5 Days Mardi Himal Trekking Route

Our Short Mardi Himal Trip for 5 days begins with a short drive from Pokhara to Kande, then afterwards we'll start our walking trail by firstly climbing uphill through the forested trail to "Australian Camp". YES, it is quite popular to showcase the alluring view of Macchapuchre (fish tail), the mountain that will befriend us throughout the trek. Here, we can also see small camping tents set here for those who want to feel the mini mountaineering feel and get the best sunrise views over snowcapped peaks. Descending from here, we'll move toward Pitam Deurali, immersing ourselves in the tranquility of the woodland.

Before reaching the "Badal Danda", we'll pass by the Forest Camp and Low Camp. In between, do not miss out on gazing at the rare wildlife that you might encounter en route. The Annapurna region serves as a home to more than 200 species of birds, 20 rare mammals, and more than 100 other wildlife, the langur monkeys playing back and forth, the himalyan tahr hiding behind the woods, and the musk deer simply looking beautiful as it should will remind us that we are in their homeland. BIRDWATCHERS! Make the best out of the hike, as the Danfe- Nepal's national Bird shows its grace, and the Himalayan yaks grazing in the farmlands stand out to be the best moment of this Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek.

On the 3rd very day, we'll ascend to the Mardi Himal High Camp, where we can get to catch the marvelous transition of towering landscapes to snowy, frosty peaks. Along the way, the Macchapuchre, Mardi Himal, and other Annapurna massifs stand right in front of us; it feels like we can almost touch them. Attaining High Camp, we might fall in love with the charming settlement amid the mountains that offers the best enchanting snowfalls! MAYBE! our first snowfall experience and a chance to build a snowman?

After reaching the Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500 m) the next day, the best panoramic vista of the Annapurna massif with Mardi Himal and Mt. Fish Tail stretching our surroundings, makes our every step that has been left here, truly worth it! Meanwhile, if ascending to the base camp sounds too strenuous, then we can even go up to the Mardi Himal View Point (4200 meters), showing the mesmerizing vista of the Annapurna Range, including Annapurna I, South, II, III, Tukuche Peak, Hiunchuli, and even Lamjung Himal, which you probably won't regret.

Retracing our steps to Low Camp and Siding on the next day, our Mardi Himal Short Trek concludes right after we get back to Pokhara, catching a private jeep.

What makes the 5-Day Mardi Himal Trek worth it for 2026 and 2027?

Starting from Pokhara, this Mardi Himal Trek itinerary for 5 days is crafted, ensuring that one gets to explore the enchanting beauty of the Annapurna region in a short period of time with a limited budget. Even though this trip might sound rushed itinerary, it basically visits every corner of the trekking trail, just like the regular itinerary, ensuring safe ascent. The only difference is that the starting point is Pokhara, which is crafted for those who are already here in Pokhara. Here are some of the top attractions that make this short itinerary to Mardi Himal even more special to venture out for 2025 and 2026:

Breathtaking Mountain Views along the trail

The alluring views of the mountains for sure wouldn't be compromised on this trailhead, where the snowcapped Annapurna Range befriends us in every step. Starting from Kande to Forest Camp, the mountain views of Annapurna South, Fishtail, and Hiunchuli welcome us to this territory. While we move to the upper section via Low camp and Badal Danda, the close-up views of Mardi Himal and Machhapuchhre feel unreal before our eyes.

The other snowy frosty peaks of the Annapurna Range including Annapurna I, II, III, and Annapurna South with Dhaulagiri massifs of Dhaulagiri I, II, along with the other popular mountains such as Tukuche Peak (6920 m), Lamjung Himal (6934 m), Singha Chuli (6501m) and Gangapurna (7,454 m) shine under the sunrise view making our Short Mardi Trek truly an astonishing journey.

Exploring Mardi Himal: The Rising Star Captivating Hikers

The Mardi Himal (5,587m) is a pyramid-shaped mountain that bears equal beauty despite its lesser fame compared to nearby peaks. Our trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp is a close-up Himalayan mountain experience with stunning up-close views of Fishtail Mountain and the Mardi Himal panorama. The southern exposure of the mountain dominates the Modi Khola valley. Mardi Himal generates stunning panoramic vistas, so no matter what angle we look from, it's equally stunning! It wouldn't be surprising to see this peak as an emerging or a rising superstar that is recently winning the hearts of many wanderers across the globe, looking forward to trekking along the Annapurna region.

Forest camp to low camp: Witness the transition of forested land to alpine land

The best transition that we could ever witness during this Mardi Himal Short Trek would be while moving from the forest camp to the low camp. YES! Forest Camp is simply so densely covered with a verdant forest of blooming rhododendron with only a few settlements slatted by blue roofs, which tends to everyone's favourite. The amazing part is! Here lies a volleyball court and a football ground. Even though it's small, seeing kids playing laughingly shows us the fun element of the Himalayas despite the remote amenities.

Ascending higher to Low Camp, the woodland slowly transforms into high landscapes and steep ridges from where the mountain views seem like we are almost about to touch it. From the forested area to the alpine zone, the Nepalese flag fluttering in the high wind coming out of such Himalayan peaks shows us a unique insight into this five-day Mardi Himal Trail.

