Explore Key Attractions and Iconic Landmarks on the 12-Day Mount Everest Base Camp Trek

Here are some of the major sites, viewpoints, and some of the major highlights that the 12 Days EBC Hike takes you to, all along as mentioned below, right from the beginning to the end, exploring every corner of the trekking trail and the pristine Sagarmatha National Park.

Flight to Lukla: Glance at the Aerial Mountain Views

The journey begins with a small aircraft, Lukla Flight, which is an astonishing journey itself, that shows you the perfect transition from the bustling, noisy city area to the Himalayas' calming panorama of the mountains. While being seated at the window seat, expect to be welcomed with the first glimpse of the Himalayan range, such as Nuptse, Langtang Lirung, Cho Oyu, and Mount Everest (8848.88 meters) rising high in the clear sky, before landing at Lukla Airport. It is also known as the Tenzing-Hillary Airport, a gateway for every adventure seeker to this pristine landmark of the Everest region, with the bustling town, cafes, monasteries nearby, and restaurants, with several viewpoints, where you can chill out, before starting the trekking trail to Phakding.

Namche Bazaar: Explore the Bustling Town and Ancient Landmark

Perched at an elevation of 3440 meters, Namche Bazaar is one of the prominent and central spots for acclimatisation, before moving any further or ascending higher, where you can take side trips to the world's highest situated 5-star hotel - Everest View Hotel, or Khumjung village, one of the oldest Sherpa villages. In the old days, Namche used to be the checkpoint for the salt trade, to exchange yak cheese, salt, and chhurpi (solid cheese), or other items, including textiles and teas.

The trades were the main source of livelihood for the sherpas and Tibetan merchants, and still in the present days, you can get a glimpse of the Tibetan goods, such as thangka paintings, handily embroidered items, handicraft jewels, yak dairy products, in local shops, showing the ancient trading market till today.

While staying here, you can explore many cafes, bars, and bakery shops selling Swiss-style bakeries such as muffins, croissants, brownies, and try Americanos (straight made out of Himalayan beans), and buy some of the hand-made items resembling Sherpa culture and the Great Himalayas, back to your home and loved ones. All in all, Namche Bazar is a reminder that even at such an elevation, the luxury and modernisation thrive, without impacting the rich historical landmarks and the ancient culture and traditions.

Khumjung Monastery: The Mysterious Yeti Scalp

Khumjung Monastery is a popular side trip visit during this trek to Everest Base Camp, which is one of the most notable spots, that is said to be the monastery where the yeti head scalp is preserved, which gained lots of media attention worldwide, and even the researchers.

Whether it is a belief, myth, or reality, it remains uncovered, whereas the rumours about the YETI- The snowman, were speculated when the first summitter, Edmund Hillary, back in the 1960s, when the legend himself aimed to search for the evidence of the wild snowman. The yeti is basically a large huge ape-like creature; some consider it a good luck charm and some as a protector of the Himalayas, as well, and whether it is real, or just a mythical belief, remains questionable to date.

Khumjung Village: Hillary Trust School and Supportive Hospital

After the successful ascent by Sir Edmund Hillary, the first person to ascender to Everest, he wanted to do something back for the community of the Sherpa locals. That is why Edmund Hillary built Khumjung Secondary School back in 1961, to provide quality education to the children in the Everest region, as a gratitude to the Sherpa porters and guides, who assist every summiter to the mountains, showing their bravery. In the present day, due to the kind-hearted people like you, with the trustworthy funds, many computer labs, libraries, and classes are facilitated with desks, boards, and good, talented teachers, which provides new life to Sherpa kids, to pursue further careers with quality education and explore the world, beyond just climbing and portering.

On the other hand, Khumjung village is also marked as a home to a supportive hospital that provides healthcare and medical emergency facilities to trekkers and Sherpa locals, which was contributed by the Hillary Trust Fund, which has a huge impact in the Khumbu region. With the spirit of the humanitarian and great contribution, today, the education sector and health facilities have flourished in the Himalayas, changing and saving the lives of thousands of people.

