Essential Information

Best Time for Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek

Trekking to Ghorepani Poon Hill is considered an all-season trekking trail in the Himalayas, due to short time, low altitude gain, and well-facilitated tea houses and route. Meanwhile, the best seasons to undertake this journey stand out to be Spring, starting from March to May, and Autumn, from September to November, where the weather is stable, the temperature is mild and moderate, and the possibility of precipitation is low or zero. During this particular span of the year, due to the clear skies, with no gloominess, the mountain and landscape views become more prominent, and the terrains remain dry, easy to trail, and ascend further.

On the other hand, there is a significant growth in tourism in the off-seasons as well: winter and monsoon. As trekkers do not have to spend a longer time in the himalayas, and compared to other remote routes, you do not have to compromise on logistics even during the off-season. Even though, because of the high rainfall, snowfall, and the muddy and slippery terrain, it is quite expected, navigating with the experienced guide and a well-customised itinerary makes the trip as smooth as peak season time.

However, nonetheless, Autumn and Spring are forever marked as the best seasons to hike to Poon Hill, which blends the stable weather, moderate humidity, and straightforward trailheads to proceed, with no possible challenges.

To let you understand in a better way, and choose the idyllic time for the adventure according to the pros and cons, here is the tabled overview on what to expect in each season of the year in 2026:

Season Weather Temperature Pros Cons
Spring (Best) Stable, Dry 9 - 13 °C Rhododendrons bloom, clear panoramic mountain views, and longer sunlight hours Mild Rainfall at early season
Autumn (Best) Clear, post-monsoon 5 - 12 °C Crusty landscape vista, crystal clear 360 degree himalayan peaks, and social vibe Busy and Crowded trails
Monsoon Warm and humid 14 - 22 °C Fewer crowds, lush greenery Muddy trails, leeches, and slippery stone stairs
Winter Freezing weather, snowfall expected (high precipitation) Below 0  °C Great insight into the mountains being snow-covered Heavy Snowfall

Trekking in Spring 2026 (March - May)

Spring stands out as one of the best times to explore the Ghorepani and Poon Hill due to several reasons. Firstly, the mild temperature, ranging from 8 to 14 degrees Celsius, and the weather remaining stable without fluctuation, with a lower possibility of rainfall and snowfall (precipitation). Secondly, the season of spring is also known as the beginning of the colors, where the blooming rhododendrons thrive beautifully, coloring the green forest and dry landscapes, making the trip eye-catching with thriving shade. Due to the long daylight hours, you can slow the pace and explore more out of this region, without rushing the itinerary, just because you are afraid of the night and dark.

As the rainfall and snowfall are less likely to be zero from mid-March to mid-May, the route remains dry, with the prominent views of the mountains and landscapes, making the trip truly safe and filled with picturesque views.

Trekking in Autumn 2026 (Sep - Nov)

Autumn is supposedly the best ideal time to embark on the Ghorepani Poon Hill Sunrise Trek. This season falls under the big festive seasons of Nepal, Dashain, and Tihar. As it is one of the busiest trekking seasons, it stands out as an ideal season to trek in Nepal. Due to festivals, you can get an opportunity to get a unique insight into the local customs, traditions, and culture by engaging in their boisterous celebrations. At the same time, if you are an outgoing person, then the most highlighted part would definitely be mingling with fellow trekkers, en route, cracking jokes, and making new friends.

The temperature condition lies somewhere between 5 and 12 degrees Celsius, with the weather remaining stable, as the autumn season comes right after the end of monsoon, presenting the clearest views of the mountains and the golden shade of the terraced fields, in the villages passing by.

What to expect in Monsoon (July - August)?

Even though this trip can be done during the monsoon, there are several challenges that one must consider; otherwise, the trip can be a complete nightmare. Monsoon in Nepal typically lasts for 2 to 3 months, from June and July, till last August, with a high level of precipitation, rainfall, and snowfall, making the route completely slippery and challenging to navigate with a muddy trailhead.

