Annapurna Circuit Trek Overview
The Annapurna Circuit Trekking crosses the world's highest pass at Thorong La, visits Tibetan villages like Chame, Pisang, Manang, and Yak Kharka, plus Muktinath Temple and Poon Hill. Touching the two iconic regions of Manang and Mustang, it navigates along the Marshyangdi Valley and takes a descent along the world's deepest gorge of the Kali Gandaki Valley, offering a distinct perspective and isolated terrains of the Himalayas.
This trek navigates through the iconic Annapurna Conservation Area, right from the very beginning, unraveling the rich Himalayan flora and fauna, and iconic viewpoints, where the surrounding landscapes marvelously shift in each stride, and the thundering Annapurna and Dhaulagiri panoramas greet you, while the rugged Tibetan plateau feels like a sci-fi movie set.
During the adventure to Annapurna Pass, each day leads you from lovely hills, verdant forests, agricultural farms, the local hamlets of quaint villages, high passes, to the desert-like hills, high cliffs, sky caves, demonstrating every highlighted aspect of the classic himalayan trail, which is why it is named Annapurna Round Trekking that encircles the whole protected area.
The first half of this Annapurna Circuit Trek covers the Manang region, starting from a road drive to Dharapani from Kathmandu and meandering through the Marshyangdi valley. Bypassing several settlements such as Chame, Upper Pisang, Gheru, Ngawal village, and Yak Kharka, and visiting ancient monasteries and hill points, with the best possible Himalayan Range such as Lamjung Himal, Annapurna, Pisang Peak, Chulu West, and Chulu Far East.
In between, the acclimatization day is set in Manang (3500 meters), where we'll ascend to the Gangapurna glacier Lake formed by the glacier of majestic Annapurna II (7934 m) and Gangapurna Himal (7455 m). Then, the trek continues with an enchanting hike to the pass of Thorung La, where the 360-degree panoramic views of Tilicho Peak, Mt. The route continues by covering the second half of the route, connecting the Mustang District - also known as Himal Pari ko Jilla (Land behind Himalayas), where the downhill walk leads us to the "Muktinath Temple", following the bank of the Kali Gandaki River. The journey rewards you with dramatic cliffs and desert landscapes surrounded by the towering ancient caves and mountains, come into view, which also touch the route of the Mustang region.
Then, the safari-like dirt-road drive to a fascinating one begins from Muktinath to Tatopani (Natural Hot Spring), where many other popular trekking trails converge, so make sure to mingle with fellow hikers and listen to their travel stories. Maybe your next destination?
After Ghorepani overnight, ascend Poon Hill for sunrise over 17 peaks, with the golden shade of sunrise on the very next day. Our trek concludes with a road drive to Kathmandu via Pokhara over the following 2 days, with the lifetime memories carried within us.
Even though this trail reaches an elevation of 5416 meters, it might sound a bit challenging. We've set this 12-day Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary with a gradual ascent of only 400 to 500 meters each day, making sure that you get to acclimatize well. However, to cover the distance of 228 km with a daily hike of 5-6 hours, be prepared physically and mentally beforehand.

Manang Valley
Situated within the Annapurna Mountain Range and the diverse landscapes on every side at such a high altitude of 3500 m., Manang stands out to serve the best possible mountain views of Annapurna II, III, Annapurna South, and the legendary Tilicho Peak. While settling here for two days, we’ll get to learn about their Tibetan Buddhist culture even more in-depth and pay visits to many monasteries, such as the old Braga monastery, along the way to this valley. If you want, you can even wear their traditional attire, jewels that are displayed for rent at local tea houses.
Being recorded as the least populated area of Nepal, Manang Valley is perfect for acclimatization days for those who want to relish in nature and disconnect from busy life. During this stopping point, we’ll hike to Gangapurna Glacial Lake or Ice Lake- Kicho Tal with a panoramic view of Pisang Peak and Chulu Peak.
Thrilling cross over Thorong La Pass (5416 meters)- The World’s Highest Pass
Thorong La Pass stands at an altitude of 5416 meters, connecting the two districts of Manang and the Mustang region of Nepal. It is also known as the trading point of these 2 valleys, which transports goods such as wool carvings, salt, and is also the focal point of cultural exchange between these main sections connecting the ancient Tibet route.
Crossing Thorung La is surely not an easy task, which demands 7-9 hours of hiking to cross from the Thorung High Camp. Meanwhile, the effort taken for even the tiniest of movements while trekking the Annapurna Pass will be 100% beneficial, as you’ll be accompanied by Himalayan landscapes and the panoramic vistas of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Range from the top of the pass, which will instantly bring you a sense of accomplishment that remains with you even after the Round Annapurna Trek is over.
Muktinath Temple
Muktinath Temple is one of the most highlighted sections of our trip, after crossing over the pass, which is a pilgrimage site to both Hinduism and Buddhism cultures. This temple of Muktinath is densely covered with many small temples related to Guru Rinpoche, the founder of Tibetan Buddhism himself, and also connected with Lord Vishnu, said to be the founder of the universe in Hindu theology.
Here, you can see the 108 taps where the individuals are having showers and taking a dip in a nearby small pool. It is said that it tends to wash all the sins away and bless visitors with fortune and blessings. Just at the front side, the natural flame burns 24 hours, which is related to the belief of Hindus, and at the right, the huge statue of Lord Buddha standing high at the surrounding views of several mountains, including the unique landmark of the Mustang region, can be seen.
Sometimes, the journey is more about destinations and mountain views, but it also plays a huge role in enriching the learning of other cultures and traditions. Yes, this trip surely stands to be the top-notch destination amongst all, reflecting a rich tapestry of culture.
Tatopani: A key stopping point in the hot spring for relaxation
Tatopani, also known as the natural hot spring of Annapurna Himalaya, Nepal, is the stopping point of every Annapurna region trek, which is also one of the highlighted aspects of the Annapurna Trail. Locals say that taking a dip here at the hot spring cures skin diseases and rejuvenates the body and soul, healing without any expensive therapy.
Located at the bank of the Kaligandaki River, after a long, strenuous hike that almost ends after 2-3 days from here, it serves as the perfect stopping point where we can just take a chill pill, drinking hot lemon water and coffee, recalling the memories created on the route with fellow hikers and our supporting crews.
An enchanting Hike to Poon Hill (3210 meters)
Poon Hill sunrise reveals 17 golden peaks, including the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Range. After an ascent by the stone staircase right after we wake up at 5:00 AM, and reaching the Poon Hill View Point, several mountains such as Mardi Himal, Tukuche Peak, Dhaulagiri, Lamjung Himal, Nilgiri, and Hiunchuli reward us with their panoramic view. And the best part? Well, that would be sipping a hot americano and gazing over these snowcapped peaks just behind the blooming red rhododendrons and the plane flying just above these heavenly peaks- a perfect way to conclude our enchanting Annapurna Circuit Tour.
