Introduction:

It is said that art can only be felt and not truly expressed. In the same way, far away in the Himalayas, there exists a hidden land that seems like a folk role, where ancient villages are frozen in time, a place that signifies how life used to be back in the 90's era. Imagine yourself in the most remote area, where the soothing chants of monks wind in the air coming out of 500 old-century monasteries, blending with the yak bells jiggling and the colorful Tibetan prayer flags flagging with their tone.

YES! Such a gem resides here in Nepal, this is the North Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek, which takes you to the lap of the third world's highest peak- Mount Kanchenjunga where the rich tapestry of Tibetan culture and high snowy mountains befriend you in every stride! The good news is! this trip is budget-friendly yet being crafted by our pro expert team.

Essential Information

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek difficulty

Being regarded as one of the most remote trails in Nepal, the Kanchenjunga Trek falls under a challenging trek that passes through the rugged terrains, with several ascends and descends demanding at least 6-7 hours of hike duration each day. So, you must be physically fit and need some prior trekking experience, if not then, this trek isn’t suitable for you. The most strenuous section comes when we trek to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp (pang pema) with an altitude of 5200 meters, which isn't an easy task to navigate.

There are 3 factors, that make this Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek a bit strenuous all, firstly the isolated area with a bare minimum of highly facilitated amenities, secondly the total distance coverage of 8-9 km each day, and lastly, the risk of altitude sickness that might hit you after crossing 3500 meters. As it is a tea house trek, it would be too mentally daunting for those who are beginners who haven't been far away from city life even once. However, with the calmness and the peaceful surroundings, this journey gives you something unmatched as it is a less crowded trail making you forget the long trembling hike.

Nonetheless, our 16-day Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek itinerary is well crafted, making sure that you gradually take an ascend of 400-500 meters each day without rushing out things, we will move slowly but effectively which takes care of both our well-being and let us cover every corner of the Kanchenjunga region. On top of that, we've set 2 acclimatization days before going to the higher altitudes section that helps in adjusting at the rising elevation.

Besides, our trekking guides are always there with you for assistance being medically equipped and making sure that you are okay, so there's nothing to worry about. Just set a positive mindset and engage in some sort of physically strengthening activities before you undertake this trek to Kanchenjunga.

What is the risk of Altitude Sickness during this Kanchenjunga Trek and what preventive guidelines to follow?

Altitude sickness is always one of the concerning factors when it comes to any treks crossing over 3000 meters, it doesn't matter how pro or beginner hiker, the risk of acute mountain sickness always circulates the mountain areas. As this Kanchenjunga North base Camp Trekking takes you to the highest altitude of 5143 at Pang Pema, you might get a mild/common symptom of altitude sickness due to the thinning air. During the high-elevation treks, difficulty in breathing, dehydrated feeling, and insomnia (loss of sleep and appetite) are quite common.

Meanwhile, if you aren't well prepared and follow the preventive guidelines then, there is a huge possibility of getting severe AMS like vomiting, skin paling, shaking hard, nose bleeding, and loss of control. So you might be wondering if you could get one. Well! In that case, do not worry, our expert Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek itinerary is properly planned by pro experts with a slow walking pace of covering only 9-12 km each day and doesn't exceed the 9-hour duration and high altitude ascents. Thus, the possibility of severe altitude sickness is almost zero and if things get worse (rare case), you will be evacuated by helicopter immediately.

As there is a famous saying goes by, "Prevention is always better than cure and regret", just like that, here are some of the guidelines that you must follow beforehand and throughout the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek route.

  • Please note to check your pulse rate by oximeter at every stopping point, if it shows a low oxygen level then inform the guide immediately and take a rest sparing 1-2 days more.
  • Drink at least 2-3 liters each day, if it sounds too much then try to substitute with other fluids such as hot soup, tea, noodles, and hot lemon water that will keep you warm and hydrate the body at the same time.
  • Carry dry gingers (found in marts in Thamel), or any quick snacks such as dry fruits, nuts, granola or anything that boost up your energy as there are literally 0 tea houses in between at some sections.
  • Create a diet plan mention your food habits and items that you are allergic to, and give it to the guides. They will make sure that the dishes are prepared accordingly at the tea house. (compulsory)
  • Do not rush out matching other fellow hikers walking pace. Just trail along the guide at your own pace, speeding up the hike lead to a rapid increase in heart level that leads to mountain sickness.

Best time for Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek

Knowing the ideal seasons for any expedition is crucial that can either make your trip filled with captivating joy or a total nightmare. Perfect timing not only brings top-notch views but also ensures safety. Just like that, the best time to do Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is Spring and Autumn during peak seasons, the reasons are simple; both seasons don't exceed the temperature of 20 degrees Celsius and avoid the harsh cold climate by not falling below freezing.

