What Makes the 13-Day Manaslu Trekking Unique and Intriguing?

The Manaslu region is a distinct destination that leads to discovering a whole new world far from modernisation. According to trekking professionals and clients, the trek truly stands out as the preferred trekking trail in Nepal as it passes through the long, deepest gorge- Budhi Gandaki- and crosses some of the thrilling suspension bridges. Here are the detailed major attractions that we will encounter while commencing the journey to the Manaslu Circuit:

Crossing Larkya La Pass (5106 meters): A sense of achievement

Want to feel the joy of milestone achievement? Well, here it is - the enchanting Larke Pass. The journey to this daring Larkya La Pass is not just about the destination but a magical journey to the top. Although the voyage to Larkya La Pass sounds quite strenuous and challenging due to the high altitude, the marvellous, slow transition from lush, dense forests and semi-arid desert landscapes to snowy alpine valleys unveils the diversity of the majestic Himalayas, making it a rewarding gift for our long, strenuous hike during the Manaslu Circuit Budget Trekking.

While we may perceive this as the end of this heavenly beauty. The vantage point of Larkya La, where the glorious peaks such as Mt. Manaslu, Samdo Peak, Larke Peak, Cheo Himal, and Himlung are aligned to welcome us, is truly breathtaking. On top of that, several glaciers, such as Larke and Manaslu, melt slowly under the golden sunlight, while the fresh air coming straight from the mountains provides a heavenly moment that makes our 13-day trek to Manaslu truly a noteworthy adventure.

Experience the Ancient culture of the Tibetan communities

While we may think that the trek to Manaslu Circuit 13 Days is all about the eye-captivating beauty of the diverse landscapes and snowy mountains. Moving to the upper region, close to the Tibet border. The rich tapestry culture of highly Buddhist-influenced Tibetan locals of Manaslu, such as the Nubri and Tsum ethnic groups, amazes us with their ancient lifestyle. Even in this modern period, they are following the same ancient livelihood passed from generation to generation.

On top of that, while navigating through the trail, we can see Tibetan children waving us hello from their charming small villages, providing a comforting relief to our tiring hike. If your trip collides with their festive season. Don’t miss out on experiencing their famous festivals like Sonam Lhosar, Gyalpo Loshar and treat yourself with their rich livelihood.

Get Befriended by Several Himalayan Peaks and Distinct Landscapes

Right from the beginning, the Soti Khola and Budi Gandaki Rivers accompany us. As one navigates through the lush green hills and reaches the lap of the Himalayas, the landscapes dotted with traditional villages along the backdrop views of Ganesh Himal and Mount Manaslu rising high just under the golden hues of sunrays can be seen. Throughout the trek, several snowcapped peaks like the Sringi Himal, Himalchuli, and Peak 29 tend to accompany us, making our trail scenically beautiful.

Pilgrimage visit to the Ancient monasteries

Apart from a diverse cultural mosaic and attractive views, this 13-day Manaslu Trek has more to offer. It is believed that this trek to the Manaslu is incomplete if we don't pay a visit to the Buddhist monasteries that are situated in the middle of stunning landscapes and valleys. Syangen Gompa, Lho Gompa, Sama Gompa, and not to forget the Pungen Gompa stand out as the major exploration that we'll do during this trek. Nestled at an altitude above 3000 meters, these monasteries are dotted with stunning landscapes and alpine valleys.

These ancient gompas are engraved with detailed Thangka paintings (Buddhist architecture), deities statues from decades, surroundings with prayer flags flagging in the windy air, and prayers of monks whistling out in the area, transporting us back to an ancient era far away from this modern world.

Celebrate the Boisterous Festivals with locals

The Manaslu region itself, being located in the Gorkha district, where ethnic groups of communities thrive, and has a strong influence of the Tibetan Bon religion, presents an opportunity for you to delve into their festivals and celebrations, connecting you more with the nature and locals as well. If your itinerary collides with the Buddhist festivals, such as Buddha Jayanti (Tibetan New Year), Lhosar, Dhachyang, and even the Tiji festival, which is also celebrated in the upper Mustang region.

