Introduction:

Have you ever dreamt of climbing the great Himalayas such as Everest and K2 the top 2 highest peaks of the world? But, you might be stepping back as it requires years of preparation, and expertise and surely costs thousands of dollars. It's not anyone's forte, right? However, it doesn't mean shattering your dreams into pieces or being unable to leave your footprints at the summit point of the mountains.

Why back off when you can do peak climbing in Nepal where 8 of the 10 mountains reside rising highly touching the sky? Yes, you heard it right! A spellbinding journey to the tip of Island Peak awaits your discovery. Not only that but also reach Everest Base Camp, the lap of the world's highest mountain at the same time, as this odyssey is the combination of peak ascent and an enchanting trail walking within the Everest region of Nepal offering a once in a lifetime opportunity in a single trip!

Overview:

Island Peak also locally known as Imja Tse is one of the famous expeditions who want to quench their thirst for reaching the lofty snowy mountains and start their first mountaineering experience. Located just 10 miles away from the legendary Mount Everest (8848.86 m), it is also referred to as "Everest Floating Island" as it seems like floating in the middle of the sea of ice surrounded by the iconic peaks of Lhotse and Nuptshe offering a visual feast to the climbers. To justify this statement, one can truly get the exceptional panorama of this dramatic landscape from Dingboche.

Ever thought about how legends Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa aced Mt. Everest for the first time? Well! This Island Peak Climbing is truly a fascinating endeavor thatanswers your question for sure,as it follows the historic steps of these renowned summitters. Going a little backward in time, before creating history they made the ascent to the pinnacle of this peak in the year 1953 as a training ground. Since then Island Peak Nepal has been the No. 1 choice for climbers who want to gain first-hand high-altitude experience. So, it doesn't only remain as an expedition but also a venture to find a profound connection with an introduction to the mountains.

Although climbing Island Peak sounds like a wild strenuous adventure, to your surprise, it isn't technically challenging. It is rated as 2B in terms of difficulty, which simply falls under the easy to moderate level demanding expedition that opens the gate to any individuals willing to conquer the top but surely requires proper preparation. Yes! Basic knowledge of gears and equipment regarding how to use ice axes, ascenders, and crampons, and how to take a grip of ropes is highly recommended. For that, a training session will be given before starting the odyssey and at the Island Peak Base Camp by the sherpa guides, so you do not have to worry much about it!

When it comes to the overall trip, then it surely isn't a stroll around the city or dining at a fine restaurant! it has notable challenges along the way. Meanwhile after reaching the summit of Island Peak, the surreal views of heavenly mountains such as Makalu (8485 m.), Ama Dablam, Tharmseku, and Lhotse- 8516 m. along Mt. Everest itself with the dramatic backdrop of the Nuptshe wall makes your every sweat, breath, and step one hundred percent worth it.

The best part comes entering the Sagarmatha National Park, right from the start passing by the dense forests of rhododendrons, and pines that provide a thriving color to the boring landscape. The blooming flowers just in front of Himalayan peaks throughout the trail of Khumbu region act as a medicine to the leg trembling hike.

As you might perceive this quest is solely only about mountaineering, it is much more than that. As it is a combined trip from Everest Base Camp with Island Peak Climbing, it takes you to diverse settlements such as Namche, Phakding, Pheriche, Tengboche, Lobuche, and Pangboche you'll surely get an opportunity to get a unique insight into the locals. Do you know about sherpa locals who are the shadow behind the climbers making their name on the highest peaks? Along the route, you will be mesmerized by their warm hospitality where the kids and sherpas welcome you with a smile along with the greeting of "Namaste" Showing respect makes you fall with their simple lifestyle.

Besides, the first section goes for reaching the Everest Base Camp (EBC)- the lap of the world's tallest peak where every climber's and explorerers dream turns into reality tends to motivate you, even more, to triumph over the mountain. The second destination follows over the vantage point of Kala Patthar- 5545 meters the highest point anyone can ever reach without the climbing permit where the 360-degree panoramic views of the "Khumbu Glacier" and "Mount Everest" under the golden array of the sunrise reward you at it's best. Lastly, leads to the pinnacle of the peak, our main goal destination of this journey.

