Max Altitude: 1360 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: 4 star hotel

We will begin the day by having breakfast before taking our short 25 to 30-minute flight to Pokhara. While flying we observe breathtaking Himalayan views with three major snowcapped ranges Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu visible during the journey.  We continue our journey by jeep from Pokhara until we reach Dhampus at its 31km distance. Traveling for 45 minutes leads us to Dhampus which sits at the edge of the Annapurna Conservation Area.

Our journey passes through beautiful hilly landscapes, terraced fields typical Nepalese villages. Our Mardi Himal trek begins after we ascend Dhampus where we walk along a gentle slope through rhododendron forests as we pass fields and several small settlements. Our journey covers a 4km distance while we witness the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhare peak through the trail. After reaching here, we'll do a short uphill walk to, Australian Camp which is just a 1.5-hour uphill walk, from where the fascinating views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Range can be seen with some tents set here and the famous swing. After relishing here, we'll return to Dhampus village and have our lunch.

Then we'll continue our trek to Pothana, a small village surrounded by forests located in the heart of Annapurna Conservation Area. It is a peaceful village with basic teahouses with stunning views of the Annapurna range, making it a perfect stop to spend the night.

Max Altitude: 1930 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 6-7 hours

Afterward, We begin our journey by walking along a stone trail that leads us into thick forests containing rhododendrons and oak trees. First, we reach the small village of Pitam Deralli where you will see a holy Hindu Temple where locals leave offerings for safe travel through the mountains.

This mardi Himal Trekking path leads us to Deurali after departing from the main Annapurna trail while entering thick forests. Springtime transforms the path into a stunning display of red pink and white flowers of rhododendron. The Annapurna and Machhapuchhre ranges occasionally become visible to our eyes while climbing to the northern slopes.

We reach Forest camp after a 2-3 hours hike with beautiful scenery of nature.  Forest camp is a small settlement surrounded by forests with a peaceful environment and few teahouses. It is also called Kokar meaning “remains of trees hit by lightning” and it is often covered in mist and cloud creating a unique experience.  Enjoying the views of Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, and Dhaulagiri we spend the night in a local teahouse.

Max Altitude: 2530 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5-6 hoursDistance: 10km

We make our way uphill into the dense subtropical forest approaching the alpine region. During the hike, we pass through many ridges and moss-covered trees with the occasional sight of terraced fields of Tokla and Landruk villages in the Modi Khola Valley. With cool shading of rhododendron and oak trees, and the soothing sound of birds and streams we reach the magical ridge called Low Camp at noon.

Low camp is also called “Badal Danda”  or “Cloud Hill” as it is covered in clouds and mist almost all the time. Here we can enjoy swaying on a swing made of bamboo as we look over the Himalayas that surround us. With a simple dinner and a beautiful night sky, we call it a day!

Max Altitude: 2982 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5 hoursDistance: 10km

Today as we get closer to the alpine zone, the vegetation gets sparser with short shrubs and trees with rugged rocky terrain. As the dense forest becomes behind us we notice the ridges fading and begin to see distant valleys and frosty mountains emerging. Moving forward, the Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre, and Annapurna ranges can become more noticeable and clearer.

The attitude rises as we move forward and the surrounding view becomes more beautiful. If we are lucky, we can spot Danphe, the national bird of Nepal. We pass the Middle camp for lunch before the final stretch to the High camp which gets steeper and more difficult. The altitude gain becomes noticeable with colder temperatures so after reaching High camp we warm ourselves sitting around the firing woodland in the dining area of our teahouse.

Max Altitude: 3567 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 4-5 hoursDistance: 5km

Our hike to the most challenging and rewarding highlight of the trek starts early in the morning. Since it takes us 5-6 hours to make a round trip to Mardi Himal Base camp, we pack our breakfast. The trail ascends uphill with a steep uneven path and can be slippery if it is covered in snow, creating a challenge for us.