Mardi Himal Base Camp: Challenge yourself and get surrounded by panoramic vistas

The Mardi Himal Base Camp stands out as the highest point of our 5-day Mardi Himal Trek from Pokhara. Getting started with just 860 meters and reaching 4500 meters is surely not an easy task. It demands a high level of consistency and patience while we make our way to the base camp through the snowy trails and some steep trails; it gets quite strenuous for beginners. But you know what? After 3 hours of hiking and attaining the lap of Mardi Himal, it makes our hike 100% worth it with the 360 panorama spectacular view of highly towering mountains.

Machhapuchhre feels so close that we could reach out to touch it as it stands directly ahead of us. Its distinctive double-peak structure makes it an absolute match for its descriptive "fishtail" name. The nearby Mardi Himal peak shows its huge size, making us feel as tiny as an ant. Several peaks within the Annapurna range, including Dhaulagiri and Hiunchuli, along with their massive rocky structures, become visible too. This view can't compare to any, so let's live in the moment to appreciate it before our Mardi Himal Trekking gets over!

Badal Danda: A Cloud amidst the Himalayas

The route features Badal Danda as its enchanting destination, where we can enjoy breathtaking views of the Annapurna peaks with Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and other peaks. A forest trail through alpine meadows takes us to a cloud-covered clearing at Badal Danda. It is translated to "Cloud Hill," and as the name says, it is a hill clearing that is covered in clouds and mist all the time! Yes, clouds will dance around us, making us feel we are lost in the clouds.

Experience the Magar and Gurung Cultures and Traditions

The 5-Day Mardi Trek takes us through many Gurung and Magar villages with unique local customs. While we stay at tea houses run by locals, we can experience Nepali hospitality and local cuisine. It's also interesting to see the local Gurungs wearing their traditional attire and jewelry while doing their daily activities, and if we want, then we can surely try their attire and jewels, respecting their culture. The tea houses are simply made with wooden and slatted roofs, with a dining area with a wooden kitchen where our lovely meals are served!

Dashain, Tihar, Lhosar, and Buddha Jayanti happen throughout different seasons of the year, so we might get a chance to see how locals celebrate. And you know what? Sometimes, local teahouses give cultural performances with dance and music to display the unique cultures of the locals. So, if your time fits, then start this Mardi Himal Short Trek from Pokhara during the festive timeframe.

Early in the morning, we take a private jeep towards Kande. It is an hour-long drive which lets us see the countryside with lush hills, farms and villages. After covering about 30 km, we reach the small settlement of Kande and our trek starts as we climb uphill steadily. The route takes us through a dense rhododendron forest with beautiful views of terraced fields of millet and rice.

Soon, we reach Australian Camp, which provides stunning views of the Annapurna massif, including the famous Mt. Fishtail (Machhapuchhre). After a short break, looking over the mountains and valleys below us, we continue our hike. Passing through small villages and dense forests of oak and rhododendrons with the pleasant chirping of birds, we reach Pitam Derali in the late afternoon. It is a small settlement located on top of a ridge with simple accommodation but stunning views. We spend the rest of the day enjoying the view or visiting the holy Hindu temple and preparing for tomorrow's adventures.

Today the trail is a mix of gradual climbs and steep sections as we enter the dense forests of rhododendron and oak trees. Occasionally, we reach a clearing with provides us a glimpse of the Annapurna range and Fishtail Mountain. Walking in the cool shade of trees and leaving the main trail of Annapurna Base Camp behind, we reach Forest Camp, also known as “Kokar,” which is surrounded by lush green woods. Over 480 species of birds are found in this area, including the Danphe (National Bird of Nepal), eagles, and vultures.

After a short break, we make our way through subtropical forests with moss-covered trees and many ridges. Terraced farms of Modi Khola Valley can be seen occasionally as we approach Low Camp.  We reach “Badal Danda”  or “Cloud Hill” covered in clouds and mist almost all the time. Here we can enjoy swaying on a swing made of bamboo as we look over the Himalayas that surround us. With stunning views of a starry night sky, we rest in a local teahouse.

Today, we approach the alpine zone, leaving the subtropical forests behind. The vegetation gets sparser with shrubs, dwarf trees, and rocky terrain. The distant frost mountains and valleys begin to emerge as the rides start to fade. Moving forward, the Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre, and Annapurna ranges can become more noticeable and clearer.

The final stretch to the High Camp is steeper and a little challenging and the temperature becomes colder. Upon reaching High Camp, we are blessed with stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys below the clouds. To stay warm in the cold temperature, we sit around the fireplace in the dining area of a local teahouse.

Max Altitude: 3567 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 4-5 hoursDistance: 5km

Around 4 AM, before the rooster crows, we begin the most challenging and rewarding highlight of our trek. We pack our breakfast and make our way uphill into the steep, rough, and rocky terrain, which can be covered in snow in winter.

