The Manaslu Circuit is a 12‑day trek that explores Tibetan villages, reaches Manaslu Base Camp and Birendra Lake, and crosses Larkya La Pass. This is a shorter, budget‑friendly version of the classic 14‑day Manaslu Trek, carefully condensed to complete the route in just 12 consecutive days. The route follows the same trailhead but skips the two extra arrival/departure days by starting directly from Kathmandu, making it more time‑efficient and cost‑effective.

The Manaslu region stands out as one of the best trekking routes for explorers who want less crowded and untamed walking pathways, rather than the modern influx and busier Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp treks. Our 12‑day Manaslu trekking itinerary is designed for budget‑conscious travellers and those with limited time who can't commit to the longer 14 to 17-day trek.

The trip begins with a drive from Kathmandu (1,360 m) to Machakhola (890 m), and the walking trail starts the next day as you enter the protected Manaslu Conservation Area. The trail winds through lush forests, terraced fields and remote villages before climbing into alpine mountain hamlets surrounded by glaciers, dramatic landscapes and stunning peaks. Because the route lies within a restricted area requiring special trekking permits, only a small number of travellers visit, keeping the experience quiet and authentic. Accommodations are run by local families, offering a genuine opportunity to learn closely about ethnic communities, including the Tsum, Nubri, Tamang and Gurung.

Reaching the top of the pass rewards you with the expansive view of the Himalayan peaks, like Mt Manaslu (8163 m), Annapurna (8091 m), Dhaulagiri (8167 m), Hinalchuli (7423 m), Cheo Himal, Ganesh Himal, Shringi Himal, Simnang Himal, Kanguru, Himlung Himal, and Larke Peak itself, all ranging in between 6000-7000 meters.

The trek follows a gradual pace with comfortable daily ascents and includes one acclimatisation day at Sama Gaon before pushing to higher elevations. The shortest version can be done in 10 days, while the 12‑day itinerary is a well‑customised schedule that doesn’t cut corners, still giving you time for iconic side trips and the dramatic Larkya La crossing, all at a budget and time‑friendly price.

This Kathmandu‑to‑Kathmandu package includes all logistics and required permits, led by an experienced licensed trekking guide. To keep the price cost‑effective, we don't include a porter; this is a moderate trek, so you can carry your own backpack for added challenge and savings. However, if you want one, then you can just go to the add-ons option and book accordingly. If you're already in Kathmandu or prefer to arrange your own stay in the city, this is the smartest way to trek Manaslu. For your convenience, we do offer free arrival and departure airport transfers.

Trip PlanExpand all

Today kicks off your 12-day Manaslu Circuit Trek as we drive from Kathmandu to Machakhola (890 m), the official trailhead. The journey includes 2–3 stops for coffee and lunch. After Aarughat, the road turns bumpy and off‑road, so we switch to a shared jeep via Soti Khola and reach Machakhola on the banks of the Budhi Gandaki River. With the road now extending straight to Machakhola, we skip the extra day and take a direct drive, saving time while starting our adventure in the heart of the Manaslu Conservation Area.

Please take note that the trekking guide will come to pick you up at the airport, to start the journey at your designated hostel or hotel, then we will take 15 minutes taxi drive to the bus stop, Balaju-Gongabu, and commence the trip.

Today marks our first trekking day, which starts soon after breakfast, around 8:00 AM. The trail goes uphill, entering some forested area, in the first half, with blooming red rhododendrons, pines, and a lush green valley, crossing several bridges over the Budhi Gandaki River. In between, we'll pass through some of the cliffs (vantage point), from where we can take a glance at the surrounding landscapes and peaks, and small Gurung and Magar villages. We will stop by Dovan for a quick lunch and rest break, and continue the hike to Jagat, the entry point to the restricted area of Manaslu. Staying overnight at Jagat, a Gurung small settlement, with its rich cultures, traditions, heritages and warm hospitality, will give a relaxed realm, after a long day trip.

Max Altitude: 1340 m.| 4394 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5 hoursDistance: 19 km

The trail today enters the restricted protected area of the Manaslu region, registering our permits, and then takes an ascent towards Salleri and Sirdibas. After navigating via Ghate Khola, we'll reach Phillim, a large Gurung village, where we can explore sometime, get to know about the people and the village. Crossing a large suspension through the river of Budhi Gandaki, after traversing through bamboo groves and Deng Khola, we will now reach Deng.

Max Altitude: 1865 m| 6102 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 6 hoursDistance: 21 km

After having breakfast, we will proceed on the hike, along the Budhi Gandaki stream, traversing via villages such as Ghap and Prok and many other small Tibetan settlements in between. As we get to the Namrung, we can see the terraced farms and locals engaging in agricultural farming, offering a unique insight. Overnight stay at Namrung village.

Max Altitude: 2630 m | 8624 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 7 hoursDistance: 17 km

Leaving Namrung behind, the surrounding landscapes change more into thinner, finer tree line areas, brown Tibetan plateau landscapes, and the Tibetan-influenced route as we approach Shyala village. We pass by Buddhist shrines, mani walls, chortens, and many monasteries in between, including Rebung Gompa Monastery, with the backdrop of the huge, gigantic Himalayan peaks.

