Residing at an elevation of 4,500 meters, the sacred Khayer Lake and the famous iconic Poon Hill await your discovery!

Detailed Overview

Khopra Trek is a newly introduced hidden treasure that runs through the corner of the Annapurna region. It is also referred to as Khopra Danda Trek by the locals, being introduced way back in time in 2009 A.D. Even though it has been a long year since its initiation, Khopra started gaining popularity in just 2012 AD after the government built the community lodges. That's what makes it a less explored trekking trail far away from modernization and of course! the only secret gem with a less traveled footprint within this world-renowned region.

In present days, Khopra Ridge Trek is a hot trending destination among the youths, beginners, and family that lets you get an experience of remote trails where several glorious Annapurna ranges such as Annapurna South, II, III, Dhampus, and Tukuche Peak befriend you in every step. Not only that, it also lets you witness the valley of the world's deepest gorge- Kali Gandaki with a blooming rhododendron in the vibrant tone of red and pink making the hike serenely peaceful with a perfect crisp of nature surroundings.

Right from the start, the Khopra Ridge Trek route passes along the pristine wildlife and flora as we enter the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area)- said to be the home of more than 300 species. Here, we might even get to encounter endangered wild creatures such as the elusive Red Panda, Himalayan Tahr (wild goat), and many more. Do you know that Danfe (Himalayan Monal), Nepal's national bird said to resemble what real beauty and grace look reside here? For bird watchers and keen wanderers like you, it’s a dream come true adventure.

Our 7-day Khopra Ridge Trek itinerary begins with a jeep ride from Pokhara to Ghandruk then we'll trek towards Tadapani. Staying a night there in this famous tiny settlement we will immerse ourselves in the rich hospitality of the Gurung community. Leaving the village behind, we will ascend to Bayeli Kharka- entering the Khopra ridge area that begins to give authenticity to this trek with only a few settlements of local tea houses providing a homely cozy environment to us.

Leaving Bayeli Kharka, we move towards Khopra Danda (Khopra Hill) on the third day from where the first glimpse of the world's 7th highest peak Mt. Dhaulagiri with surrounding other peaks welcomes us rising highly in the clear sky.

Next day in the morning we will head upwards to the sacred holy of none other than Khayer Lake (4500m.), where the sparkling twinkling lake with several Himalayan peaks can be seen. Paying a visit to the holy pilgrimage site following the Hindu and Buddhist religion we can truly feel the rich essence and vibration of this shining lake. We'll also visit the Khayer Barahi Temple with just a few minutes away from this site. Retracing our step back we'll spend overnight at Khopra Danda once again to gradually adopt the rising altitude.

While we may perceive it is the end of the captivating voyage! we'll go to the Swanta village- popular for its cheese factory of yaks and the rich culture of the Magar community. It is also referred to as "Swiss-like cheese in the Himalayas" by locals.

On the 6th day, we'll go downhill to Ghorepani following a well-maintained path from where many other famous trails like Annapurna Base Camp Trek and Annapurna Circuit Trail get connected. On the last 7th day, we'll do a morning hike to the Poon Hill View Point and witness the sunrise view over Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges while sipping a cup of coffee, a perfect way to conclude the trip. Our adventure of Khayer Lake Khopra Danda ends after getting back with a drive to Pokhara via Nayapul (New Bridge).

Discovering Khayer Lake: A holy sacred gem at 4500 meters

Khayer Lake is also highly recognized as a Baraha Lake which means "Boar" in the Sanskrit/Hindu language and is highly associated with one of the forms of the Hindu God "Vishnu". Wondering how this holds a rich cultural holy significance? It is said that, if you shower here or take a dip at this holy Khayer Lake then, all the sins will be washed away.

Many individuals across the globe following Hinduism and Buddhism come to pay a visit here just to witness this sparkling sacred lake. Located in the district of Baglung, it mainly attracts tourists to witness the "Yak drinking tradition" Yes, you heard it right! At the time of Janai Purnima (falls in August)  thousands of people came here to drink the hot yak blood that is said to purify the soul and provide good fortune.

Besides being a holy gem, it serves as a heavenly place with the sparkling lake reflecting on the shadow of surrounding Himalayan peaks such as Annapurna I, Tukuche Peak, Dhaulagiri, and many others. Just imagining it feels like a mystique land so, who wouldn't want to feel this once-in-a-while opportunity? Of course! everyone that's what makes this gem hidden treasure truly special.

Poon Hill: The Legendary viewpoint of Annapurna region

Ever heard of Poon Hill Trek where people come to Nepal for 4-5 days just to witness the sunrise views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges? Well! In this Khopra Ridge Trek itinerary, we'll cover this place as well. Annapurna south, Mardi, Dhampus Peak sipping a cup of tea witnessing it feels like a dream come true.