We reach the viewpoint just in time to catch a beautiful 360 sunrise view of Annapurna South and Annapurna II and the ultimate show-stopper, Mardi Himal with Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) mountain up close. After taking in the beautiful views of snowcapped mountains and deep valleys in golden sunrise, we make our way back to High Camp. Since it is our final day in the Annapurna region, we enjoy our time to the fullest.

Max Altitude: 4510 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5-6hoursDistance: 8km

We take an alternative route to the east from High Camp making a downhill descent towards Siding Village. Passing through rhododendrons and oak forests, we can see the distant mountains and valleys before reaching low camp. After 2-3 hours, we reach Siding which is a small peaceful settlement of Gurung and Magar people as we can witness an old tradition of Gurung locals called “Rodhi” where young people gather to sing folk songs. The route takes us through Kalimati and Ghalel village before reaching the road head at Lumre.

Taking a local jeep, we can see diverse landscapes with hills, agricultural farms, and graced fields along the Modi Khola River valley. After 2 hours ride, we reached Pokhara where we can relax by the Phewa lake looking over Machhapuchre on the horizon.

Max Altitude: 822 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: 4 star hotelDuration: 8-9 hoursDistance: 52km

The return trip to Kathmandu starts after finishing our breakfast as we take the sofa bus ride. The 8-9 hours ride takes us through hills, canyons, and local villages following the Prithivi Highway while the Trisuli River flows by our side.  The route passes through Damauli, Mugling, and Naubise before we can enter the bustling city of Kathmandu, visible from Thankot.

Upon reaching Kathmandu, we can chek up in our hotel for a quick rest after a long journey.  We organize a farewell dinner followed by distributing trip completion certificates before concluding our evening. Later, we will visit Thamel to shop for local handicrafts or to enjoy the night atmosphere.

Mardi Himal Trek Distance

According to the distance, the Mardi Himal trek covers a distance of 57 to 70 km, coming back and forth for the route and side trails chosen. You are going to walk for about 5 to 7 hours a day. There are short days, there is less uphill climbing, and other days that are long with more uphill climbing. As there are several trailheads and starting points, the total distance simply depends on how your itinerary has been set, or whether it is combined with any other treks within this region, or not, which individuals usually opt for.

Starting from Kathmandu to Mardi Himal Base Camp - 4500 meters, the route demands at least 1 week of hiking if you are a pro hiker; otherwise, with gradual ascent, it requires 9 complete days following the route of Deurali- Forest Camp-High Camp- Base Camp and descends to Badal danda and Siding after taking a drive from Pokhara.

Meanwhile, if you are starting the Mardi Trek from Pokhara, then the distance is relatively low, comprising only 31 km from Kande, or Pitam Deurali, which can be completed within 5 days, in a slow, moderate pace. To cover every highlighted aspect, this trek is set for 9 days, which blends the fusion of local cultural encounters, diverse fauna and flora of rhododendrons, and clear views of mountains and landscapes through a distinct perspective. To know more in-depth, you can take a deep dive into our new blog entitled: Mardi Himal Trekking distance and elevation.

Best Time for Mardi Himal Trek

No matter how easy or short the adventure you are opting for, knowing the ideal seasons always plays a huge role in making your trip simply rewarding, comfortable, and to be prepared accordingly. Just like that, the peak and ideal seasons for the Mardi Himal Trek are Spring and Autumn, as during these span of the year, the temperature is generally mild, and weather is clean offering an optimal season to venture out for long expedition with the undisturbed views of the mountains and landscapes at the same.

Meanwhile, this trek to Mardi Himal can also be done in the other two seasons of monsoon and winter, if the seasonal times don't fit your holiday duration. However, there are ample preparations that are compulsory to do beforehand, and appropriately packing the gear, while it might sound a bit challenging to complete this trek, with proper guidance, it can be successfully done undoubtedly. Every four season has something distinct and captivating view to offer you, hence, no matter what season you basically heading to this journey for, it will surely reward you with breathtaking panorama of highlands and a unique perspective of landscapes.

