How safe is it to undertake the Annapurna Circuit Trail in Seven Days?

Even though this is a Rapid Annapurna Circuit 7 Days Trek, starting soon from Chame, rather than stopping by Besisahar, and commencing the journey through the isolated and varied terrains, this trip is surely safe to undertake.

While this himalayan adventure takes seven days to complete, it might be physically exhausting to some, due to several ascents and descents, with trail hazards, where the standard itinerary takes almost 12 to 16 days, with two acclimatisation days, this route jumps right into Chame (2630 m), from Kathmandu (1360 m), hitting almost 1000 meters elevation gain, one who do not have any prior experience might get the altitude sickness symptoms such as headaches and nausea, so, make sure to follow the safety guildelins for AMS, from the very beginning.

The good part about our itinerary is that it includes an acclimatisation day at Manang, before you ascend higher and touch the altitude of 4000 meters. It is an effective plan to make sure that you make the slow-paced hike and get used to the massive elevation gain, making sure that this trek becomes safe to undertake. Besides, although it is a remote and isolated terrain, the route is well facilitated with well marked trailhead, where you can meet many hikers all along, and the locals offer warm hospitality as well, not making you feel left out.

The only thing to be cautious about is that there are many uneven trails, loose scree, and weather shifts constantly near the Thorong La Pass, which might lead to injuries if you are hiking independently without guide, meanwhile, navigating along our experienced licensed medically trained guide ensures safe ascend, and quick medical emergency response, if in case any unfortunate situations occurs, which is still a rare part, making the trip, surely safe to commence, with a gradual ascend of 400-500 meters only.

The road pathway navigates through the distinct landscapes, while passing from lush green valleys (hills), multiple city areas, bustling towns, roaring rivers, with some glimpses of fishing and rafting as well, and several villages in between. After getting to Besisahar, we will catch a jeep for another 3 hours, traversing through the notable key ancient classical stops such as Bulbule, Chamche, Dharaoani, Koto, with the first glimpse of several himalayan ranges such as Mount Manaslu, Annapurna, Lamjung Himal, etc., while driving towards Chame along the Marshyangdi River.

Upon attaining Chame, also known as the starting point of the trekking trail and headquarters, we will set our backpacks and enjoy the first overnight stay at Annapurna region, immersing in the warm hospitality of Tibetans. As the driveway lasts for almost 10 hours, make sure to get a proper rest, as our hike proceeds from tomorrow.

Max Altitude: 2670 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 9 hours

The walking trekking trail starts today, as we proceed our hike towards Upper Pisang from Chame via the Marshyangdi River, side by side, following the thick dense forested area, navigating through blooming red rhododendrons, pines, small river streams, and the chirping sounds of birds, for the first and last time along today's route. As it is the last trailhead, via woodlands, from tomorrow onwards, we go to higher altitudes with rugged and dry terrains, making the best out of it, clicking great snapshots. The first ascent showcases the wide-angle panorama insight of the mountains, Paungda Dada Rock, and Swargadwari Danda. While ascending higher, we get closer to Upper Pisang - 3260 meters, the exhilarating glimpse of the thundering peaks, and the first glance of Pisang Peak. As we make our overnight stay at the Pisang, make sure to wander around the nearby villages that demonstrate the wide view of the Longyo Danda and Kuntu Danda.

Max Altitude: 3260 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 6 hoursDistance: 12.2 km

After having breakfast, the trailhead begins, entering the thin forested area of pines and juniper, crossing several bridges, and the steep sections, as we make our way towards the higher altitude Tibetan villages of Gheru (3668 m), Ngawal and Bryaga, with the Tibetan dotted route, with mani walls, chortens, whitely washed chortens, with the prominent views of Annapurna I, II, IV, Lamjung Himal, Khamgsar Kang, Chulu East, Pisang Peak, and even Tilicho Peak, rising highly just in the front. As we have hit such a high elevation, and crossing one of the highest passes is just one step ahead, an acclimatisation day at Manang (3519 meters), to the rising high elevation and avoid the risk of altitude sickness. Setting a rest day for 1 day is crucial, and an intelligent way to ascend safely on the following days, which even takes us to the higher altitude above sea level. However, acclimatisation day doesn't mean just sitting at the tea house, exploring the village, we will go almost 400-500 meters above altitude, higher than where we are staying for now, that is why we've set two side trips towards Lama Cave and Gangapurna Lake (4500 meters). Lama Cave is a famous spot that hikers usually visit to get blessings for the upcoming adventure, or cross the high pass of Throung La safely and soundly, which used to be a ritual back then, as the Lama couple used to take 100 rupees and give blessings. Still, many trekkers visit this significant place to complete the adventure smoothly.

