Tsum Valley Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek Overview

The Tsum Valley is one of Nepal’s most pristine and distinctive Himalayan valleys, tucked away in Gorkha District under the shadow of the western Himalayas. Located beneath the landscape of Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Buddha Himal range, it offers a rare opportunity to experience remote landscapes, untouched culture, and the simple way of life of its isolated mountain communities.

The journey begins from Maccha Khola, and winds off through the standard Manaslu trail, till Jagat, and takes a diversion to Lokpa, touching the official Tsum Valley route. Just initiated in 2008 AD, requiring a special restricted area permit, minimising the footprint, along the trail, a completely peaceful hike, with no crowded people, all the way. The pathway follows a lush green valley, with rhododendrons, river streams, waterfalls, and many suspension bridges, and marvellously shifts into a more Tibetan-influenced route, mani walls, chortens, small monasteries, as you go higher.

The main highlight of this trip is a sacred visit to the ancient monasteries of Mu Gompa, founded in 1985 AD, the largest and highest monastery of the valley itself, at 3700 meters. The trail continues to Ganesh Himal Base Camp, where an overnight stay at the sanctuary adds a memorable and scenic touch to the trek. On the return journey, you also have the chance to visit Milarepa Cave, Rachen Gompa, and Gumba Lungdang, making the experience even more enriching.

The Tsum Valley Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek is more than just a Himalayan walk; it is a journey into one of Nepal’s most remote, spiritual, and culturally preserved regions. From the peaceful Tsumba villages and sacred monasteries to the dramatic landscapes of Ganesh Himal and the overnight experience at base camp, this trek offers a rare balance of adventure, nature, and tradition. For trekkers seeking an off-the-beaten-path route with deep cultural meaning and unforgettable mountain scenery, this 14-day adventure is a truly exceptional choice.

Early in the morning, the trekking guide, who will assist you throughout the trip, will pick you up at the hotel where you are staying. If you choose the private jeep option, then you'll be picked up at the hotel itself. If not, then, then, the journey first of all proceeds with a quick taxi drive of 15 minutes to the bus station, and continues with a local bus drive to Maccha Khola. The driving lasts for almost 8 hours, traversing through the green hills, changing landscapes, farms, rivers, waterfalls, and small villages and towns in between. The bus stops by 2-3 resting points for coffee and lunch breaks. After approximately 6 hours, you will reach Aarughat, from where the road gets quite bumpy; however, you will take sharing jeep from here, expertly driven, so do not worry, just enjoy the countryside view. Past by Soti Khola, finally, you'll attain Maccha Khola, before 5:00 PM, enjoy the first overnight at a cozy lodge, situated just along the banks of Budhi Gandaki River.

Max Altitude: 930 m/3052 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 8 hoursDistance: 158 km

Maccha Khola stands out as the starting walking point of this trek; thus, soon after having breakfast, the hike begins towards Jagat, along the river Budhi Gandaki. The navigation persists through the green forest area, crossing several suspension bridges, some rhododendron and orchids, a green valley, cascading waterfalls, and small local settlements in between. Even though the excursion lasts for 6-7 hrs, it passes through notable villages and ridges like Khorlabesi, Tatopani, Doban, and Yaruphat, that keeps you engaged with an insight into terraced farms and locals. Jagat is a small hilly village and also an entry checkpoint of the restricted area of the Manaslu region.

Max Altitude: 1340 m/2392 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 6 hoursDistance: 21 km

The route today takes a diversion from the Manaslu Circuit standard trail and enters the route to Tsum Valley officially, alongside the Budhi Gandaki River. You will notice a less crowded and scheduled trailhead today than yesterday, with more greenery, forests, and remote traditional villages. Walking through the famous Salleri and Sirdibas villages, the trail ascends to Phillim village, where you get an opportunity to explore the Gurung communities, while having lunch here. Continuing the hike, with an uphill walk to Ekle Bhatti, via a dense forest area, you will arrive at Lokpa, a peaceful settlement of the Tsum area, giving a fully serene environment.