Tengboche Monastery: Where Tibetan culture Thrives with the Mountain Views

Tengboche Monastery is also known as Thyangboche, which stands out to be the largest gompa (Tibetan monastery) of the Khumbu region, hosting several rituals, festivals, like Mani Rimdu, and daily prayers or chantings of the monks. Perched on the hillside, in the confluence between the roaring Dudh Koshi valley and the Imja Khola, straight out from the Island Peak, Tengboche showcases the alluring views of the captivating mountains such as Ama Dablam, Tharmseku, Cho Oyu, and a glimpse of Mount Everest as well, presenting a blend of beauty and cultural heritage sites. Whereas, while settling at the Tengboche village, you get to participate and see the monks' daily prayers, and pass via the mani walls, whitely washed chortens, and the colourful Tibetan prayer flags, showing the rich Tibetan Buddhism influence culture.

Side Trip to Nangkartshang Peak (5083 meters)

During the second acclimatisation day at Dingboche, while venturing out on the Everest Base Camp 12 Days Trek, the side trip includes an uphill walk to Nangkartshang Peak, located at 5083 meters. This excursion, or you can say rest day, is important before taking any further altitude gain, to acclimate to the rising high elevation and be risk-free from high mountain sickness, which is a round trip of 5 to 6 hours of time covering 9 to 10 km back and forth. The top of the Nangkartshang Peak shows the captivating panoramic views of several mountains, including Cho Oyu, Makalu, Lhotse, Nuptse, Island Peak, and even the 1st prominent view of Mount. Everest, making the rest day worth it.

Everest Base Camp: Reach the foothill of the world's highest mountain

Standing at an elevation at such sea level of 5364 meters, along the Khumbu glacier and the thundering mountains of Lhotshe and Nuptshe, Everest Base Camp is a launching pad for the summiters, and the pinnacle of the trekking as well, so standing at the foothill of Mount Everest (8848.88 m) is surely an once in a lifetime moment.

Hence, expect to get an insight into many motivational climbers and keen-minded hikers, like you, all along, during this Everest Budget Trek.

Thrilling Ascent to Kala Patthar: Feel the Everest Panorama Sunrise

Kala Patthar stands out being one of the legendary viewpoints to witness the surreal panorama of Mount Everest, where the huge rock formation has seen the joys of adventure seekers, for finally being the nearest possible to the almighty peak. Well, to be honest, it is an emotional moment that every hiker will feel, as Kala Patthar also marks its name as being the highest elevation that anyone can ever reach to witness the world's tallest mountain without any climbing permit.

The journey to Kala Patthar sets off from Gorakshep at 4 AM, passing through moraine, and the sunrise golden hour view, colouring the several mountains such as Cho Oyu, Nuptse, Lhotse, Makalu, and a 360-degree panorama of the Everest, is surely unbelievable. When is the best time to undertake the Everest Trek?

The ideal seasons to visit Everest Base Camp for 12 days stand out to be Spring (March to May), and Autumn (September, October, and November), and it remains the same for any duration of the Everest Budget Trek. This span of the year offers the ideal weather and moderate temperature conditions, with mild humidity, without any risk of high levels of snowfall and rainfall, making the route safe to undertake. Whereas, at the same time, if you are looking forward to doing this Himalayan trek during the monsoon and winter, then it is undoubtedly possible, but make sure to recognise your ability to handle cold weather and harsh, snowy trailheads, at higher altitudes, and extremely muddy forest routes.

During the Spring season, from mid-March to late May, the forest and lush green valley are beautifully thriving in the shade of red rhododendrons, and offer long hours of daylight, where you get to explore more and enjoy the picturesque flora comfortably. The temperature range usually ranges from 5 to 12 degrees Celsius during the day, whereas, might drop to -5 degrees Celsius near base camp, which is comfortable enough, because it is a high altitude trek, with clear views of mountains and landscapes transitioning from woodland to alpine valley.

On the other hand, Autumn stands out as the busiest and peak season for the Everest Base Camp Trek 12 days, as it comes after the end of the monsoon in the Himalayas, the rainfall clears, the dust out, and the fogginess clears, showing the best prominent views of the Himalayas. The temperature lies between 5 to 14 degrees Celsius, in the daytime, and doesn't fall below 0 degrees Celsius, at night, even at higher altitudes, making it one of the most ideal seasons, even for beginners, without draining you out or creating any possibility of high mountain sickness. Apart from that, the main festivals - Dashain and Tihar- fall between September to November, the Autumn in the Khumbu region, are fully thrived with celebrations and show you the reunion of family, back home.

With the perfect blend of the weather and favourable climatic conditions, with the unhidden views of the Himalayan panorama, with dry terrains to venture out, Spring and Autumn are the best times for the budget trek to Everest Base Camp.