Looking forward to signing up for this expedition? Wait no more! Essential Information

Best time to climb Island Peak

For any expedition, it is crucial to know what the perfect seasons would be to conquer the Himalayas. It can either make or break your adventurous journey, we surely do not want to face challenges just because of bad climatic weather, Do we? Of course, not! It might be quite surprising, but the Lobuche Peak Climbing can be done any span of the year. However, the best seasons are Spring and Autumn for safety purposes without compromising the spectacular views of the mountains.

Spring (March-May)

Spring stands out to be one of the most preferable times for this expedition offering stable weather with a mild temperature to begin the summit ranging between 10 to 15 degrees Celsius at the lower trail. The routes are decorated with vegetation, colorful rhododendron flowers, and oaks blooming in shades of pink and red making the hike filled with thriving nature.

After reaching the base camp, the temperature reaches 5 degrees Celsius which is quite appropriate to set up a camping tent and acclimatize the property before the climb. Meanwhile, at the summit point, it falls to -10 degrees Celsius which can be handled well with the warm gears, and yes! With the perfect timing to climb before the top point gets windy. Besides, this season provides long sunny days to gradually ascent, acclimatize and stretch the summit hours without rushing.

Autumn (September-November)

Another, best season for climbing Island Peak is Autumn avoiding the risk of heavy snowfall/rainfall as it falls right after the end of the monsoon bringing clarity to post-monsoon. Not only that but also decreases the risk of high avalanches, and stormy winds which surely helps in a safe ascent. The temperature is the same as in Spring reaching a maximum of 15 degrees from 0 degrees Celsius which is a pleasant condition to start an expedition with.

At the summit, or we can say at the base camp it falls to -10 to -15 degrees Celsius in the night time which is quite common and bearable to adventurer seekers. To sum up, it is an ideal time as it also provides the finest unhindered views of Himalayan peaks without any fogginess. The best part is! The main festival of Nepal: Dashain and Tihar falls in October which means you can immerse in the festive vibe of the Himalayas along the trail gaining a unique and conquering the peak safely with a once-in-a-lifetime insight.

How difficult is Island Peak Climbing?

The Island Peak is rated as 2B in terms of difficulty which simply means easy to moderate with some technical sections in between as expected. It is known as a “trekking peak” depicting that anyone having basic mountaineering knowledge or even beginners can reach the top point of the peak, so one can imagine how one can succeed the peak climbing straightforwardly without any mountain hassle.

However, having said that no remarkable rewards can be achieved without patience. Just like, it takes approximately 13 to 15 days of hiking journey with 5-6 hours of daily trek before reaching the summit point walking across the rock terrains, glaciers, some passes like Kongma La Pass- 5535 meters, and some steep snow ascents which might be a little frustrating to some having zero idea. So, make sure to be mentally strong and create great enthusiasm with a high patience level.

The most difficult section is of course! the summit day that demands a walking pace of 9-10 hours through the sloppy pathway covering 11 miles of distance. However, the duration is quite expected as we must navigate by the steep snow and crevasses gradually without any rush. It wouldn’t be a big deal if the summit is done quickly as we leave by 2:00 am to summit the top point before it gets too windy acting as a safety net.

Other than that, If you are wondering, if it requires some pro climbing experience and high mountaineering experience then, No! But, just make sure that you get some insightful knowledge, and some training sessions and carry the proper gear and equipment without overlooking some challenges. If not then, this Everest Base Camp Trek with Island Peak Climbing might bring many obstacles if basic preparation isn’t done well.

What is the risk of Altitude Sickness and what preventive guidelines to follow?

Acute Mountain Sickness can occur to anyone after crossing an altitude over 3500 meters. Altitude sickness happens when the air gets thinner and the elevation rises rapidly above sea level which drops the oxygen level significantly. It can occur to anyone if some precautions aren't done beforehand or you can say if proper guidelines aren't followed properly.

As this peak climbing of Island Peak reaches a height of 6189 meters, there is always the risk of high altitude sickness circulating. Due to this, we've set 2 acclimatization days at Namche and Island Peak Base Camp to adapt to the rising elevation that helps to avoid such risks. If you want then, 1 contingency day will be added if you feel any difficulty and want a proper rest at the trailhead. Hence, there is nothing to worry about altitude sickness as this Island Peak Climbing itinerary is set by a professional expert ensuring safety.

