Detailed Overview

Amphu Lapcha Pass with Mera Peak trek is the most adventurous trekking destination in Nepal which is situated in the Mahalangur Himalayan range within the Everest National Park and the Makalu Barun National Park. The peak is the highest trekking peak in Nepal allowed to be climbed by the Nepal Government under the rules and regulations of the Nepal Mountaineering Association, NMA issues the peak climbing permits as per the request of the trekking agency with trekkers' verified documents i.e. Nepal entry visa, valid passport, etc.

Amphu Lapcha Pass and climbing Mera Peak get you to the height of the Mera Peak Summit. You will have breathtaking views of 8000m mountain peaks – the world’s highest Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, and the world’s third highest mountain Kanchenjunga from its Mera Peak top.

Amphu Lapcha and Mera Peak itineraries could be managed as customized such as the Mera Peak short itinerary, the  Amphu Lapcha Pass trek with the Mera Peak expedition, classic Mera Peak route.

Mera Peak climbing with Amphu Lapcha Pass route begins from Lukla after the scenic mountain flight from Kathmandu airport. The usual route to Mera Peak is via Zatra la Pass which stands at a height of 4,704m, this classic route is steep climbing and movable stones in the trail. We need mountaineering gear and skill for this challenging pass. So we follow the route from Lukla that leads south and traverse through Paiya, Pangom, Ningsow, Chhatra Khola, and Kothe. We walk through the valley and pass Thaknak to reach Khare. Acclimatization Day over in Khare helps us with Mera Peak climbing preparation, your experienced climbing guide will teach you climbing techniques and double-check the climbing equipment. Ascending to the Mera Base Camp through past glaciers and continuing climbing to Mera Peak High Camp (5,780m/18,958ft). Start early in the morning to get to Mera Peak Summit and after summiting the peak slowly and carefully descend to Khare and trek back to Lukla.

Mera Peak climbing is considered strenuous grade as its technical section crevasses some parts en route to the summit from Base Camp.

After the summit victory of Mera Peak, our trek leads towards Amphu Lapcha Pass and Chhukung Valley. We have an option to take a rugged and strenuous trekking trail to Everest Base Camp via Kongma La Pass. The further journey from Chhukung village and traversing through Khumbu Valley, Tengboche, Namche, Manjo, and Phakding reaches us at Lukla. We will have towering views of Island Peak, Amadablam, Thamserku, and Cho Oyu meanwhile we entirely walk through the Sagarmathat National Park in this Khumbu region.

Today we follow off the beaten trekking path to Seto Pokhari. The trail goes more ascends and descends which traverse through the Honku Valley. We will pass some remote settlements while walking. We rarely meet tourists and local people along the route as this region is extremely remote and there is no reason to walk through for local people. Mt Lhotse, Nupse and Everest are tremendously visible throughout the day.

We begin another adventure day to Amphu Lapcha Bae Camp through a real remote and unexplored trekking trail. We will see a beautiful Seto Pokhari (Lake) at the end of Honku Valley.

The path goes uphill from here, we see the first glimpse of Mt Chamlang (7,321m) and glaciers in the north and south face of Chamlang. Overnight in a tented camp.

Max Altitude: 5,350m Meals: BLDAccommodation: CampingDuration: 5-6hrsDistance: 9.28km

We will have a marvelous breakfast which will be prepared by our camping crew. As we did Mera Peak climbing we don’t need acclimatization day, trekkers who do only this trek without Mera they need an acclimatization day in Amphu Lapcha Base Camp. To do this pass we may need climbing ropes, ice X and gaiters etc, we must be equipped. We will have a remarkable view of Kali Himal, Ama Dablam, Amphu Gyabjen and other regular visible peaks from Amphu Lampcha Pass. We mostly will be walking over the snow and pass crevasses. Now descending with a happy face to Chhukung.

Max Altitude: 4,750m/15,580ft Meals: BLDAccommodation: Tea HouseDuration: 7-8hrsDistance: 12km

We walked through rugged and off the beaten trekking path, so the path from Chhukung seems so easy, comfortable and wide. Chhukung village is more commercial as there are more tourists for Island Peak climbing, Pass Kongma La to reach Everest Base Camp. It’s an easy but long day through Khumbu valley and pass Tengboche village and noteworthy Tengboche monastery en route.

