Essential Information

Best Time for the Everest Base Camp Trek in Comfort

The EBC Trek in Comfort stands out as an all-year-round adventure, which can be undertaken anytime of the year, as the trail is smooth going, well-maintained, and straightforward. However, this trip to the Everest region can be best experienced during Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November), where the weather is clear, with no heavy precipitation, unveiling the unobstructed mountain views and unique landscape insights. The temperature usually remains mild and moderate, letting you proceed on an easy walk without draining yourself physically.

On the other hand, this trip is doable during winter and monsoon time as well, but the muddy, slippery terrains can be tough to navigate for beginners, so we do not highly recommend these particular times. Meanwhile, if you have prior experience and engage in preparations beforehand, then the trek to Everest Base Camp is doable throughout the year.

Spring (March-May): Vibrant Floras and Long Daylight Hours

  • The whole green, lush valley thrives in the blooming red shades of rhododendrons, pines, and oaks, with an opportunity to encounter migrating Himalayan bird species, making the adventure intriguing from the beginning.
  • The minimum possibility of rainfall, dry terrains, and smooth going, easy to proceed even for a newbie, without having to face muddy and slippery pathways.
  • The sunny day hours last longer, allowing trekkers to hike in a relaxed way, without speeding/rapiding the itinerary, covering every highlighted corner.
  • The temperature ranges between 12°C and 20°C during the day, and falls to only -5 °C at night, perfect for a day hike, and cosy nights to settle in at high altitude.

Autumn (September-November): The Golden Time of the Year

  • Autumn marks one of the clearest times to wander around, as the season follows the end of the monsoon, washing away the dusty air and clearing the view of the peaks, including Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Ama Dablam.
  • The whole Khumbu valley thrives in Nepal's major festivals, Dashain and Tihar, and the vibrant local festival of Mani Rimdu, celebrated at Tengboche Monastery.
  • The days are pleasant and cool, and nights are warm, with humidity ranging between 15°C and 22°C. Nights are humid and do not go below -10°C, which is manageable.

Winter (December to February): Quietest, Coldest and Snowiest

  • For those hikers who love less crowded pristine trailheads and only love to bond with nature, rather than people, winter must be your choice, which gives a peaceful version of the Everest region.
  • Coldest time of the year, so you must bring proper gear, crampons for icy navigation and a sleeping bag, to tackle low humidity.
  • The himalayan peaks and landscapes get covered with white snow, making the view scenically intriguing.
  • The temperature takes a massive drop below -12 °C at the base camp, and the skies become remarkably clear, with the accompaniment of the mountains throughout.

Monsoon (June to August): Lush Greenery and Hidden Vista

  • The monsoon experiences a heavy level of cloudburst (rain and snowfall), which makes the terrains completely wet, slippery and icy, making the route strenuously challenging.
  • The surrounding landscape, hillside, and the whole forested, lush valley are beautifully covered in greenery.
  • Only recommended for experienced hikers who can navigate harsh terrain and snowy paths.

16 Days Everest Base Camp Trek Challenges and Tips: How Difficult is it?

When compared to the regular standard 14-day EBC trail, the 16-day Everest Trek in comfort is considered an easy-going and smooth adventure that suits every age group, and any kind of hikers, from beginners to experienced ones. The trailhead does not include any technical climbing sections or hard patterned isolated navigation, and stands out as a straightforward route, making it accessible for everyone. Daily, this adventure proceeds 4-5 hrs of hiking, with an altitude gain of 300-500 meters max. However, as the terrain changes rapidly, for instance, from a forest area to rugged, steep sections and icy pathways near the base camp, one must have a basic level of fitness to complete this trip smoothly.

While the rapid, quick ascent, or the basic itinerary might be physically demanding for some, the Everest Base Camp in Comfort Trek includes two acclimatisation days, one at Namche Bazaar and another at Dingboche, with side trips. Also, at the same time, you'll have two days to rest, get prepared, and plan comprehensively before starting the trek in Kathmandu, the capital city, entailing a hassle-free Himalayan odyssey, without speeding up the itinerary, and commence the journey with ease. Whereas, the gradual slow ascent, and rest days, en route, ensure your body adapts to the rising high altitude, and avoids the possible risk of altitude sickness, making the excursion 10 times safer than the regular itineraries.