As the line goes by, "One shall always look for prevention rather than cure", thus, here are some of the guidelines that help to avoid the risk of AMS no doubt:

  • Remember to walk at your own pace without rushing things! if you feel any sort of discomfort such as nausea (a feeling like vomiting), difficulty in breathing (rapid heartbeat), losing appetite, insomnia (no sleep at all) or even dizziness (loss of control and faintness) then, inform the guide quickly to acclimatize or rest in a stop point before things get worse.
  • Drink 3 liters of water daily, it helps to prevent mouth dryness that could lead to AMS. If that sounds too much then have something hot soupy noodles or foods to warm up and hydrate the body.
  • Avoid dry meat, high sugar, caffeine, or any sort of alcohol or cold beverages that could lead to a rapid heartbeat and cause a sad stomachache (diarrhea).
  • If you are quite concerned or unsure about the AMS, then carry "Diamox" which alters the blood PH and increases respiratory rate which is most effective for non-experienced hikers.
  • Fast walking or running in the mountain areas should be avoided just walk along the guide without going over the board to reach the top point quickly. Remember "Consistency is the only key to succeed any ascent".

Permits required for Island Peak Climbing

Before you set the footprint at the summit of Island Peak, some permits must be attained. The permits don't only provide you with the gateway to start the climb but also ensure safety.

For this expedition, you'll require the following permits mentioned below:

  • Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit fee: USD 28 (NRS 3000/-)
  • Island Peak Climbing Permit: It gives you a ticket to finally attempt the peak, the Island Peak Climbing Permit Cost depends on the seasonal basis. In the peak season of Spring (March-May), it costs around approx. USD 250, and USD 135 during the Autumn season (September-November). However, during the off-season i.e. Winter and Summer, the costs will be more than 50 percent cheaper around only USD 70.
  • Local Area Permit (Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit): USD 18 (NRS 2000)/-

Note: After the booking is confirmed, the permits will be managed by us and the costs are included in our package.

To climb the summit of Island Peak Nepal, the costs simply depend on the seasonal basis if you are opting to do the peak climbing in the off-season; winter, and summer then, the price would be much lower as it tends to deduct the lodging and permit fees. However! at the usual time at peak seasons, the costs stay relevant.

Our Island Peak climbing cost starts from USD 1799 to 2499 USD and includes all the necessities. Whether it's permit cost, accommodation, meals, basic equipment, climbing guide, porter including all their (insurance, food, entry fee, in short everything). Key Tips for Climbing Island Peak (Communication, Gears, Expenses, Acclimatization, Electricity, and more)

  1. Buy climbing boots/crampons one size bigger than the actual shoe size, it will probably fit in after wearing a thick shock also make sure to have some wearing practice beforehand to get comfortable with heavy shoes.
  2. Tick off all the packing lists with the instructions given by the Sherpa guide, if you have missed anything then, it can either be rented in Kathmandu, Thamel, and Namche at an affordable price.
  3. Do the money exchange in Namche or Kathmandu as a credit card, doesn't work up there if you have INR (Indian), Euro, or Dollar then, you are good to go. However, it is highly suggested to carry NRS (Nepali rupees) for emergencies.
  4. After crossing Tengboche via Namche there is no availability of electric sockets in the room and the gadgets are charged in the dining area. Bring 2 power banks to power up the gadgets as it costs around $4-$6 to recharge also, queuing just for recharge might be quite frustrating.
  5. Even though this, Lobuche Peak climbing package covers all the necessities you might require some cash for a hot shower, laundry services, bottled water, and some extra facilities if so, then estimate the costs accordingly. A maximum of USD 10 per day would be enough!
  6. Carry a small waist bag or backpack to fit a phone, camera, personal medicine, chargers, power bank so on.. to have quick access even if you hire a porter.
  7. Buy an NTC SIM Card to communicate along the trail, it works fine, however, 3G or 4G isn't expected but suitable for giving a phone call. Nonetheless, every tea house has WiFi; at the base camp, we'll use a satellite phone.
  8. One of the key things that one must consider is to check the heart rate, and oxygen level, and track your pacing level. Do not rush out ascending as high as possible. Just walk at your pace slowly and gradually. To check the oxygen saturation we'll provide an oximeter for you. Keeping a daily track of your well-being at such a high altitude is highly recommended.
  9. At the base camp ensure to have a good training session regarding "how to make the grip of ropes, how to use the crampons, ice axes, and harness just to recall the usage of it and activate the memory muscle."
  10. Create a note of a balanced diet chart mentioning your meal habits and the food items that you are allergic to. It helps the guide to pay attention to what kind of foods you are getting served at the lodges.