Rich Cultural and Tradition diversity

While we may think that Khopra Trek is all about eye-captivating beauty, the unchanged culture of Gurung and Magar will surprisingly amaze us. The best part about this journey is that we'll be accommodated at the tea houses run by none other than locals. As community lodges are only available up there unlike modern trails like Ghorepani and Tadapani. After we enter the Khopra Danda Ridge area we'll see the unchanged version of locals residing in the Himalayas. We can get a lively experience of what local foods taste like, how these Gurung family are running their life just by harvesting crops, and see their lifestyle on the backdrop of mountains with the buffalo and yaks grazing on terraced fields.

Exploring Ghorepani- A Heart of Annapurna trails amid the Himalayas

Nestled at the midpoint of other famous trails like Mardi and Annapurna Base Camp, this Ghorepani tends to win everyone with its heart anyone trailing along the ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area). It is a famous stop point everyone prefers due to its rich culture and the finest portion is the "home of locals here on the same pattern made in white clays with the roof of dry leaves" which seems like an ancient town straight out of 90's. The fascinating part is the soul-stirring hospitality of the Gurung people residing here and we can even try their traditional customs and jewels to make our trip memorable.

Ascending to Khopra Danda View Point (3660 m.)

Just visualize being in serenity with the 360 panoramic views of Annapurna massifs such as Annapurna II, and Annapurna III along with Dhaulagiri massifs, sound heavenly? This is the Khopra Danda View Point where the snowcapped peaks wrap you and the red and pink rhododendrons bloom beautifully rewarding white mountains with vibrant shades of colors. Essential Information

What are the best seasons to visit Khopra Ridge?

There’s no doubt that the season plays a crucial part in any kind of hiking/climbing, it can either make your trip a complete success or break it into pieces. If you are looking forward to doing a Khopra Ridge Trek, then Autumn and Spring are the ideal times as the weather is clear and the temperature blends perfectly along with it.

What to expect in spring (March to May)?

The spring season stands out as one of the best seasons for hiking/trekking. Who wouldn't want to trail along the blooming colorful flowers and trees? During this time, the rhododendron forest thrives in the shade of red and pink making the trail truly mesmerizing.

On top of that, the temperature ranges from only 5 to 15 degrees Celsius providing a perfect humidity to ascend a long way without being all sweaty and tired due to intense heat. As there is less chance of rainfall, the skies get clear which offers a crystal clear vista of mountains shining brightly without foginess.

What to expect in Autumn (September-November)?

Autumn is supposedly another best/peak season to trail along the Khopra Ridge area. Since this season falls right after the end of the monsoon, it provides perfect stable weather with less chance of rain/snowfall making the sky clear due to which the clear visual of snowcapped peaks and landscapes can be seen.

As we pass by some of the forested areas it stands out making trekkers hike on without feeling the hassle of walking on a muddy (slippery) path. Besides that, Do you know that Dashain and Tihar: main festive falls under October and November? If you are planning to do this trek to Khopra Ridge during Autumn then you’ll get to encounter meaningful and lively experiences of how festivals are celebrated in the Himalayas.

How difficult is the Khopra Ridge Trek?

Compared to any other Annapurna region trail, Khopra Ridge Trek stands out as being a short and moderate-level adventure in Nepal. Although it reaches an altitude of over 4000 meters while ascending to Khayer Lake from Khopra Danda, by far then we'll already get used to the increasing elevation.

On this very day, trekkers must hike for 6-7 hours which might be a little uncomfortable if you haven't had any idea of what hiking of over 5 hours is supposed to be. Nonetheless, as we will be heading up there at Lake of Khayer on day 4, there won't be any chaos or hassle walking that leads to making our leg tremble or hard muscle pain.

Regularly, we must hike for approximately 3-5 hours each day which can be easily commenced by even beginners as well. What makes this trail easy yet a kick of adventurous thrill is its trail through forested areas and landscapes. The good part is! the hike is shorter and passes through a well-maintained path without any hazards.

The only thing that one must be concerned about or that makes the trek even better is the remote amenities. As this Khopra Danda Trek was just newly introduced a few years back it is less exposure and less facilitated, unlike the other trails of the Annapurna and Everest region. The tea houses/lodges are quite basic yet fascinating to see which might be mentally daunting/shocking to beginners or stand out being the best experience of adventure in the Himalayas for enthusiastic trekkers.

Nonetheless, this trek can be easily completed by any group/age of people with some basic physical fitness and being mentally strong and well-known before the journey starts.

