Make your way to the Short Annapurna Circuit Trek in Nepal with our shortest itinerary of 10 days, perfect for those who want to feel the thrill of crossing over the highest pass of Thorung La that visits ancient monasteries and temples with a rich tapestry of Manange communities amid the iconic Annapurna Conservation Area. It is genuinely crafted for those who have a limited time bound but want to feel the crisp of the Himalayan lifestyle walking through the off-beaten trail every single day, where the varied landscapes and climatic zones amuse you more than anything.

Annapurna Circuit Short Trek Overview:

The Short Annapurna Circuit Trek ascends to the world's highest Thorong La Pass (5416 meters) and descends to the holy Muktinath Temple in 10 days. Ascending with the Marshayngdi valley and the world's deepest gorge of the "Kali Gandaki Valley," alongside this trek touches both the iconic districts of Manang and Mustang within the Annapurna region. Even though this trek to the Annapurna Circuit, which is a long classical trekking route in Nepal, is shortened to 10 days, safety won't be compromised as we've set this itinerary with a slow ascent and an acclimatization day.

Throughout this 10-day Annapurna Circuit Trekking, it meanders through the Annapurna Conservation Area right from the start, with insights into the diverse landscapes with the verdant forest of pine and rhododendrons. The gradual transition of varied topography can be seen as it begins with lovely green valleys along the Marshyangdi River and slowly turns into a rugged and more remote section with a highly towering landscape. Then, it gradually transforms to the tip-touching view of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges from Manang village.

In between, you'll get to explore the diverse ethnic groups while settling at remote tea houses that are highly influenced by ancient Tibetan Buddhism. Make sure to wave hello back to the children, and if you want, you can even bring some chocolates to them, as nothing beats the happiness of Tibetans residing in remote areas of the Himalayas.

During the Annapurna Circuit Short Trek, several mountains befriend you at every stride, such as Dhaulagiri (8167 m), Mt. Manaslu (8163 m), Hiunchuli, and Tilicho Peak, also known as Tent Peak (7134 m), and not to forget! Gangapurna Himal (7457 m), Annapurna (8091 m) en route. After an ascent to the highest pass of Thorong La, the spectacular panoramic views with the Tibetan flags fluttering at the summit point after a long hours of hike, gives you a sense of accomplishment. Looking back, you can see the whole dry landscape of Upper Mustang, and in front, the snowy, frosty 360-degree views will surely captivate you.

Likewise, this trek bypasses the apple orchards of Marpha with an exploration of the Jomsom valley along the thundering high mountains later on. To sum up, this short trek to the Annapurna circuit is a roller coaster ride that lets you immerse in the diverse landscapes showcasing the six distinct zones of the Annapurna region within a short period of only 10 days, but it remains within your heart forever.

Note: If you want to visit the another famous corner of this region such as Poon Hill, Hot Spring then you can check our standard Annapurna Circuit Trek package that gets completed in 12 days with an additional days to these enchanting corners.

What to expect in this Short Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary?

Simply, there are several ways and routes to reach the Annapurna Circuit, and the same goes for the short one. Destination Himalaya Treks offers this Short Annapurna Circuit Trek of 10 days, which you can say is a mid-range version of the standard Annapurna Circuit Trek that visits the Ghorepani Poon Hill and Hot Spring.

However, as this is the shortest one that we could alter, ensuring safety with a gradual ascent of 500-600 meters maximum with an acclimatization day in Manang, it can still be minimized to 8 days, but you must ensure that you can undertake 9-10 hours of hiking per day and have prior experience. If you want to visit one of the world's highest lakes, Tilicho Lake (4919 m), then you can even opt for the Annapurna Circuit with Tilicho Lake Trek of 15 days.

To summarize this itinerary, this 10-day Annapurna Circuit Trek starts from Kathmandu, with a drive to Besisahar as the local bus only goes to this point. So, we will again take a jeep drive to Chame (2670 m), and afterwards, the walking trail begins from Chame the next day. Then, the journey continues to Upper Pisang (3300 m), but firstly, we'll encounter the Pangdi Danda Rock Face, which towers high at 4775 meters, and Swargadwari Danda, bypassing villages such as Brathang and Telekhu that lead us to the upper part of Pisang.

Continuing the trekking route, it takes us to Manang village (3540 m) via Gheru and Ngawal with an ancient visit to the Braga Monastery, which is also popularized as the oldest gompa of the Manang district. As soon as we reach the Manang valley, the spectacular views of the Annapurna Range get more prominent as it is located at the northern side of this Himalayan range.

