Since then, this festival has been celebrated in the form of dance by monks wearing colorful masks and colorful attire, prayers, and chants showing gratitude for protection. Essential Information

What are the best seasons to do the Upper Mustang Overland Tour?

The Mustang region of Nepal openly welcomes visitors across the globe every year. Meanwhile, we are doing this voyage by jeep but not the trekhead, we must choose the appropriate season or time, which can either make or break our trip into pieces. In short, the ideal time/season to do the Upper Mustang Tour is during the Spring (March-May) and Autumn (September-November), offering perfect weather with natural crisp surroundings at their best aroma.

Spring (March, April, May)

To do the excursion to the Upper Mustang, Spring is hands down one of the best seasons to commence the journey. Being known as a bloomy span of the year, the wildflowers, including the vibrant tone of rhododendrons, and lush green hills thrive on the route making the trip even more enjoyable. As we pass by the Marpha “Garden of Apples” we can see several small plantations of red cherry apples growing beautifully.

The temperature generally ranges from 15 degrees up to 22 degrees Celsius, offering an impeccable time to travel by the 4WD jeep as it’s neither too hot nor cold, which is bearable inside the vehicle. Even during the exploration time, we can enjoy the short hike and stroll without being all sweaty and drained. At night time, it only drops to 0 degrees Celsius which is the best we could get being not too freezing in the Mustang Valley.

Besides, Do you know the famous Tiji Festival that spans 3 days every year at Lo Manthang? Well! It falls under May, allowing us to get a unique cultural immersion that genuinely reflects how rich significance this part of the Himalayas holds. If you are someone who loves to explore nature with the rich tapestry culture of Tibetans then Spring would be the best period to go for this excursion.

Autumn (September, October, November)

Autumn stands out as another ideal preferable season of the year and is most loved by wanderers as well. As it falls right after the end of the Monsoon (a high rainfall period) the air gets dry, perfect blow of wind, with the temperature just ranging from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. There is less chance of snowfall/rainfall, which allows us to take a drive without worrying about landslides and huge traffic congestion.

Reaching the higher section of Upper Mustang, we can witness the once-in-a-lifetime glimpse of huge caves, colorful rock formations, and unique landscapes without being hidden by the gloominess of the dark clouds. Not to forget! The vista of legendary mountains such as Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, Annapurna ranges, and many others rise stunningly in the clear skies. Apart from that, Nepal’s major festival of Dashain and Tihar takes place in October, letting us relish the festive vibes of the Himalayas throughout the overland tour.

How difficult is the Overland Tour in the Upper Mustang? Is the Jeep Tour Beginner Friendly?

The Overland Mustang Tour is categorized as an easy to moderate level of excursion that is tailored to make sure that everyone basks in this forbidden kingdom territory without worrying much about long day strenuous hikes. If you are wondering if a beginner can complete this excursion hassle-free then, Yes! It is an alternative package of Upper Mustang Trek for those who genuinely want to feel the uniqueness and serenity of this region being unbothered by leg trembling, remote trails, and, of course! mentally daunting pre-preparation.

However, one must have some basic level of fitness as we also need to hike up for 1-2 hours to pay a visit to many ancient monasteries and sky caves, highlighted spots which aren’t possible by a jeep. The hike won’t be too challenging; it’s like a stroll around amusement parks, just a little muscle-stretching voyage where a short hike leads you to a fascinating discovery of gompas that are displayed as art made hundreds of years back.

There are no age restrictions and no physical demands for this journey. Meanwhile, just make sure to consider one thing if you are traveling with children or grandparents. Make sure they are well supervised, although the safety will be 24-hour supervised by the tour guides. Taking off the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour during the seasonal (Autumn or Spring) span of the year, there won’t be many problems of landslides, heavy traffic congestion, or any other unforeseen situation. Hence, only give a thought to the expedition during the mentioned timeframe to make the trip safe and enjoyable at the same time.

Altitude Sickness

Indeed! AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is a big threat that undoubtedly circulates to every hiker, whether you are a pro or just a beginner. As the altitude gets higher, the risk of altitude sickness amplifies with it. Although this, the Upper Mustang Overland Tour reaches an altitude of 4660 meters at Lo Manthang while venturing to Thubchen Monastery. Until we reach such a high elevation we will be well acclimatized slowly adapting to the changing altitude which makes the chance of getting altitude sickness significantly low.

From the beginning point of the tour, we will be slowly gaining altitude in the ratio of 300 to 800 meters each day. In such a way, it helps us to adopt the thin oxygen level in a gradual form. That is why we have set this Upper Mustang Trip itinerary span of 1 whole week without rushing things along with exploring every region of Nepal.

What Kind of Accommodations Are Available During the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour?

Being a worldwide famous expedition, Mustang Nepal tends to cater to the preferences of every visitor. Throughout the Overland tour, you will be provided with top-tier amenities with the best lodges available in the region.

For safety purposes, everything will be alright even if you are solo or in a group the tour guide will always be there for you to ensure your safety and make the voyage even more exciting.

As the Mustang trailhead is filled with bumpy and dusty roads, we can only do this trip through the 4WD jeep. It would cover the rugged terrains, and rough landscape with ease ensuring that we are having a smooth ride without facing any hassle. Cars wouldn’t cater to the rugged parts and it also is quite challenging to pass by the unpaved road. Hence, to ensure safety and comfortability we’ll drive by the jeep.

You’ll be provided the best lodges of every stopping section with the attached washroom, cozy bed, comfortable pillow, and warm blankets. Every room usually has multi-electric power attached to it, even if it doesn’t (rarely) you can charge it in the dining area.

Secondly, If you aren't allergic to ginger items then, carry ginger solid or drink ginger soup or hot gingery water it will help to make the body warm and energetic. Carry warm clothes as it gets quite colder at night time falling at 0 degrees Celsius which can be quite freezing if you haven’t been even in cold altitudes before. Lastly, make a fixed balanced diet foods chart list of what you shall have and avoid, for example, if you are allergic to some foods then inform the guide beforehand so, the meals can be prepared accordingly.

Simply, you do not have to go over the top while making the list of packing that must be done. Just make your backpack stuffed with some dry-fit t-shirts, pants, and warm clothes, and if you aren't used to being in the cold altitude then, it is highly recommended to bring a sleeping bag along with you. Meanwhile sleeping bag must be too costly for just 13 days so, we can provide you for free if you want (must be returned after the trip is over).
