Immerse yourself in the adventure that passes through the protected forested area to the lush vegetation of terraced fields of locals where the yaks and blue sheep are grazing stunningly in alpine meadows, and finally to the wetland of Rara Lake showing the six climatic zones and Tibetan Buddhist culture of the Himalayas within just 12 days.

Detailed Overview

Located in the Far Western region of Nepal, This trek to Rara Lake is an enchanting journey that lets us cover the two remote trails of Jumla and Mugu districts within the Karnali Province that connect many other remote trails as well such as Upper Dolpo and The Great Himalayan Trail. So, one can imagine how off-the-beaten adventure this Rara Lake Trek undertakes that shows us the isolated and rugged terrains of the Himalayas and ascends to the pristine deepest, and largest freshwater lake of Rara Lake- 2980 meters surrounded by the pine trees where the reflection of mountains, green hills, and trout fish can be seen clearly.

This Rara Lake Trek meanders us through the Rara National Park bypassing the forested area of blooming forests adorned with pines, oaks, and rhododendrons showing the thriving colors of this conservation area. Birdwatchers! Are you ready to take a glance at the Himalayan Danfe- Nepal's National Bird and Black Throated Sun Bird showing their beauty? YES! This protected area is a habitat of more than 200 bird species making our journey to Rara Lake also known as Queen of Lakes, filled with the soothing chirping sound of wild birds.

The latter half of our Rara Lake Trekking touches the Jumla district after two short flights from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj and Jumla, then traverses through many ancient villages such as Chere Chaur, Chela Chaur via crossing over the Jaljala Pass (3580 meters) the highest altitude of this trek.

Afterward, it leads to the famous "Sinja Valley", the former capital city of the Khasa Kingdom surrounded by ancient forts, temples, and cliffs engraved with details of histories that were dug and discovered by archaeologists of Cambridge. Exploring around this valley, we get to connect with the Royal Thakuris and Khasa communities showing their culture in the form of arts, dances, traditional attires, and wood craftmanship promising to transport us to their ancient era.

In the second half, our adventure to Rara Lake of Nepal covers the Mugu district rightly after entering the Goru Singhe takes us to the Rara Lake that drains to Karnali River and flows through the Bardia National Park. Reaching the Murdi View Point, we get to see Lake Rara beautifully changing its oasis in time with the backdrop views of Kanjiroba Himal, Chucchemara Peak, and Rama and Malika Kand making our trek one hundred percent worth it to the vantage point.

To sum up, this trek is an enchanting journey filled with a serene environment with less footprint of locals, where you can have an escape away from the busy life and mingle with locals of Mugu and Jumla. Surprisingly! even though this trip crosses an elevation of over 3000 meters, it doesn't demand any prior experience that beginners or families along with children can easily undertake.

What makes this trek to Rara Lake a must-do adventure?

This Rara Lake Trekking navigates through mainly the forested area of diverse flora and fauna and transports us to many hamlets surrounded by small mani walls, chortens, and Buddhist monasteries showing a varied bio and ecosystem of this side of the Himalayas.

However, while we might perceive this trek solely as the best views and the serene Lake Rara, there's much more than that which makes this trek special and worth the penny:

Experience the Off-Beaten Path Tea House Trek of Mid-Western

Located 650 km far away from Kathmandu, this 12-day Rara Lake trekking leads us to the Mugu District by touching the half section of the Jumla district through the less crowded trails and rugged terrains. Unlike any other popular treks that go around the media like Everest Base Camp or Langtang Valley Trek, this hidden gem of Mid-Western Nepal remains untamed with only a few hikers along the trail allowing us to have a "ME" time and connect with nature.

The best part is! this Rara Lake Trek is a tea house expedition all along the way, where we'll be settled in the middle of cattle farms, pristine lakes, old aged remote village made out of woods and stones, in the middle of a forested area with chirping sounds of birds with blue sheep and yaks echoing throughout the valley. While it might sound like a new experience, but becomes everyone's favorite that meets no fancy lodges.

Just imagine walking past the landscapes, and ancient hamlets so far away from the busy modernized life enjoying the captivating views of the diverse Himalayan Range, and experiencing the authenticness, and rawness of the trail that remains the same as the 1980s era, WELL! This is our journey from Kathmandu to Rara Lake filled with serenity that detached us from the city lifestyle and connects us with the simple lifestyle of locals.

Exploring Rara National Park: A Nature Sanctuary

Established in the year 2007 AD, Rara National Park covers the two districts of Jumla and Mugu stretching widely by 106 square kilometers holding its name being the home of diverse landscapes, mountains, Himalayan flora, and fauna where Indigenous locals reside. Starting our trek from the lush forests of blooming rhododendrons, pines, oaks, and orchids with an insight of langur monkeys playing here and there, Deers, Himalayan tahr, or maybe even the elusive red panda (if luck is in our favor).

To the midpoint of landscapes widely opening up with settlements of Malla Thakuri, and Khasa communities where yaks are grazing on the terraced fields and the Himalayan mules transporting the goods and finally, to the wetlands of Lake Rara, this Rara Lake Trek shows us a gradual transition of green meadows to alpine valleys within this conservation area of Rara National Park.

Sinja Village: A Heart of Khasa Culture

During our 12-day journey to Rara Lake of Nepal, as we cover the Jumla district as well, we'll get to immerse ourselves in the rich culture of Khasa locals. While staying a day at Sinja village, we get to capture a unique tapestry of Tibetan Buddhist culture. Sinja Village is a former capital of the Khasa Kingdom surrounded by a valley of ancient architecture, monasteries, and small stones engraved in Tibetan mantras.

