This short 5-day Mardi Himal Trek starts from Pokhara and meanders through the verdant rhododendron forests and varied landscapes and ascends to the Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500 m) by passing through the notable hamlets of the Gurung and Magar communities.

Even though this Mardi Himal Trek might sound a bit rapid and smooth to navigate, the breathtaking views of iconic mountains won't be compromised. That is why it is gaining mass attention worldwide, and the "Mardi Himal" itself is called the "Rising Star of Annapurna region" that captivates hikers over more than 1,00,000 every year. As much as it sounds unbelievable, you'll be fascinated to know that it showcases not 1 and not 2 but more than 10 legendary mountains in every stride! Due to this, every visitor that has commenced on this Mardi Himal Trek route has mentioned, "You might have come here to introduce yourself to the mountains with limited timeframe, but it stands out being one of the best memonto walking from woodlands to alpine meadows showing the distinct climatic zone in the Himalayas".

Our Mardi Trek begins with a short drive from Pokhara to Kande, then afterwards we'll start our walking trail by firstly climbing uphill through the forested trail to "Australian Camp". YES, it is quite popular to showcase the alluring view of Macchapuchre (fish tail), the mountain that will befriend us throughout the trek. Here, we can also see small camping tents set here for those who want to feel the mini mountaineering feel and get the best sunrise views over snowcapped peaks. Descending from here, we'll move toward Pitam Deurali, immersing ourselves in the tranquility of the woodland.

Before reaching the "Badal Danda", we'll pass by the Forest Camp and Low Camp. In between, do not miss out on gazing at the rare wildlife that you might encounter en route. Annapurna Conservation Area serves as a home to more than 200 species of birds, 20 rare mammals, and more than 100 other wildlife, the langur monkeys playing back and forth, the himalyan tahr hiding behind the woods, and the musk deer simply looking beautiful as it should will remind us that we are at their homeland. BIRDWATCHERS! Make the best out of the hike, as the Danfe- Nepal's national Bird shows its grace, and the Himalayan yaks grazing in the farmlands stand out to be the best moment of this Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek.

On the 3rd very day, we'll ascend to the Mardi Himal High Camp, where we can get to catch the marvelous transition of towering landscapes to snowy frosty peaks. Along the way, the Macchapuchre, Mardi Himal, and other Annapurna massifs stand right in front of us; it feels like we can almost touch them. Attaining High Camp, we might fall in love with the charming settlement amid the mountains that offers the best enchanting snowfalls! MAYBE! our first snowfall experience and a chance to build a snowman?

After reaching the Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500 m) the next day, the best panorama vista of the Annapurna massif with Mardi Himal and Mt. Fish Tail stretching our surroundings, make our every step that has been left here, truly worth it! Exploring Mardi Himal: The Rising Star Captivating Hikers

The Mardi Himal (5,587m) is a pyramid-shaped mountain that bears equal beauty despite its lesser fame compared to nearby peaks. Our Trek to Mardi Himal Base Camp is a close-up Himalayan mountain experience with stunning up-close views of Fishtail Mountain and the Mardi Himal panorama. The southern exposure of the mountain dominates the Modi Khola valley. Mardi Himal generates stunning panoramic vistas, so no matter what angle we look from, it's equally stunning! It wouldn't be surprising to see this peak as an emerging or a rising super star that is recently winning the hearts of many wanderers across the globe looking forward to trail along the Annapurna region.

Forest camp to low camp: Witness the transition of forested land to alpine land.

The best transition that we could ever witness during this Mardi Himal Trekking would be while moving higher from forest camp to low lamp. YES! Forest Camp is simply so densely covered with a verdant forest of blooming rhododendron with only few settlements slatted by blue roofs that tends to everypne's favourite. The amazing part is! Here lies a volleyball court and a football ground. Even though it's small, seeing kids playing laughingly shows us the fun element of the Himalayas despite the remote amenities.

Ascending higher to Low Camp, the woodland slowly transforms into high landscapes and steep ridges from where the mountain views seem like we are almost about to touch it. From the forested area to the alpine zone, the Nepalese flag fluttering in the high wind coming out of such himalayan peaks shows us a unique insight of this Mardi Himal Trek route.

Mardi Himal Base Camp: Challenge yourself and get surrounded by panorama vista

The Mardi Himal Base Camp stands out as the highest point of our 5-day Mardi Himal Trek from Pokhara. Getting started with just 860 meters and reaching to the 4500 meters is surely not an easy task. It demands a high level of consistency and patience while we make our way to the base camp through the snowy trails and some steep trails; it gets quite strenuous for beginners. But you know what? After 3 hours of hiking and attaining the lap of Mardi Himal, it makes our hike 100% worth it with the 360 panorama spectacular view of highly towering mountains.

