Within just 12 days, while trekking to Annupurna Circuit, the gradual transition from lovely hills, verdant forests, agricultural farms, the local hamlets of quaint villages, high passes, to the desert alike tibetan plateau, high cliffs, sky caves, demonstrates every highlighted aspects of Annapurna region, that is why it is named as "Annapurna Round Trekking" that encircles the whole protected area.

The first half of this Annapurna Circuit Trekking covers the Manang region, starting from a road drive to Dharapani from Kathmandu and meandering through the Marshyangdi valley, bypassing several settlements such as Chame, Upper Pisang, Gheru, Ngawal village, and Yak Kharka and visiting ancient monasteries and hill points, with the best possible Himalayan Range such as Lamjung Himal, Annapurna, Pisang Peak, Chulu West, and Chulu Far East.

In between, the acclimatization day is set in Manang (3500 meters), where we'll ascend to the Gangapurna glacier Lake formed by the glacier of majestic Annapurna II (7934 m) and Gangapurna Himal (7455 m). The trek continues by covering the second half of the Annapurna circuit route connecting the Mustang District- also known as "Himal Pari ko Jilla," which means "The Land behind Himalayas"- where the downhill walk leads us to the "Muktinath Temple", following the bank of the Kali Gandaki River. Before attaining the journey itself is a rewarding destination, as the dramatic cliffs, desert landscapes, surrounded by the towering ancient caves and mountains come into view that also touches the route of Upper Mustang region.

Then, the safari-like dirt road drive to a fascinating one begins from Muktinath to Tatopani (Natural Hot Spring) where many other popular trekking trails are connected, such as the newly introduced Khopra Ridge and the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, so make sure to mingle with other fellow hikers and listen to their travel stories. Maybe your next destination?

Persisting the trek, and settling one day at the Ghorepani Village and with an ascent to the Poon Hill with an immersion of not 1 not 2 but 17 mountains with the golden shade of sunrise on the very next day. Our trek concludes with a road drive to Kathmandu via Pokhara over the following 2 days, with the lifetime memories carried within us.

While settling here for two days, we’ll get to learn about their Tibetan Buddhist culture even more in depth and pay visits to many monasteries, such as the old Braga monastery along the way to this valley. If you want, you can even wear their traditional attires, jewels that are displayed for rent at local tea houses.

Being recorded as the least populated area of Nepal, Manang valley is perfect for the acclimatization day who wants to relish in nature and disconnect with the busy life. During this stopping point, we’ll hike to Gangapurna Glacial Lake or Ice Lake- Kicho Tal with a panoramic view of Pisang Peak and Chulu Peak.

Thrilling cross over Thorong La Pass (5416 meters)- The World’s Highest Pass

Thorong La Pass stands at the altitude of 5416 meters connecting with two districts of Manag and Mustang region of Nepal. This temple of Muktinath is densely covered with many small temples related to Guru Rinpoche- the founder of Tibetan Buddhism himself and also connected with Lord Vishnu- said to be the founder of the universe in Hindu theology.

Here, you can see the 108 taps where the individuals are having showers and taking a dip in a nearby small pool, It is said that it tends to wash all the sins away and bless visitors with fortune and blessings. Just at the front side, the natural flame burns 24 hours, which is related to the belief of Hindus, and at the right, the huge statue of Lord Buddha standing high at the surrounding views of several mountains including the unique landmark of Mustang region can be seen.

Sometimes, the journey is more about destinations and mountain views, but it also plays a huge aspect to enrich the learnings of other cultures and tradition. YES! This trek to Annapurna Circuit surely stands to be the top-notch destination amongst all, reflecting a rich tapestry of culture.

Tatopani: A key stopping point in the hot spring for relaxation

Tatopani, also known as the natural hot spring of Annapura Himalaya Nepal, is the stopping point of every Annapurna region trek, which is also one of the highlighted aspects of the Annapurna Circuit Trek. Locals say that taking a dip here at the hot spring cures skin diseases and rejuvenates the would, body, and mind, healing without any expensive therapy.

Located at the bank of the Kaligandaki River, after a long, strenous hike that almost ends after 2-3 days from here, it serves as the perfect stopping point where we can just take a chill pill here drinking hot lemon water and coffee recalling the memories created in the Annapurna circuit route with fellow hikers and our supporting crews.