It is also said that the Nepali language "Devanagari script" was formed here, the living proofs are the cliffs engraved by the Nepali language in the 13th century. Khasa kings ruled this place till the 14th century before the unification done by the Prithvi Narayan Shah while exploring this village, we'll get an educative and exceptional looking-after temple, settlements, and courtyards that were uncovered by the archeologist.

Still relishing ourselves in this Khasa community, taking a glance over their traditional attire, songs, dances, and architectural talent of weaving, pottery, craftmanship, and thangka paintings connect us with them even more making our trek filled with cultural immersion.

Rara Lake: An Oasis of Shifting Colors

Rara Lake stands out being one of the major highlights of our trek that changes its colors depending on the weather, and climatic conditions which is fully surrounded by juniper trees, green hills, and mountains. This Rara Lake is the deepest lake and largest fresh water in Nepal covering 10.8 km with 167 meters.

While attaining here, we can engage in boating at this pristine blue lake witnessing the trout fish in the crystal clear lake. The defining moment would be seeing a reflection of Kanjiroba Himal while gazing at this lake. We can even do horse riding here, however as we highly believe in no rides at all (animal harm), we can just feed them and take pictures with them in the backdrop of the lake area which would undoubtedly be a more memorable moment through our Rara Lake Trek.

Essential Information

Best time to visit Rara Lake

For the Rara Lake Trek, the ideal seasons are Spring and Autumn as the mild temperature and climate blend perfectly together throughout the journey making the trail safe, easy, and of course! filled with captivating unhindered views.

Meanwhile, this trek to Rara Lake in winter and monsoon is highly not suggested as during this span of the year, it brings heavy precipitation (rainfall/snowfall) making our trek a total nightmare with many challenges. However, pro hikers can conveniently take on this exploration during these off-seasons with some guidelines and a planned itinerary.

What to expect in Spring (March to May)?

There is no doubt, that Spring tends to stand out being one of the best seasons for every hiking and expedition as the temperate blends perfectly with the climatic conditions ranging from 5 to 15 degrees Celsius. It serves as a perfect time, to start the hike for many hours without feeling too sweaty and mentally drained due to high humidity. The lower trails are stunningly covered with lush rhododendron forests and pine trees making the trail vibrant with blooming wildflowers.

Usually, Many enthusiastic hikers prefer this span of the year, as winter just comes to an end which means the surroundings of the coldness are still there en route providing a fresh breeze air while making our way through challenging terrain. The pathway is less crowded than in Autumn (another peak season), which means we can trail along the far western region having a "ME" time and interacting with locals with the top-notch clear views of mountains.

What to expect in Autumn (September to November)?

Autumn is also highly regarded as the best time to do the Rara Lake Trekking, the reason is simple. The temperature rises from 15 to 25 degrees Celsius in the daytime and falls to -4 degrees Celsius only at night time in higher elevations after crossing Sinja Valley (3050 meters). It is also the period of harvesting season in Nepal, where we could get a unique insight into locals engaging in terraced farms of millets, wheat, rice, and many others.

Besides, the main festival of Dashain and Tihar falls in between October offering a great chance to explore the rich culture and traditions of how Himalayan people celebrate their festivals. If you are someone who loves to seek something new and educative then, this season of Autumn fits perfectly for you.

How difficult is Rara Lake Trek?

Undertaking any treks in an isolated area is surely not an easy task especially when we are opting for high-altitude treks over 3000 meters. Surprisingly, Rara Lake Trek is one of the moderate treks to undertake, it demands 5-6 hours of hiking each day covering approximately 10-12 km distance depending on the route. Even though this hike falls under the easygoing category, if you are a beginner then, you must do some preparations beforehand.

This trekking touches the two districts of Nepal, firstly the Jumla and secondly Mugu, the starting section goes through the easy pathway, and the most challenging terrain would be crossing over Jaljala Pass (3580 meters).

There are some trails, that pass through the rugged, remote, and unpaved routes at high altitudes, which make beginners feel like difficulty in breathing or leg trembling situations. That is why, prior prep must be done to build up the physical strength, and YES! create a strong mindset to settle in at the remote trails where modern amenities are limited. Other than that, this journey isn't so strenuous to undertake that we highly recommend this trip to newcomers.

If you are quite worried about altitude sickness, then do not be! our planned 12-day Rara Lake Trekking itinerary is set by our expert teams with a gradual ascent of only 400 to 500 M each day that avoids the risk of altitude sickness and explores the best out of these two districts in 1 go. Physical Strength

Even though this trek is not so challenging compared to other circuit treks in Nepal, building some stamina will make your trip so much easier and prepare you for unfortunate challenges like sudden weather changes. For that, there's nothing to overdo, just engage in some sort of exercise like running, small hikes of 4-5 hours to get used to high altitudes, cycling, or you can just do some weight training beforehand.

Or if that doesn't match your preference then, you can just do ups and downs by the staircase or do a small ramble in the park or treadmill completing the 10,000 steps. Remember that, your stamina and well-being are one of the important aspect that plays a great role in making your trip even more fruitful.

Mental Preparation

As this Rara Lake Trek goes all the way through the remote sections of western Nepal, you must know how the cultures are there, how they live their life in remote terrains or you can say how limited the amenities are En route. Do some research, if you are planning this trip of the local people's culture and expect accordingly (a not-so-luxury infrastructure) to avoid the cultural shock.

There is a famous line that goes by, "Anything becomes much easier with a positive mindset and enthusiasm", focus on 3 things: PERSEVERANCE, PERSISTENCE, and of course! CONSISTENCY. Engage in some sort of yoga, meditation, or pilates to build up a peaceful and calm mind, which helps you to enjoy the serene environment along the Rara Lake Trek route and connect with nature.
