The Kanchenjunga Trek route lies in a remote area with limited amenities. As it is situated on the far eastern side of the country. The terrain is rugged with relentless ups and downs and takes a minimum of 19 days to complete. On top of that, it requires a special permit to get through this restricted area, making it an unexplored trek and keeping away large crowds of trekkers from this hidden gem. Although the trek is moderately difficult, the undiscovered views of the heavenly Himalayas, alpine meadows, diverse landscapes, and a sense of solitude at every point of the trek reward you.

The locals worship Mount Kanchenjunga as five celestial Tathagatas (Buddhist deities). So, no one ever dares to touch the summit point of this mountain and remain 5 feet below concerning the sentimental values of people. These mythological and many other spiritual insights, add a unique experience to the trek.

Kanchenjunga region was closed to trekkers until mid-1980 whereas in the present day, the region is protected by the Kanchenjunga Conservation Area project where beautiful fauna and flora are still in their natural state today. Preparation for Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek

Here are some major points, you should consider for the preparation for Kanchenjunga Circuit trekking:

Mental preparation: Being mentally prepared for any trek is more crucial than any other thing. This trek takes you to remote areas with bare minimum facilities. Here, you can have problems adjusting to limited amenities especially when you are a beginner. Also, in the middle of the trek, there may occur any sort of unexpected challenges including unfavorable weather conditions, due to which you might feel some difficulty in adjusting. So, before heading on the Kanchenjunga trek, you must know that you are heading on a trek in an off-beaten path, just making yourself mentally prepared for this trek makes the trip smooth.

Physical fitness: Heading towards the mountain area means ascending every day with a high level of elevation for which high stamina and being physically fit are mandatory as trekkers have to walk for at least 7-8 hours in some days. To strengthen the body you can do some sorts of cardio like running, cycling, and hiking with some kgs of loads in the bag that makes the challenging trek smoother for beginner trekkers as well.

Research: Even though there will be a professional guide throughout the trek, it’ll be great if you do proper research regarding the trail route. In addition, also about the favorable season, estimated cost, distance, elevation, and most importantly accommodation which would be the best choice for you with our management team.

Altitude acclimatization: The Kanchenjunga Circuit takes you to higher altitudes each day, most importantly with the highest point at 5140 meters of altitude. Trekkers might feel altitude sickness which can lead to serious problems due to which it’s necessarily pivotal to acclimatize yourself allowing mind and body to gradually adapt to the increasing elevation.

Medical Considerations: Before heading towards the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek, please pay 100% attention to your health and medical conditions to prevent any health issues as the Kangchenjunga region accessibility is limited and remote, the immediate access to health care isn’t easy there so it is highly recommended to do a whole body check-up right before embarking on this journey and be prepared according to the guidelines of a doctor.

Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek Best Time

Spring (March, April, May): Trekking to the Kanchenjunga, throughout the spring season means trekking at a favorable time as the weather is mild making trekking regions warmer and allowing you to trek more comfortably. The rainfall is low making the trail conditions perfect for hiking, and distinct flora including the rhododendron and oak blooms perfectly adding pink and red vibrantly to nature. Despite being the peak season, During the Kanchenjunga circuit, you will find quiet trails compared to any other treks. On top of that, due to the less-crowded trails, you’ll get a perfect time to indulge in the spectacular views of heavenly glaciers and mountains in a tranquil environment.

Summer (June, July, and August): During the summer season, you’ll encounter heavy rainfall and snowfall. Besides this, as it falls under monsoon season it makes the trail slippery and muddy making it more difficult to hike. Despite these difficulties, the lush green forests and blooming flowers create a captivating atmosphere that makes the voyage worthwhile. The trek can be done during this season as well but must require more preparation level.

Autumn (September, October, and November): This season is always regarded as the peak season for trekking to the Kanchenjunga circuit. Many people prefer the autumn season for many good reasons. As it is harvest season, you’ll see trails full of greenery and golden tones in the lower section. Due to the serene skies and low rainfall, you’ll see perfect panoramic views of snowcapped peaks and Himalayan landscapes most importantly, this season falls at the main festivals of Dashain and Tihar of Nepal, so you can get unique insights into the culture and festivals of the Kanchenjunga region making your trek memorable.