The acclimatization day is set here in Manang, so the best exploration can be done here at the least populated area of Nepal, which is also known as the valley of Manang communities. Here, the culture is unique compared to all, as being regarded as the ancient trade route of salt and yaks between Nepal and Tibet, the culture here is highly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism. During acclimatization here, we can side hike to Gangapurna Lake (3440 m) and Ice Lake (4600 m); either one, the choice is yours!

On the 6th day, the trek meanders through Yak Kharka (4050 m) via Tengi, and then it leads us to Ledar along the confluence of Jharang Khola, and then to Thorong High Camp (4850 m), leaving Marshyangdi Valley behind, with a gradual rise of elevation of 700 meters before ascending the highest point. This section of the two-day trek is more challenging than the others as it passes through the steep and rugged section, which benefits the uphill walk that is on the way. The High Camp is the last stopping point before we cross over the pass of Thorung La.

On the 8th day, we will take an ascent to Thorong La Pass- the world's highest pass and the ultimate goal of our trip. Then, the route descends to Muktinath Temple, touching the Mustang region, along the deepest gorge of Kali Gandaki Valley with a dramatic change of landscape. Paying a visit to the pilgrimage site of Muktinath of Hindu and Buddhist spirituality, we will take a jeep drive to Jomsom on this very day.

This Short Annapurna Circuit Trekking concludes with a flight to Pokhara from Jomsom of 25 minutes, where one more exploration day is set here in Pokhara, the vibrant city by the lake. Here, you can either extend the trip for more days by visiting Mahendra Cave, Boating and kayaking in Phewa Lake, Begnas Tal, or even taking a ride to Pundikot, just completed in 2025, and Shanti Stupa. On top of that, you can take a morning ride to Sarangkot for the best sunrise view. As these excursion facilities aren't included in our cost, there is an additional cost for such an extension of the trip.

Hence, the trip finally gets over after reaching back to Kathmandu via a luxury tourist bus ride, where the Nepalese cultural program and fine dining restaurant is set to end your journey in Nepal with a final insight into Nepalese culture and tradition until next time.

Note: If our itinerary doesn't match your preference or holiday duration, then you can customize it anytime with us by including or excluding some that fit your budget and timeframe. Even though this Short Annapurna Circuit Trek 10 days is crafted for a shorter timeframe, it does include 1 acclimatization day at Manang, with a side trip to Gangapurna Lake and Ice Lake, ascending higher, it let your body adopt the rising high altitude, and minimizes the possible risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), hence, this trip is surely safe to commence, if you are considering such factor, at the very first hand.

It is not an easy hike, like a stroll around the park, or Wembley land, which does include long-distance trekking coverage, varied changes in terrains, from forested trail to rugged, steep sections, to an alpine valley at high altitude where the air is possibly thinner than the city area; however, it is not the most challenging trek as well. Anyone having a basic level of fitness and proper preparedness can commence on this adventure; however, they still have to expect unexpected situations, so ensure to be ready accordingly. Possible challenges like weather conditions, frequent changes, natural hazard situations, etc., are always there, so just follow the navigation of the experienced trekking guide, who knows, every call of the mountains well and is medically trained and equipped as well.

If you can proceed 5-6 hours walking pace, and have a patience level, with a strong mindset determinant, and comprehensively pack the gears and essentials, as per the seasonal time, and love to wander around the mountains, and seek, something unique and completely out of the city lifestyle and busy trailhead, then, this Annapurna Circuit 10 days Trek suits impeccably for you.

If you want to extend this Short trek to the Annapurna Circuit with other trails

This Short Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary is crafted in such a way to finish this trip as soon as possible, but with proper acclimatization days in between, you may want to slightly extend this trek and want to include the Poon Hill and more exploration days in Pokhara. If that happens, then you can add 4-5 more days to this 10-day Annapurna Circuit Trekking and have more days either in Pokhara or Chitwan.

If you have even more days, around 13 days, with an extension of only 3 days to this trip, then you can even look forward to combining this trek with Nar Phu Valley, which explores the twin valley of Nar and Phu first and ascends to the high pass on the second round.

Similarly, you can even visit another isolated area of the Manaslu region by combining the Manaslu and Annapurna Trek in one that takes around 23 days. But you must have prior experience to extend this trip, as it requires 6-7 hours and crosses another high pass of Larkya La Pass as well.

