This region was out of bounds for treks and tours until 1992. Since its initiation, it has been captivating trekkers around the globe for its unique architecture, history, and festivals connected with ancient mythologies that have remained largely unchanged for centuries.

Our Upper Mustang Trek itinerary begins with a pleasant bus drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara along with the Trishuli and Marshyangdi Rivers side by side. Upon reaching Pokhara, we’ll be welcomed by majestic views of mountains, including Dhaulagiri, Lamjung, and Hiunchuli Himal, and crystal-clear lakes reflecting those peaks.

The next day, we’ll take a flight to Jomsom. Keep your eyesight widely open to the windows as the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna massifs reward you with their spectacular views.  Upon landing in Johmsom, we will begin our trek to Kagbeni (2804 m), the gateway to Mustang.

As we traverse through the diverse settlements from Kagbeni to Chele (3050 m), Syangboche (3800 m) Ghami (3520 m), and Tsaran (3570 m) in the following days. We are greeted by the landscape abundant in beauty and culture. Brilliantly painted chortens (Buddhist shrines), mani walls, Deep gorges, unusual colorful rock formations, and giant hills engraved like the shape of snakes create a magical otherworldly view. The warmth and hospitality of Thakali, Gurung, and Tibetan along the way add a personal touch leaving us speechless.

But this is not the end of this magical journey. The heavenly experience awaits us at Lo Manthang, the former Kingdom of Lo. Known as the walled city in the Tibetan language, it is surrounded by forts of the middle ages and adorned with mani walls. As we wander through its narrow streets, the fluttering prayer flags and the Loba people reciting prayers with beads in hand create a serene and spiritual aura. What makes the 14-day Upper Mustang Trek special for 2024/2025?

Upper Mustang is truly a heaven on Earth offering an adventurous walk around the Tibetian plateau that leads you on a journey filled with great myths and profound spiritual connections. While embarking on a two-week trek in this region, you are not only exploring the region's heavenly beauty but also unveiling the hidden gem of its rich spiritual culture, which makes this region unique and special compared to any other region.

Here are the major highlights that add an extra touch to captivate trekkers and encourage them to embark on this 14-day Upper Mustang Trek.

Tiji Festival (Tenchi): A prayer for world peace

Many tourists come to visit this Upper Mustang valley, mainly to witness the great Tiji Festival, also known as Tenchi. It is celebrated between April and May, depending on the Tibetan lunar calendar. The locals refer to it as the “Chasing of Demons,” which is highly connected to Tibetan Buddhist traditions.

It is believed that Dorje Jono summoned the gods and saved the Mustang Kingdom from destruction by battling against evil forces. The festival is celebrated continuously for three days and depicts the victory of good over evil through prayers, monk chants, and dances performed by monks wearing ancient masks and dressed in colorful Tibetan attire, emphasizing themes of protection and purification.

By holding the Tiji Festival, locals believe that celebrating it each year protects them from evil and brings happiness and prosperity to their lives. Embrace this opportunity to explore the rituals and traditions of the Tibetan-influenced Nepalese communities, which leave a lasting impression on your heart and soul.

Lo Manthang (Himalaya Kingdom frozen in History)

If you ever had an urge to experience the rich culture of Tibetan life closely. Then, the Upper Mustang trek is the perfect option for you. The capital of Upper Mustang is the city of Lo Manthang, a city stuck in time due to its ancient monasteries with rich history. Before this city was considered as Kingdom of Lo which still reflects the same ancient era where there is still a king monarchy provision and followed the same provision till date. Sounds fascinating. Right? In this present day, many people refer to it as a “walled city” where you can feel the white walls and narrow streets reflecting its historical significance.

Throughout your trek, you’ll get meaningful cultural insights and hear many unbelievable unheard stories by locals in Lomanthang making the trek full of good surprises. During the 10th Day in Upper Mustang, we’ll pay a visit to Namgyal Gompa which is a center for spiritual learning and practice along with the rich Buddhist sculptures, manuscripts, and artifacts enhancing the significance of your trek.