Machhapuchhre feels so close that we could reach out to touch it as it stands directly ahead of us. Its distinctive double-peak structure makes it an absolute match for its descriptive "fishtail" name. The nearby Mardi Himal peak shows its huge size, making us feel as tiny as an ant. Several peaks within the Annapurna range, including Dhaulagiri and Hiunchuli, along with their massive rocky structures, become visible too. This view can't compare to any, so let's live in the moment to appreciate it before our Mardi Himal Trekking gets over!

Badal Danda: A Cloud amidst the Himalayas

The Short Mardi Himal Trek features Badal Danda as its enchanting destination, where we can enjoy breathtaking views of the Annapurna peaks with Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) and other peaks. A forest trail through alpine meadows takes us to a cloud-covered clearing at Badal Danda. It is translated to "Cloud Hill" and as the name says, it is a hill clearing that is covered in clouds and mist all the time! Yes, clouds will dance around us, making us feel we are lost in the clouds.

Experience the Magar and Gurung Cultures and Traditions

The Mardi Himal Trekking route takes us through many Gurung and Magar villages with unique local customs. While we stay at tea houses run by locals, we can experience Nepali hospitality and local cuisine. It's also interesting to see the local Gurungs wearing their traditional attire and jewelry while doing their daily activities, and if we want, then we can surely try their attires and jewels, respecting their culture. The tea houses are simply made with wooden and slatted roofs with a dining area with a wooden kitchen where our lovely meals are served!

Dashain, Tihar, Lhosar, and Buddha Jayanti happen throughout different seasons of the year, so we might get a chance to see how locals celebrate. And you know what? Sometimes, local teahouses give cultural performances with dance and music to display the unique cultures of the locals. So, if your time fits, then start this Mardi Himal Trek from Pokhara during the festive timeframe.

Poon Hill Trek VS Annapurna Base Camp VS Mardi Himal Trek (Differences and Combined Tailored Itinerary)

As we've already mentioned, the Annapurna region tends to serve many other iconic trekking in Nepal, we just want you to choose the best expedition with the perfect combo bo possible by just stretching some few more days.

Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek VS Mardi Himal: Have you ever heard of Poon Hill that is world renowned to serve the best possible views of not 1 not 2 but more than 20 iconic peaks. While Mardi Trekking shows the close-up views of mountains in every step. The Poon Hill Trek tends to reward you by the cultural diversification through notable villages. If your time fits then you can surey, combine Mardi Himal Trekking via Poon Hill that completes within 10 days.

Mardi VS Annapurna Base Camp Trek: Simply speaking, the trek to Mardi falls under a friendly expedition, being budget-friendly and easy at the same time. The ABC Trek tends to be more costly, demands prior experience, and takes you to the lap of the world’s eighth highest mountain, Mt. Annapurna (8091 m). But in the case of views, Mardi Trek beats all; however, if you have good enough experience, then you won’t regret combining Mardi Himal with ABC Trekking.

Either way, it all depends on your own choices. Whatever you choose, you won’t even regret 1% of trailing the whole Annapurna region with the right guidance of the DHT Team!

Over 480 species of birds are found in this area, including the Danphe (National Bird of Nepal), eagles, and vultures.

After a short break, we make our way through subtropical forests with moss-covered trees and many ridges. Terraced farms of Modi Khola Valley can be seen occasionally as we approach Low Camp.  We reach “Badal Danda”  or “Cloud Hill” covered in clouds and mist almost all the time. With golden sunrise and prayer flags dancing in the wind, we take a moment to appreciate the beauty around us.

Essential Information

Best time for Mardi Himal Trek

The Mardi Himal Trek is an all-year-round trek because of its simple trails and lower elevations that welcome beginners, families, and pro hikers. However, the Spring and autumn seasons are ideal for Mardi Himal trekking because the weather allows extended walking durations without discomfort. The hiking trail remains dry and safe because there is no precipitation, and the weather provides clear visibility.

The trek to Mardi Himal remains less preferred during winter and monsoon since snow and rain are common occurrences during these seasons. During the winter months, the trail becomes both snowy and icy, while during the monsoon season, the trails transform into a muddy mess. However, with some preparation and a planned Mardi Himal Trek Itinerary, anyone can successfully do this trek in the off-season as well.

What to expect in Spring (March- May)?

The spring season stands out as one of the best times for trekking adventures as it has mild temperatures (5- 15 degrees Celsius) that blend perfectly with the climate.  Walking throughout the day remains comfortable because the humidity levels do not become excessive. The path features a stunning array of rhododendron flowers in red, white, and pink, among multiple other wildflowers. As winter just ended, the air is cool, and clear skies without any clouds bring stunning, unhindered views of the Himalayas.

