Essential Information

10 Essential Things to Know Before Your Kathmandu Day Tour

  • Start Early to Avoid Crowds: If your time fits, start the tour around 9:00 AM or before that, as the durbar squares, or other stupas, are much calmer in the morning time, and get crowded in mid-day.
  • Wear Simple and Modest Clothing for temples: Please, take note to wear modest clothing, covering shoulders and knees, at the religious sites. Also, at Pashupatinath Temple, non-Hindus are not allowed to enter the inner temple area.
  • Carry Nepali rupees: If possible, carry cash in Nepali Rupees (NPR), easy to pay at local shops. You can carry USD (Dollars), Euros, or INR (Indian Rupees), or a debit card as well, but carrying local currency is easier and simpler to pay.
  • Walk along with the local tour guide: Throughout the tour, stay with the guide throughout, do not get influenced by other people, or a random guide that you meet, which may lead to a scam, so it is always best to walk and explore along with the guide (hired through the company).
  • Expect walking and stairs: The tour involves significant walking and some stair climbing at temples and hilltop sites, at Swoyambunath Temple.
  • Book in spring, autumn, or winter: Even though it is an all-year-round tour, it is best if you book it during Spring (March-May), Autumn (Sep - Nov), or winter (Dec - Feb), at monsoon, sometimes, usually there is a rainfall, especially at day and evening time, which may ruin your tour, or you might not get to explore properly, as expected. Even if you book in monsoon (June to Aug), check the weather forecast, and start the tour, or confirm the date accordingly.
  • Packing Essentials: Do not miss out on bringing essentials, like sunglasses, windproof or cover jackets (light ones), snacks, and a hat, plus a sunscreen with you, to protect from the day's heat.
  • Respect funeral rites at Pashupatinath: This is a sacred site of birth and death; observe quietly and avoid photographing mourners.
  • Try local Nepali food: It is always suggested that you have local meals, the best available in the area, to enhance your experience.
  • Bargain politely for souvenirs: Prices for souvenirs are often negotiable; don’t accept the first quote.