Poon Hill stands out to be one of the best hill point or view point for showing not 1, not even 2 but 17 notable peaks including the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Range. After an ascend by the stone staircase right after we wake up at 5:00 AM, and reaching to the Poon Hill View Point, several mountains such as Mardi Himal, Tukuche Peak, Dhaulagiri, Lamjung Himal, Nilgiri, and Hiunchuli rewards us with it's panoaram view. At Dharapani, the day begins with breakfast. We’ll start the trek to Chame village- the district headquarters of Manang district and trail through the green forest of oak, pine, fir, and maple trees. Surrounded by the dense greenery, we’ll also get to see breathtaking insights into the majestic snow-capped mountains of Annapurna II, Lamjung Himal on our left. While many local people and professional trekkers continue to Manang the same day, we will stay overnight in Chame for proper acclimatization.

The 3rd day of our trek begins in the early morning by heading towards the Upper Pisang by traversing through blooming red, and pink rhododendrons and pine in a steep, narrow valley to have our first view of the thrilling giant rocky wall known as Paungda Dada Rock and Swargadwari Danda, rising above 1500 meters from the Marshyangdi River. From the Chame route, we’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of the towering Annapurna II and pyramid-shaped Pisang Peak on the northeast by passing through several villages like Talekhu, and Bhratang. We’ll cross the long suspension bridge before entering Pisang where we’ll be staying overnight. Today is one of the most beautiful but challenging paths of our Annapurna Circuit Trek route as we’ll trail through several steep ascents starting right from Upper Pisang. There are two routes available to reach Manang, the lower route takes us through the valley via the Humde airstrip, and the upper route. We’ll be trekking on the upper trails through Ngawal via Gheru from where we’ll be treated to alluring views of Annapurna I, II, III, IV, Lamjung Himal, Gangapurna Himal, and Pisang Peak. Before arriving at Manang, we’ll pass by Tibetan settlements and famous monasteries which provide unique insight into Buddhist culture that makes the difficult trek worth every step. We’ll also visit the largest monastery in Manang, the Barge Monastery which gives a peaceful and serene vibe making our trek more meaningful. Although the trek is tough today, it’ll prepare us for the crossing of Thorong La Pass tomorrow.

Today is our acclimatization day which is necessary for us to adjust to the rising altitude. As per our Annapurna Circuit Trek itinerary, we have two exciting options for exploration: After breakfast, we can trek to Lama Cave, located just above Manang, where an elderly Lama couple once welcomed visitors with a cup of black tea for 100 rupees. Although the couple has passed away, others continue this tradition, and it is believed that receiving blessings from the Lama helps trekkers in crossing Thorong La Pass, making this journey beneficial for acclimatization. Another possibility is heading towards Ice Lake which is highly situated at 4500 meters of height. It is a long and tough day but the Lake itself is so beautiful and you will see many towering Himalaya peaks in surroundings like Annapurna massifs, Pisang, Chilang, and many more. This journey takes about 8-9 hours so we will take a packed lunch, of course there will be our guide with you during your journey. We will return to Manang Valley and stay overnight here again.

In the early morning, we will start preparing to head toward Yak Kharka, after having breakfast. After a short walk, we'll reach Tengi, a small charming old village that beautifully reflects the traditional lifestyle of the Manang people, who have constructed their homes in a cozy, clustered settlement. Here, farming is the primary means of livelihood showing us a different insight of the Himalayas and giving the village a beautiful rustic ambiance. As we continue our trek, we may encounter herds of yaks, blue sheep, and Himalayan tahr, along with horses and riders transporting essential goods. Our journey will take us to Khopra, where we can rest at a tea shop to enjoy a warm cup of tea. The trail is gentle, featuring only slight ascents, which allows for gradual acclimatization to the high altitude, although we might still feel a bit breathless at times. Today promises breathtaking views of the majestic white Himalayas and the surrounding landscapes making our hike worth it. We’ll be staying overnight in Yar Kharka tea house or lodge.

Max Altitude: 4,050m.|13,189 ft. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Guest house

Today, we can enjoy a late start, as the morning is colder than usual. Either we head to the Thorong Phedi or Thorong High Camp, it depends on the current situation. The trail gradually ascends towards Thorong Phedi, offering stunning views of white peaks, including Akwakang and Thorong Peak, as well as numerous unnamed summits along the Nepal-Tibet border. After approximately three hours of walking, we will arrive at Thorong Phedi (4,450 m), a former resting spot for trekkers before the establishment of tea houses at High Camp. Here, we will rest for lunch before going on a steep ascent to Thorong High Camp, which may take about another hour. If you find the climb difficult today due to the unfavorable weather conditions as it makes the trail slippery due to the snowfall at the Annapurna Circuit Trek route, we can choose to stay at Thorong Phedi. However, reaching Thorung High Camp will make tomorrow’s demanding trek a bit easier and shorter. We will spend the night at the cozy lodge in Thorung High Camp.

