Phoksundo Lake Trek is one of the best off-the-beaten-path, wild, and completely remote journeys that take place within an isolated Dolpo region. The journey leads you to the deepest alpine lake, famous for its turquoise shade and great trans-Himalayan backdrop, and intensely changing landscapes.

Along the route, you get to admire the stunning Phoksundo waterfall and explore Ringmo village, where local traditions, culture, lifestyle, and the Bon heritage reflect the pristine, unique customs that still remain unchanged.

Beyond just reaching a destination, every step offers a distinct view of Himalayan beauty, with striking mountain views set against the Tibetan Plateau backdrop. Throughout the Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek, you are rewarded with the snow-capped Kanjiroba Himal massif, Kangmara, and the Dhaulagiri range.

For travelers seeking a sense of adventure, quiet trails, and fewer crowds without taking on a highly strenuous trek, the Phoksundo Lake Hike is an appealing option. It leads into remote Dolpo, one of Nepal’s most isolated regions, and offers a moderate, non-technical route suitable for beginners with good fitness and adequate preparation.

The Phoksundo Lake Trekking begins with a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and then Jupal, which marks the starting point of the trip, entering Nepal's largest park, Shey Phoksundo National Park. Initiated in 1984 AD, the trek requires a restricted-area permit arranged through a registered local agency and an experienced guide; the route remains secluded and less crowded—an appealing choice for adventure seekers drawn to remote trails.

At Destination Himalaya Treks, we offer the cost-effective Phoksundo Lake Trek package for 2026 and 2027, with the appropriate discounted offer for group trekkers, and special early bird offers for Spring and Autumn joiners. The trek is full on a tea house basis, run by the local mountain people, so expect decent amenities and all the essentials: permits, transportation (flights), trekking guide, food, and accommodations are arranged by us and included in our package itself.

Why do Phoksundo Lake Trek in 2026 and 2027 stand out?

Trekking to Phoksundo Lake stands out as a one-of-a-kind adventure that unravels the hidden beauty of the Trans-Himalayan region, covering almost 50% to 60% of the physical distance of a standard, full Lower Dolpo Circuit Trek. The distinct forests of pine, oaks, and birch, deep gorges, cascading waterfalls, and the sacred villages make the trek even more intriguing rather than tiring, where every stride surprises you.

Reach Nepal's Deepest Lake

The main highlight of the trip is the Phoksundo Lake itself, where the wetland stands out stunningly in turquoise shades, with steep, barren cliffs, the rugged terrain of the Trans-Himalayan landscape, and snow-capped peaks. From the lakeshore, the mountains reflect in the clear water, which can only be expressed through eyes, rather than an explanation, that remains within you forever.

Explore Remote Dolpo's Landscapes

The journey takes place within the highly protected Shey Phoksundo National Park, from forested woodlands to river valleys, narrow gorges, rocky hillsides, and high dry Tibetan plateau all the way along. As the days pass by and you reach higher, the scenery takes a marvellous transition to the open terrain of the Dolpo. The changing landscape, combined with serene trails and a sense of isolation, makes the trip rewarding and immersive, completely different from crowded trails like Annapurna and Everest.

Visit Ringmo Village and Tshowa Gompa

Located near the southern part of Phoksundo Lake, Ringmo is a culturally rich historical village, where the Bon religion and traditions are still practiced. The Buddhist-influenced trails as you explore the village, with stone houses, prayer flags, red shrines, and chortens, provide a glimpse of the close roots with the Tibetan-influenced heritage. You also get an opportunity to visit the Tshowa Gompa and Shey Gompa, getting a closer look at the historical traditions, cultures, and lifestyles.

Phoksundo Waterfall and Mountain Views

Phoksundo Waterfall is a dramatic landmark along the trail, alongside the steep, rugged, and intense cliffs, with an 360 degree angle view of the Kanjiroba Himal range and the Dolpo landscape. From the high-altitude village of Ringmo (3360 m) and Phoksundo Lake at 3610 m, the mountain views get closer and expand. Look for the snow-capped peaks of the Kanjiroba massifs, including Kanjiroba North and South, rising above the deep-blue lake and surrounding alpine slopes. On clear days, the contrast of rocky ridgelines, glacial peaks, forested hillsides, and the turquoise waters creates a striking panorama.

Phoksundo Lake Trek Cost for 2026 and 2027

The Phoksundo Lake Trek typically costs ranging from USD 1299 to USD 1699 per person; however, it varies widely depending on group size, trip duration, flights, and most importantly, group size. One of the major factors that influence the costing is transportation access, as it requires 4 flights: Kathmandu- Nepalgunj- Juphal and vice versa, which ultimately makes the trip pricing more on the higher side. To make the trip budget-friendly, you can also choose ground transportation access, but the itinerary gets longer by 3-4 days, so if you have limited time, you don't have any other option apart from taking a flight. Our standard private trip cost tends to be USD 1699, which is the best price we can possibly offer; the pricing gets lower and lower, depending on the number of hikers in your group.

