The Poon Hill Trek is a short, quick, and easy trail in the Annapurna region that is gaining huge popularity, as it offers a mini mountain-climbing experience without much physical effort or a long time commitment. If you are someone who wants to unravel the beauty of the himalayas, however, setting yourself back, thinking, it is demanding or costs you thousands of dollars, then, considering Poon Hill Trekking shall be your perfect choice. The trails are well maintained, straightforward, and the lodges (accommodations) are the best that you can find in such mountain areas, where you do not need to panic, where to stay, finding amenities, or the wide variations of meals as well.

The route can be commenced by beginners, who have zero himalayan experience, and can also be safely done by kids or senior citizens, as the navigation trailhead is not isolated or ruggedly remote, where you'll meet many trekkers and locals along the way. The Poon Hill Trek can be completed in 6 days, starting from Kathmandu, the capital city; however, if you've already arrived in Pokhara, the gateway to Annapurna hikes, then you can choose the 4-day Ghorepani Trek from Pokhara, as well. The maximum altitude this trip reaches is 3210 meters, with a gradual rise; thus, the risk of altitude sickness is low, making it ideal for family treks, student groups, and first-timers as well.

Our 6-day hike to Ghorepani and Poon Hill begins in Kathmandu, with a 7-8 hour drive to Pokhara, experiencing another side of the land of himalayas, Nepal, via bustling towns, green hills, huge landscapes, roaring rivers, and small towns. Then, on the next day, from Pokhara we will take a 2-hour jeep drive towards Birethanti, the starting point of the walking trail, as we march our way to Ulleri through a stone uphill walk.

On the 4th day, the trail leads us to Ghorepani, exploring the deeper route of the Annapurna Conservation Area, and takes a 45-minute morning ascent to the iconic Poon Hill View Point, with the breathtaking sunrise over the snowcapped himalayan peaks, including Dhaulagiri, Macchapuchare, Annapurna, Manaslu, and many more under the golden hues and fresh mountain air. The route then takes a descent to Tadapani and Ghandruk village on the consecutive days, and concludes with a drive back to Pokhara.

Throughout, you get to explore remote traditional villages, unique cultures and traditions, with a meander along the woodland through river streams, waterfalls, suspension bridges, winding off through lush green forest, where the journey is filled with laughter, joy, and unforgettable memories. The Poon Hill Trek 6 days, stands out as a cultural trek, a hassle-free Himalayan odyssey, and a budget-friendly mountain excursion that showcases the 360-degree views of mountains, and an accomplishment of reaching a certain height, as a reward, making your days spent on the trail worth it.

Poon Hill

Poon Hill, perched at an altitude of 3210 m, is one of the best vantage points within the Annapurna region, where almost eight peaks above 7000 meters are visible along with Annapurna I (8091 m), Dhaulagiri I (8167 m), Fishtail (6993 m), Nilgiri, and the famous Mardi Himal, on its fish lense panorama angle. While other viewpoint treks, such as high mountain passes or the base camps, demand a good time frame and prior high altitude experience, the Poon Hill viewpoint stands out from all, as it is a beginner-friendly trek, and can be achieved safely just within 3 to 5 days from Pokhara. It is also a popular destination in the himalayas, which you can either do solely or combine as a side trip, along the way to Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) as well, depending on your preference.

Ghorepani

The Ghorepani village is basically popularized as a base for Poonhill, or the key overnight stop, within the Annapurna Conservation Area, which lies amid the green hills and mountains, with the blooming rhododendrons, and sweeping snowcapped, alluring peaks. It is a remote traditional village, hosted by Gurung and Magar families, which requires two permits, an ACAP and a TIMS Card, to get access to this territory, as it lies within the protected area. In ancient times, it used to be a watering stop for horses and traders, as it was an ancient Tibetan salt route, so the name came from ghora pani, which means horse water in English terms. While staying here overnight, it gives you time to relish and prepare yourself for the morning climb to the Poonhill on the next day.

Ghandruk Village

Ghandruk is one of the stunningly beautiful villages in Nepal, that is situated at 2012 meters, surrounded by lovely hills, slate-roofed traditional villages, and stone houses, just under the huge mountains such as Annapurna South, I-IV, Gangapurna, Hiunchuli, and Macchapuchare, which makes the settlement more intriguing. It is also one of the most-loved trekking destinations for tourists, and a popular stop on social media. where you get to visit the Gurung Cultural Museum, wear traditional dresses, attires, jewels, and explore the vantage point, with a short 20-minute walk, enjoying the upfront mountain views.

Mountain Views

Throughout the journey, several legendary mountains, almost 18 countable himalayan peaks, reward you, rising high at the height of 6000 meters to 8000 meters, including Dhaulagiri I (8167 m), Annapurna I (8091 m), Annapurna South (7219 m), Annapurna II, III, Gangapurna (7455 m), Machapuchre (6993 m), Hiunchuli (6441 m), Nilgiri (7061 m), Dhampus Peak (6012 m), Lamjung Himal (6983 m), Mt. Manaslu, world's 8th tallest peak, Bharha Chuli (7647m), and the newly famous peak, Mardi Himal (5553 m). The panoramic vista becomes more lively, with the colorful prayer flags fluttering in the heavy winds, and just behind the rhododendrons, and pink, golden hues, creating a completely unique insight into the giants.

