Preparation for the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking

Even though this trek is not so strenous to navigate, it is always best to prepare yourself fully just to make the trip go smoother. Especially if you are a beginner, you must take some considerations beforehand so that while making your way 5-6 hours to the next destination stop, you don't feel any kind of challenges during the Annapurna Base Camp Hike.

There are 2 major factors to keep in mind while prepping: Physical, Mental, and Medical Considerations.

Physical Fitness

First things first, you have to have proper physical fitness since the journey is long and there are some physically challenging sections on the trail. Start training your body 2-3 months before the Annapurna Base Camp Trek. Cardio is king. Your cardio needs daily sessions of 30-40 minutes at least four times weekly through swimming, hiking, running, and walking, which provides additional health benefits. Your legs, back, and core require major support, so they need dedicated strength training. You should begin hiking while carrying a backpack on weekend days, starting from short distances to longer distances.

Positive Mindset

While we always tend to give 100% to strengthen our body and be fully geared up, we often tend to overlook the mindset aspect. YES! It is your mind that keeps you going when your body tries to give up. Use positive thinking and remind yourself why you chose this expedition during times of diminished motivation. Meditation and yoga help to keep your mind focused so you can enjoy the beauty of the journey, not the difficulties. Make your mindset filled with positivity and have that extra glow of enthusiasm. Do some research beforehand, so on the trail you don't feel any sort of confusing shock, which becomes completely different from expectations.

Medical Consideration

Even though this Annapurna base camp trekking route doesn't pass by the remote terrains like any other isolated treks in Nepal, it is always better to go through medical procedures and do a whole body check-up just to know how your body is currently working. It is highly recommended to do a checkup regarding health conditions 1 week before and carry the medication accordingly. As the emergency access to a serious health line is just a helicopter evacuation, to avoid such situations, make sure to follow take preventive guidelines accordingly. Also, to know more in-depth, check our recent blog entitled: How to prepare for Annapurna Base Camp Trek?, which has a comprehensive guideline from starting to be fully prepared for the trek to Annapurna Base Camp.

Surprisingly, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek stands out as a year-round trek in Nepal; however, the peak seasons are Spring and Autumn as the temperature blends perfectly with the climate, making the trails insanely captivating with the unhindered views of mountains and landscapes from every side with no any disturbance of high rain/ snow fall.

Meanwhile, you can even go for the ABC Trekking in winter and monsoon to experience some extreme trails. Winter seasons have lots of snow-covered tracks showcasing the snowy, frosty peaks with freezing temperatures, and on the other hand, monsoon months have muddy and slippery trails perfect for those who want to push their limits. While these seasons are not impossible, the real question is, are you up for a challenge? For a detailed insight regarding the weather and temperature, with some essential tips, check out our Best Time for Annapurna Base Camp Trek blog.

What to expect in Spring (March to May)?

Spring is one of the ideal seasons to undertake the Annapurna Base Camp Hike, as expected, and there are several reasons attached to it. Firstly, as the temperature only ranges from 5 to 12 degrees Celsius, it offers mild humidity to navigate through the sunny days for 5-6 days without feeling drained out and tired. Secondly, as this season falls right after winter, there is almost zero chance of rainfall, making the route safe to walk through without any fear of being slippery at the forested and steep ascent landscape area, providing the prominent vista of the Himalayan range at the same time. And hey, if you are a “ME TIME” kind of person, you’ll find spring just right, as there are relatively fewer crowds on the trail.

Last but not the least, this span of the year provides you with a magic show from Mother Nature, with wildflowers and rhododendrons blooming brightly in red, white, and pink colours. The Annapurna trail is as beautiful as it can be, and unclouded skies give you an unobstructed view of the mountains. In April, the Nepali New Year celebrations add cultural richness to your journey as villages come alive with music and dance.

What to expect in Autumn (September to November)?

