Trip PlanExpand all

Today, the guide will come to pick you up at the hotel in the early morning to catch a luxury tourist bus in Balaju Bus Park, which is just minutes away from the hotel.  After taking the bus, we moved towards the outskirts of the capital, driving away from Kathmandu Valley. We will slowly notice the busy urban view transforming into serene open countryside. Traveling on the Prithvi Highway, we can enjoy the middle hill beauty alongside the Trisuli River while we observe rural villages, terraced fields, and green hills as we cross Dhading, Chitwan, and Tanahun.

We reach Pokhara mid-afternoon. Our hotel accommodations present spectacular mountain vistas of Phewa Lake and Machapuchare (fishtail) Peak, along with its neighboring peaks. We have free time during the entire day to spend as we wish and also shop for essential gear, and souvenirs while appreciating Nepali handmade items or spending some time at one of the lakeside restaurants. Today is an excellent opportunity to relax right before starting our trek.

Max Altitude: 830 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: 4 Star HotelDuration: 6-7 hours

We start our day by eating breakfast early while looking at Phewa Lake before riding to Hile to begin our trek. Our journey passes through Nayapul, thus leading us to the checkpoint at Birethani by the Modi Khola River. After reaching Hile, our trek starts towards Ulleri by crossing an old suspension bridge decorated with prayer flags.

Later, we walk through subtropical forests followed by terraced fields of rice and millet, with vibrant local vegetables. We reach Sonari after 4-5 hours of walking then stop for lunch in Tikhedhunga at a teahouse. We move towards the 3,300 stone steps rising 1000 meters high that lead to Ulleri, representing the hardest section of our day's trek.

Ulleri stands as a mountain village that offers breathtaking panoramas of Annapurna South alongside Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre. This traditional settlement of Magar people is just the spot to end our long da of travel and hike.

Max Altitude: 2.,070 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 8-9 hours

After breakfast, we will begin our morning journey to Banthani. The journey takes us through forested regions containing combinations of rhododendron, pine, oak, and bamboo trees before reaching Banthanti, followed by Nangethani, where we will take a brief rest after walking along the Bhurungdi River. The route presents spectacular views of Hiunchuli and Annapurna South mountains while the changing vegetation becomes more noticeable alongside rising altitude. The trail moves through forested areas where rhododendron and oak trees thrive, while spring brings red and pink, and white rhododendrons and different wildflowers to the scene.

More mountain vistas appear while we approach Ghorepani and the hills become steeper before reaching this beautiful village. The path reveals additional mountain views leading to Ghorepani as the elevation rises steeply to reach this enchanting village. Historically, Ghorepani served as a horse-stopping place on trade routes between Nepal and Tibet, resulting in the local name of "Horse Water." From here we see the incredible panorama of the Annapurna ranges while the peak of Machhapuchhre, Dhaulagiri, and Hiunchuli stand out on the horizon. Traditional stone houses in Ghorepani are decorated with dancing prayer flags that demonstrate Magar and Gurung local heritage.

Max Altitude: 2,880 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5-6 hours

Right at dawn, we will cover 1.5km and take an hour-long hike to Poon Hill which is a captivating highlight of this trek because we get to see the most stunning wide-angle view of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges that includes the picturesque snow peaks Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Annapurna III, Tukuche Peak, Nilgiri South, Himchuli, Lamjung Himal, Mardi Himal, Dhampus Peak, Tilicho Peak totaling 19 prominent mountains. After taking our time to appreciate this stunning view, we make our way back to Ghorepani village where we’ll have our breakfast and proceed on our further journey.

We navigate through Deurali Pass and Banthanti, passing beautiful terraced farms, bamboo forests, streams,  thick forests of rhododendrons and oak trees, before the route ascends uphill after we pass through cane fields to reach the Bhurungdi River.  After 30 minutes of steep hiking and enjoying the scenic view on the trail, we will reach Tadapani, meaning "Far Water", a peaceful Gurung village. With rich cultural heritage and stunning mountain views, we can enjoy a spiritual time in these villages.