Max Altitude: 3,440m/11,283ft Meals: BLDAccommodation: Tea HouseDuration: 6-7hrsDistance: 26.5km

Namche bazar – Bazar means market in Nepal language, so the place is more commercial where you can buy or rent trekking or climbing gears if trekking starts at Lukla. It’s a nice town lies in Khumbu valley and surrounded by mountains.
The trail leads us through the EBC trek route by passing Monjo, Thuklala, Phakding and some local villages. We check our Everest National Park permits in the check post near Lukla. We would celebrate farewell with our trekking porter’s team whom we were with along the trip as a complete team.

Max Altitude: 2,840m/9,315ft Meals: BLDAccommodation: Tea HouseDuration: 6-7hrsDistance: 25.5km

Essential Information

Foods in Amphu lapcha Mera Peak trekking

Homely cooked foods will be available during tea house trekking, you must be lucky if they serve you fresh and locally cultivated foods and vegetables. You are suggested to have Nepali Dal Bhat but foods like noodles, potatoes, breads, Chapati, and beans are the possibilities. Nonveg meals throughout this excursion are not recommended.

We have a team to prepare food during the camping trek from Mera High Camp to Amphu Lapcha Base Camp. Camping cooks will serve hot soup, hot water, tea–coffee, cooked and boiled meals, tuna fish, etc.

Accommodation

Lodge accommodation in the Mera Peak region is reasonably fine, still, there could be room sharing among 3-4 people sometimes in high trekking season. We have to compromise with sharing toilets in some places.

There will be a camping trek from Mera High Camp to Ampu Lapcha Base Camp. High-quality tents, mattresses, and pillows for camping will be provided.
Once we reach the Khumbu region after doing the pass, we sleep in better lodges, we can even take a luxury hotel like Everest View Hotel in Syangboche and similarly in Lukla. You have to pay separately for this hotel and to be booked in advance.

Mera Peak climb with Ampu Lapcha Pass difficulty

Amphu Lapcha Pass via Mera Peak climbing difficulty is strenuously difficult because of its high altitude. The climbing is semi-technical so we just need basic mountaineering skills and sound fitness labels. This Mera Peak expedition is not the difficult as Island Peak, Pisang Peak, and Bokta Peak climbing in eastern Nepal.

Walking over past glaciers and passing some crevasses during this climb could be a bit challenging. The crevasses are not permanent, so they can disappear and appear in different spots.

This is the tallest trek peak in Nepal so there is thin air around this height, breathing can be a problem without an oxygen mask.

Trekking from Khare to Amphu Lapcha Base Camp is camping organized. This is the difficult part and there are no lodges or tea shops in between. We may require mountaineering equipment for this part. Trekking through icy trails and past crevasses is challenging. We should be practiced and essentially acclimatized to complete the trekking.

Best time for Amphu Lapcha and Mera Peak expedition

The best time for the Amphu Lapcha Pass trek with Mera Peak climbing season in Nepal is during the pre-monsoon period from April to June during spring but this can be done between September to November in the autumn season. The weather is reasonably fair with mild temperatures and clear skies during this time.

Still, the weather in Nepal Himalaya is unpredictable, it changes suddenly and a snowstorm, temperature down, and cold wind may occur during this trip. So we must be prepared for unforeseen circumstances.

High altitude sickness

It is possible to experience altitude issues in this Mera peak climbing expedition as we trek in higher lands and sleep more nights above 5000m to 6000m in height. Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the primary and common altitude sickness. High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) affects the lungs, causing them to fill with water. We must pay medical attention to this stage of sickness.

The most severe stage is High Altitude Cerebral Sickness (HACE) which causes our brain to swell. We may require emergency evacuation with immediate medical attention.

Mobile network and Internet in Amphu Lapcha Pass and Mera Peak

There are mobile networks mostly from Lukla to Mera Peak High Camp but there is no network further till Chhukung. Our guide will have a satellite telephone for this trekking period in case of emergency contact with the agency.
We suggest everyone to buy a local Nepali SIM card in Kathmandu to use in trekking as there is internet access in most places till Khare and Khumbu area from Chhukung to Lukla.