Autumn stands out as another best season to do the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking, as the weather keeps a stable climate without any rain or snow. The temperature is moderate (15- 25 degrees Celsius) with bright sunny days, so the mountains can be perfectly visible. Not only that, you can also immerse yourself in local cultures through festivals like Dashain, Tihar, and Lhosar, along with the harvesting of gold-like crops in local villages.

Besides, as it falls at the peak span of the year for treks in Nepal, you get to mingle with many fellow trekkers and create some new memories, making truly other adventurous mates (friends) that even enrich the overall trekking experience to cherish forever.

What to expect in Winter (December to February)?

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek in winter also tends to be the most popular span of the year, yet it is a challenging one, but not impossible. During snowfall, the path transformed into an icy surface that was completely buried under snow, making traversal challenging. The temperature experiences sub-freezing conditions at Base Camp as night falls, resulting in potential health problems.

However, white icy trails provide a magical, fairytale experience with very low crowds on the route, allowing you to enjoy the snowfall and build a snowman along the pathway. If you are someone who loves to walk along the snowy trails with the best views of the mountains, then you will surely not regret starting this trek to Annapurna Base Camp in the winter.

What to expect in Monsoon (June to August)?

ABC Trekking during the monsoon season is the least preferred time due to slippery trail conditions resulting from rain. Sometimes, the trails may be blocked due to landslides, while leeches add to the challenge. But if you look at the bright side, the trails are mostly empty, and a lush green landscape becomes a pleasure to the eyes.

No matter what season you are looking forward to, trail along matching the holiday timeframe spring to autumn and winter and monsoon, we at Destination Himalaya Treks assure successful completion through careful preparation and planning.

Annapurna Base Camp Trek Distance

The distance of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek simply depends on the route that you undertake, as there are many routes to reach the legendary Annapurna Base Camp, whereas starting from Pokhara- Birethati with a drive, it covers approximately 97 km of hiking trail, bypassing many stopping points such as Ulleri, Ghorepani, Poon Hill, Upper Sinuwa, Tadapani, Chhomrong, Ghandruk, Deurali, Machhapuchare Base Camp (MBC), to finally reach ABC and descend back to Bamboo, Jhinu Danda, Ghandruk, retracing the same pathway in 11 days.

For a detailed breakdown, you can check our blog entitled:Annapurna Base Camp Trek distance.

What sets Annapurna Base Camp and Circuit apart?

While it might sound as if the Annapurna Base Camp Hike and Circuit are the same, the differences are far beyond and different from each other, in terms of several ways. Firstly, the difficulty level itself is a big question mark, as ABC Trek passes through the well-maintained tea houses and crowded sections, the Annapurna Circuit Trek navigates by the rugged and least lodging facilities, and circumnavigates the whole Annapurna Trail, and touches the 2 districts of Mustang and Manang at the same time.

While the Annapurna Base Camp reaches a maximum altitude of 4130 meters, the Annapurna Circuit takes you at 5416 meters, of Thorong La Pass and ABC to the lap of the world's eighth highest mountain. In comparison, the circuit tends to be far challenging and also contributes 90% of the success rate if asked honestly, due to the high elevation and challenging terrains, whereas ABC Trek is a beginner-friendly trek, and safe at the same time, making it the most preferred expedition in Nepal.

To know the comparison, what makes them completely distinct from each other? Continue reading our blog: Annapurna Base Camp vs Annapurna Circuit.

Accommodation throughout the Annapurna Base Camp Hike

Annapurna Base Camp Trek route is a popular trailhead for trekkers, as hundreds of visitors pass by the track each day. There are many tea houses and lodges available, so you don’t need to worry about lodging.

The lodging in this area is simple and includes sharing or attached bathroom, comfortable mattresses, cushions, and pillows but extra charges are added regarding Hot water buckets, wifi, laundry, and charging. Although the tea houses are not so fancy as all are operated by the locals here, you'll get a comfortable stay here. In lower areas, single rooms are readily available in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and the trekking regions but finding them becomes difficult at higher altitudes as lodges are limited during the Annapurna Base Camp route.