Max Altitude: 3500 m | 11476 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5-6 hoursDistance: 10.8 km

The journey today is quite short and quick, as we just have to cover 4 hours hike; however, some sections are a bit challenging, as we will come across steep and glacier sections. We will also visit the famous Pungen Gompa, an ancient Tibetan Buddhist monastery, located on a rocky plateau and with a breathtaking upfront vista of Mount Manaslu. Crossing Pungen Glacier, along the route, we will finally reach the Sama Gaon, one of the famous stopping points, which takes us to the best side trips within the Manaslu region.

Max Altitude: 3520 m | 11549 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 4 hoursDistance: 13 km

Today, we will take a break, rest at Sama Gaon, at the rising altitude and get prepared for the further high altitude hikes above 4000 meters. On this very day, we'll take a short hike to either Manaslu Base Camp, the foothill of the world's eighth-tallest peak, or the turquoise lake of Birendra, as you prefer.

Max Altitude: 3520 m | 11549 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea house

We'll begin early, catching sunrise over Manaslu North. The trail climbs uphill toward Samdo village alongside the Budhi Gandaki River, then follows the Larke River fed by meltwater from the Samdo Glacier with Manaslu’s peaks framing the backdrop. Further along, the path splits from the Manaslu Base Camp route and leads into juniper and pine forests. We cross a small wooden bridge, then pass a large white Kani (traditional stone gateway). Beyond the Kani lies Samdo, a quiet settlement close to the Tibetan border.

Max Altitude: 3875 m | 12713 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 4-5 hoursDistance: 14 km

Today, the hike towards Dharamsala goes through a complete, steady uphill walk. Followed by the trail past Athara Saya and Larke rivers, we will then pass Taka Choeling Gompa, with an impeccable view of the Naike and Pangboche peaks. After crossing the bridge, we stroll alongside Mani's walls and stone houses, then turn left toward Larkya Bazaar, a modest stop with few lodges. From there, we head to Dharamshala (Larke Phedi), the final camp before tackling Larkya La Pass. On the route, you’ll notice lichen-covered rocks, open grazing pastures, vibrant trees, and views of the Syacha Glacier.

Max Altitude: 4460 m | 14632 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5 hoursDistance: 11 km

This is the big day, as we will be heading to the summit of one of the iconic passes in the Himalayas. We'll wake at 4 AM, pack lunch, and head up the steep, snowy slope along the northern moraine of Larkya Glacier. With Cho Danda and Larkya Peak nearby, we cross four glacier lakes and reach Larkya La Pass (5,106 m). From the summit, panoramic views open to Cheo Himal, Himlung Himal, Samdo Peak (bordering Tibet), and Annapurna Range peaks like Annapurna II and Kang Guru. After celebrating this milestone, we descend along the Salu Dando Glacier moraine to Bhimtang. The landscape shifts from alpine to grassy as we arrive at Bhimtang village.

Max Altitude: 5160 m | 16296 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 9 hoursDistance: 21 km

The trail, today, goes all the way through the downhill section, with a distinct glance into the mountains such as Cheo Himal, Lamjung Himal, and the massive Annapurna and Manaslu range. Navigating again through the forest area, we will reach Dharapani, our destination for today.

Max Altitude: 1930 m | 6420 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 7 hoursDistance: 22 km

We walk downhill through lush green valleys and cross suspension bridges to reach Besisahar. From there, a jeep takes you to Pokhara or Kathmandu, your choice. If you'd like an extra day in Pokhara, your guide can arrange a short sightseeing tour of famous spots. Just share your plans; otherwise, we'll drive straight back to Kathmandu.

Essential Information

Level of Difficulty

The 12-day Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered a moderate to challenging excursion, which suits perfectly for those individuals with prior trekking experience or just a good physical fitness level. The trip covers approximately 177 km in 12 days, averaging 12-14 km and just 5-7 hours walking daily. Even though it is known as one of the strenuous mountain adventures, it is easier than the Everest 3 Passes or the Annapurna Circuit, standing out as smoothly accessible for fit beginners who prepare properly.

The trailhead does not include any technical sections; however, it proceeds through varied kinds of terrain, like rugged, rocky, steep, with multiple ascents and descents, which might be a bit difficult for first-timers. So, it is very crucial to engage in prior preparations through cardio or other activities, to be fit and take an easy walk every single day. The biggest obstacle is crossing the Larkya La Pass at 5160 meters, one of Nepal's most demanding high mountain passes, where on the summit day, you have to walk approximately 10-11 hours. The track is more intense than any other day, which involves steep, glacial paths and significant altitude exposure at the same time.

As long as you're fit, you're good to go. The risk of altitude sickness is low thanks to the gradual ascent and a rest day at Samagaun before the pass attempt. Apart from just relying on the itinerary, also follow the preventive guidelines throughout, such as hydrating enough, fueling the body with nutritious meals, hiring a professional local guide, and considering bringing a porter. With proper preparation and fitness, the 12-Day Manaslu Trekking offers an unforgettable adventure through remote Himalayan landscapes and pristine wilderness.

