Tiji Festival 2026: Official Dates and Daily Program Schedule

This 3-day Tiji Festival is celebrated in a boisterous way, and the preparation is done a few months before, from selecting the monks for dances, tantras, and only the lucky, skilled monks are chosen, knowing tantric spiritual practices, and they are the ones who perform such culturally significant event wearing masks demonstrating the triumph of good over evil.

During these 3 days of the Tiji Festival, all the villagers and Royal family members in Lo Manthang's main square, along with many other spiritual seekers and highly enlightened monks from across the globe. Together, they witness sacred monk dances, prayers, and rituals seeking blessings and spiritual renewal. Well! The date of the Tiji Festival is fixed based on the Tibetan Lunar Calendar, which is selected as per moon phases, the Gregorian calendar, with a traditional astrological calendar. After opting for this Mustang Tiji Festival Tour, via jeep, bypassing several settlements, as soon as you reach Lo Manthang, these are the celebrations that you will participate in.

For 2026, the 3-day Tiji Festival will take place from May 14th to May 16th, which is why the Upper Mustang Tiji Festival Jeep Tour itinerary is planned to align perfectly with these dates. So you can reach Lo Manthan (3840 meters), just in time, by exploring the deeper corner of Upper Mustang valley at the same time. Here is a brief overview of what each day looks like during the 3-day Tiji Festival in 2026:

The Beginning of Tiji Festival on 14th May, 2026: Experience the Thrill right from the First Day

Can you imagine waking up to horns echoing through ancient stone walls? Well, that's how the first day of the Tiji Festival starts in Lo Manthang! The atmosphere is contagious, with all of them gathering in the main square by sunrise. You see the monks delicately unfolding that 400-plus-year-old spiritual banner; this cloth has been intertwined with this celebration since long before your great-great-great-grandparents were born!

The real thrilling experience begins with the monks carrying out the Tsa Cham dance. They recount the story of the birth of Dorje Sonam (Dorje Jono), who is born to save everyone from a truly evil demon. Imagine the monks with masks that are vibrant in color moving slowly and deliberately across the courtyard. Each step they take will demonstrate the extent of anguish the demon inflicted on the people of Mustang. It is very much like a silent film, but the story can be understood just by watching their movements.

And then the sounds! The deep drums roll down the square while the long horns wail in almost haunting melodies that seem to thoroughly mix with the mountain air. All that the first day is about is just preparation for the impending great battle. It is like the calm before the storm, calming and steadying everybody's heart and mind towards what is to come.

The Battle Unfolds on the Second Day of Tiji Festival: 15th May 2026

Hold on, day two is the really big event! The energy goes from something calm and measured on day one to something intense and exciting on day two. The monks started dancing "Nga Cham," and it almost felt like watching an action movie, where suddenly it turned into a reality. The dancers move even faster and stronger to the depiction of Dorje Sonam fighting the demon, trying to send him far away. The monks wear frightful masks that could seem a little scary at first, but remember, they're on the good side! With swords in hand, the monks moved with such power that you could almost feel the battle take place.

The music gets louder and more dramatic, all pounding from the drums, while the clangs of bells are incessant, and long horns sound as if calling for divine interventions.

The whole village gets involved on this day. You'll see villagers bobbing along to the rhythms of the music, murmuring prayers along the way. They really believe that what's unfolding in front of them serves to protect the entire kingdom from ill origins. It's far more than just a performance; it's an almost tactile protection.

Grand Finale and Spiritual Conclusion of the Tiji Festival on 16th May 2026

Day three is the best one! This is the day everyone gets to celebrate, for the good man has won at last. The atmosphere here is completely changed from the solemn first two days' atmosphere, in which everyone smiles, laughs, and looks hopefully toward the future.

The defeat of the demon in a symbolic dance called "Rha Cham" on this very day reflects the image of Dorje Sonam completely overthrowing that demon and exiling it from Mustang forever. The costumes of the dancers are perhaps the most beautiful and brightly colored imaginable, and their movements are bursting with joy and celebration.

Music now fills the air with its cheerful and uplifting spirit; the drums and horns used to sound sets of harsh battle tunes just yesterday, but now they have switched to the happy kind that invites you to dance along. As the finale, all the artists appear together with more music, more dancing, and more gunshots.

The monk enacting Dorjee Sonam throws down an effigy made from Tsampa (barley), which represents the demon "Ma Tam Ru Ta." Prayers for world peace conclude the festival. Walking out from that final scene, even with the weight of hope pressing down on your heart, joy ascends from knowing that you've witnessed in all its beauty the victory of good over evil.