Essential Information

When is the best time to trek Phoksundo Lake?

The best seasons to explore Phoksundo Lake in Nepal stand out to be spring, from March to May, and autumn, starting from September to November. During these typical timeframes, the weather remains clear, with a very low chance of rain and snowfall, making the trail easy to proceed. Due to no precipitation, the trails tend to stay dry and smoothly undertaken, with no risk of slippery, muddy, or snowy pathways, perfect for beginners too. Apart from that, as the journey starts with a flight, it is very important that the climate remains predictable to avoid flight delays and cancellations, and these particular seasons mark a perfect time for those with limited time, as the chances of flight disruptions are low as well.

While mentioning all this, not to forget, the temperature is chilly and mild, and the clear views of the mountains and landscapes make the trip even more engaging. You do not have to worry about getting accommodations, as during the peak season, the tea houses operate fully, and the possibility of route blockage is nearly zero. Hence, the ideal time to go trekking to Phoksundo Lake is spring and Autumn, just like any other Himalayan treks.

How difficult is the Phoksundo Lake Trek?

The Phoksundo Lake Trekking is considered a moderate adventure that does not demand any technical skills or prior trekking experience. The trails neither include any high mountain passes nor base camps above 4000 meters, which makes it altitude-friendly and can be approached by first-timers as well. However, trekkers must be ready for walking varied terrain and long daily hikes of 5-6 hours, through rocky, steep, rugged, and narrow sections with several ups and downs. Rather than the distance covered, what makes the trek hard is the trail isolation and distant lodges, which may be frustrating for beginners, but as long as you are hiking in the company of the trekking guide, such problems won't bother you at all.

You don't need any previous Himalayan experience, but it is highly suggested that you engage in physical activity (strengthening), like cardio, short hikes, or workouts, so that your legs and muscles become ready for long walks. While altitude sickness is not much of a concern, as it reaches its highest point just at 3610 meters, it is essential that you watch out for symptoms, such as headache, nausea, dizziness, and reach out to your guide if such happens or if any discomfort occurs. The trip can be best described as moderate or a bit more challenging than easy, due to remoteness, weather uncertainty, and high altitude.

Foods and Accommodations

The meals and lodges along the way are on a simple basis, hosted by the local people themselves. The tea houses have a limited food menu, yet are specialized to cater to the tastes of hikers all across the globe, and offer vegan, veg, and non-veg options as well. They are filling, locally cooked; some of the popular dishes include dal bhat, soup, noodles, potatoes, bread items, and local meals, like butter tea, spinach Tibetan momo, and tsampa. Menu choices may be limited, and supplies can be more difficult to find farther along the trail, so bring any favorite snacks or special dietary items.

Accommodation is usually in basic teahouses or local homestays, with simple rooms and shared facilities rather than hotel-style comforts. Hot showers, charging points, and other amenities may be limited or unavailable in some villages; the available services are charged depending on usage hours. For communication, you will find, wi-fi, at every tea house, which can be connected in the communal dining hall; sometimes it may not work perfectly, but overall, it can be accessible for quick calls or texts. The rooms provided to you depend on your group size; for instance, if you are travelling solo, then a single room will be provided, whereas travelling with a partner means a twin room will be given; hence, your comfort and safety are highly prioritized.

Permits for the Phoksundo Lake Trekking

For the standard regular Phoksundo Lake route, there are two permits required: firstly, the Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Permit, and the Lower Dolpo Restricted Area Permit. These permits can only be obtained through local registered trekking operators, where one must hire a local guide through the agency itself, as independent hiking is not permitted to date. With the new regulation, one can hike privately, without having to join a group or a partner; hence, even if you are travelling solo, you can get the permits, fulfilling legal obligations.

  • Shey Phoksundo Park permit costs approximately NPR 3000 (USD 28) for foreign visitors, whereas for SAARC nationalities, it is priced at only USD 12 (NPR 1500) and NPR 25 for Nepalese visitors.
  • Restricted Area Permit for Dolpo only costs approx. USD 20 (NPR 2500) for the first week (7 days), and if additional days are added, then each additional week costs USD 5 per head.

After the booking is confirmed, the required permits will be arranged by us.

Is hiring a guide compulsory for trekking Phoksundo Lake?

Yes, for the Phoksundo Lake Trek, it is mandatory to hire a local guide, that too through a registered local trekking company, like Destination Himalaya Treks. Even though a minimum of two trekkers in a group is no longer compulsory, hiring a guide remains compulsory, as the trail also covers the restricted area of the lower Dolpo region. Meanwhile, if you are an experienced hiker and confident that you do not need any support to carry your gear, then you can skip hiring a porter, but having a strong porter always helps to make the trip smooth and make the walk quite easier.