Max Altitude: 3,210 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 6 hours

Our trek from Tadapani to Ghandruk starts after breakfast as we descend through forested slopes of rhododendrons and oak where Himalayan honeybees dwell and birds sing. Sheep and goat herders greet us while we watch the Modi Khola Valley and Annapurna range until we reach our destination. We arrive at Ghandruk village after 2-3 hours, where many recognize it as the biggest Gurung settlement because of its important cultural elements and Gurkha regiments' connections.

Ghandruk features stone paths and slate-housed buildings that showcase intricate wooden window carvings. Our stop at the local museum lets us explore Gurung's cultural items such as household tools, clothing, and decorative jewelry. The women of the community use wooden looms during their work, and the elderly members take their leisure time in the sun. We can also try the cultural Gurung attire, which is a one-of-a-kind experience.

Handicraft shops with unique aouvinieres and German bakeries are the village foundations established by Gurkha soldiers returning home. We conclude our trek today by spending our last night in a teahouse that offers breathtaking views of Annapurna South and Hiunchuli while potentially watching a traditional Gurung dance performance.

Max Altitude: 1,942 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5-6 hours

Our last trekking day begins with breakfast and then we descend from Ghandruk towards Syauli. As we follow the path, we encounter mustard millet and barley terraced fields, which provide a serene tour of rural activities. During our journey we see farmers using oxen for plowing while women bear large baskets on their heads as children walk behind herds of cows. Banana trees and bamboo groves replace dense rhododendron and oak forest as we continue toward the subtropical region. Upon reaching Syauli Bazaar, we take a local jeep to drive back to Pokhara.

The journey to Pokhara lets us enjoy traditional rural scenery despite the rough roads with the views of rural villages and agricultural farms along the Modi Khola Valley. After reaching Pokhara, we finish our day with a perfect view as Phewa Lake shows the snow-capped mountains mirrored on its surface during sunset. We can enjoy the lakeside view and rest in our hotel for the next day's departure to Kathmandu.

Max Altitude: 1,175 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea house

Essential Information

Best Time for Poon Hill Trekking

The ideal seasons for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek stand out to be Spring, starting from March to May, and Autumn (September to November) due to the idyllic and stable weather conditions, and unhindered mountain and landscape views. During this span of the year, you can expect fewer hazards, as the climate does not fluctuate rapidly and stays consistent, contributing to a smooth terrain to trail along the trailhead, without any challenging sections. The possible chances of precipitation are minimal, as both the seasons come after the conclusion of high rainfall and snowfall time, winter and monsoon, ensuring a dry route to navigate, with no muddy, slippery, or icy sections.

During Spring, the route is beautifully adorned with the red rhododendron forest, lush green valleys, with a crystal clear vista of the Himalayan giants, in the backdrop, creating a picturesque surroundings. Besides, the day sunlight hour also lasts for a longer time, where the trekkers get to explore more out of the region, without speeding up the pace, worrying about an early darkness or gloominess, or heavy winds. The temperature ranges between 5 °C and 14 °C during the day, and drops to 0 to 5 °C, ensuring an enjoyable hike, without any physically draining heat, and cosy nights, as well, making it one of the best times to venture on this trail.

On the other hand, the season of Autumn experiences a high number of trekkers along the route, as it arrives after the conclusion of the monsoon, which has almost zero chance of rainfall or snowfall, making it an ideal time to pass through the Himalayan terrains. The major festivals of Nepal, Dashain and Tihar, also fall between September and November, which captivates the domestic trekkers as well, due to holiday time, allowing you to connect and interact with other Nepalese hikers, at the same time. It tends to a perfect span of the year, who seek more cultural exploration, and fall season, side effects, like, brown green forested area, roaring cascading waterfalls, and dry with smooth trailheads.