The old white houses, monks chanting in the ancient monasteries, colorful Buddhist prayer flags fluttering in the serene semi-aird desert-like paradise, and the warmth and hospitality of local Tibetan people, this is the upper Mustang region of Nepal for you.

Kaligandaki Gorge (the world's deepest gorge) and Sacred Shaligrams

During this Upper Mustang trekking, you’ll trail along the famous Kali Gandaki River side by side and witness the deepest gorge, Kali Gandaki Gorge. The Holi fossil regarded as the embodiment of Lord Vishnu can only be found in this river. It is used for worship in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing a living divine presence, and many individuals come here just to search for this fossil, which can be sold worldwide for a high price.

There are many local shops available in the Upper Mustang region where you can buy them at a much cheaper price. The pilgrimage walk in the Mustang region lifts your heart, soul, and mind, leaving a lasting impression even after the trek ends.

Ancient Sky Caves and Peaks of Upper Mustang

Being known as the place beyond the mountains, where the wind flows at high speed and alluring views of majestic mountains such as Nilgiri, Dhaulagiri, and the Annapurna massif, alongside desert hills, colorful giant rocks, and green hills can be seen from Upper Mustang. Besides these, Mustang is also referred to as a land of caves. Over 10,000 sky caves have been discovered here so far, where people lived as far back as 800 BC until 1400 AD.

Several caves such as Jhong Cave and Shija Jhong Cave, have a great spiritual connection, which attracts many foreigners who come here for meditation purposes and seek spiritual solace. It is also believed that these sky caves in Mustang bring prosperity, and happiness, and protect locals from dangers, captivating individuals to seek blessings. However, temperature can drop significantly between day and night, resulting in extremely windy conditions. So, you must be prepared for any unexpected weather changes.

Essential Information

Best Time to do Upper Mustang Trek

Spring and Autumn are the ideal times to commence a voyage to Upper Mustang. The weather is clear and sunny during these seasons. Trekking in the winter season is the least preferable and only recommended to experienced trekkers.

Spring (March, April, May):

It is considered a peak season for this trek. It is perfect for enthusiastic trekkers who crave to learn the cultural diversity. The temperature is mild and less windy making it easier to trail with a stunning vista of the Himalayas on the backdrop and various flowers including rhododendrons and wild alpine flowers blooms perfect adding a vibrant tone to nature. Last but not least, the Tiji festival falls during this season captivating many people worldwide to trek in this region.

Autumn (September, October, November):

It is regarded as another suitable time to trek in the Upper Mustang Valley. The clear views of stunning landscapes, hills, and crystal clear skies due to moderate temperatures are perfect for trekking. Even though it is also called a busy season, you’ll see a lesser number of trekkers creating a serene environment for the hike, and on top of that, the major festivals of Nepal such as Dashain and Tihar lie in these months making it a perfect season for the trek.

Monsoon (June, July, August):

As it is situated in a rain shadow area, it remains dry throughout the rainy season (monsoon) as well. If it were any other trek, embarking on the monsoon season would not be suggested. However, since it is almost a zero-precipitation region, trekkers can complete this trek while enjoying the lush greenery in the lower sections of Mustang.

Winter (December, January, February):

Winter season treks are the least preferable and only ideal for experienced trekkers. It is difficult to get accommodation facilities during these seasons and the weather is also unpredictable making the trek on a challenging side. We recommend you plan carefully if you want to trek during this time.

What type of accommodation will I get during the Upper Mustang Trek?

The primary lodging facilities in the Upper Mustang Trekking are mostly teahouses/ guesthouses with comfortable enough basic amenities. Every lodge that trekkers will be staying in is run by the local family of this region. So, don’t expect a lot of luxury facilities in their guest houses. Although everything is basic, you will get clean, hygienic, and warm hospitality after long hours of trekking.

Rooms are simple with single or twin beds, with one sitting table and include a room service for meals as well. But, we highly recommend you dine in the kitchen area, as it has a big shared firing heater to warm you up. In the lower sections of this trek, it is common to get an attached bathroom in a room. But as you go into the upper regions, it is quite hard to get one and costs double the price. Nonetheless, if pre-booking is done earlier, the room with a connected bathroom can be arranged in some sections of the trek.