Winter (December, January, and February): Trek during the winter is somehow similar to the summer season as there is heavy snowfall in higher altitude areas due to which many tea houses might get closed as the trail is quite empty during this trail. But, if you have a group to trail then you can go during this season well with your group but you must be prepared well with a proper itinerary. For that, we can discuss it beforehand with the team to ensure your trek goes smoothly and safely without any hurdles.

Permits Required for the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trekking

Your permits will be checked at the Kanchenjunga National Park checkpoint. But, there is nothing to worry about as we arrange all the necessary permits in Kathmandu before your arrival. As per the government rules, a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP) can only be possible if you are trekking through a registered trekking agency like Destination Himalaya Treks and Expedition must trek along with at least one other person and that doesn’t include the guide and porter. There are only two permits required for the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek mentioned below:

  • Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit: USD 20$, NPR 2000/- per person
  • Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit: USD 30$, NPR 3000/- per person

Accommodations during the Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek

During the Kanchenjunga Circuit trek, you will be accommodated at teahouses/lodges with limited facilities. It is expected as the Kanchenjunga region is remote and the number of trekkers is fewer compared to other trekking regions of Nepal. Therefore, the numbers of teahouses/lodges are fewer, and at far distances from each other. Although the tea houses are basic and less, it is comfortable enough.

However, you can have difficulty in adjusting to these lodges but you'll surely enjoy your stay due to its rawness and warm hospitality of distinct communities. Since there are only fewer teahouses in these trails, sharing of rooms and toilets must be done. The toilets are of eastern style and outside the teahouse. In lower sections, you can get a separate room with an attached bathroom as well. But, when moving to the higher areas of Kanchenjunga, each room consists of two beds with shared washrooms. Since this is trekking in the mountains, some adjustments must be made. For instance, there are no electricity sockets for charging in each room, and must go to the dining area to charge up the phone which costs you around $2- $5 same goes with the Wi-Fi facility as well. As the trekking is in mountain regions with limited facilities, some adjustments
must be made.

Meals on this Kanchenjunga Trek

Throughout the Kanchenjunga circuit trek, you’ll get proper 3 times meals per day, the region has quite basic foods but also offers appropriate nutritious foods. In the morning menu, there are different options available in the tea house like Tibetan local food (Roti, curry, and boiled eggs), English breakfast, Veg, and non-veg soups with tea and coffee, etc, pancakes, porridge, noodles which are provided before the hike. During lunch and dinner time, the foods are made according to your preference from the menu like Dal Bhat, Thukpa, Nepali noodles, Fried rice, non-veg and veg curry, dry meats, Thenduk, Green Spanich momo, and many other local foods. So, you don’t have to worry about food throughout the trekking. Just make sure to eat fully to increase your stamina level for walking.

Note: Throughout the trek, it is kindly advised to drink hot beverages like Ginger Tea, Lemon Tea, Black Tea, Hot lemon, Warm Honey water, and garlic soup (essential) to maintain body warmth in cold high-altitude temperatures and avoid any kind of alcoholic beverages, caffeine, and cold foods that can cause altitude sickness in such regions.

Communication and Drinking water facilities in Kanchenjunga

Kanchenjunga is a remote region and as the altitude rises, it’s hard to get communication signals. The communication signal works nicely at lower altitudes and higher altitudes, you will find difficulty in finding the network. The internet facility and phone communications can be used where the signal is strong. Electricity is available in most places. In some places, there are solar panels as well. For charging electronic gadgets, you can get your phone charged in dining areas and must pay an additional charge.

Thus, it is highly advised to bring essential electric gadgets such as solar power banks, charging cables, and extra batteries. Regarding the water facilities during the Kanchenjunga Trek, natural spring water is the source of drinking water here. The fresh and clean water directly comes from the Himalayas and tastes great. However, we provide you with water purification tablets before this trek as well. So, you can use it while drinking the water.

Carry a durable water bottle to fill water from the taps or at teahouses. As, along the way the price of bottled water is way out of the affordable section. You can fill the water in the tea house that you are staying in, for the extra boiled water you have to pay additional charges to the lodges.  Hence, it is highly suggested to carry Steripen during the Kanchenjunga Circuit to purify the water.