Essential Information

Best time for Short Annapurna Circuit Trekking

The ideal seasons for the trek to Annapurna Circuit are spring and autumn, offering perfect climatic conditions and surroundings filled with vibrant flowers and lovely green hills, ensuring safety as well as clear views of landscapes and mountains. Besides, the temperature doesn't fall below -5 at nighttime and rises beyond 22 degrees during the day, offering perfect humidity to hike on and cosy nights to settle in.

Meanwhile, one can undertake the Annapurna Circuit Short Trek in winter and monsoon, but one must be highly prepared and carry proper gear, essential items, and set 1-2 contingency days, as if there is a heavy snowfall, then the way to the pass remains closed for 1-2 days. In winter, the trails are filled with frosty snow and fall below -5 degrees, and it is a huge challenge to cross the high pass of Thorong La, but pro hikers who want to push their limits would love it.

The least visited span of the year is during the monsoon season. At this time, the trails become completely slippery at lower altitudes, but won't cause much hassle at higher terrains, as it falls under the rain shadow area. However, the pathway to the high pass becomes a hassle due to a heavily covered snow pathway.

Nonetheless, Destination Himalaya Treks and Expedition crafts packages throughout the year with customised itineraries according to the weather conditions, ensuring everyone can undertake this trip despite holiday time constraints. Here is a detailed overview of what each season has to offer:

Spring (March to May)

Spring tends to be the best time for the 10-day Annapurna Circuit Trek as the temperature is mild, ranging from 12 to 22 degrees Celsius, which is the finest condition to start the hike without feeling drained out and sweaty. The best part is! The forested area is thrived with the red rhododendrons of more than 1000 blooming in mid-March, which is why many enthusiastic hikers admire this trek after March or mid time in, between March and May. Besides, there is a lower chance of rainfall and snowfall, making the route easy and offering clear views of the Himalayan range at the same time.

Autumn (September to November)

Another ideal time to do this adventure is in Autumn, as it falls after the end of the monsoon, which means heavy rainfall in Nepal. So, the weather gets clear, providing the undisturbed views of the mountains due to less precipitation. The temperature is mild and moderate, ranging from 5 to 15 degrees Celsius, which is the finest season to hike at the upper trails. Besides, the main festival of the Himalayas, Dashain, and Tihar fall under this timeframe in between October, which simply means you'll get to know how such festivals are commemorated by the Manage (Tibetans) in such a highland.

On top of that, the flowers that thrived in red in spring turned into a golden, crusty colour in autumn, and the green hills turned into dry brown leaves, adding to the cocoa surroundings en route. Thus, if you are someone who craves to make the best out of the Himalayas, then autumn is perfect for you.

While the standard trailhead difficulty level falls under a relatively moderate trek, this 10-day short trek to the Annapurna Circuit tends to be a challenging expedition as it is a rapid version of the regular classic one. However, it doesn't include any technical route that requires some expertise in rock scrambling or specialised gear; anyone with basic physical fitness can attain it.

The walking trail soon begins from Chame (2670 m), where the terrain is relatively easy but demands at least 5 hours of hiking, till you reach Manang via Upper Pisang. The strenuous section comes from Yak Kharka (4050 m) with a rugged and steep pathway until crossing Thorong La Pass at 5416 meters, with a challenging uphill walk of 3 to 4 hours, which becomes challenging for beginners. So, make sure to engage in some sort of physical strengthening activities to build up your stamina level.

Besides, this Short Annapurna Circuit Trekking ascends 3000 meters daily, which isn't an easy task with the thin air to navigate, especially when planning to cross the world's highest pass of Throng La, which also has a snowy pathway and slippery sections. Just make sure that you carry a good pair of crampons and follow some preventive guidelines to avoid the risk of altitude sickness. Other than that, anyone who can do 6-7 hours of walking can easily undertake this Annapurna Circuit Short Trek with no hassle.

Risk of Altitude Sickness and Safety Guidelines

Even though this trek ascends to a height of 2500 and reaches above 5000 meters, the risk of altitude sickness during this Annapurna Circuit Short Trek is low.

