It is said that art can never be merely expressed, only felt. In that spirit, far away in the Himalayas, there exists a remote land said to be frozen in its ancient era, a place so mysterious it doesn’t even appear on most maps. A living museum where the chants of monks wind in the air coming from ancient monasteries, with the prayer flags flagging with their tone and Himalayan yaks jiggling their bells, adding a hypnotic effect to nature.

This is the Upper Dolpo region of Nepal, isolated by the Tibetan plateau and the Dhaulagiri range, where the Tibetan Buddhist culture of the historic Bon community resides peacefully, unbothered by the modern world.

Detailed Overview

Located in the northwestern part of Nepal, Upper Dolpo Trek takes you to explore the isolated, pristine, remote rugged trail region. The towering diverse landscapes and the rich tapestry of Tibetan culture tend to surprise you in every admirable possible way. Initiated back in the year 1992, the Upper Dolpo remains the least explored territory with a smaller number of footprints as special permits are required for this trek. Surrounded by the iconic Himalayan peaks of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Kanjirowa, this 27-day Upper Dolpo Trekking also stretches to Lower Dolpo, referred to as “Ba yul”- The Hidden Land so one can imagine how vibrant authenticity this territory holds.

The Dolpo region was undiscovered until 1999, the real game changer for it began when the movie "Himalayan" known as "Caravan" was released by Eric Valli demonstrating the disguised beauty, hardships, challenges, and traditions of the Bon community residing here. Since then, many enthusiastic trekkers have been captivated to explore the wilderness area. Ever heard of Yarsagumba-The Himalayan Gold that holds thousands of dollars in market value in a foreign market? Well! At the Upper Dolpo trail, you will get to witness the locals traditional farming of harvesting yarsagumba and engaging in animal husbandry process showcasing their way of livelihood in such remote terrain.

Starting from a small aircraft to Juphal via Nepalgunj and passing through diverse settlements such as Dunai, Aankhe, and Sulighat surrounded by the lush forest of oak and pine, cascading waterfalls, and river streams the trail leads us to Shey Phoksundo Lake considered as the deepest lake in Nepal. Spending our most days in the proximity of lakes with the soothing sound of flowing rivers and the chirping sounds of birds, we'll head over to Sallaghari and Phoksundo Bhanjyang that ascends us to the top of Kang La Pass (5306 m), Nangda La Pass (5535 m) and Shey Gompa (4130 m) where the spectacular views of Chhamlang Peak 6 (6737m), and Peak 7 (6107m) tend to accompany us in every step.

Wandering around "Shey Gompa" the heart of Dolpo, we can feel the serenity at its best where the houses are adorned with red shrines, monasteries are decorated with small mani walls, chortens, colorful prayer flags, thangka paintings that surely transport you back somewhere in 90's era. Here, resides the famous "Shey Monastery" said to be 800 years old in the intersection between 2 rivers of Kangju Nala and Yeju Nala, rising highly near the holy Crystal Mountain adding a sense of realm and profound connection with this side of the world. Then, we pass through other high passes of Saldang La (5029) and Jyanta La (4970 m). In total, we'll cross over 5 high altitude passes with 3 exceeding the height of 5000 meters, offering a kick of accomplishment to our adventurous journey.

On the following days, we'll traverse through several villages such as Namduna Gaon, Saldang, Sibu, Tokyu, Dho Tarap, Tarapkhola, Khani Gaon,Tarakot exploring many ancient monasteries of Tsakang Gompa, Namgung Gompa, Chharka Gompa and Tashigang rewarding ourselves with the bon culture and spiritual practices of ancient Tibetans passing down from generations that still remain unchanged.

What makes this trek to the Upper Dolpo special?

In short, this expedition to the Dolpo is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to truly explore how life is supposed to be if it weren't influenced by the modern world. It isn't just a journey about reaching the expedition but every single step here feels like a magical world.

A part of the Himalayas where the smiley faces of Tibetan kids fascinate you more than tall peaks, where the territory is separated by huge Himalayan thunders and the villages that are like art displayed in the museums, that's what makes this place truly special and stand out amongst all.