Ideal Seasons

The best time to explore Manaslu are Spring is from March to May, and Autumn from September to the end of November, due to weather stability and excellent views. During this particular season, the chances of rain and snowfall typically remain low, making the walking terrains dry throughout and beginner-friendly. The temperature conditions are also mild and moderate, neither going too high nor too cold, and a comfortable night's stay for the trekkers.

Both seasons have their own uniqueness and beauty, making them the most preferred time of the year. In the spring, the whole lush green valley gets beautifully covered with red rhododendrons and pines, with the crystal clear mountain views in the background, without any hindrance. The day sunlight also lasts for a longer time, allowing you enough time to explore around, without any rush.

Whereas the Autumn season is known to be the most crowded time, when the trail experiences a heavier flow of trekkers than any other time, as Nepal's major festival falls within this timeframe, attracting local and international tourists at the same time. As this season comes after the conclusion of the monsoon, the possibility of the cloud burst is zero or low, due to which the trekkers get to experience impeccable views throughout the day. The whole landscape becomes more intriguing, with brown and golden shaded landscapes, with locals engaging in agricultural harvesting at the farms.

On the other hand, the monsoon and winter seasons are known to be off-season periods because of the heavy precipitation and uncertain climatic conditions. The frequent changes of the weather situations may be too overwhelming to some who are just new to such a mountain excursion. Meanwhile, if you have some prior trekking experiences, and the time does not align with the peak span of the year, then you can choose off-seasons as well, just make sure to plan well, schedule the itinerary with extra buffer days and carry essential gears and equipment as the season demands.

Foods and Accommodations

Throughout the 12-day Manaslu Hike, you will be accommodated at the tea houses, run by the local people themselves. The lodges are on the simple and basic side, however, comfortable, and well-sanitised, which ensures a good sleepover, even at high altitudes. The rooms has it's diverse variations, from single or double-sized at lower terrains, to group sharing as high as you, that you can select as you prefer. There are only eastern-style sharing bathrooms available, so do not expect to find attached bathrooms, like in the popular Everest region. Even though the rooms are basic and remote, you will get every amenity required, like wifi, hot showers, laundry services, and charging sockets, to plug in the gadgets, by paying an extra fee.

The tea house comprises variations of meal options, featuring a menu that caters for the tastes of everyone. You can find a wide range, like western, American, continental, Asian, Nepali, and local Tibetan dishes, cooked by the mountain people. The meals are freshly cooked, soon after you order, and served at the communal dining hall. To know more about the meals and accommodations availability, you can take an overview of our recently published article.

Travel Insurance

As the Manaslu Circuit is a high-altitude trek, no matter what the total duration remains, getting travel insurance is one hundred per cent crucial. As the trail is remote and isolated, with no health posts or hospitals, if any immediate conditions occur, the only way out is the helicopter evacuation, to get you quickly to the city area. We are not saying that the trip poses any dangers, but in the Himalayas, you never know, so you must be prepared for the worst situations.

Getting insurance also saves a lot of money for the medical expenses, without much of a burden to you, even in minor cases, and also gives you ease and peace of mind. Make sure that your insurance policy covers every essential, not missing out, medical expenses, theft, trip cancellation or delays and most importantly, the evacuation up to 5500 or 6000 meters.

Trekking Permits

For this trip, lasting for 12 days, there are different permits required: Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), and Restricted Area Permit (RAP). These must be obtained through a locally based travel agency, where the permits and paperwork must be arranged by them. The permit costs go directly to the protection of the special area, boost the economy of locals, and promote sustainability. The conservation area costs remain throughout the year, whereas the special restricted permits cost changes throughout the year depending on the seasonal time.

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit costs approximately NPR 3000 (USD 28) per person
  • Manaslu Conservation Area Permit costs the same as the ACAP
  • Restricted Area Permit costs vary in different seasons; the fee from September to November costs around USD 100 (NPR 11,200) per week, and an additional USD 15 (NPR 1800) every other day. Meanwhile, the RAP for December to August is priced at USD 75 (NPR 8,100) for a week, and an additional USD 10 for every additional day.

Transportation Service

Our 12-day Manaslu Trekking cost includes extensive transportation services that will take you from Kathmandu to the starting point, Maccha Khola, and from Dharapani or Besisahar back to Kathmandu. Besides, we also offer private car airport arrival and departure services to and from your hotel on your arrival day in Nepal. Whereas, for the transit to Maccha Khola, the shared transport, either via bus or jeep, will be provided from Kathmandu, and a local jeep to transfer from  Dharapani to Besisahar and ends with a comfortable Hiace to get back to Kathmandu from Besisahar.

To make the costing more on the budget friendly side, we've included a shared transport service; however, if you want a more comfortable and cosy private jeep or car service, then you can alter it accordingly, or just go through our add-ons section and include the private 4WD jeep service to the package.

How to book the trip?

To confirm your booking, you just have to pay 20% of the total trip cost, and the rest of the amount can be paid after you arrive in Nepal, in person. You can just go through the "Book This Trip" section and make the booking through the bank transfer via the website, Western Union, or if you have already arrived in Nepal, then you can use cash, credit card or debit card as well.
