling, or short hikes nearby, whereas one can also do workouts at the gym, to strengthen, the calves muscle, and back, to proceed th long hike, for straight 13 days, with a backpack, with several ascends and descends.

This combined trip only demands somewhere between 5-6 hours of hiking daily, which can be accomplished by any pace of hiker; however, the challenging aspect is the varied terrains that one must go through, rather than the distance. The trailhead changes frequently, from a forested woodland trailhead to rugged, steep, and rocky pathways, while navigating through Bamboo, to MBC, and the stone staircase walk, towards Uleri on the very first day. Other than that, you just have to cover 9 to 12 kilometres of distance coverage, not more than that, suiting any kind of trekkers, from novice ones to pros.

Yes, if time fits, then you can combine this trip with many other popular trailheads, such as Khopra Danda, Mardi Himal, Annapurna Circuit Trail, if you have more than 15 days in your time frame, to spend here within the Annapurna region.

The highest altitude that this trip, basically, leads you at stands out to is Annapurna Base Camp itself at 4130 meters above sea level, with a daily elevation gain of 300-400 meters each day.

The combined Poon Hill ABC Trek is considered a moderately challenging high altitude adventure, which takes you to the highest point at 4130 meters, reaching two vantage points. Even though it is regarded as a difficult odyssey, it doesn’t include any technical sections, high passes, or steep, rugged climbing pathways, which can be doable by trekkers with a good or basic fitness level who can handle a daily 4-6 hours walk, several uphill and downhill pathways, for 9-11 consecutive days. If you have no medical issues, and proceed with a gentle walk, rather than speeding up the itinerary to the combined route for 7-8 days, then anyone with basic fitness and prior preparations can commence this journey.

There are many possible challenges along the route, such as frequent weather changes, causing landslides, avalanches, and muddy and slippery terrains, which demand careful navigation; however, that won't be an issue while hiking during the peak seasonal time, when the weather and climatic conditions are stable.

Meanwhile, losing track (pathways), is surely the major problem for the independent hikers, but as you will be assisted throughout the trip, by our experienced licensed trekking guide, such issue is just a cliche', also, with our safely crafted itinerary, with pro expert teams, the acute mountain sickness, is mere, hence, this combined trek to Annapurna Base Camp and Poon Hill, is safe, to undertake, with expertly crafted itinerary, and the navigation along the experienced guides having more than 15+ years of experiences.

As it is a remote himalayan odyssey, the trail itself does not have any sort of big hospitals or health posts that handle severe emergency cases, even though the risk is minimal. That is why your safety is taken and prioritized seriously, with expert guidance, medical support, and immediate emergency evacuation options.

Throughout the excursion, you will be assisted by the experienced guide and porter, who helps in navigation, monitors your health daily, looks out for altitude sickness symptoms, and ensures that you follow the safety guidelines for AMS thoroughly.

Our guide will also carry basic first-aid kits, an oximeter, and common trekking ailments in case of an unfortunate incident, as they are medically trained and equipped. The itinerary is also built with a gradual ascent. Rest is built in days, which minimizes the possibility of acute mountain sickness. Still, in case any serious cases, like sudden illness, injuries, or severe AMS occur, then the heli evacuation is the only option, so make sure that your insurance policy covers medical expenses, and most importantly, the evacuation upto 5000 meters.

If you are a foreign trekker, the trek to ABC with Ghorepani, either solely or combined, or any Annapurna region treks, hiring a licensed, experienced trekking guide, is mandatory, as per current rules of the government, whereas the porter option remains optional.

However, many past trekkers, who have been to Nepal, or ventured on this tour, might simply state that they have done without the guide, but take note that the recent guidance has clearly stated that solo trekking is no longer permitted for foreigners, for safety navigation and immediate medical response.

Yes, every tea house includes the WIFI accessibility at the communal dining area, with extra fare, but it only works well in the dining room, and cannot be connected within the room itself, especially after you cross the elevation of 3000 meters. The electricity source is through a solar panel, so limiting the internet is understandable, and even considered a luxury in such mountain areas. Throughout the journey, wifi can be connected well enough for communication or quick social media use, but it depends on weather conditions as well, when you get near the sanctuary.

The mobile network is not so stable; it may work at the Ghorepani trail, but it fluctuates highly at the upper trailheads, or forest area, so do not rely on your network completely. Nonetheless, for communication, you have two access options, wifi and satellite phone, so there is nothing to worry about.

Yes, beginners having no prior experience can also opt for this 13-day ABC with Ghorepani Trekking, as even though it is a combined trek of both high elevation adventure above 3000 meters, this trek only navigates along the trail for 5-6 hours daily, which won't be challenging for new hikers as well. The most challenging factor marks to be the high altitude gain; however, as our itinerary is well crafted, with gradual ascent, and steep navigation, the possible risk of altitude sickness remains almost zero, meanwhile, ensure to be prepared physically, do some research regarding how himalayan trailhead supposed to be like, and create enthusiastic positive mindset and strong determination as well.

Yes, a female solo trekker for sure can undertake the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) with Poon Hill Trek smoothly, as long as she is fit, prepared, and traveling along with an experienced trekking guide, and follows the basic preventive guidelines. Being known as one of the popular destinations, the routes are well regulated, and the houses are hosted by the locals themselves, and the trail is well trodden and clear; thus, many solo female hikers have easily achieved this odyssey every year.

Meanwhile, you can do this trip independently, and trekking along with a guide remains crucial, but walking with a guide doesn’t mean you are hiking in a group; it’s just you and the experienced guide. You will follow your own pace, choose your own lodges, and customize the itinerary as you wish; however, at checkpoints and permits, it is required to have a registered guide.

The ideal peak seasons for the trek to the Annapurna region, or any other Himalayan trails, mark the Spring, starting from March to May, and Autumn (September to November), where the weather, climatic conditions remain stable, with clear views of the mountains.

Nevertheless, if you are opting for winter and monsoon season, then make sure to be physically prepared and do the comprehensive planning regarding the itinerary, setting contingency days, as due to the high precipitation, the pathway might get blocked for 1-2 days, near the base camp, and carry all the gears and essentials.

Meanwhile, if you are a first-time hiker, or trailing along with families and kids, then consider only the Poon Hill route, as the terrain is quite easier to navigate and can be completed just within a 3-4 day timeframe, despite the snow or rainfall, from June to August and December, January and February.