Max Altitude: 2242 m/7346 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 6-7 hoursDistance: 14.6 km

Leaving Lokpa behind, the hike begins towards Chumling, which only lasts for 4 hours. However, the pathway is a complete mix of steep rocky sections and rugged patterned trails. First of all, the route covers the woodland area, passing several streams and rivers of Sarli Khola and Syar Khola, through suspension bridges, along with rhododendron and pine forests. Then, the trail gets steeper, with multiple ascents and downhill walks. As you get closer to the Chumling village, the upfront view of the Ganesh Himal and Manaslu just gets closer, dominating the clear sky, just a beautiful backdrop to the charming settlement and surrounding small Tibetan monasteries.

Max Altitude: 2386 m/7830 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 4 hoursDistance: 6 km

Today is one of the easiest and flattest trails, followed by a Tibetan-influenced landmark and open landscapes, past the farms of locals. In between the walk, it gets more mesmerizing with an accompaniment of whitewashed chortens, red shrines, colorful prayer flags, mani walls, and small gompas, with a giant insight of the Ganesh Himal range. Followed by the upper tsum area villages, of Domje and Kowo, alongside the Syar River, and many cross over the suspension bridges, a final ascent takes you to Chhokangparo, with a rewarding view of Mount Ganesh Himal and Himalchuli, surrounding the village.

Max Altitude: 3031 m/9941 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5-6 hoursDistance: 13 km

The hike takes an ascent to upper terrains and higher altitudes past the rugged, steep, and a complete uphill walk; the trip is quite challenging today. After having breakfast, the journey leads off through Rachen Gompa at 3240 meters, one of the significant Buddhist landmarks, founded back in 1905 AD. You will get an opportunity to witness prayers, meditation retreats, and experience spiritual serenity here. Afterwards, you will come across the Nile village, the last permanent village in the upper Tsum Valley, with only traditional remote houses and large yak herds, all the way long. Walking a bit further, finally, you'll reach Mu Gompa, the largest monastery of the region, one of the major highlights of the trip.

Max Altitude: 3700 m/12142 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 6-7 hoursDistance: 15 km

After passing through the settlements of Chhule, Phurba, and Pangdun on the eastern bank of the Shiar Khola, the trail gradually leads you to Burgi Village (3,245m). This quiet mountain village offers a glimpse of traditional Tsumba life, with dramatic valley views and a peaceful atmosphere that reflects the remoteness of the region. If time and weather conditions allow, then, you can take a side trip to Milarepa’s Cave can be added, which takes about two extra hours and adds both cultural and spiritual value to the journey. From Burgi, the route then proceeds on a downhill walk through scenic green hills and terraced landscapes to Chhokang Paro.

Max Altitude: 3031 m/9941 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5 hoursDistance: 13 km

The trail is more strenuous today than the previous days, as it takes you through steep sections and isolated sections of the Tsum valley, towards the peaceful nunnery at Gumba Lungdang at 3200 meters. As you go higher, the prominent view of the Ganesh Himal range gets closer and more upfront, perched high in the crystal-clear sky, with a scenic backdrop of the Tibetan-influenced valley. Overnight stay at Gumba Lungdeng.

Max Altitude: 3200 m/10439 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 6 hoursDistance: 14 km

After having a quick breakfast, the trail winds off to the Ganesh Himal Base Camp perched at an altitude of 4200 meters, passing along the Torogumla glacier and small monasteries in between. Reaching the base camp, you will be surrounded by the expansive view of the Ganesh Himal range, with four main peaks, above 7000 meters, along the high alpine glaciers, including Kalo Seto Kunda. If the weather is in your favour, you will also get an opportunity to glimpse the Langtang and Mt. Manaslu massifs, covered in snow.

You have two options for this part of the trek: either return to Gumba Lungdang for an overnight stay or continue to the base camp and spend the night in a tent. Since there are no lodges in the area, this decision should be made while finalizing the itinerary so we can arrange the tented camp in advance. The choice depends on your preference and trekking plan.