The extra charge must be paid for the use of facilities like a hot water bucket to shower and laundry in the guesthouse. Electricity is in the form of solar power, it is asked to pay 4$ to 5$ depending on hours as rooms don’t have any cables to plug in for charging. So, it is always best to carry a power bank/ capacitor along with you.

Foods and drinks in the Mustang region

Throughout the Upper Mustang Trek, you’ll receive three meals per day with a wide range of menu options consisting of Asian and Western cuisines that cater to the tastes of all the people trekking to the region. Although every teahouse serves a variety of cuisines, we also highly recommend trying their local foods such as Tibetan bread with Tibetan salt tea, Thukpa, and many others that reflect their Tibetan culture.

On the breakfast menu, there are many options available, such as toast, omelet, hot porridge with milk, noodle soup, Nepali spiced tea, coffee, and lemon tea, which are provided as your choice before the hike. During lunch and dinner, the foods are made according to your preferences from the menu, including Dal Bhat, ramen, Nepali noodles, fried rice, non-veg and veg curry, dry meats, Thenduk, momo, noodles, apple pie, pasta, etc. So, you don’t have to worry about food throughout the trek. Just make sure to eat fully to increase your stamina for walking.

It is highly recommended to have Dal Bhat during lunch or dinner. This Nepali food is full of nutrients. Along with rice, you will get lentils, curry, and green vegetables with pickles, and the amazing part is you can refill this as much as you can without any extra charge. So, it is highly preferred by trekkers.

Note: Although the region has a variety of foods and drinks available, we highly advise you to avoid any kind of alcoholic beverages or caffeinated items to prevent altitude sickness. It is kindly advised to drink hot soups (essential), ginger tea, lemon tea, black tea, and hot lemon water, which help to warm your body in cold temperatures.

Upper Mustang Trek Permits

As the Upper Mustang sits near the border of Tibet, it is a restricted area. To trek in this region, there are two permits required: the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP). We Destination Himalaya Treks and Expedition will arrange all necessary permits for the trek.

The special restricted area permit costs around USD 500 for one person and if you tend to extend the trek (within the Upper Mustang region) for more than 10 days then you’ll need to pay an additional USD 50 per day.

For ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project), foreigners must pay $20 and $8 for SAARC nationals. Without this permit, it is not allowed to enter the conservation area as this region is situated in an Annapurna Conservation Area. The permit fee directly goes to preserve the natural diversity and maintain the trekking trails. Without these permits, entry into this conservation area is not allowed.

Requirements to get Upper Mustang Trek Permits

To get through this restricted area, there are major rules set by the government of Nepal:

  • You must trek along with at least one other person, and this requirement does not include the guide and porter. This means that there should be a minimum of two trekkers in your group, excluding any hired guides or porters.
  • You must apply for permits through a registered local agency for special permits.
  • You need to take at least one licensed guide along with you by a local authorized trekking agency.

Travel Insurance

With our trekking experience of many years, we are well-known about the incidents that might, unfortunately, occur during high altitude trails so travel insurance is necessary for us to cover any sort of possible accidents.

Insurance must cover all kinds of helicopter rescue, all medical treatment bills, flight delays or cancellations, etc.

Therefore, traveling insurance can never be obtained in a rush, so please check your insurance policy in a detailed way for the trek. Essential Travel Tips for the Upper Mustang Trekking

  • Always carry a power bank and solar batteries as in the upper region, there is no electric plug available in the room and lodges charge you $2-$8 to plug in your phone for the charging.
  • Bring cash with you, estimating the additional expenses you might incur during the trek, as ATM services are not available in remote areas.
  • Pack only essential items that are necessary for this trek. Don’t overpack the trekking bag as it becomes quite strenuous while ascending.

  • Carry water purification tablets to purify the water provided by the lodges.
  • Don’t forget to carry high-SPF sunscreen, as the dry air in the Mustang region can damage your skin due to overexposure to the sun.

How to be prepared for the Upper Mustang Trek?

Before embarking on this adventurous journey, there are many things to consider to make this trek a complete hassle-free.