Poon Hill Trek Difficulty Level

The Annapurna Poon Hill hike is considered one of the shortest and easiest going adventures in the Himalayas, which can be easily done by any kind of trekkers, from beginners to families to senior citizens. Unlike any other remote or circuit treks, you do not have to spend weeks to weeks, on the Himalayan trailhead; it's just 3-4 days along the route, that too, through a well-maintained pathway and standard lodges, thus, it is more like a chill cultural and sunrise hike. Due to no remote isolation and basic yet comfortable tea houses, there is no mental toughness frustration, which highly contributes to the trip as an easy-going.

Daily, this trip covers 5 to 6 hours only, with multiple ascends and descents sections; however, the route does not include any technical pathway, rugged or rocky patterned trail that even first timers can smoothly undertake. The only challenging trail, where one might feel leg trembling, is the uphill walk of Ulleri 3000 stone staircase, which demands a continuous ascent; other than that, if you have a basic level of fitness, then you are good to go.

Meanwhile, there is a major thing to consider, which is the risk of altitude sickness, as it takes you above 2000 meters, reaching the highest at 3120 meters, which might cause mild symptoms of AMS, but can be avoided if proper preventive guidelines are followed. Just do not speed up your pace, and navigate along the trekking guide, and be aware of the symptoms, like nausea, dizziness, shortness of breath, and continuous headaches; if any occur, inform the guide immediately.

Just to ensure a gradual pace and minimal elevation gain, this 7-day Poon Hill Trekking itinerary is customised with a gradual ascent of 300-400 meters, letting your body adapt to the elevation gain, and minimising the risk of altitude sickness. Also, our guides are highly experienced, being medically trained and equipped, hence, in case of any emergency, they become your quick emergency medical responder. Just be physically prepared to cover the daily pace of the hike; other factors won't have any issue, as it is a moderate adventure that fits in any trekker's pace, experience, and fitness.

Altitude Sickness: Recognition and Prevention

No matter how experienced, novice or what age you are, the risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is always there when you are undertaking the himalayan odyssey above 3000 meters. As you go higher, the air gets thinner, and the oxygen level drops. As the trip officially starts from either Kathmandu (1360 m) or Pokhara (830 m), the highest elevation you will reach is 3210 meters, with the elevation difference of almost 2000 meters; thus, the possibility of AMS is there. Throughout, you should always look after how your body is coping up, and to know that, be aware of the possible altitude sickness, such as headaches (mild or severe ones), nausea, vomiting, dizziness, skin turning pale or grey, or loss of sleep and appetite, if such happens then, inform the guide, and take the suggestive precautions, and medical assistance from the guide.

Meanwhile, there are some preventive guidelines that you must consider before and throughout the journey to Poon Hill:

  • Ensure to be well-hydrated, with 3-4 litres of water every day, and fuel your body with nutritious meals that include protein, carbs, fibres, and enough to keep you energised, for a 4-5 hour day hike.
  • If possible, do not drink alcoholic beverages or smoke caffeine, keep your body clear, and instead, have ginger garlic soups, which keep you warm and protect you from cold exposure.
  • Take a gentle hike, ascending 300-500 meters each day, do not rush, and stick to the planned itinerary and navigate along with the trekking guide throughout.
  • Be alert to the symptoms, and check your pulse rate via oximeter at each key stopping points.

Accommodations

This Poon Hill Trail is a full tea house, yet standard lodging basis odyssey, where you will be accommodated at the home stays (tea houses), run by the locals themselves. The accommodations are more on the simple side; however, the trail is considered a well-facilitated route within the Annapurna region, with all the required facilities, that caters to the needs of every hiker. At the lower terrains, the lodges are more standard, with attached washrooms, charging points, but, as you ascend higher, only rooms with shared bathrooms are available, due to limited accessibility.

The rooms are on a twin-sharing basis, where you might have to share with your group at times. Meanwhile, if you are trekking solo, privately, or want a single bedroom, then we can arrange it as well. Just inform us beforehand. Other amenities, like wifi, laundry facilities, hot showers, and charging devices/gadgets, are available throughout the route, paying extra fare, at the higher elevation, where the wifi and electric points are only available at the dining area. The rooms are hygienically maintained by the locals and well-sanitised throughout the trekking trail, where you do not have to compromise on essentials, hygiene, and comfort.

