The jeep ride to Mustang starts by winding through the route to Sarangkot. Yes! The hill point of Pokhara begins the tour with a sunrise view over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Traversing by the notable settlements, and terraced farms with lush-grown crops and blooming flowers, the roadway takes us to the famous stop of Beni. Here, we’ll pay a visit to the famous Galeshowor Temple and have our lunch nearby. 

The drive continues, along the Kali Gandaki Gorge- the world’s deepest gorge passing by many charming villages such as Lete, Ghasa, Dana, Guithe, and also the famous Rupse. Reaching here, we will encounter the famous “Rupse Waterfall” that flows to the famous Kali Gandaki River that seems too unreal, so heavenly. Carrying on the drive the trail leads to the Tatopani-a natural hot spring where we’ll rest for a while. Afterwards, we head off to Kalopani where we will be staying tonight.

Waking up early in the morning, with the mountain views, our drive starts by steering along the Kali Gandaki River. Today, as we navigate by we can witness the gradual transition of lush green forests into dry desert-like terrain with towering landscapes. Passing by several towns of Mustang district including the Jharkot, Khingar, and Marpha renowned as “The Apple Orchards Valley” where we’ll stroll around experiencing the apple farming process and get a beautiful scenery of cherry red apple plantation.

Then, we’ll head to Muktinath via Jomsom, where we’ll pay our visit to the “Muktinath Temple”- a pilgrimage site of Hindus and Buddhists. ” It is believed that bathing here at 108 taps washes all your sins committed in this life. After the exploration, we’ll head towards Kagbeni- our destination for today. Here, we will also go to the “Red Monastery” said to be 500 years old surrounded by mani walls, chortens, and flags.

Getting our permits checked at Kagbeni, today we enter the Upper Mustang district of Nepal towards the iconic village of Lo Manthang. Starting our drive with mountain views such as Nilgiri, Bhrikuti, Annapurna I, and Tilicho Peak, we will pass by many notable villages such as Charang, Syanboche, Chuksang, Ghilling crossing the Kali Gandaki River.

Along the route, we will also cross the Lo La Pass (3965 m) that directs to the houses made in the shade of white clays, and ancient stones with a gradual transition of Tibetan plateaus when the territory of Lo Manthang begins. Reaching here, we can witness small gompas, stones engraved with Tibetan mantras, high red cliffs, and houses that seem like an ancient era. Today, the whole day is dedicated to exploring the walled city of Lo Manthang. In total, we’ll visit 3 ancient monasteries of Upper Mustang- Lho: Namgyal Gompa, Thupchen Gompa, and Garphu Gompa, where we can witness many monks meditating and other folks practicing any peaceful session.

We’ll also drive to Chhoser, where the famous Shija Jhong Cave resides which is said to be 3000 years old. Here, we truly can feel the true essence of the rich cultural heritage of Upper Mustang as many sculptures, paintings, statues, architectures, and chortens can be found here and not to forget! The ancient textbooks. We will also visit other sky caves within this region. 

Coming back from the day exploration, the rest of the evening we can see a glimpse of the Loba people showcasing their Tibetan culture through their livelihood. Witnessing them wearing traditional attire, jewels we will for sure! Get connected with their simple lifestyle. Rest of the evening, we will wander around the valley exploring the market having delicious apple candies, and apple wines, and buying tokens of love (souvenirs) to back home as a symbol of Mustang Nepal.

What is the best time to visit Upper Mustang?

Well! If it were any other trek, it would be a chaos which season to choose for. Meanwhile, as the Upper Mustang region of Nepal lies within a rain shadow area, you can do this tour to the Upper Mustang valley at any span of the year. It is an all-season tour, There’s no such thing as the peak/off-season or any month of the year that offers great views with surreal experiences. What to expect in Spring (March-May)?

What Permits are required for the Upper Mustang Tour by Jeep?

Even though, it is a trip by jeep or you can say via vehicle, it is necessary to obtain permits as Upper Mustang lies within the restricted areas. To get access in this region, 3 permits are required: TIMS Card (Trekkers Information Management System), Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), and the most important one, RAP (Special Restricted Area Permit)

The special restricted area permit costs around USD 500 i.e. NRS 67,000 per person and if you wish to extend the trip within the upper Mustang region then, it costs $50 for every additional day after 10 days.

ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit fee): It costs approx. $30 for foreigners and $8 for SAARC nationals. Without this permit, it is not allowed to enter the conservation area as this region is situated in an Annapurna Conservation Area. The permit fee directly goes to preserve the natural diversity and maintain the trekking trails. Without these permits, entry into this conservation area is not allowed. 

TIMS Card: USD 20 and NRS 2800 per person for every visitor

What are the requirements for Upper Mustang Permits?

To get access within this region, there are some rules set by the government of Nepal:

  • Firstly, the special permits must be obtained through a registered local trekking agency.
  • Secondly, solo travel is prohibited which means you must visit this region with a registered tour guide.
  • Thirdly, a valid passport and visa must be given during the application.

Option 2: Deluxe Bus: Another option is a tourist standard bus that costs around USD 10-15 depending upon how luxurious you want a bus to be!

  1. Exchange your money in Pokhara into NRS (Nepali Rupees) before the trip starts, foreign currency doesn't work in the Mustang region. However, if you've Dollars, Euros, or INR (Indian currency) then it does work in some places. But, it's better to carry Nepali currency.
  2. Even though, this package includes all your necessities for the trip, some extra expenses might be required for you like laundry, a hot shower, extra beverages, buying souvenirs, or any emergencies, so carry cash estimating the personal expenses. $10-$15 per day would be enough. 
  3. Every tea house/lodge has WIFI or telephone facility, for communication while you are traveling by jeep bring 1 SIM Card of NTC in Pokhara for internet and quick conveyance to back home. It only costs around NRS 120/- for 1 week data package- Cheap and Convenient.
