Nar Phu Valley Trek with Annapurna Circuit Overview

One of the rugged and untouched  Nar Phu Valley Trek with Annapurna Circuit is in the Annapurna region of Nepal which opened in 2002 for trekkers. The area has restrictions to trek by The Nepal Government, so we require a special trekking permit to enter and explore this hidden valley.

The two valleys – Nar and Phu named Nar Phu off the Annapurna Circuit route is a unique trek. You have the opportunity to explore exclusive landscapes, Tibet-like people and religion, and flora fauna including majestic Himalayan vistas.

The trekking route to Nar Phu Valley with Annapurna Circuit begins from Dharapani after a long bus ride from Kathmandu. One-day walking from Dharapani reaches us at Koto which is close to Chame, the district headquarters of Manang. Traversing through rugged trails, Buddhist monasteries, thin canyons, and remote villages makes this trekking stunning.

Continue following this unexplored path to Ngawal after crossing Kang La Pass situated at the height of 5,320m/17,450ft and reach Manang. The captivating rock formation and mountain peaks above 8,000m such as Dhaulagiri (8,167m/26,788ft), Annapurna I (8,091m/26538ft), and Manaslu (8,163m/26,775) are towered views.

A rest day in Manang would be ideal after such a long distance walking and store body strength for further adventurous trekking to Muktinath-Jomsom via Thorong La Pass, or we can walk around the village or short day hiking to glacial Lake Gangapurna for leg stretching.

We catch the Annapurna Circuit trek route again at Ngawal and continue the trek to Thorong La Pass via Yak Kharka, Ledar, and Thorong Phedi-Thorong La High Camp. Some trekkers will take a route to Tilicho Lake which is the highest-located glacial lake in the world and the lake is made out of Tilicho glacier which came from Tilicho Peak. The long descent to Muktinath may make us exhausted. We stop over at Kagbeni to visit the old monastery. The Kagbeni Mustang is the gateway of the Upper Mustang trekking area. The final section of this journey is from Kagbeni Village to Jomsom.

The trip concludes after we take a scenic domestic flight to Pokhara or we can continue trekking through Birethanti – Pokhara by passing Marpha, Rupse Chhahara, Tatopani, and Ghorepani Poonhill.

Today is a very useful day for us as we have to reserve the energy and stay mentally strong for the Kang La pass expedition.

Beautifully settled farming village Nar –a bowl like valley good for cultivation such as barley, potatoes, cabbage and carrot. The local people speak “Sino Tibetan language” which is a different dialect from the rest of Manang. Overnight lodge

Max Altitude: 4,110m/13,485ft Meals: BLDAccommodation: Tea House

We start our journey early today as we try being at pass to get the sun rising. First one hour to Kangla Phedi is easy going and then it’s long and hard ascending uphill to Kang La Pass, the height of Kang La pass is 5306m/17,404ft. Panoramic views of Annapurna, Pisang Peak, Gangapurna, Lamjung Himal and many snowcapped peaks are seen from the pass.

A straight forward but steep descent is encountered down the pass as a part of the path consists of moraine and some part has grassy terrain as we move towards Ngawal and continue walking to Manang. The straight descent could be strenuous.

Max Altitude: 3,460m/11,349ft Meals: BLDAccommodation: Tea HouseDuration: 8-9hrsDistance: 15.2km

We will have a marvelous breakfast with fresh beans and coffee at the hotel and start a short hike to Gangapurna glacial lake by crossing Maryangdi river, well this river seems a little creaky now. The lake is sometimes covered with snow and frozen, which looks like an ice skating spot. We further walk towards glacier moraine which comes through Gangapurna peak to capture the picturesque view of Manang village, Tengi Manang including a rocky hill standing next to Manang.

We have a few more options to explore from Manang likewise walking around the village and walking to old Mnanang village. Or we ascend to the Lama Cave to see the panoramic Himalayan vistas in the opposite direction of Gangapurna Lake. The Lama cave is just nestled in the rocky formed hill from which you see the wide and droned like view of Manang Valley, glaciers and panoramic white Himalaya series one after another.  This Lama Cave is also known as the hundred rupees Lama Cave where a Lord Buddha blessed Lama Couple used to stay. People who visit here are supposed to contribute 100 rupees. This contribution helped them to live and keep a cave neat and clean.

Meals: BLDAccommodation: Tea House

We follow the main Annapurna trek by leaving Tilicho Base Camp and Tilicho Peak climbing route at Manang, the height of Tilicho Peak is 71,34m/23,400ft. Gradual ascent to Yak Kharka is easy going, yet we feel our breathing as we are at the high altitude. We pass through the nice tea shops during the day. Yak Kharkha is not a special village, there are only a few lodges for trekkers to stay overnight.