Essential Information

Trek Difficulty

The Poon Hill Trek is considered an easy trekking route in Nepal, which navigates through straight foward trail, and several tea houses, making it comfortable for beginners and families. It falls under moderate in difficulty, which demands only 3-4 hours of navigation, only for 4 days within the himalayan trails, and on two consecutive days, it is set for an arrival in Nepal, and drive to Pokhara, from Kathmandu, thus, you will only be spending four nights, that too accompanied by many trekkers, locals, and villages in between. Hence, unlike other trails, it is a simple, straight, and quick adventure, which is doable by every age group and beginners. The only challenging portion that you will encounter during the 6-day Poon Hill Trek is when undertaking an uphill walk to Ulleri via a stone staircase. Other than that, the morning ascent to the viewpoint is easy, lasting for 2 hrs round trip, and the road to get to the starting point is not too bumpy, taking you to the walking trail in a comfortable ride.

Hence, no matter whether you are trekking with kids, or how old you are, even above 60+ years old, with the assistance of the licensed trekking guide, and well-paved terrains, the journey promises to be hassle-free and safe.

Altitude Sickness

When it comes to high altitude treks, the only thing that every hiker must consider is the possibility of altitude sickness, and getting prepared accordingly. However, as the Poon Hill Ghandruk Trek only takes you to the highest point at 3210 meters, with gradually rising elevation, the risk of altitude sickness is rare or almost zero, as there are no records as such. Just follow the safety guide, such as hydrating well enough, fuel your body with nutritious meals, packed with carbs, proteins, and some fats, avoid over-consuming caffeine and alcohol beverages, and walk along with the trekking guide, at your own pace. The 6-day itinerary is customised with enough rest days and gains only 300-400 meters, which plays a significant role in minimising the risk of AMS.

Best Seasons

The Poon Hill Ghorepani Trek stands out as an all-year-round trekking trail in Nepal that can be done at any time of the year, as the trails are easy, well-paved, and the tea houses remain available, all the time, when pre-booked. Meanwhile, in terms of views, trailhead conditions, and weather situations, the ideal times are Spring, from March to the end of May, and Autumn, from September to November. But, if time does not get adjusted within these two particular seasons, then you can consider the trip in winter and monsoon as well, with prior preparations and gear.

The Spring is known as one of the best seasons to trek to Poon Hill and Ghorepani, where the lush green valleys thrive in the beauty of colours, especially bloom beautifully with red rhododendrons, oaks, and pines. During this time, the day sunlight lasts for a longer time, where you can wander or explore more, out of the Annapurna region, without having to worry, reaching the next stopping point on time. The days are mild, and nights are warm as well, ensuring a cosy night and a chill hike, without draining you out physically.

Apart from Spring, the Autumn season is also known as the ideal time and peak crowded season, for this hike, where the major nepal's major festivals, Dashain and Tihar, enthrall the trekkers to experience local celebrations, in himalayan style. As the season comes after the end of the monsoon time, the chances of precipitation (rain and snowfall) are less, promising the trails to remain dry and smooth to commence through, with impeccable mountain and golden landscape insights. The day temperature remains moderate, whereas nights can be cold, at Ghorepani, but not too much, just upto 6-7 degrees Celsius; however, the communal dining area and heating blanket keep you warm.

On the other hand, the winter season (Dec, Jan, and Feb) and monsoon (Jun - Aug) mark the most unfavourable time, where there are high chances of precipitation (rain and snowfall), making the trail muddy, slippery, and icy, with a sudden drop in temperature up to- 10 degrees Celsius. As the trailhead, covering more forest areas, trailing across muddy routes, and settling at tea houses, with mosquitoes, can be a big hurdle for beginners. However, if you are an experienced hiker, having prior high altitude knowledge, then commencing the journey during off-season time will surely amuse you, with a unique perspective of mountains and landscapes.

Foods and Accommodations

The Poon Hill and Ghorepani route offers a wide variety of meals and tea houses, to accommodate, where the lodges are maintained and run by the local communities, so expect to be more on the simpler side. Meanwhile, even though they are quite simple, it has every amenity, such as wifi, laundry, and charging facilities. The rooms are on a twin, single, or group basis, as well, which can be managed, as per the number of hikers, for instance; if you are trekking solo, then a private room can be arranged accordingly. The charging pots are only available in the dining area, with an extra fare of $2-$3 depending on the hourly basis, so carry a power bank for more feasibility. The beds are comfortable and hygienically maintained and sanitised, as well.

Whereas, for the meals, you will find every option, from veg, vegan to non-vegeterian ones, that will be cooked freshly soon after you order the meals. It has wide options, such as western, indian, asian, and local, so you do not have to worry whether the meals cater for your taste and preferences.

Required Permits

For the Poon Hill Trek, two essential permits are required: firstly, the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and the TIMS Card (Trekkers Information Management System Card), which you can obtain either in Kathmandu or Pokhara. No restricted area trekking permits are required; however, you must register the permits along the trekking guide, via a local travel agency, for the safety and to preserve the ecosystem and cultures of the territory, and keep track of the trekkers.

ACAP costs, NPR 3000 (USD 28) for foreigners, and cost only NPR 1000 (USD 8) for the SAARC nationalities.

For the TIMS Card, the costing remains the same for everyone, i.e, NPR 2000 (USD 18), per head.