Confused about choosing one? Ideal seasons not matching your Holiday Duration and Preferences?

  • Winter (December, January and February): High level of snowfall, above 4000 meters, after crossing Dingboche is expected, with cold temperature and climatic conditions below -5 to -12 degrees Celsius, near the base camp. While the experienced hikers tend to fall in love and adore the winter season, due to snowy navigation and challenges, willing to push limits, and the rewards are the snow-wrapped mountains, whereas it is not suggested for first-time hikers.
  • Spring (March to May): If you love the colourful blooming flowers such as rhododendrons, the national flower of Nepal, white pines and orchids, and crave to seek more, in the sunlight hours day, then choose the season of spring. Someone who prefers, easier and smoother adventure, navigating through dry terrains, where the clear weather and temperature (humidity) match each other, offering a chill hike, with fresh air, do not miss out exploring the Khumbu region, at this period of time.
  • Monsoon (June to August): Known as a nightmare, time for high Himalayan adventure, where the trail to Everest Base Camp becomes fully muddy, slippery, and infested other mosquitoes, due to heavy rainfall, making the trip strenuous. At the same time, heavy precipitation (snowfall) and the continuous changes in weather and temperature might be frustrating to new hikers, as the clear views of the mountains become questionable at the same time.
  • Autumn (September to November): Perfect weather, stable climatic conditions, with the distinct insight of the panoramic Himalayan peaks, and the boisterous celebration of Tihar and Dashain keep you intrigued.

Any of the ideal seasons between two springs and autumns doesn't matches your perfect time duration and holiday or personal choices. Well, if that's the case, then do not let your timing become your only reason to shatter your dreams. We offer, off season trekking adventure to the base camp safely, with the assistance of the expert guidance, where the itinerary will be arranged, that fits your pace level, and weather demands as well, thus, you can consider opting for mosoon or winter as well, with proper preparations beforehand, and comprehensive packing gears and essentials, as the trip demands.

How weather affect Lukla Flights: What You Must Know?

One of the major things to consider during the 12 Days Mount Everest Base Camp Trek is the delay of the Lukla Flight, which might get delayed for 1 day, or diverted to Manthali Airport - Ramechhap, so make sure to be prepared accordingly. So, you might wonder, why does the Lukla Flight get diverted? Well, to answer your generic question, during the peak season, there is a huge air traffic, and for safe air navigation, instead of taking a flight from Kathmandu - Lukla, you will take a flight from Manthali Ramechhap, for safety purposes.

If it gets rerouted to Manthali, then our licensed trekking guide, will come to pick you up at early morning to take a drive to Ramechhap for 5 to 6 hours, and then take a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla, whereas, if everything goes, right wih air traffic, then, we will take a direct flight to Lukla from Kathmandu, for straight for 35 minutes.

On the other hand, also note down, to take 1-2 contingency days (extra days), for the flight back home, as if the weather gets worse (rainfall/snowfall), the Lukla flight might get delayed for 1-2 days, which happens rarely, during peak seasons, however it is suggested to take extra days, and book flight back to your country accordingly. Also, if the regular flight gets delayed, then you can opt for a Helicopter tour  to either reach Lukla, or from Lukla, or Goarkshep, with an additional cost from USD 350 to USD 500, depending on the route and passengers.

To know more, you can check our recently updated blog: Lukla Airport, which has an overview regarding the flights, delays, and cancellation possibilities, and so on.

A Typical Day during the 12-day Everest Base Camp Trek: What does everyday look like?

Every day, something new unfolds, and unique features will tend to reward you throughout the journey, as the trek itself passes by one of the most iconic trailheads - the Everest region and the world's UNESCO heritage site - Sagarmatha National Park, the pristine landmark will amuse you. Throughout the Everest Budget Trek, you will be assisted by our experienced licensed guide, who will show you safe navigation, with a brief explanation about monasteries, mountains, and every highlighted aspect of the iconic region. Now, let's take a brief look at what everyday life looks like.

The morning basically begins with a sunrise view of the Himalayan panorama range, and breakfast will be served at 7:00 AM, at the dining area, or the sitting area outside, along the surrounding mountains. After the delicious breakfast, is delved in, we will begin our trip sharply at 8:00 AM, or before that, in the mild humidity. Also, if possible, then, try to head out earlier, so the viewpoints won't get disturbed by the huge crowds.