Camping Trek- Exploring remote, authentic, and unique adventure

“Upper Dolpo” is a hidden treasure in western Nepal where there are zero signs of any modern-influenced amenities and also quite less amount of tea house encounters in between. Just imagine residing at a tent camp in the corner of dramatic diverse landscapes sometimes in the deep valleys, yak hazards terraced fields, deep valleys, and the sparkling turquoise lakes including the Phoksundo Lake with a cozy warm campfire. Well! This is where the authenticity and remoteness of this trek genuinely hits you.

Yes! The tented camping is not a 5-star experience with luxury amenities or dining in Paris but you know what? The soothing air, the smell of cattle farms, the charming villages in between, and our home for 23 days with the homely cooked foods by the local chefs at a campsite relishing the serenity of nature, is a paradise experience in the middle of the Himalayas. No other expedition can ever meet this undiscovered route of the Himalayas, being far away from the crowded busy life and advanced comforts is what makes this trek a profound journey to connect yourself with nature and disconnect with the strongly impacted modern life.

Discovering the wilderness of Shey Phoksundo National Park

Established at the year 1984, covering two major districts of Dolpa and Mugu in western Nepal Shey Phoksundo National Park ranges its elevation from 2130 m/6995 ft to over 6880 m/22570 ft holding its name of being the largest national park of Nepal with an expansion of 3555 sq km. It is named for its two prominent attributes; Shey stands for “Shey Gompa” established in the 11th century within the premises which is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries and “Phoskundo” titled for the deepest Phoksundo Lake of Nepal.

From rugged terrains, deep valleys carved in varied landscapes, alpine meadows with blooming flowers in spring, and dense forests of oak, pine, and fir to iconic mountain ranges of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs, this park encompasses six distinct climatic zones due to its diverse topography and rich ecosystem. Besides that, do you know that the Shey Phoksundo National Park is also home to over 200 wildlife including the 29 notable mammals? You heard it right! While walking along the trail, you have a chance to encounter several species such as musk deer, snow leopard, blue sheep (chyangra), and elusive red panda, and also get ready to be hypnotized by the glamour of "Himalayan monal" (Danfe) - Nepal's national bird that is found here. Hence, with elusive wildlife, you can imagine how rich and valuable this small piece of conservation land on earth holds making our trail filled with calmness in the residents of innocent creatures and vibrant flora.

Interesting Update: In the year 2025, 90 snow leopards were recorded inside the national park of Shey Phoksundo and 120 in total within the Dolpo region which is the highest till now.

The Sacred Beauty of Phoksundo Lake

Ever heard of a lake that changes its shade of emerald-like green and turquoise blue depending on the time and weather conditions? Located at 3612 meters in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, holding pristineness and undiscovered due to its restricted permits. Well! This is Phoksundo Lake, recognized as Nepal's deepest lake with a depth of 145 meters. Till now, there has been zero aquatic life found here due to its highly situated elevation.

Until the mid-20th century, this hidden gem was a secret and highly preserved by the Tibetan and Bon local communities. After the book “The Snow Leopard” was published by the American author Peter Matthiessen where he mentioned the disguised beauty of Phoskundo Lake in Chapter 12, signifying the inner peace one could get after glancing at it, and the sacredness attached to the local communities, many people across the globe got it’s attention and came just to feel a lively connection with it.

Still, this Phoksundo Lake is highly worshipped by local communities where 20 ancient monasteries reside near the lake and it is said that “Taking a bath in here, washes off all the sins and brings a good fortune in life”. With the high spiritual belief, captivating flowing blue lake with a backdrop vista of landscape and towering mountains, this lake stands to be one of the major highlights of our Upper Dolpo Trek.

Shey Gompa - Timeless Traditions and the Majestic Crystal Mountain

Shey Gompa is a tiny yet spiritually rich village adorned with red shrines, mani walls, and chortens, with prayer flags flagging with the yak bells ringing behind, said to be the heart of the Dolpo region in Nepal. It is home to many ancient gompas/monasteries dating back hundreds of years. Well! This settlement is also named after the famous “Shey Monastery” built in the 12th century. It has several ancient attributes of whitewashed walls, thangka paintings, mandalas, prayer halls, and the sculptures of religious leaders Avalokiteshvara and Padmasambhava spiritually reflecting the unchanged Buddhist devotion.