Mental Preparation:

Although, trekking to the upper Mustang is not quite challenging compared to any other trekkers trekkers may face unfavorable weather conditions and unexpected situations in remote areas due to which a high level of perseverance, persistence, and patience are required.

It is more important than being physically fit as the trekkers feel the rise of altitude changes and tiredness and being in a remote area is not as easy as it sounds if you are a beginner. So, you must know that you are trekking to the limited facilities area which is a completely new world from city life, and be prepared accordingly.

Physical fitness:

Heading towards the mountain area means ascending every day with a high level of elevation through various ascends and descends with some narrow steps for which high stamina and being physically fit are mandatory as trekkers have to walk for at least 4-6 hours each day.

To strengthen the body you can do some sorts of cardio like running, cycling, and hiking with some kgs of loads in the bag that makes the challenging trek smoother for beginner trekkers as well.

Research:

Even though there will be a professional guide throughout the trek, it’ll be great if you do proper research regarding the trail route. In addition, also about the favorable season, distance, elevation, and most importantly accommodation which would be the best choice for you with our DHT management team.

Medical Considerations:

Before heading towards this trek, please pay 100% attention to your health and medical conditions to prevent any health issues as the Manaslu region accessibility is limited and remote, immediate access to health care isn’t easy there so it is highly recommended to do a whole body check-up right before embarking on this journey and be prepared accordingly to the guidelines of a doctor.

FAQs

This trek normally takes 14 to 17 days to complete depending on your itinerary. It is also possible to complete the Upper Mustang Trek within a week through a jeep tour. However, this option is highly discouraged, as proper acclimatization is often not achieved during a jeep tour, which can lead to altitude sickness.

No, as this region lies in a restricted area. Several rules must be followed to trek in the upper Mustang. Trekking solo is strictly prohibited. You must trek with at least one other person, excluding the guide and porter. To make it clear, there are a minimum of 2 trekkers required in the group and that doesn’t count the porter and guide.

Yes, hiring a guide is the first thing any trekkers must do through a local authorized trekking agency for safety purposes. Trekking to remote areas means the possibilities of unseen challenges. If you hire a professional guide then, he will not only show you the trekking route but also accompany you ensuring safety and comfort throughout your trek in Mustang region.

When it comes to Porter, it isn’t completely necessary to hire. But, if you are a beginner then it is highly advised to take a porter along with you to carry your trekking bag. Even if you are a professional trekker, hiring a porter helps you to enjoy the trip without any difficulties. Carrying the bag for continuously 14 days is not an easy task.

The health of the porters and the comfort of our clients are our main priorities. All the arrangements for this trek in the upper Mustang are done on this basis. The luggage limitation of the porter is an average of 20 to 24 kg. One luggage or duffle bag of 2 trekkers is carried by one porter (1 porter for 2 people). Hence, the luggage limitation per person is a maximum of 10 to 12 kg in this trek.

The starting point of the Upper Mustang Trek is from Jomsom and ends in Jomsom as well. You’ll take a flight to Pokhara and return to Kathmandu by bus or jeep.

If you are doing the trek with the proper guidance and a professional guide then you are good to go despite your age. Many people from 12 years old to 60+ old generations have done this adventurous trek to this region without any challenges. A proper mental set and a basic level of fitness would be okay for this trek. But the only thing that needs to be taken care of is altitude sickness, and getting enough acclimatization properly.

Drinking water is easily available at the teahouse/lodges. You can buy a mineral water bottle but you should do proper disposal of plastic bottles. You can also fill boiled water at teahouses paying extra charges. Always carry a water bottle and water purification medicine to prevent unwanted health issues.

As the trek is done in remote areas, there are only a few settlements or tea houses in this region. In the lower section, you will get a room with an attached bathroom. But as you go higher, the facilities will be limited. In the upper region of this trek, you will get a room with 2 beds with a shared bathroom due to the limited rooms available. While accommodating in lodges, you will get basic facilities including Wi-Fi, communication, hot water, and charging, so there’s nothing to worry about.

The internet connectivity and phone network are very poor in the Upper Mustang. But, in the lower regions, they are stable. By paying extra charges at teahouses, satellite connections are there but may or may not work. Using a local sim card, an internet facility can also be used in the lower regions.