The trekking route takes you through several kinds of climatic zones and terrains, from woodlands with the blooming rhododendrons in dense forest, and Sherpa villages in between, exploring culture, with a gradual open landscape of mountains, showing the marvellous transition of the highlands.

Approximately 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM, the lunch hour begins, at the stopping point of the tea house, in between the trekking trail; also take note that, some days, we might carry a packed breakfast or lunch, like during an ascent to Kala Patthar, as we must set off earlier, to not miss out the sunrise mountain views. Between 3:00 to 5:00 PM, we'll basically reach the tea house, our next destination (stopping point). If you get there earlier, then explore the nearby viewpoints, monasteries, and Sherpa villages, but make sure to come back to the tea house before darkness (before 6:00 PM).

The dinner will be served before 7:00 PM or between 7:30 PM. After savouring dinner, we will discuss with the trekking guide regarding what to expect on the very next day. If you feel any confusion, then make sure to raise queries (questions). The rest of the evening, make the most out of it by engaging in interaction with locals, playing UNO cards, music, dances, and musical instruments, and get a good night's sleep, and dream about what another day has got to reward you.

Possible Risk of Altitude Sickness, and Safety Guidelines to Follow Thoroughly

The risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) remains one of the most vital aspects during any Himalayan adventure; however, during this 12-day Everest Base Camp Budget Trek, the chances of altitude sickness are low, and as the itinerary involves two acclimatisation days. On top of that, our Everest Budget Trek doesn't ascend more than 400 to 500 meters per day, where you'll gradually ascend, adapting to the rising elevation, without rushing the itinerary. 1 acclimatisation day is set in Namche Bazaar, and another in Dengboche, intelligently, with the experiences of professional teams, so before you ascend higher, your body gets used to such adverse mountain altitude.

Throughout this trip, you will be assisted by an experienced licensed trekking guide, who is medically equipped, and who will become your first-hand medical assistance if any unfortunate minor accidents occur; however, to avoid such challenges, they follow major preventive guidelines, and navigate through safe areas, hence, the risk remains very low. Meanwhile, some safety measures are highly suggested to follow along the trekking route to prevent hazardous conditions like altitude sickness:

  • Make sure to drink at least 4-5 litres of water per day, to avoid dehydration and mouth dryness
  • Consume healthy, nutritious foods (meals), consisting of all the fibres, proteins, and carbs, to energise the body for the long journey ahead
  • Take a gradual ascent of 400 - 500 meters per day, not covering more than 12 kilometres beyond 8 hours, and hike slowly and effectively
  • Avoid smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages after crossing the elevation, 3000 meters, instead, have some garlic soups or ginger soups, to stay warm
  • Track your pulse rate through an oximeter at every stopping point, and if it's not normal, then consider descending to the lower elevation or seeking medical help
  • If you feel any uncomfortable or symptoms, such as headache, loss of sleep or appetite, insomnia, vomiting, or dizziness, losing control, then inform the guide immediately

Our package covers the cost of the permits, and the paperwork will also be managed by us, soon after your booking is confirmed with us.

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit cost: USD 25 (NPR 3000) for foreign individuals, and USD 12 (NPR 1500) per head for SAARC visitors, whereas the permit cost for Nepalese citizens is free.
  • Khumbu Pasang Rural Municipality Permit cost: USD 17 (NPR 2000), for every trekker, including SAARC and Nepalese hikers

Can I skip Travel Insurance for this trip to EBC for 12 days?

No matter which Himalayan adventure you are willing to head toward, travel insurance remains a vital part, and we highly recommend you get a trip insurance policy with a good clause, even though this 12 Days Everest Trekking possesses a mere chance of any kind of challenges, like landslides, altitude sickness, or route navigation, with the assistance of a trekking licensed guide. However, as the medical accessibility is limited, and is not available after crossing Lobuche or 4000 meters, travel insurance helps with the helicopter evacuation, if things get worse, at higher altitudes, like AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness).

While opting for travel insurance, ensure that the clauses include medical injuries, theft, luggage lost, or delay and cancellation of the flight, and most importantly, make sure it has a helicopter evacuation. Having proper insurance not only allows for emergency medical assistance but also lets you hike with a free mind and saves a lot of money.

  8. Do not throw waste wherever you want; there are many dustbins in between, where you can throw the waste, and it gets disposed of later, turned into something useful.
  9. Carry reusable water bottles, so you can refill them. Rather than buying bottles and disposing of them anywhere, minimise the single-use plastic waste.