The festival of Lhosar falls in the springtime, which is also considered the peak season, when the monasteries host the ceremonies, such as dances, music performances, and prayers, and locals gather together, and cook local delicacies, it's like a Western culture Thanksgiving, where families gather across the places. You can also participate in their festival by visiting monasteries, which this trip does, and offering prayers with monks, together, and getting blessed by lamas, and also, try cooking the local meals with locals, enhancing the experience.

Whereas, at the lower regions, where the distinct communities thrive, together, their unity becomes more prominent to you when the Hindus celebrate their major festivals of Dashain and Tihar, Maghi Sankranti, Janai Purnima, Holi, Teej, and many others, sharing their culture with Tibetan locals. The main festive season, Dashain-Tihar, falls under Autumn, which is celebrated for 5 to 13 days, so it's your time to thrive in the boisterous festive season of the Himalayas, which showcases unity, peace and the preservation of the ancient culture of locals to date.

Ideal Seasons for 13 Days Manaslu Circuit Trek

Spring and Autumn are the ideal seasons for this incredible budget trek to the Manaslu Circuit. The weather is incredibly stable with clear views of mountains without negotiating the captivating nature that this trek has to offer. Meanwhile, it is highly recommended not to trek to the Manaslu region in the summer (monsoon) and winter due to the unfavourable weather conditions, making the trail extremely challenging and slippery, and also, there is always a high risk of landslides going around these two seasons.

What to expect in Spring (March to May)?

The spring season is always definitely the ideal time for hiking and climbing, and for this Manaslu Circuit Budget Trekking, it is no different. The temperature is cool in the morning and warmer in the afternoon and evening, making it one of the most preferred treks among trekkers. Due to the appropriate weather, adventurers can plan this trek without worrying much about high humidity and heavy rainfall.

On top of that, this season always brings out the best with its captivating views of wildflowers such as red rhododendrons and anemone polyanthus blooming, making the landscape filled with vibrant tones of colour against the brown and dry shades. Not to forget, the trails are less crowded than in Autumn. So, it is undoubtedly the best season for enthusiastic trekkers who want to explore unspoiled nature peacefully.

What to expect in Autumn (September to November)?

Autumn is supposedly the peak season for the Manaslu Circuit Trekking Tour. As this season falls just after the monsoon, it offers perfect stable weather with crystal clear skies, greenery, and fresh alpine air, offering a clear and close visibility of snowy peaks. Trekking in this ideal time is a meaningful experience as the major festivals of Nepal, Dashain and Tihar, fall right between October and November. While staying at the lodges/teahouses along the route, you can have a lively experience of these two festivals along the eye-appealing views of natural surroundings.

What to expect in Winter (December to February)?

The winter season can be challenging, especially when you are reaching such an altitude of 5106 meters, the highest point of the Manaslu Budget Circuit Trek. Ascending in such cold temperatures can be hazardous with a heavy risk of altitude sickness as the temperature falls below 0 to -10 degrees Celsius in higher elevations. Besides that, due to the heavy snowfalls, the trails can be slippery and muddy, making it impossible to trek. Also, don't forget! Many routes are closed during the wintertime time including the main point of this trek, Larkya La Pass. Nonetheless, the voyage can still be commenced with proper planning and the right trekking gear. The glimpse of landscapes dotted with snow and mountainous scenic views overshadows the hazardous trails.

What to expect in Monsoon (June to August)?

Summer (Monsoon) falls under the rainy season in Nepal, so heavy continuous rainfall is quite expected during this time. Due to this, the trails are slippery, along with the heavy snowy terrains, causing an adverse situation for hiking. This trek to the Manaslu circuit for 13 days includes some forest and riverside trails as well in the beginning section. So, the leeches and bugs are everywhere along this route, which can be a little irritating if you are a novice trekker. Also, the views of the mountains are covered with cloudy fog, and due to the heavy snowfall at this time, this trek can be delayed, causing it to take more days for this trip.

Meals Variations

Throughout the Manaslu 13-day Trek, you’ll get a full-course meal served and cooked by the local people of this region, a variety of Western and local cuisines. There are many food options available on the menu that you can choose from. However, as much as you reach a higher elevation the wide range of the menu gets limited.

Morning (Breakfast): In the morning time, you are offered a menu to choose from. Starting from local breakfasts like Tibetan bread with curry, Khapse (made out of wheat and sugar), and Puri (oily chapati) with vegetable curry with many others to modern breakfasts such as porridge, oatmeal, muesli, toast with eggs and butter jam, etc. are served.