Max Altitude: 4,200 m/13782 ft Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5 hoursDistance: 10 km

The trail meanders through the lush green forest area, past river streams, waterfalls, and small local villages, along the local villages of Domje and Rimpchet as well. Finally, after 6 hrs of downhill walking, you will eventually reach Lokpa perched at 2242 meters.

Max Altitude: 2242 km Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 2 hoursDistance: 15 km

Continuing the hike, you will again face the downhill trailhead, through forests and several villages in between, and reach Jagat, the destination for today.

Leaving Jagat behind, the trail continues toward Dovan, followed by the roaring Budhi Gandaki River, traversing through the forested pathway, and a natural hot spring of Dovan, a time to relax, before heading to Maccha Khola.

Essential Information

Best Time

The ideal seasons for the Tsum Valley with Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek stand out to be Spring, starting from March to May, and Autumn (September to mid-November). Just like any other season, trekking during this timeframe, these peak seasons offer clear mountain views and stable weather conditions, which make the trail more comfortable and scenically beautiful. The chances of precipitation are also on the lower side, so hikers can expect a dry terrain to walk through, without having to worry about icy or muddy trails.

During Spring, the whole forest area gets stunningly colored in different shades, red rhododendrons, white orchids, and the backdrop of gigantic peaks. As it comes after the conclusion of winter, the air gets fresher, and the pathway gets clearer, the snow all washed off, perfect for a trail along. The day sunlight also lasts for a longer time, which gives enough time to cover the long-distance hikes at a gradual pace, without a rush.

Whereas the autumn is known as the festive time, where the major festivals, Dashain and Tihar, fall in between, enriching the journey with rich cultural celebrations. In both seasons, the temperature is mild and chill, ranging between 14 and 18 degrees Celsius, and cosy nights not dropping below -5 degrees Celsius, even at high altitudes.

Meanwhile, the winter and monsoon are considered off-season for any himalayan adventure, and the same goes for this excursion as well. The unexpected climate situations and the hassle of finding accommodations influence the overall trip, especially when you are unprepared or beginners having no prior trekking experience.  However, due to the smaller number of visitors, the trip can be rewarding for experienced trekkers, with a thrill of challenges that make the trek memorable and safe with proper planning.

Tsum Valley Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek Difficulty

The Tsum Valley Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek falls under the category of a moderate to challenging adventure in Nepal, due to the scheduled and remote sections, long hiking duration, and massive altitude gain. Daily, the hike demands 5-6 hours of walking through diverse kinds of terrain. The first half of the trail is easy, but as you go higher, the pathway changes into rugged, steep, and rocky sections, with continuous uphill and downhill walking. The route doesn't include any technical sections, nor does it require prior experience; however, you must be physically fit and mentally prepared to handle basic trekking conditions in such an isolated region.

One of the major challenges of this trek is the limited infrastructure, where even basic facilities, like luxuries, are lacking, unlike commercialized routes, like ABC or EBC. This means you need to adjust to the simple accommodations and do not seek any premium lodges en route, which might be mentally tough for complete newcomers. Besides, the route takes an ascent to the higher altitudes each day and reaches maximum elevation at 4200 meters, Ganesh Himal Base Camp itself, which adds another layer of difficulty, making acclimatization crucial and proper preparedness compulsory. For this reason, this trek suits the hikers who have some hiking experience, short or long, or even the fit beginners, who are trained in advance and plan the pace personally, guided by an expert team.

Altitude Sickness

Any himalayan odyssey above 2500 meters possesses the risk of altitude sickness, and this Tsum Valley with Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek stands no different. The higher you go, each day that passes by takes you to thinner air and a lower oxygen level, posing the possibility of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), if preventive guidelines are not considered beforehand. Symptoms such as headaches, loss of sleep, appetite, and shortness of breath are quite common; however, if you feel a loss of control, dizziness, blood vomiting, or skin turning pale, then things might be severe. In such cases, inform the trekking guide immediately, and follow his immediate guidelines.