What are the Risks of Altitude Sickness on this trek, and what preventive guidelines to follow?

Well! Altitude sickness is a big threat when it comes to any trek crossing the elevation of 3500 meters. Whether you are a pro or a beginner wanderer, there’s always the risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) circulating in the mountain areas. For the Khopra Ridge Trekking, you do not have to panic about such things as the trip starts from the elevation of 2619 meters from Tadapani and gradually adopts the rising altitude, gaining less than 1000 meters each day.

Yes! It surely reaches the Khayer Lake elevation of 4600 meters, which beginners might feel a head-scratching concern about AMS, one could get! But do you know what? We’ve set this Khopra Ridge Trek itinerary with a properly tailored setting for a good acclimatization day. One day is given as a complete rest after you descend back from Khayer Lake, which would be a great help in adjusting the thinning air after returning. On top of that, our guide will always be there to assist if you feel any sort of discomfort and ensure that your expedition becomes a complete success without any hassle.

Although it is a beginner-friendly trek, as having said, “Prevention shall always be done than cure.” Here are some of the five-finger countable tips to avoid altitude-related illness.

  • Make sure to hydrate yourself with 2 liters of water per day (if possible) and if it does feel like too much then, maintain hydration by having some liquid foods such as soups, teas, noodles (ramen), hot lemon water, or something.
  • Do not rush things and walk at your pace slowly adjusting to elevation shift, if you feel any mild symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, nausea (feeling like vomiting and headache), dizziness (losing control or faintness), and most importantly, insomnia (feeling complete uneasy to get sleep) then, please inform the guide quickly as soon as possible.
  • If you aren't allergic to ginger items then, carry ginger solid or drink ginger soup or hot gingery water it will help to make the body warm and energetic.
  • Do not forget to monitor the oxygen level (pace of heartbeat) with the oximeter which will be provided by us at every stopping point of the tea house or in between.
  • Lastly, make a fixed balanced diet foods chart list of what you shall have and avoid, for example, if you are allergic to some foods then inform the guide beforehand so, the meals can be prepared accordingly.

Foods and Accommodations along the trail

Lower sections: There are many guest/tea houses on the lower part (beginning of the trek) at Tadapani, Ghorepani with tourist infrastructure rooms. You can expect to get an attached washroom, laundry facility, hot shower, electric sockets attached to the room, or any other well-maintained rooms. For the meals, as it is an Annapurna region trek (global popular trail) it serves a variety of meals from western, Indian, and Asian cuisines to local ones. To sum up, it caters to all the tastes of trekkers having different preferences and diet plans.

Upper sections: After crossing Bayeli Kharka, the food, and facilities are limited as few lodgings are only run by the locals. At these community lodges, you cannot expect luxury amenities as the lower part of the trek. However, they are basic yet comfortable ones. Electric sockets will only be in the dining area where you have to pay $2-$3 for recharging gadgets. So, it would be better if you carry a power bank along with you. FAQs

Well! There’s no doubt how this trek stands out being one of the beginners friendly. However, if you are planning to visit Khopra Ridge with family for the upcoming season months including children and old age then, you are good to go. The paths are well maintained with a hiking of 4-5 hours only per day. Many people have aced this trek along with their children as well making it a family-loved trek in the Annapurna region.

Generally, it takes approximately 8-9 days from Kathmandu to complete this trek. Meanwhile, we have set this itinerary from and to Pokhara, which takes 7 days to set an acclimatization day in Khopra Danda. If you are planning to extend or shorten the trip to Khopra, then you can customize it accordingly with the help of us.

It is highly suggested to buy an NTC SIM Card before the Khopra Ridge Trek. As wifi might not be available at some tea houses, which is rare as many of them have Wi-Fi connectivity. If it doesn’t work, then you can simply take 4 G data and buy an internet data pack for 1 week, paying 120 Rs costs from NTC's seven-week service. The network might be poor while ascending to Khayer Lake but it will be okay as we’ll descend back from there back to our lodge having WIFI.

For the permits, you must acquire two permits one is ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project), and the other is a TIMS Card. These 2 required permits are managed by us. The Khopra Ridge Trek permit costs around NRS 3000 (USD 27) in total, ACAP costs around NRS 2000 (USD 17) and TIMS for NRS 1000.

Although it is known as a beginner-friendly trek that one can complete without any professional experience or knowledge. However, please know that it is a newly introduced trek, so the number of tea houses in between is too minimal. On top of that, it passes through forested areas and less maintained routes, which can be totally risky for someone new who hasn’t trekked to the Khopra Danda Ridge before.