Meanwhile, here are some of the challenges that you might come across along the trailhead:

  • Daily Walking Hours: Daily, you have to cover 4-5 hours of navigation, with a distance of 8- 12 kilometres. Are you ready to proceed on such a long hike? If not, then start to invest in training and preparation to strengthen your stamina level.
  • Varied Terrains: The terrains change frequently. As you go higher, the trailhead transforms from a straightforward hike to continuous ascent and descent, to a rugged, remote, steep and sheer route; however, the good news is that it doesn't include any technical sections, and can be commenced by hikers having a basic fitness level.
  • Unexpected Weather Changes: The climatic and temperature conditions undergo a rapid transformation at the higher altitudes, which is uncertain, for instance, even at the peak seasonal time (Spring and Autumn), sometimes, the humidity falls to a massive drop at night, upto even -12°C, near base camp. At the same time, the precipitation might occur unexpectedly, so consider packing the gear, matching all seasonal variations.
  • Mentally Challenging: Let’s be real, 16 days in the remote Himalayas is a big commitment. Between the rugged trails, the rustic tea‑house charm, and the sheer novelty of mountain life, it’s completely normal to hit a homesickness, which is not a bad thing, but still it might affect the trip a bit. So, for that, be mentally prepared by doing some research, carrying your loved one's photos, memories, such as their gifts, that motivate you and keep you focused.
  • Altitude Sickness: A major gap in the altitude from Kathmandu (1360 m) to the highest altitude at 5545 meters, Kalapatthar. This huge difference might cause the possibility of AMS, demanding prior preventive guidelines and safety measures. Beginners might experience mere symptoms when they have never experienced high altitude, but the good thing is that it can be minimised by following the AMS safety guide from the very beginning. Apart from that, this 16-day Everest Base Camp Trek itinerary includes two acclimatisation days in Namche and Dingboche, allowing the body to adjust to the rising altitude.

Permits Required

To travel in the Everest region, two permits are required for this adventure; both are mandatory and checked along the route, so make sure to carry them throughout. The permits are included in our package, so when you book with Destination Himalaya Treks, the permit arrangements will be handled on your behalf.

Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit

Firstly, one must attain the Sagarmatha National Park Permit to enter the protected area of the Khumbu region, which you can either obtain at the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) or at the Monjo Entry gate. The permit fees directly go to the preservation of the ecosystem, sustainability, and boost the local economy of the Sherpa communities that reside within. It also keeps track of your navigation, in and out, for an easy track when needed in emergency cases. The cost is approximately NPR 3000 (USD 25) per head, and is registered at Monjo checkpoint, at the very beginning, giving you access to enter the Sagarmatha National Park.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Entry Permit

Back in the days, one had to grab the TIMS Card; however, it is now replaced by the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit, which is obtained at Lukla or Monjo, as it is a local permit. The cost is similar to the park permit, costing approx. NPR 3000 (USD 25) only per head, and checked at Lukla or Monjo.

Everest Deluxe Trek 16 Days Vs Standard Regular EBC Package: Accommodation Difference

The Deluxe Comfort EBC package transforms your regular Everest Base Camp Trek by prioritising your comfort through upgrading tea houses, private rooms and premium amenities that are available at the mountain lodges, while the Standard package sticks to basic, communal lodging. The major problem/issue, in the himalayas, that every hiker has to face is that the accommodations are not so well-equipped rooms and seating, especially when it comes to such a crowded navigation, the Everest Trail. That is why we offer this 16-day Everest Base Camp Deluxe Trek, prioritising a premium basis accommodation. Both use family-run tea houses and mountain lodges run by locals; the difference is night and day, comfort, privacy and comfortable sittings.

Here is the comparison of the standard package and deluxe package, so you get a detailed insight into what to expect:

Feature Standard Package  Deluxe Package (What we offer)?
Room Type Twin / Triple or group basis, with basic beds (usually shared rooms) Private double / twin rooms with better and thicker mattresses