Here, the holy “Crystal Mountain” resides also referred to as a “Kailash of Dolpo” and “The Dragon’s Roar”- behind this name, there is a spiritual myth connected to it. The myth depicts that once a Buddhist leader “Senge Yashi” transformed himself into three lions to demolish the evilness of this area, since then the lion's footprint has been found near the mountain. Still, visitors perform Kora rituals (circulates) offering food and tying prayer flags around Crystal Mountain believing that it brings peacefulness and prosperity to their lives.

The Isolated People and Unique Lifestyle of Bon Buddhism

Can you believe that Dolpo is a home for more than 10,000 people and each of them tends to follow Bon Buddhism which was founded 18000 years ago during Zang Zung Empire? Discovered a way ahead of time, this Dolpo region of Nepal still preserves the authenticity and tradition of being unbothered by the modernized world. In every village, you get to see en route, there are shrines, ancient paintings, and several monasteries with a strongly knitted Tibetan community reflecting the ancient era.

Along the trail, you can see females wearing Chuba (a traditional dress) adorned with traditional designs and jewels such as necklaces of "The Deer Teeth", and hair ornaments made with precious stones that resemble a 90's livelihood. The only means of living for these precious angels are animal husbandry, wood carvings, raising yaks, sheep, and Himalayan blue goats. They are still unknown of the fact of how advanced foods taste, how gadgets are used, and how modern life is lived, and maybe that's what makes them "A Tribe Gem Hidden In the Himalayas" showing the isolated lifestyle and tradition passed down from generation to generation.

Essential Information

Best time to do Upper Dolpo Trekking

While embarking on any expedition/trip knowing everything about the changing seasons is crucial especially when you are thinking about a trek to the Himalayas. The ideal seasons to undertake the trek to Upper Dolpo are Spring and Autumn, however being located in the rain shadow area this Upper Dolpo Trek in Nepal can also be commenced during the Monsoon and Spring.

Meanwhile, doing this trek in the winter can be a total nightmare that can ruin the trip and create many hazardous situations due to cold temperatures with heavy snowfall. Here is a detailed overview of what each season has to offer:

What to expect in Spring (March-May)?

Spring is hands down one of the best seasons to do a trek in Nepal. The temperature ranges from -10 degrees to 15 degrees Celsius offering a perfect climate to hike for 4-5 hours each day without being all sweaty and drained. As it falls after the end of freezing winter, it provides a spark of late winter where the snowy trails can be seen while crossing the high passes. The mountain views are clear without any fogginess along the trails being well maintained without worrying about it being slippery.

On top of that, it is the harvesting season of yarsagumba (biological gold) at the Upper Dolpo section after crossing 3500 meters, which tends to be one of the best and once-in-a-lifetime experiences to witness and maybe even try by yourself. The lower trails are beautifully adorned with pine, and rhododendrons blooming stunningly. Meanwhile, if you are planning to do Dolpo Trek then, make it scheduled from mid-April till late May as the late climatic effect of winter can make the high passes section challenging to cross due to heavy snow.

What to expect in Autumn (September-November)?

There's no doubt that how Autumn stands to be another peak/best season to experience the aroma of the Himalayas in its finest way. As this span of the season falls just after the end of the monsoon (heavy rain/snowfall) it tends to have stable weather with temperatures ranging from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius with the clear visibility of mountains and greenery. On top of that, the main festivals of Dashain and Tihar occur in the middle of October so, the wanderers like you can experience the crisp of celebration gaining a new insight of remote villages. However, if you are willing to do Upper Dolpo Trek during this peak season then make to plan the itinerary before November. After the end of Nov, the winter gets started in the Dolpo region.

What to expect in Monsoon and Summer (June to August)?

If it was any other trekking expedition in Nepal, then the trip in such remote areas during the Summer and Monsoon isn't highly recommended. Some places like Upper Mustang and Upper Dolpo are generally considered a rain shadow area with a minimum percentage of rainfall, you can easily hike along the trail without panicking about high rain/snowfall. On the other hand, In the beginning section (lower Dolpo) you can expect a little rainfall that can sometimes cause delays in flights to and from Juphal due to bad weather which is the only concerning part. But, at the upper sections, the trails are dry allowing a suitable barren route to hike on.