Your comfort and stay throughout the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking is guaranteed by the organization whereas you don’t need to worry about pre-booking and safety at lodges. We'll accommodate you to the best lodges in the region and try to manage a single room for every stay. But, do not expect this in the higher regions as there are only a few lodges available.

To know more details, take a look at the Accommodation in the ABC Trek that you would be provided during the trek to Annapurna Sanctuary.

Foods and Drinks during the Annapurna Base Camp Trekking

During the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) Trek, you can find a wide range of foods from traditional foods to international cuisines like Indian, Chinese, and Tibetan that cater to the taste of every visitor.

On the breakfast menu, a wide range of food options are available like Tibetan bread served with veg curry and boiled eggs, Roti (Indian Chapati), Frest toast with butter, jam, and omelets, Oatmeal items, and hot porridge. On top of that, here you’ll also get hot chocolate, expresso, and americano which just gives a perfect kick to heat up the body before starting the hike.

For Lunch and Dinner, you get a variety of traditional Nepalese cuisines and Tibetan local cuisines like Thukpa (made of noodles and vegetables), non-veg momo, or Spanish Momo, that you surely don’t want to miss out! Other options like Ramen, Spaghetti, Fried rice, non-veg and veg curry, dry meats, Thenduk, momo, Pizza, Burgers, and Spaghetti, are served. Sounds appetizing, right?

While having dinner, take advantage of the dining area sittings. Here you can enjoy the heater made out of clay (a traditional heater of the Himalayas) providing warmth to such cold altitudes. So, make the best out of this.

We recommend you have dal bhat before the trek as it is a nutritious food that allows you to continue the trek with a happy tummy.

A Typical Day in Annapurna Base Camp Trekking (What every day looks like along the trail)

Every day on the Trek to Annapurna Base Camp can be a little different from yesterday's due to weather conditions, changes in landscapes, and your overall mood and physical fitness. All breakfast meals are served at 7 am in the teahouses or lodges where you spend the night. The breakfast options will typically include porridge, along with eggs, bread, and tea or coffee.

Once you hand your bags to the porter, he quickly goes ahead before the rest of your group follows. During our trail hike, we stop at a teashop to eat noodles or Dal Bhat as our main lunch meal. It is essential to eat proper meals and stay hydrated for well-being throughout the ABC Trekking route.

The trek duration spans between 5 to 7 hours daily. The trek requires a decent fitness level to make walking more comfortable, but it can be done by everyone with patience. The guide will point out important sights and give you cultural insights while you enjoy the surroundings. Please inform your guide if you experience any health problems so he can assist you. Most important of all, take time to admire the breathtaking mountain peaks that tower above you.

We will reach our lodge to enjoy hot or cold drinks before proceeding to dinner. Bedtime is early, and we suggest limiting your alcohol consumption throughout the Annapurna Base Camp Route. Also, before taking a nap, do not miss out on playing UNO, playing Nepalese instruments such as the Madal and Flute (Basunri), and singing songs while mingling with locals and fellow hikers.

Permits required for Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Tips for the Annapurna Base Camp Trek in Nepal (Network, ATM, Packing Recommendation, Safety, Electric Sockets)