What to expect in Autumn (September to November)?

Autumn is another peak season for Mardi Trek because it brings moderate temperatures (15- 25 degrees Celsius) with long, golden, sunny hours. At lower elevations, we can witness the stunning golden crops in terraced fields ready to be harvested. Moving to higher altitudes, the mountain view becomes clearer and more beautiful with crystal clear skies. Higher altitudes reveal progressively better mountain views that become spectacular through clear, crystal skies. People celebrate the Dashain and Tihar festivals in October/ November, which allows us to experience Nepalese culture.  If you are into cultures with a blend of nature, then autumn is THE season for you!

Mardi Himal Trek in February?

February is like a hidden gem for trekking in Mardi Himal. Although it may fall in the winter season, it gives quite a unique experience with a perfect blend of rhododendron blooms and snow-covered trails in higher altitudes. February marks the end of winter. The trails are covered in a layer of snow, and the rhododendron starts blooming, calling for spring. And the best part? The trails are mostly for yourself, so you can enjoy some “ME” time with nature.

However, you must be prepared to tackle cold temperatures to avoid any mishaps during your short Mardi Himal Trek if you are planning in winter season.

Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty

The Mardi Himal Trek from Pokhara falls under easy treks in Nepal, so anyone can undertake this journey with no difficulty. Its accessibility and short duration make it favorable for beginners, families, or pro hikers. Daily walking hours between 4 and 6 span distances of 6 to 8 kilometers based on selected paths. The route is suitable for beginners, yet every trekker should prepare in advance according to their experience level.

The route starts to get tough as we make our way from Low Camp to Base Camp due to the changing landscape, narrow ridges, and steep and rocky terrains. You need to move with caution along an exposed ridge while traveling between Forest Camp and High Camp. Our path to Mardi Himal Base Camp involves the most difficult yet fulfilling journey because we must climb steep slopes exceeding 4500 meters. The hand railing serves as your handy tool for climbing difficult slopes!

Mardi Himal Trail presents a straightforward trekking experience along a secure path that does not involve extensive time spent in challenging areas. You just need to be prepared and take your time to ascend slowly to the Mardi Himal Base Camp in the steep terrain.

All in all, our thoughtfully prepared Mardi Himal Trek Itinerary incorporates measures to stop altitude sickness from developing. A daily elevation increase of between 400 and 500 meters allows your body time to adjust to different altitudes. Thus, anyone with any level of trekking experience can successfully undertake the Short Mardi Himal Trek. Tell our guide immediately if you develop any health problems because he will provide safety support.

Altitude Sickness

When trailing in areas above 3000 meters altitude, you might feel Acute Mountain Sickness(AMS), also known as altitude sickness. The Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4500 meters marks the highest point of the 5-day Mardi Himal Trek, but travelers who stick to a properly developed itinerary will not experience altitude sickness.

On our most demanding but rewarding day, the climb from High Camp to Base Camp leads to an altitude gain of 900 meters. It can be a problem if your body has not adapted to the changing altitude. Don't worry!  Our Mardi Himal Trek Itinerary is well-planned to ensure that you ascend gradually while your body adapts to the altitude change.

If you start to feel unwell, you must notify your guide about any symptoms of AMS that include headache, nausea, and dizziness. He will make sure that you are safe and help you to prevent such problems.

Food and accommodation during the Short Mardi Himal Trek

As the Annapurna Region is one of the most popular trekking destinations, which is also a trail to many famous routes, you can get well-managed facilities.

Food options range from local Nepali to international dishes on the trek to Mardi Himal, and you'll certainly find something that fits your taste!

High-calorie, hearty food makes up the essential breakfast because it supplies needed energy throughout your trek. Tibetan bread, chapati, eggs, porridge, jam, and bread are the most common. Lunch and dinner options are almost the same in all teahouses, which include the staple Dal Bhat served with rice, veg or non-veg curry, lentil soup (dal), and pickles. The best part is that you can refill it as much as you want!  Pasta, noodles, Thukpa, Thenduk, Momo, pizza, burgers, fried rice, etc, are other lunch and dinner options.

Basic lodging on the Mardi Himal Trail includes simple, cozy rooms that provide only basic amenities. The teahouses provide either twin or single bedrooms that contain basic furniture, insulated mattresses, pillows, and blankets. At high altitudes, it is advisable to bring sleeping bags for extra warmth against the cold.

The majority of tea houses use shared bathroom facilities, but a limited number of tea houses provide hot showers, while the higher camps have limited water facilities. You can get hot water, do laundry, charge your phone, and access WiFi facilities, as the Mardi Himal Trekking Route is well-maintained with the amenities you need.