Why avoid this trek in winter (December to February)?

Winter trekking in the Upper Dolpo is highly not advisable as it brings intense snowfall that can be a terror to begin a hike with. The temperature falls below -10 degrees Celsius which can be cold especially when being accommodated at tent camp which could lead to altitude sickness. The harsh temperature, bad weather, cold altitude, and high snow passes with slippery trails can make trekkers suffer from frostbite and AMS (acute mountain sickness) making it the worst season to do the Upper Dolpo Trekking.

How difficult is the Upper Dolpo Trek?

A journey to the mountain areas isn't an easy task that can be completed in the blink of an eye. Especially when you are opting for Upper Dolpo Trek having limited amenities or you can say zero facilities in the rising high altitude each day. This trek to the Upper Dolpo is considered a strenuous/challenging hike, there are several reasons attached to it.

Firstly, it is a long difficult trek that consists of 23 day long itinerary at the Dolpo region of Nepal excluding the 4 days here in Kathmandu (city) which almost touches 1 month of expedition which is not a joke even for pro hikers. Besides that, the tough section comes when ascending at 5-6 hours each day through rugged terrains having several ups and downs that can be physically exhausting if you have never hiked before for more than 4 hours.

Secondly, right from the start after getting landed at Juphal the tented camping begins where we must stay at a tent as there are no signs of lodges/tea houses in between except the houses of locals which can be frustrating to continue the trip for beginners.

Thirdly, the altitude itself is a challenging part as we spend the day and night at above 4000 meters each day at the upper Dolpo section there is always the risk of Acute Mountain sickness (AMS) circulating. Besides that, we'll also navigate through many passes such as including 3 major high passes above 5000 meters Jeng La, Shey La, and Kang La Pass walking past snowy trails for continuous 6-7 hours back and forth that could make us feel the effect of altitude sickness if proper preparation isn't done well before the trek.

If you feel any early symptoms such as severe headache, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and sleep, or the fast pace of the heartbeat due to lack of oxygen then, make sure to inform the guide immediately and take a day rest to gradually adapt to the rising high elevation. Nonetheless, this Upper Dolpo Trek itinerary is set for 27 days altogether with 3 acclimatization days that minimize the risk of AMS. So, we can gradually ascend to the mountain areas without panicking and overdoing the pace of the trek.

With proper pre-preparation, a tailored itinerary, choosing the appropriate season, carrying the right gear, and a skilled experienced guide this trek to the Dolpo can be easily completed without any hassle.

Altitude Sickness during the trek to Upper Dolpo

It is no secret how altitude sickness can be a main problem that could break your expedition success into pieces. This Upper Dolpo Trek itinerary begins with a flight to Juphal via Nepalgunj. As soon as we land at Juphal the beginning point of the hike, it reaches 2504 meters which is still not a problem and yet manageable. The main concerning part regarding the effect of altitude sickness comes when we cross the elevation over 3500 meters from Sulighat and reach 5375 m. at Kang la Pass. The temperature falls at - degrees Celsius at night time which could lead to insomnia (loss of sleep) if there is a mild symptom of AMS.

There is no fixed assurance of whether one could get any symptoms/effects of altitude sickness, whether you are a beginner or an experienced trekker it can occur to anyone. Meanwhile, if you are acclimatized well before/after reaching the higher elevation and maintain the walk of the pace without panicking then it can clearly and safely be avoided. After crossing 4000 meters we can feel mild symptoms such as heavy heartbeat, difficulty in breathing, and minor headaches.

Thinking about whether you could get one? Well! we have set this Upper Dolpo Trekking itinerary for 27 days with 3 acclimatizations in between that reduce the hazardous situation of AMS. Our trained and medically equipped guides and porters are always there to assist you being your shadow at every step. Hence, there is a minimum risk of getting altitude sickness as it is a well-planned trip with a manageable itinerary along the best experienced supporting crews.