Lunch and Dinner: For both sections of meals, the foods are even more delightful and fulfilling. The diverse sections of the menu consist of Momo, Pizza, Sandwiches, Ramen, Nepali noodles, Thukpa (made out of wheat, flour, and stew), soups (veg and non-veg), Spring rolls, french fries, and everyone’s favorite the ultimate Dal Bhat (served with rice straight out of farms, tomato pickle, spinach, green vegetables, lentil soup). The amazing part is this can be refilled as much as you can without any additional cost. It is highly recommended as it is fulfilling yet appetizing to indulge in.

While having these foods, don’t forget to dine in the kitchen area, where there is a traditional heater used to warm the lodges. These wide varieties of foods and comfortable lodges make your trip truly easy to complete without any fuss. All these meals are included in our Manaslu Circuit Budget Trekking package and are managed hygienically.

Accommodations

All the lodges/ tea houses are managed by the locals themselves. So, the guest houses they offer are quite basic and simple but have a pleasant aura to the surroundings. All the rooms dotted in this region are made out of wood and also covered by colourful Tibetan flags. In the kitchen area, we can see the dining area fully crafted with thangkas, paintings, mountain pictures, and traveller pictures with locals.

Every room is comfortable and hygienic enough to stay in. You’ll get a foamed warm mattress, pillow, and cosy warm blankets. In the lower regions, single rooms are provided with double-sized beds. But moving to the upper regions, you’ll get twin bedrooms with two beds. As the tea houses are limited, moving to higher elevations. However, there’s nothing to worry about. If the booking is done earlier, the single rooms with double-sized beds can be managed.

13 Days Manaslu Circuit Trekking Difficulty Level

The Manaslu Trekking Tour is generally considered a moderately challenging trek, which is even more challenging than the Annapurna Base Camp and Everest Base Camp Trek due to its harsh landscapes, challenging terrains, and limited amenities. Journeying to a remote area with rugged terrains along the limited tourist infrastructure, simple meals, and accommodation may be challenging for many trekkers. This trek demands both mental and physical fitness. The difficulty level depends upon the individual 3 P's (Perseverance, Persistence, and Patience level) as you will trek through frequent ascents and descents with barren terrains.

This adventurous trek generally suits experienced trekkers with a proper level of fitness. It would be a perfect choice for enthusiastic trekkers who seek to explore the remote areas of Nepal and crave to spend a peaceful time far away from the city. Starting from an altitude of 1,370 meters and reaching the highest point of Larkya La Pass, 5,106 meters, requires a proper level of physical fitness and some prior experience as well. Ascending to such high elevations with challenging terrains for 5-7 hours each day is not an easy task. The trek is quite strenuous, and one needs to be prepared for other possible challenges like altitude sickness and unfavourable weather conditions.

Despite all the hurdles, if you are well prepared, then the trek can go smoothly without any hitch of difficulties. Make sure to listen to the guide’s instructions during the trek. Although this trek sounds challenging, the region's authenticity and unspoiled views make your journey scenically captivating rather than frustrating. Nonetheless, this 13-day Budget Manaslu Circuit Trek can be tackled with proper preparation, trekking gear, planned itineraries, and great optimism and endurance.

Manaslu circuit trekking is known as an unexplored trek in the Himalayas. Only thousands of visitors trail through the Manaslu region due to its limited amenities and also it requires a special permit from the government with at least 2 trekkers in a group which makes it a less crowded place. It is the best choice for enthusiastic visitors who want a peaceful time and seeking to experience the authenticity of the Tibetan culture with a fresh mind. In present years, the number of hikers is slightly increasing because of its rawness and gaining popularity. However, it remains uncrowded as compared to any other famous treks in Nepal

Trek to the Manaslu Circuit requires a special permit as it is situated in a restricted region and a partner is required along with a guide and porter. However, trekking to EBC and ABC doesn’t require two people in a group if you have a great guide then you are good to go. Manaslu region is less commercial and less crowded place where there is a limited infrastructure with basic tea houses and lodges which makes the trekkers more difficult to trek than Everest and Annapurna region.