The risk of AMS is still low, as our 14-day itinerary is gradually paced, allowing your body to adapt to the rising elevation. Throughout the trek, the guide will assist you and ensure your body is doing well by monitoring symptoms. On the other hand, it also depends on you whether you take preventive measures seriously, such as staying well hydrated, fueling your body with healthy, nutritious meals, and avoiding smoking and alcohol. Stick along with the trekking guide, and get monitored through an oximeter, with the help of the guide. Followed with a gradual pace itinerary and consideration of safety guidelines, there are no dangers.

Foods and Accommodations during the trek

The Tsum Valley and Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trekking is a tea house-based hike, where you will be accommodated at the lodges run by the local people themselves. The rooms are basic and simple, yet well-maintained and hygienically sanitised, which keeps the trekkers comfortable. The washrooms are on the eastern style, and sharing basis, no private bathrooms are available. You will find different variations from twin to group sharing basis, single bedroom availability, which can be difficult, at the higher elevations, but a private room will be arranged for a single trekker.

Even though the rooms are on the remote side, every essential, like wifi, charging access, hot showers, and laundries, is available, with extra fare. The dining area has a heating burning stove, which keeps you warm in the evening, so try having dinner at the communal dining hall, and stay there before sleeping. Do not expect any luxuries, just try to enjoy the perks of the himalayan lifestyle and their way of living, and the same goes for the accommodations as well.

The meals consist of a wide range of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, catering to the taste palette of everyone. From Western, to American, to Continental, to asian, in terms of food options, you will find every kind. In terms of variety, no matter whether you are a vegetarian, vegan, or non-vegeterian, every kind is available. You just have to go through the menu and order the food as you prefer. Drinking water is available at every tea house, but make sure to boil it or use a water purification tablet.

Permits for the Tsum Valley with Ganesh Himal Base Camp Trek

As the Tsum Valley falls under the restricted area of the Manaslu region, one must obtain the restricted area permit, following the specific rules and requirements. Alongside the other two permits is the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit and the TIMS Card (Trekkers Information Management System Card).

  • TIMS Card: The TIMS Card helps ensure trekker safety by recording important details such as entry and exit information, trek duration, and any unexpected situations along the route. It also serves as a useful reference in case of an emergency evacuation is needed. The permit costs approximately NPR 2,000 (USD 18) per person and is a mandatory requirement for registration.
  • Restricted Area Permit: As it lies under the restricted zone, this is the most essential permit to attain, and the most expensive one. This permit cannot be obtained independently and can only be obtained through a local travel agency, affiliated with TAAN and NMA. Since 2026, solo private hiking has been allowed on this trail, cutting off the former regulation of 2 trekkers in a group; solo hiking is allowed. The permit cost is approx. USD 40 per head for the first week, and an additional cost of USD 7 (NPR 900) per person every other day, during the autumn season. For the other 3 seasons, USD 30 (NPR 3500) per head, for the first week, an additional fee is charged for any extra days along the restricted area.
  • Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP): It costs approx USD 28 (NPR 3000) per head, where the fare goes directly to the preservation and boosts the sustainability of wildlife and local communities.

After the booking is confirmed, the permits will be arranged by us, at Destination Himalaya Treks, and included in our package itself.

Travel Insurance

As it is a high-altitude trek that reaches an altitude of above 4000 m, getting travel insurance is highly recommended. The trail does not have any health posts, hospitals, or any quick medical access; the only way out, if any emergency occurs, is by helicopter evacuation. Make sure that the policy covers every requirement, like medical expenses, theft, trip cancellation, and delays, and most importantly, the heli chatter, upto 5000 meters.

Booking Procedure

To confirm your booking, you need to pay 20% of the total trip cost, which can be completed securely through our website using a debit card or credit card. The remaining balance can be paid upon your arrival in Kathmandu, Nepal. Your booking is completely safe with us. Once the reservation is confirmed, we will send you a confirmation message via email or WhatsApp to let you know that your trek is secured.