Perks of Spring: March to May -  What to Expect?

Spring stands out to be one of the finest seasons for the Mardi Himal Trekking, as the temperature doesn't go beyond 12 degrees Celsius, so you can expect a mild climatic condition with a spark of chill cold weather, making the hike easy to begin with. As this season comes after just the end of winter, if you are a snow lover and want to build a snowman in Mardi Himal View Point, then from the beginning to mid-May, one can still feel the crisp of winter, but yes, with clear trailheads. Well! But this is not the end yet! One of the enchantments about making our way to the Mardi Himal is that, as this trek comprises several forested sections, the whole pathway is covered with red, pink rhododendrons and white orchids that bloom just right in front of the clear views of mountains and landscapes making it one of the loved sealsn amongst all.

Why Autumn (August to October)?

Autumn tends to be another season for the Mardi Trek in Nepal, perfect for cultural enthusiasts and for someone who loves to thrive with other fellow hikers, cracking jokes and boasting at festivals. As this season comes after the end of the high precipitation monsoon, the weather gets clear with a high chance of no rainfall throughout the Annapurna region, offering safe ascent. Besides, the major festivals - Dashain and Tihar fall in this timeframe - Sep to Oct, so you have a perfect opportunity to gain a cultural insight with the undisturbed view of the Himalayas and six climatic zones here.

What to expect in winter and monsoon?

To be honest, trekking to Mardi Himal Base Camp during monsoon is not highly suggested, as, due to the rainfall, the simple route becomes completely a nightmare to complete due to the slippery sections. As this trek begins right after a drive through a forest camp, dense forested section, in monsoon, the trails are muddy, slippery, and completely hassle to navigate with disturbing leeches en route. Whereas, you can complete the Mardi Himal Trekking in winter, if you are prepared well enough and have some experience of high-altitude treks. Just be mindful of booking the rooms before 1 month, as many areas remain closed due to snow blockage. Even though trekking in winter might sound like a hassle, the peaks covered with snow and the forest decorated with snowflakes will surely reward your efforts, giving a sense of accomplishment.

Nonetheless, despite the season of the year, making sure you explore the best out of this trek, we at Destination Himalaya Treks arrange treks at any time of the year!

Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty

Even though this trek reaches an altitude of 4500 meters, the trek to Mardi Himal falls under easy to moderate treks in Nepal that open the gate to any age group, beginners, and pro hikers. Trekking the entire route spans 40-45 kilometers during 5-7 actual days of hiking. The daily hiking duration lasts between four to seven hours throughout the trek, while elevation gains increase from 500 to 900 meters on the toughest days.

The overall Mardi Trek difficulty level rises from Low Camp to Base Camp due to its steep and rocky terrain. While making our way through Forest Camp to High Camp, the trail passes by thin ridge sections along the side landscape. But, there's nothing to worry about as it has poles set to walk by carefully while making our way uphill.

Essential Tips for Mardi Himal Trek in Nepal (ATMs, Preparation, Communication, Drinking Water)

  • Make sure to bring filtered water bottles and water purification tablets to enjoy safe drinking water in the mountains without creating plastic waste.
  • Start preparing your body 6-8 weeks before the Mardi Trek with stair climbing, hiking nearby hills, swimming, and cycling to increase your strength and endurance.
  • En route, try to consume hot fluids like sherpa stew or garlic soup that help you to warm up the body and avoid the coldness that could potentially lead to altitude sickness.
  • The daily intake of 3-4 liters of water maintains proper hydration because it enables better adaptation to altitude changes and prevents headaches that may occur at higher elevations.
  • Withdraw sufficient Nepali rupees from banks in Kathmandu or Pokhara ahead of your trek because ATMs are not available during the trek.
  • Get a local SIM card from Ncell or NTC in Kathmandu or Pokhara to use during emergencies, as these providers supply sufficient network coverage throughout the trek.
  • Use a power bank to recharge your devices because electricity is minimal at higher elevations. The teahouses will charge you extra for electricity usage.