After visiting Lama Cave, we will ascend to Ice Lake, which soars at an elevation of 4500 meters, that unravel the 360 degree views of the mountains such as Pisang, Chilang, and the Annapurna range, reflecting in the wetland. Returning to the tea house at Manang, we will explore the village more in depth, visiting nearby monasteries, local shops, tea shops, and so on, making this day truly worth it.

We can also see blue sheep (chyangra), grazing at the farms, as the route was also a popular ancient trading route between Nepal and Tibet. From Yak Kharka, we will take an ascent to Thorung Phedi, from the east bank of the Jarang Khola. After traversing through 6-7 hours of hiking, we will finally reach Thorung Phedi, our final destination for today.

Max Altitude: 4548 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 6 hoursDistance: 13.6 km

Today marks the longest day of the trek, where we will head to the thrilling Thorong La Pass, which also marks our ultimate destination as well. After packing our food (breakfast), at around 3:30 AM, we will proceed on our journey. The morning proceeding time can be delayed if you want to 4:30 AM, as well; however, please take note that to enjoy the sunrise vista over the mountains and avoid the strong windy situations, the most effective timeframe remains 3:30 AM. The trail begins, passing through steep, desert and rocky sections, with no signs of a tea house, and only the towering huge brown Tibetan plateau landscapes, and slowly transitions into a more slippery and alpine valley, as we get near and to the closer to the thrilling pass.

Upon attaining our main destination, Thorong La Pass (5416 m), the breathtakingly spellbinding sunrise views over the himalayan range, such as Gangapurna, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri massif, surely leave us in awe. After descending from here, we will enter the Mustang region and visit the holy Muktinath Temple, one of the most significant Hindu and Buddhist pilgrimage sites, featuring a hot spring and a natural flaming gas called Agni. Afterwards, visiting the temple, we will have lunch and set out on a jeep drive to Jomsom at 2720 meters, and stay overnight in Jomsom.

Essential Information

Best Seasons for 7 Days Annapurna Circuit Trek

The ideal time to take the Annapurna Circuit Trek in 7 days stands out to be Spring, starting from mid-March till the very end of May, and Autumn (September to November), where the weather and climatic conditions remain stable with a mere chance of rainfall as well. During this particular timeframe, the temperature remains mild, moderately humid, without being completely heated, sunny, for all day long, allowing a hike in chill climatic conditions, without draining anyone out. These two seasons are also considered the peak season here in Nepal, for any kind of himalayan adventure, due to the perfect blend of weather, dry navigation route, where one can walk along with ease, covering such a long duration.

Firstly, referring to the Spring season, the whole forested trailhead thrives in the blooming colourful red rhododendrons, pines and white orchids, fusing exceptionally with the dramatic landscapes, captivating hikers and making them engaged, despite the long trekking distance. The day, at the same time, also lasts for longer sunlight hours, where you can explore more out of the trailhead, without worrying about darkness, suits those who are beginners, as they do not have to speed up the hiking pace, and walk along at their own pace, with sunny days. Besides, as this span of the year comes after the end of the wintertime, the temperature doesn't exceed 22 degrees Celsius, or fall below -5 degrees near the pass, making it cosy at night, and comfortable, hike at the day as well.