Foods

Throughout the trek to Ghorepani, you will find a wide variety of meal options, from western, American, continental, to Chinese, indian, Tibetan, and local cuisines that cater to the taste palette of every individual. From vegan, to veg, to non-veg options, the menu options are quite broad; it's just that you have to inform if your preferences while ordering the food, such as allergic foods, certain demands on the ingredients, or cooking methods, and it will be served accordingly. Our package inclusively includes standard meals, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, you can choose the meals from the menu as you prefer.

Meals along the route are hearty and filling. Pancakes, Tibetan bread, oatmeal, porridge, chapati (roti) served with curries, soups, muesli, and many more dishes are available for breakfast, along with coffee, tea, and even hot chocolate. Food is even more delicious during lunch and dinner. Spaghetti, momo, sandwiches, spring rolls, noodles, French fries, and traditional local dishes are all included in these varied menu areas. The stable food is Dal Bhat, which is served with lentil soup, hot water of lemon or ginger, tomato pickles, spinach, and green veggies, and it can be refilled at no extra charge!

The drinking water facilities are available in every tea house; ensure to use the water purification tablets, to avoid an allergic reaction, which might happen as your body might not be used to the Himalayan fresh water.

Internet, Network & Charging Accessibility

Every lodge/tea house has the essential amenities, such as internet, Wi-Fi access, and charging sockets, which will be provided to you, with an extra charge. As the electricity is limited, the access is limited as well, where you can connect it, at the communal dining area, only. Upto Ghorepani village, you might find the charging sockets in the room itself, but they cannot be found at the higher altitude. Sometimes, at the charging station, especially during peak seasons, it remains highly crowded, delaying your turn just to get gadgets charged, so it is better if you bring a powerbank, if possible, two of them, for emergency use. For the network, take an NTC and NCELL SIM Card with you, which can be purchased at Kathmandu or Pokhara, that works fine at lower trails, and may fluctuate above 3000 meters, but easily get connected for quick phone calls or communication.

Transportation Facilities

To reach the Poon Hill Trekking route, if it starts from Kathmandu, you will initially go for either a standard luxury tourist bus drive or a direct flight to Pokhara of 25 minutes, if you are short on time or do not feel comfortable travelling via bus. Or else, you can also choose a drive via private car or a jeep to reach PKR (Pokhara). Then, from Pokhara, it takes a drive on the road by sharing a jeep for 2-3 hours to reach Nayapul or Hile, the starting hiking point of this expedition. These are the most comfortable and chosen option, by the travellers, considering the estimated budget, and also making sure that you get to mingle on the driveway, enjoying the Trishuli River with other rivers and landscapes en route, bypassing the Prithvi Highway, immersing in the distinct insight of the land of the Himalayas - Nepal.

However, if you are willing to upgrade your package, with premium transportation, then you can easily customise it, adding airport and private jeep transportation to reach Pokhara and the starting hiking trail.

Trek Duration and Pricing Option for 2026

The starting and ending points of the standard Ghorepani Trek depend on how your itinerary is crafted, and the total duration varies accordingly. For instance, many hikers usually prefer to begin and end at Kathmandu, where the package includes arrival and departure dates. However, for those, who are already in Pokhara, can start the trip, from here, that way, the cost becomes lesser and more on the budget friendly side. As our itinerary includes a full 1 week of the trip, from Kathmandu, here are some of the options for the trekkers, with shorter duration and less cost, for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek in 2026, based on the duration:

  • 2 Days Poon Hill Trek is USD 299 per head, where the starting point is Ulleri via jeep drive from Pokhara, and the hike leads to Ghorepani village, on the first day, and the second day, you will ascend to Poonhill, and take a downhill walk to Tikhledhunga and ends with a jeep drive back to Pokhara.