Max Altitude: 4,110m/13,485ft Meals: bLDAccommodation: Tea HouseDuration: 4-5hrsDistance: 10.4km

We broke through tree line vegetation from Nar Phu Village. We are walking through the stark landscape, and there is a landslide area in between and stones are falling down from the mountain, close attention is required.

The mountain deer, Himalayan Thar and Snow leopard can be seen during the day. Take a lunch at Thorong Phedi and be ready for another an hour steep climbing to reach high Camp, overnight lodge

Max Altitude: 4,925m / 3,937ft Meals: BLDAccommodation: Tea HouseDuration: 4-5hrsDistance: 7.8km

We start our journey with a cup of coffee and take a packed lunch that we had ordered last night. Take a couple of boiled warm water in thermos for the day. To reach the Thorong La Pass may not be that hard as we did Kang La a few days back and we started our today’s journey from high camp. The altitude of Thorong La Pass is 5,416/17,764ft

The Aquakang peak just above your head is towering. We explore the majestic view towards Mustang and White Mountains beyond the mustang valley. Trekking from Thorong La Pass to Muktinath could be strenuous for those who has problem with knee or ankle as it’s long way down.

Whilst descending we will have picturesque landscape towards Mustang area, Kali Gandaki valley and many white Himalaya peaks in the border of Nepal and Tibet.
Once reaching Phedi, we can have a cup of tea or coffee with come snacks and we follow the rugged and rocky path to Muktinath temple. This temple is reflective religious significance for Hindus and Buddhist both. We will have a lunch break at Muktinath and take a local jeep sharing to Jomsom through Kagbeni village along the Kali Gandaki River, overnight at lodge.

During this flight we can see the towering Himalayan peaks such as Annapurna and its series, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, Tukuche Peak, Lamjung Himal, Fishtail and many more snow-captured white peaks. Flying over the world's deepest gorge in Larjung Village and massive Dhaulagiri glacier view through the window is tremendous looking. Landing in Pokhra and transferring to a hotel.

Essential Information

Nar Phu Valley and Annapurna Circuit trekking Difficulty

This Nar Phu trekking is challenging as it is walking over high altitude and trek duration. The trek involves many ascents and descents through the rocky and sometimes snowy paths. Some parts of the trail are small – narrow, exposed, and slippery on the approach to the high passes, so the trekkers must have sound physical fitness and be trained for alpine adjustment. This trip is recommended for professional backpackers.

Best Time to do Nar Phu Valley with Annapurna Circuit

The best time for this trek is pre-monsoon season, March to May, and post-monsoon season, September to November. Yet the very best month is May in spring and 2nd session of October till half of November.

In general, the weather is fair without air pollution and clear skies. The mild temperature during this time is advantageous for trekking. But we never know the weather in Nepal Himalaya, it’s unpredictable. Snow storms, freezing cold winds, and invisibility may occur in the meantime. So we must be prepared for these challenges.

Foods and accommodation in Nar Phu Valley Annapurna Circuit

The entire trekking is lodge-based. Basic lodges are available in the Nar Phu area. Some places have toilets outside the building and sharing. Mostly we get twin sharing but we have to be ready to share the room with more in peak trekking season. We will get a moderately better room in the Annapurna circuit root from Manang. Meals in the Annapurna area are more commercial like steak, western, and continental cuisines either, but you can get local Nepali foods for sure.

As long as you are in Nar Phu Valley, you get organic foods that are cultivated by local farmers. Fresh vegetable and Nepali meal Dal Bhat is most recommended

Altitude sickness

This Nar Phu trek is included with two high passes Kang La Pass and Thorong La Pass. High altitude sickness may occur, so proper acclimatization is needed. The itinerary and pace for this excursion are properly composed.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is the mildest and most common altitude sickness. High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) affects the lungs filled with water. We must pay medical attention to this stage of sickness. The most severe stage is High Altitude Cerebral Sickness (HACE) which causes our brain to swell. We may require emergency evacuation with immediate medical attention.

Communication and internet

Communication and internet facilities in the Nar Phu area are not reachable. But we can get signals for the Nepal telecom network and NCELL network sometimes.

When we join the Annapurna trekking route and then there is no problem calling or using internet data, it’s easily available but a little costly to buy data packs.

What permits are required for Nar Phu Valley with Annapurna Circuit Trekking?

Nar Phu entry special permit: We proceed with your valid original (no photocopy) passport and Nepal’s visa validity

ACAP Permit: Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit which is provided by Nepal Tourism Board

TIMS permit: Trekker’s Information Management System permit which will be provided by the Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) is mandatory.