Along with that, the route to Poon Hill includes several uphill stone staircases, which might be risky to ascend due to heavy rainfall, and also, as there are several forested areas, the leeches might be problematic for beginners who have never been on any Himalayan adventure before.

What to expect in winter (Dec - Feb)?

Winter is the most unfavorable season to trek in any high-altitude Himalayan journey; however, as Poon Hill is a significantly easier journey, with well-marked trails and proper lodge availability, you might enjoy the snowfalls and clear views of the mountains, even in winter. As this trek takes you to an elevation of 3210 meters, at its highest, comparatively, it is not too high or tough to attain, if proper gears are carried, and preventive guidelines are followed, to avoid the risk of high mountain altitude sickness.

While the snowfall might amuse you, the low temperature below 0 degrees Celsius might cause blisters and cold, as well, so wear warm clothes. Other than that, the availability of lodges is throughout the year along the route; it's just that you must carry proper gear, and also consider monitoring the level of precipitation.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trekking Difficulty

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Short Trek falls under the easy to moderately challenging trek, considering the fact that it is relatively short, with well-marked trails, which makes it out to be a beginner-friendly adventure in Nepal.

The trek demands 4 to 5 hours of hiking per day, through several ascents and descents, and in some sections, it involves some steep terrains as well; however, as the route is simple and isn't rocky and includes no high mountain passes, the trip is simple and easy to pass smoothly. The only challenging part is when you come across the stone staircase to Ulleri, with a stone staircase, and continuous, uphill ascent, which lasts for 30 minutes, so it won't be strenuous; in fact, you will love the hard section, as other navigations are easy.

Meanwhile, the trip to Poon Hill does require a basic level of fitness, so make sure sure to train yourself, by engaging, in cardiovascular exercises, you are a first time trekker and pack the gears according to seasonal variation, other than, that, due to the easily accessible and maintained route, with wide range of lodges availability, overall this trip, is a moderate journey that suits any kind of hikers.

Altitude Sickness

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Sunrise Trek doesn't possess any risk of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), as the elevation is not too high, and it reaches the highest altitude of 3210 meters. However, any himalayan adventure is difficulty to be predicted as a risk free journey in case of altitude sickness, it is highly suggested not to be care free, and take a gradual ascent, following the preventive guidelines, such as hydrating yourself with 3 to 4 liters of water per day, and avoiding the high level of caffeine, and smoking or any kind of alcoholic beverage.

Besides, if you are wondering whether you could get one, then do not worry! Our 4-Day Ghorepani Poon Hill Trekking from Pokhara itinerary is tailored with a gradual ascent of 400 to 500 meters, where we are not speeding the trek, so your body gets used to the rising elevation. On top of that, throughout the journey, the experienced licensed guide, being medically equipped, will assist you, ensuring that your trip goes smoothly, and in case any unfortunate situation occurs, they will become your first-hand medical assistance. Just take an uphill walk slowly, navigate along with a guide, and carry proper gear, and with that, this Ghorepani Trek is a risk-free, safe, and has zero chance of AMS.

Do I need any special training for this adventure?

No, there is no specific physical training required for the trek to Poon Hill, as the terrains do not include any technical sections, high mountain passes, or remote isolated sections. However, engaging in physical preparedness strengthens your muscles and activates the stamina to undertake long hours of trailhead, lasting for 3 to 4 hours per day, making the journey a bit easier. You do not have to overdo it by hitting the gym or anything, such as building hardcore muscle; just engage in cardiovascular exercises, such as walking, running, cycling, helping in breathing, and adopt the rising elevation gain.

Here are the top 5 simple training tips for the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek:

The accessibility to WIFI is available in every tea house and lodge, where you will be settled in; however, as the internet works up there through a solar panel, do not expect high coverage of wifi, it might be slow, depending on weather conditions as well. The wifi only works in the dining area and isn't available within the room. You must go to the dining area, and some might charge you $ 3 to $ 4, depending on the lodge

Electricity

For charging the gadgets, the electric sockets aren't available within the room, where hikers must go to the dining area, and wait in a queue to recharge their mobile phones.