However, it is highly recommended to avoid the winter and off seasons making the trail more challenging to navigate due to high snowfalls. Here is a detailed overview of what Spring and Autumn have to offer:

What can you expect in spring (March to May)?

Spring is one of the best seasons to do this trek as the temperature only ranges from 5 to 15 degrees Celsius, making the route easy to proceed even in the sunlight due to less humidity. The trails are beautifully decorated by blooming rhododendrons, pines, and orchids. The day has longer hours which means we get to explore the Kanchenjunga without worrying much about darkness. Besides, as this span of the year falls right after winter, the chance of rainfall/snow is zero making the route safe and easy to undertake. That also means zero fogginess showing the breathtaking views of mountains clearly without any disturbance.

What to expect in Autumn (September to November)?

Autumn stands out being another peak season for Kanchenjunga Trekking, offering the unhindered views of snowy frosty peaks without gloominess. The temperature usually range from 10-15 degree and doesn't tend to fall below -5 degree celsius at the night time making the tea house stay cozy and warm and not to forget! doesn't drain us out due to high humidity.

On top of that, Dashain and Tihar- the main festivals of Nepal occur in between these months making us walk along the festive vibes at the Himalayas. If you are an enthusiastic hiker, who loves to seek a unique insight into the rich culture and tradition, then autumn is perfect for you!

Meals and Drinking facilities along the trail

Throughout the Kanchenjunga Trekking, you'll get proper 3 meals in a day: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner, the region offers quite a basic variety of meals or you can say limited options but filled with nutritious. Every tea house usually serves Nepalese authentic food, cooked by themselves.

Breakfast: There are different options available such as Tibetan bread, curry, chapati roti, Tibetan tea, sherpa stew, and many more. If the local meals don't suit your tastebud, then do not panic! as they also have western breakfast to cater to everyone's taste like bread served with jam and butter, eggs, oatmeal, granola, porridge, mashed potatoes, pancakes, tea, and coffee.

Lunch and Dinner: The foods are made according to your preference, with varied meal options; for instance, Thukpa, spinach dumplings, Ramen or any sort of noodles, Da Pao, Thenduk, any sort of soups, stew, veg/non-veg foods and "the ultimate Dal Bhat" that is served with rice, lentil soups, ghee, any curry, pickle and green vegetables.

Drinking facilities: As Kanchenjunga is a full remote trail, for drinking options locals serve tap water, however, it is safe to drink as it is boiled and a natural resource of water. Bottled water is available en route but costs triple the price. So, it is highly recommended to fill the water in the tea house that lasts throughout the long 5-6 hours hike. While trekking, you can drink water from water streams, tap water, and rivers but of course! with guide recommendation. Do not forget to use a "water purification tablet" (provided by us) that cleanses the water and is safe to quench your thirst.

Accommodations during the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp Trek

As Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trekking is fully a tea house trek, the lodging facilities are quite simple or you can say less developed. It is quite expected as there are fewer trekkers, unlike other popular regions like Everest Base Camp. That is why, there are only a limited no. of tea houses along the trail, that so even in the distance.

In some sections, you will find 0 lodges in between throughout the venture that define how remote this route is. Even though the lodges are simple- far away from luxurious they are cozy enough to get settled in that you will find no hassle and even an authentic livelihood.

The toilets are in eastern style and aren't attached in the room, we can only find shared bathrooms in the upper sections. In the lower region, you might get an attached washroom with single bedrooms, whereas moving to the higher areas of Kanchenjunga there are only twin bedrooms available. You will be given a comfortable mattress, pillows, cozy blankets, and two separate beds, without compromising your comfortability.

Meanwhile, some adjustments must be made for charging, hot showers, and laundry you must pay an extra $4-$5 for these services. As electric sockets aren't attached to rooms you must go dining area to recharge gadgets as they are run by satellite.

Required Permits for the Kanchenjunga Trek

The permits will be checked at the Kanchenjunga National Park while entering this restricted region, hence without Kanchenjunga base camp Trek permits the trip is impossible. The government has set 2 rules; to obtain a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP), you must apply for the permits through a registered trekking agency like Destination Himalaya Treks and Expedition and, you must have someone to trek with, excluding the guide and porter. That means two trekkers in 1 group and that doesn't count supporting trekking crews. Whatsoever, there is nothing to feel hassle about, these permits will be arranged by us after your booking is confirmed with us!

Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit: USD 20$, NPR 2000/- per person

Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit: USD 30$, NPR 3000/- per person

  6. Do not go over the board while packing, follow the rule "Pack Less but Smart". Just pack dry-fit t-shirts, pants, 6-7 pairs of socks minimum, hiking boots, slippers, down jackets, caps, sunglasses, and yes! sunscreen. Do not miss out on carrying sleeping bags as well if you are hiring a porter.
