What makes this trek to Rara Lake a must-do adventure?
This Rara Lake Trekking navigates through mainly the forested area of diverse flora and fauna and transports us to many hamlets surrounded by small mani walls, chortens, and Buddhist monasteries showing a varied bio and ecosystem of this side of the Himalayas.
However, while we might perceive this trek solely as the best views and the serene Lake Rara, there's much more than that which makes this trek special and worth the penny:
Experience the Off-Beaten Path Tea House Trek of Mid-Western
Located 650 km far away from Kathmandu, this 12-day Rara Lake trekking leads us to the Mugu District by touching the half section of the Jumla district through the less crowded trails and rugged terrains. Unlike any other popular treks that go around the media like Everest Base Camp or Langtang Valley Trek, this hidden gem of Mid-Western Nepal remains untamed with only a few hikers along the trail allowing us to have a "ME" time and connect with nature.
The best part is! this Rara Lake Trek is a tea house expedition all along the way, where we'll be settled in the middle of cattle farms, pristine lakes, old aged remote village made out of woods and stones, in the middle of a forested area with chirping sounds of birds with blue sheep and yaks echoing throughout the valley. While it might sound like a new experience, but becomes everyone's favorite that meets no fancy lodges.
Just imagine walking past the landscapes, and ancient hamlets so far away from the busy modernized life enjoying the captivating views of the diverse Himalayan Range, and experiencing the authenticness, and rawness of the trail that remains the same as the 1980s era, WELL! This is our journey from Kathmandu to Rara Lake filled with serenity that detached us from the city lifestyle and connects us with the simple lifestyle of locals.
Exploring Rara National Park: A Nature Sanctuary
Established in the year 2007 AD, Rara National Park covers the two districts of Jumla and Mugu stretching widely by 106 square kilometers holding its name being the home of diverse landscapes, mountains, Himalayan flora, and fauna where Indigenous locals reside. Starting our trek from the lush forests of blooming rhododendrons, pines, oaks, and orchids with an insight of langur monkeys playing here and there, Deers, Himalayan tahr, or maybe even the elusive red panda (if luck is in our favor).
To the midpoint of landscapes widely opening up with settlements of Malla Thakuri, and Khasa communities where yaks are grazing on the terraced fields and the Himalayan mules transporting the goods and finally, to the wetlands of Lake Rara, this Rara Lake Trek shows us a gradual transition of green meadows to alpine valleys within this conservation area of Rara National Park.
Sinja Village: A Heart of Khasa Culture
During our 12-day journey to Rara Lake of Nepal, as we cover the Jumla district as well, we'll get to immerse ourselves in the rich culture of Khasa locals. While staying a day at Sinja village, we get to capture a unique tapestry of Tibetan Buddhist culture. Sinja Village is a former capital of the Khasa Kingdom surrounded by a valley of ancient architecture, monasteries, and small stones engraved in Tibetan mantras.
It is also said that the Nepali language "Devanagari script" was formed here, the living proofs are the cliffs engraved by the Nepali language in the 13th century. Khasa kings ruled this place till the 14th century before the unification done by the Prithvi Narayan Shah while exploring this village, we'll get an educative and exceptional looking-after temple, settlements, and courtyards that were uncovered by the archeologist.
Still relishing ourselves in this Khasa community, taking a glance over their traditional attire, songs, dances, and architectural talent of weaving, pottery, craftmanship, and thangka paintings connect us with them even more making our trek filled with cultural immersion.
Rara Lake: An Oasis of Shifting Colors
Rara Lake stands out being one of the major highlights of our trek that changes its colors depending on the weather, and climatic conditions which is fully surrounded by juniper trees, green hills, and mountains. This Rara Lake is the deepest lake and largest fresh water in Nepal covering 10.8 km with 167 meters.
While attaining here, we can engage in boating at this pristine blue lake witnessing the trout fish in the crystal clear lake. The defining moment would be seeing a reflection of Kanjiroba Himal while gazing at this lake. We can even do horse riding here, however as we highly believe in no rides at all (animal harm), we can just feed them and take pictures with them in the backdrop of the lake area which would undoubtedly be a more memorable moment through our Rara Lake Trek.