Wondering how? Well! Our 10-day Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary doesn't exceed the ascent of 500 to 600 meters each day, even though it is a short version, which means that you will have a gradual ascent with no hurry, preventing the risk of high-altitude sickness. On top of that, you will be guided by the best trekking guides who are medically equipped, ensuring that you are safe 24 hours a day, even if you are in a critical condition. If such an unfortunate situation arises, then they will help and assist you directly, making sure that your safety comes first.

Even though this, short trek to Annapurna circuit doesn't invades any high risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), there is a famous line that goes by, "It is always the best thing to implement the preventive guidelines and be fully prep rather than a cure and regret, just like that, here are some of the tips to avoid the risk of AMS that becomes one hundred percent effective throughout the journey:

  • Make sure to carry an oximeter to ensure that your pulse rate doesn't fall below the normal one; just check the oxygen level at every stopping point and be alert.
  • Try to hydrate yourself with 3-4 litres of water each day; however, if that sounds too much, then try to moisten the body with soupy noodles, juice, and seasonal fruits to stay hydrated.
  • Do not overspeed your hike, thinking of matching the pace of fellow hikers. Please take note that every individual carries their own level of endurance and stamina, so just follow the guide. Overspeeding means increasing the heart pulse rate, which can immediately cause a sort of breathlessness.
  • Carry a "Diamox" if you are a beginner and have it with medical precaution if you are a beginner and have ever been to an expedition at such a high altitude. What it does is it acts as a preventive medicine to avoid the possibility of AMS.
  • If you feel any sort of discomfort, such as out of breath, lack of control, loss of sleep and appetite (insomnia), skin turning pale, nausea, feel like vomiting and severe headache, then inform the guide immediately. They will look out for what can be best done and ensure that you are safely handled.

How high does the Annapurna Circuit Short Trek reach?

In total, this trek covers approximately 188 kilometres, with an elevation gain to 5416 meters, taking a proper acclimatisation day in between. Starting from Chame (2670 meters), the minimum altitude is 870 meters at Pokhara, the ending point of the 10-day short journey.

This 10-day Annapurna Circuit Trek ascends to the maximum height at Thorung La Pass, covering almost 4500 meters in between, bypassing Upper Pisang, Manang, Yak Kharka, Thorong High Camp, where you will experience the rising elevation, so it won't cause any hassle even if it reaches such a high altitude.

In between, acclimatisation day is usually set in Manang, so one can explore the upper valley more in depth and visit the fascinating Gangapurna Lake (3480 meters) or Ice Lake. Afterwards, the trek then rises to Yak Kharka and Thorung High Camp to simply get used to the altitude of over 4000 meters before crossing the highest pass of Thorung La, before descending to Muktinath located in the Mustang district via the deepest gorge of Kali Gandaki Valley. The standard itinerary does cover Poon Hill and Tatopani; thus, as it is a shorter version, it simply skips this part of the Annapurna region to shorten up the trip for those having limited time and only reaches Jomsom and Pokhara.

In total, this trek covers around 188 km and is usually completed in 10-12 days; hence, the regular route does require 15-16 days. Thus, you can even extend this trip by opting for 12 days standard trekking route that covers Poon Hill, Tatopani, and Ghorepani within this timeframe, that conceals more than 200 km.

Is Travel Insurance mandatory for this trip?

Travel insurance is mandatory for this Short Annapurna Circuit Trek, as hiking uphill with a daily ascent of more than 2000 meters means the risk of unfortunate conditions such as weather, climate, landslides, trip delays, and AMS is always there. So, make sure to attain a good travel insurance policy that covers theft, lost baggage, trip cancellation and delays, and most importantly, the helicopter evacuation over 3000 meters. If possible, try to get travel insurance from the company of your own homebound so that it can be managed effectively. Having such assurance ensures the trip becomes a completely safe expedition and lets you walk along the trail with a free mind.

This package includes all your standard meals- Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner during the trip, which are prepared and served accordingly by the locals themselves after the order is given.

Meanwhile, we suggest not consuming the milk after crossing the height of 3500 meters, as it would be totally hard to digest.

Besides the vegetable option, there are many non-veg optional menus as well, which are dried in the sun, also called sukuti. But, try to avoid it as they are stored for many days, which isn't hygienic and fresh. Try to consume non-veg soups as a substitute instead. We also genuinely suggest you try Nepali Dal Bhat, which is said to be "Dal Bhat Power 24 hours", where the rice is served with veg times, non-veg (chicken), which can be excluded if you prefer, lentil soup, and some kind of pickle, which can be refilled.