The season of Autumn is considered the peak time, and also, a crowded span of the year, where the trail witnesses almost double the number of hikers than in other season, where the major festivals Dashain and Tihar falls in between, lasting for 10-15 days, attracting hikers domestically (nepalese), due to public holidays, hence, one can also, learn the cultures, traditions and intercultures of the diverse ethnic groups, at this time. Another reason for being in a peak season is that, as this time of the year comes after the conclusion of the monsoon season, there is a low chance or almost zero chance of precipitation (rainfall) and snowfall, contributing to the route being drier, and making the navigation smoother at the same time. The weather and climate situations also remain stable, offering a crystal clear panorama of the snowcapped mountains and surroundings.

Meanwhile, undertaking this 1-week Thorong La Pass Trek in the winter (December, January and February) or monsoon season starting from June to August is not suggested as these season, offers heavy cloud bursts, sometimes blocking the route to the pass, and disrupting the adventure in between, with a high probability of not completing this trek within a week. If you are still considering these seasons, then make sure to elongate the trek for more days, follow a gradual pace, and a moderate pace hike that suits your experience and fitness level, with the assistance of our expert teams.

Annapurna Circuit Trek 7 Days Difficulty Level

The Seven Days trek to the Annapurna Circuit falls under a moderately challenging adventure, which is only suggested to hikers with prior experience and a strong physical fitness, as this trailhead demands atleast 5-6 hours pace of hike, daily. The daily distance trekking coverage is not what makes this trip challenging; however, the navigation along the varied terrains, via forested trail, rugged rocky sections, alpine slippery sections and several ascents and descents, might be a bit too much for beginners to undertake, with such a changing altitude each day. Other than that, as this trek takes you to the highest altitude of 5416 meters at Thorang La Pass, gaining almost 4000 meters in altitude starting from Kathmandu (1360 m), the rapid altitude gain might pose a high risk of altitude sickness. Make sure to follow the safety preventive guidelines from the very beginning.

Nonetheless, despite all these challenges, our 7-day Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary is expertly crafted with only 300-400 meters of elevation gain each day, letting your body adopt the rising high altitude, avoiding the risk of AMS on the very first hand. Besides, 1 acclimatisation day is included at Manang (3519 meters), with a side trip to Ice Lake, so that your body can proceed to cross the high pass with ease, without any possibility of AMS, as well. Before starting this adventure, ensure that, you are fully prepared physically, through cardiovascular exercises, and also, mentally fit and optimistic, by engaging in research on what to expect along the trail, and follow the preventive measures such as hydrating well enough, avoiding mouth dryness, drinking atleast 3-4 liters of water, avoiding alcohol beverages, smoking and fueling the body with nutritious meals, for such a long coverage of distance and walking trail.

Apart from that, take a good note, the weather is uncertain in the Himalayas, even at times, which are known as the peak seasons, so comprehensively pack the gears and essentials of all four seasons, foremergency situations like down jackets, crampons, waterproof jackets, and covers of the bags, to commence on this journey more hassle-free. Besides, our experienced trekking licensed guide assists you throughout the journey, who is experienced, medically trained and equipped as well, so navigating along with him makes the trip easier to commence, making it a beginner friendly as well, with our finely crafted itinerary as well.

Is obtaining Travel Insurance mandatory for this Quick Adventure?

Yes, no matter how experienced you are, how well-crafted the itinerary is, and how safe the trailhead is to commence, travel insurance is one of the most crucial aspects for any high-altitude adventure that must cover all the essentials. Please, take a note that, we are not stating that, this Rapid ACT Trek, is not safe to commence, however, undertaking the himalayan trip, above 3000 meters, where the air is unusual and thin, the possible risk of altiude sickness is always there, especially, when you are attaining the highest altitude at 5416 meters at Thorong La Pass, hence, purchasing travel insurance is a must for a peace of mind and also, avoid the frustrating medical bills, and quick medical response, if any unexpected medical conditions occur.

While attaining the insurance, make sure that the policy covers all the essentials, such as trip delay/cancellation, theft, baggage lost, minor medical coverage, medical bills for hospitals, and most importantly, the helicopter evacuation above 3000-5500 metes, so that in case of major issues, such as altitude sickness, you will be evacuated immediately, via helicopter. After booking your trek, do not miss out on sending your insurance documents (if you have any).