Once we cross 4000 meters of altitude, we can feel a significant change in altitude. Finally, after reaching the Mardi Himal Base Camp, we are welcomed with a stunning view of Annapurna South and Annapurna II and the ultimate show-stopper, Mardi Himal with Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) mountain up close. With golden sunrise and prayer flags dancing in the wind, we take a moment to appreciate the beauty around us.

We eat our packed breakfast and make a downhill return to the High Camp for lunch. Following our previous route we pass alpine meadows and enter into rhododendron and oak forests covered in moss. Moving forward with peaceful scenery and the sounds of streams in the background, we reach Low Camp after 3 hours. Since today was a long day of hiking uphill and downhill, we will take a good rest in a local teahouse.

Occasionally, we can witness the local Gurung youngsters playing “Rodhi” where they sing local folk songs.

Essential Information

Best Time for Mardi Himal Short Trek

The Mardi Himal Trekking is an all-year-round trek because of its simple trails and lower elevations that welcome beginners, families, and pro hikers. However, the Spring and autumn seasons are ideal for Mardi Himal trekking because the weather allows extended walking durations without discomfort. The hiking trail remains dry and safe because there is no precipitation, and the weather provides clear visibility.

The trek to Mardi Himal remains less preferred during winter and monsoon since snow and rain are common occurrences during these seasons. During the winter months, the trail becomes both snowy and icy, while during the monsoon season, the trails transform into a muddy mess. However, with some preparation and a planned 5-day Mardi Himal Trek, anyone can successfully do this trek in the off-season as well.

What to expect in Spring (March- May)?

The spring season stands out as one of the ideal seasons for Himalayan adventure, as during this season, it has mild temperatures (5- 15 degrees Celsius) that blend perfectly with the climate.  Walking throughout the day remains comfortable because the humidity levels do not become excessive. The path features a stunning array of rhododendron flowers in red, white, and pink, among multiple other wildflowers. As winter just ended, the air is cool, and clear skies without any clouds bring stunning, unhindered views of the Himalayas.

What to expect in Autumn (September to November)?

Autumn is another peak season for Mardi Short Trek because it brings moderate temperatures (15- 25 degrees Celsius) with long, golden, sunny hours. At lower elevations, we can witness the stunning golden crops in terraced fields ready to be harvested. Moving to higher altitudes, the mountain view becomes clearer and more beautiful with crystal clear skies. Higher altitudes reveal progressively better mountain views that become spectacular through clear, crystal skies. People celebrate the Dashain and Tihar festivals in October/ November, which allows us to experience Nepalese culture. If you are into cultures with a blend of nature, then autumn is THE season for you!

Is the Monsoon season (June to mid-August) and the winter season (December, January, and February) safe to undertake?

The seasons of monsoon and winter are considered the off-season span of the year, for the Mardi Himal Trail, or any kind of adventure, due to unpredictable weather conditions and temperature fluctuations, hiding the possible views of the mountains and landscapes as well. Considering the honest fact that this season offers a high level of snow or rainfall, due to which the terrains don't remain dry, and usually tend to be slippery and muddy, not safe to navigate through, and can be completely challenging for beginners as well. However, if you are an experienced hiker, having prior experience, then with comprehensive planning and preparation, this trip can be commenced smoothly.

To know more regarding the temperature, weather conditions, you can check our blog entitled,  Best Time for Mardi Himal Trek, which comprehensively guides you on how to be prepared for the distinct seasonal variations.

Difficulty Level of 5 Days Mardi Himal Trek

The short trek to Mardi Himal for 5 days falls under an easy moderate pace of hike in Nepal, so anyone can undertake this journey with no challenges, especially when navigated with an experienced licensed guide. Its accessibility and short duration make it favorable for beginners, families, or pro hikers. Daily walking hours between 4 and 6 span distances of 6 to 8 kilometers based on selected paths. The route is suitable for beginners, yet every trekker should prepare in advance according to their experience level.

The trail starts to get tough as we make our way from Low Camp to Base Camp due to the changing landscape, narrow ridges, and steep and rocky terrains. You need to move with caution along an exposed ridge while traveling between Forest Camp and High Camp. Our path to Mardi Himal Base Camp involves the most difficult yet fulfilling journey because we must climb steep slopes exceeding 4500 meters. The hand railing serves as your handy tool for climbing difficult slopes! hence, there's nothing to panic about, whether you can trail along smoothly, or safely or not.

Besides, the trip includes no high pass navigation, or high altitude adventure, which only involves the altitude ranging from 1300 meters up to 4000 meters, with a daily altitude gain of only 300-400 meters; however, we suggest you follow the preventive guidelines from the very beginning till the end, not rushing the pace of hike, ascending in a slow hike, and hydrate your body with 3-4 liters of water daily, and savor in only the nutritious foods, including all kind of proteins, that keeps, you persistent, throughout the journey.

Is there any possible risk of altitude sickness during this trip?

When trailing in areas above 3000 meters altitude, you might feel Acute Mountain Sickness(AMS), also known as altitude sickness. The Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4500 meters marks the highest point of the trek to Mardi Himal; however, hikers who stick to a properly developed itinerary will not experience altitude sickness.