  • Make sure to withdraw sufficient Nepali rupees from banks in Kathmandu or Pokhara ahead of your trek because ATMs are not available during the trek. The teahouses accept Nepalese cash only.
  • Get a local SIM card from Ncell or NTC in Kathmandu or Pokhara to use during emergencies, as these providers supply sufficient network coverage throughout the trek. You can connect with your friends and family, although the coverage may be limited in high altitudes.
  • Make sure to keep drinking water throughout your trek to prevent dehydration. You can bring a reusable water bottle with a 2-3 liter capacity and refill it in teahouses and use filtration tablets to ensure the water is safe to drink.
  • You will need a portable high-capacity power bank or charger when planning to use your phone or camera. Remote areas often lack reliable charging facilities at teahouses, despite some locations providing power sources.
  • Even though there are several tea houses along the trail, the prices are very expensive. Buy quick snacks to grab in between the trek such as granola bars, protein chocolates, and instant noodles for a quick snack in between.
  • Carry only the necessary trekking equipment to keep your backpack lightweight. A fully necessary trekking kit should include layered clothes, proper boots, a sleeping bag, and essential products such as sunscreen, lip balm, moisturizers, and required medications.
  • Make sure to carry an oximeter and check your pulse rate through the oximeter (given by us). If it goes lower than it should, then inform the guide immediately.

Before, Everest Base Camp most people preferred to do ABC to be familiar with the acclimatization and to avoid altitude sickness.

Trekking to the foot of the Himalayas is always 100% worth trying for, as it gives you a lifetime experience with unforgettable moments and a sense of achievement. You’ll encounter different villages, mountain ranges, and beautiful species along the way. It is the best option for enthusiastic trekkers and a lifetime opportunity.

The weather is completely unpredictable in the Himalayas, but always consider your trek in favorable seasons, i.e Autumn and Spring when the climate condition isn’t too harsh but mild which will be the best choice for you to avoid the sloppy path on the way that makes the trek even difficult due to the slippery terrain field.

While ABC Trek does not demand travel insurance, it remains essential to have it because it functions as an all-important protective measure against unforeseen events. It covers medical expenses, emergency evacuation (helicopter), lost gear and trip cancellation costs so that your expenses remain under budget.

Any beginner with proper fitness and preparations can complete this trek. In addition, it's best to team up with a local travel agency in Nepal like us so that they can assist you with anything and craft your Annapurna Base Camp Trek itinerary accordingly to make it more enchanting and a success by customizing it at your pace. You can best prevent altitude sickness by ascending steadily while gaining between 300-500 meters of elevation above 3000 meters. Your daily water consumption needs to reach 3-4 liters while you should keep alcohol consumption low and decrease your caffeine usage. If you feel a headache and dizziness, report to the guide and descend immediately. Drink plenty of water and maintain a steady pace. You must obtain medical authorization to take Diamox (acetazolamide)  to prevent symptoms.

A private guide is recommended as he will adapt the pace to your needs and assist in emergencies. Several families together with active senior groups have achieved completion through extended itineraries spanning 10 to 12 days.

The well-marked trails together with the numerous teahouses that draw fellow trekkers make Annapurna Base Camp solo trekking feasible. When trekking solo, you must handle altitude sickness by yourself because expert supervision is not available so you need to solve unexpected incidents with your complete gear load. Hiring a guide or porter provides beginners with the absolute safest and most comfortable way. Trekking becomes enjoyable since you dont need to organize logistics or navigate thus your experience remains relaxing and enjoyable.

Our Annapurna Base Camp Itinerary allows you to modify it based on your personal choices, spending limitations, and available time. The additional days allow you to extend your time in Annapurna while visiting different areas in the region. Similarly, you can shorten the trip to fit your time frame as well.

The transportation facilities to expect are 4X4 jeeps to get to Bikash Danda, which is the starting point of the Annapurna Base Camp Trek route.  Although the roads can get a bit rough, this is just another part of the adventure. You can also take a local jeep or a personally owned vehicle to get to Hile. You can also organize everything with our trekking guide, so you don't have to bother about it.

Windproof and waterproof items are among the required gear along with insulated and breathable clothing layers for the Annapurna Sanctuary Trek. Participants must also bring hiking boots with proper break-in time and a 30- 40L backpack and sleeping bag rated for cold weather. Trekking poles for knee support and a headlamp with extra batteries are essential. The must-have items include hats, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen in addition to a purification system, first aid supplies and power banks since charging services are scarce and cost more as you climb higher.