Challenges and Preparation Guide for Beginners

The trek to Ghorepani and Poon Hill is a beginner-friendly adventure that can be seamlessly completed by novice hikers, as the trail is well-marked, easy-going, and filled with many hikers all along the route. However, there are still some challenges/hazard situations that the first-timers are not aware of, like changing weather, climatic conditions, intense altitude gain, diverse kinds of terrains that transform every second, and limited amenities, which might be physically and mentally stressful to first-time trekkers. Here are some challenges that beginners encounter along the way, and useful tips to tackle or prevent them:

  • Terrain: The Poon Hill Trail basically traverses via a gentle trailhead; however, there are many uphill and downhill walks and steep climb sections, which can be tough for a newbie. But, unlike other Annapurna treks, it does not feature any rough, rugged and glacier sections. Just with a basic level of fitness or some physical preparedness, such as cardiovascular exercises or strength workouts beforehand, for 1-2 weeks, you are good to go.
  • Remote: The route covers almost 70% of the forest navigation, passing via unmarked parts of the trek at some point and confusing trails, where independent hikers, that too with no experience, might be in danger, like losing track, heading to landslide-prone areas, or completely isolated parts, mistakenly diverging from the route. But, if you are trekking with a licensed experienced guide, which will be provided by us, then, there is nothing to worry about, just walk along with him throughout.
  • Altitude: The trip to Ghorepani begins at an altitude of 1320 meters, at Kathmandu or Pokhara (830 m), depending on the itinerary, however, it it reaches the highest at 3210 meters, with a daily increasing elevation, and thinning air, which might be too much to handle for beginners, leading to the risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness). At the same time, the frequent weather changes and massive drop in temperature might impact breathing and cause intense headaches if preventive safety guidelines are not taken seriously. So, ensure to hydrate your body well enough, 4-5 L, avoid smoking or drinking alcohol, consume nutritious meals, and if you feel any discomfort, inform the guide immediately.

Travel Tips for Poon Hill Hike

  1. Make sure that your backpack only contains the required items to remain lightweight. Pack only essential items like clothes, medicine, sleeping bags, and covers; it will help you to continue the ascent smoothly.
  2. Please remember to drink water continuously throughout your trek to prevent dehydration. You should bring a reusable water bottle with a 2-3 litre capacity and refill it in teahouses.
  3. On a sunrise view day, you need to begin your Poon Hill hike around 4 AM if you do not want to miss out on the sunrise over the mountains. The vantage point might be quite crowded during peak seasons, so reaching up there quickly helps you to get a front-row seat to get the best mountain views.
  4. During your journey between villages, maintain respect for both the customs and traditions of the local inhabitants. Begin each interaction with locals by giving them a friendly wave and obtaining consent before snapping a photo. Your community interaction deepens your journey while building positive relations with residents.
  5. The trek will be easier when you pack energy-packed meals such as nuts, combined with energy bars and dried fruits. So, make sure to put on some quick snacks to munch on along the trail, as at some points there are no signs of tea houses along the trail.
  6. It is highly suggested to carry power banks, at least 2 of them, as along the trail, there is less possibility of getting rooms with attached electric sockets at the upper trails. Hence, for that, you must head up to the dining area and recharge the gadgets while waiting in the queue.
  7. Even though every tea house has Wi Fi connectivity, you might require data connectivity to keep updated back home, so, for that, please buy an NTC SIM Card here in Kathmandu that costs around NRS 50/-, and you can simply just buy 1 1-week datapack and use it for 7 days with an NRS 110 datapack.
  8. Estimate the personal expenses, such as spending on laundry, showering, buying souvenirs, tipping the guide and carrying Nepali rupees (NRS) if possible. Even though our package covers all your meals, accommodations, entry fees, permits, and everything. You might require some cash along the trail. Also, note that credit facilities aren't available except in Pokhara, so do the money exchange in Kathmandu or Pokhara beforehand.