Travel Tips

  • Before coming to Nepal, after the trip is booked, opt for a good travel insurance policy that covers every essential, mainly, medical expenses, trip delays, cancellation, and most importantly, helicopter evacuation up upto 6000 meters.
  • Engage in prior physical preparedness, such as cardiovascular exercises, like running, swimming, cycling and do some research regarding the trailhead, trekking route, difficulties, and keep only realistic expectations, setting a strong mindset.
  • While being in Kathmandu, make sure to tick off all the packing essentials, supplements, and, if possible, do a complete health checkup, ensuring everything is okay, and you are all set to take off this trip.
  • Buy a Nepali SIM card, NTC or Ncell, for communication, where the network works smoothly upto Tengboche or Namche, even for data (internet use), and if the weather is fine, it can be used for calls, as well, upto Dingboche or Lobuche.
  • The luggage limit for the Lukla Flight shouldn't exceed 15 kgs per head, so make sure to fit in the gears and essentials, which are only required, by not going beyond the weight limit, which costs you extra.
  • Set a budget for the personal expenses, and carry Nepali currency (cash), as ATM are not available, from Namche, nor do debit or Credit card facilities work up there. Extra money is required for beverages, bottled water, chargers, wifi, tipping guides, porters, buying souvenirs, and many more.
  • For the backup, do not miss out bringing a powerbank (20,000 mAh), along with you, even though charging stations are easily accessible, still, at peak seasons, there might be huge queues, making you wait to recharge gadgets and phones.
FAQs

A comfortable trek to Everest Base Camp (EBC) takes approximately 14-16 days in total, including Kathmandu buffer day, arrival, departure dates, and Lukla flights, 2 proper standard acclimatisation days at Namche Bazaar, and Dingboche before going beyond 5000 meters, proceeding a gentle and slow ascent, without speeding up the itinerary. This relaxed-paced itinerary takes 4-5 hours of walking daily, instead of more than 6 hours, to minimize the risk of altitude sickness and covers every highlighted spot, with the best side trips to the iconic spots.

Yes, this 16-day Everest Trek can be seamlessly customized to suit your pace, comfort, and experience. If you are short on time, then consider the 14-day itinerary, which also entails 2 rest days, but no buffer day, so ensure to set the flight tickets back to home (your country accordingly. Whereas, for a 12-day hike, you must be well prepared and have some prior high altitude trekking experience, so that the hike does not physically drain you, or the rapid altitude gain, won't lead you to the risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).

Daily, walking distance of this trip is approximately 10-12 km, demanding a 5-6 daily hike. whereas, in total, the trekking distance covers approx. 120-132 kilometers round trip, along the trekking route.

The classic 16-day Everest Base Camp route starts with a Lukla flight from Kathmandu, and proceeds on the walking trail via Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorakshep, then takes a hike to EBC, and then, Kala Patthar, the highest altitude, and concludes in Kathmandu via Lukla airport.

The highest elevation stands out as Kala Patthar, 5545 meters, with an impeccable sunrise panorama view of the legendary mountains, including Lotshe, Nuptshe, Ama Dablam, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and Mount Everest itself. You will also pass via EBC at 5364 m, before reaching the highest point.

No matter which expedition you proceed to, there is always some kind of risk of AMS (altitude sickness) during the 16-day trek to EBC, since you reach the highest point at Kala Patthar (5545 m), with thinning air, every day. However, as this itinerary entails a slow ascent and includes great intelligent acclimatisation rest days, it lets your body adapt to the rising high altitude, and minimizes the AMS risk. Throughout the journey, follow the preventive guidelines, such as hydrating the body with 3-4 L every day, fuel your body with nutritious meals, filled with carbs, fibers, and proteins, that keep you energized throughout, and avoid drinking alcohol, smoking, or having high caffeine after going up, beyond Namche Bazaar or Dingboche, at least.

No, you do not need any technical climbing skills, as there are no technical sections, routes, or thoroughly steep, strenuous climbs. The hike is simple, if you have a good fitness level and some prior hiking experience, even short ones, upto 3000 meters. If you have no trekking experience before, then do not worry, just engage in basic training, cardiovascular exercises, like walking (hitting 10K daily steps), cycling, running, stair master uphill walk, staircase walk, and slowly, do some weight workouts, focusing on legs, back, shoulder and builid your endurance capacity.

Yes, you will find a good WIFI connectivity in every tea house, at the dining area, whereas the mobile signal (NTC / Ncell) works upto Tengboche quite well, but as you ascend higher, the access to the network is not so stable. The charging accessibility is also only available at the dining area, due to limited electricity, with an extra fare, so ensure to carry a powerbank (20,000 mAh), so that you get to charge in an emergency, for batteries, gadgets, and phones, rather than waiting in a queue for longer hours, at peak seasons.