Max Altitude: 4,880m.|16,010ft. Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Guest house

Today, we must be ready for the most challenging section of our Annapurna Circuit Trek so, after a short briefing by our guide. Eat well and hydrate yourself properly as no tea houses are along the way. We’ll head towards Thorong La Pass, our most awaited destination. We'll ascend for about 4-5 hours to reach the pass, marked by prayer flags. On the north side towards Tibet of the pass, we’ll see stunning vistas of the Nilgiri and Dhaulagiri ranges and if we look back, then we can get insights into the Annapurna ranges that will leave us speechless but be careful of the strong winds that may require a quick descent. From the Thorong La Pass, we’ll descend towards a holy pilgrimage site Muktinath temple for religiously hindu108 sacred taps are believed to wash all the sins and bring blessings and we can also see the eternal flame that has been burning there for more than 2,000 years. As you stroll through the vibrant greenery of blooming red rhododendrons, birch, and magnolia adding vibrant color to nature we'll feel fresh and rejuvenated. Best time for Annapurna Circuit Trek

Even though this trek falls under a thrilling adventure that crosses the world’s highest pass. To your surprise, the Annapurna Circuit Trek is an all-year-round trek in Nepal, opening its gates to every enthusiastic hiker across the globe without demanding any specific season.

However, one might find it challenging to undertake this trek to the Annapurna circuit in winter and monsoon (off seasons) as the trails are covered with snowy sections due to the high precipitation, heavy rainfall and snowfall that makes the trail completely strenous to navigate for beginners who has zero idea of walking such terrains.

Nonetheless, by carrying proper gear and equipment and following a well-planned itinerary, this odyssey can be completed any time of the year. Here is a detailed overview of what each season has to offer, depending on uniqueness and some highlighted aspects:

What to expect in Spring (March to May)?

There’s no doubt how Spring stands out to be everyone’s favourite to do this journey, as the Annapurna Circuit Trek route is adorned with the blooming rhododendrons, pines and filled with lush green hills in every possible way.

The temperature only ranges from 22-24 degrees Celsius at its maximum level and doesn't fall below - degree celsius until we cross the Manang, offering a mild humidity to trail along at the first half. After crossing Thorung Phedi to Thorung La Pass, the weather condition might be cold, falling to - 5 degrees at night time, however, one can easily navigate by this trail as it is a perfect season of the year having a favorable climatic situation.

Besides, due to the zero chance of heavy rain and snowfall, the towering Annapurna range dominating the sky, such as Annapurna II, Annapurna South, Nilgiri, and Machhapuchare, can be seen during this Annapurna Circuit Trekking, creating a lifetime memory within us.

What to expect in Autumn (September to November)?

Autumn is hands-down another best season to for the Annapurna Round Trekking, where the temperature only ranges from 15 to 22 degrees Celsius at the lower trails and doesn't fall below -8 degrees Celsius at high altitude, providing a stable timeframe to begin the hike with. Besides, the main festive season of Nepal, Dashain and Tihar, falls in between this timeframe, rewarding hikers with the cultural immersion and witness how such vibrant celebrations are done in the Annapurna region.

The trails are filled with other enthusiastic hikers along the Annapurna trail as it is linked with other popular destinations as well where you can mingle with other fellow hikers and have an amazing companion throughout the journey, enriching this trek even more.

What to expect in winter and Monsoon (off seasons)?

As these particular seasons bring a high level of rainfall and snowfall, the trails become muddy, slippery, and challenging to walk over in monsoon season. Due to the snowy trails with a low frequency of hikers, the locals here take a break closing their tea houses, which becomes inaccessible for the visitors to settle in.

The temperature might fall to 10 degrees Celsius at the upper sections, which becomes challenging to accommodate in, not only that, but Thorang La remains closed at this timeframe for few days. So, you must plan accordingly, watching over the right seasons and setting 1-2 contingency days to book your flights back home in case the route of the Annapurna circuit remains closed.

Despite such difficulties, you can merely enjoy the snowy, frosty peaks and also get to build a snowman en route. The insight of whitely covered pathway seems insanely beautiful from Manang, making the hike one hundred percent worth it.

Annapurna Circuit Trek difficulty

Annapurna Circuit Trek falls under easy to moderately challenging level treks in Nepal that pass by the diverse landscape and varied terrains, which can smoothly done by hikers having prior experience to high altitude. In total, this trek covers a distance of 142 miles (228.5 km) that demands at least 5-6 hours per day that can be easily done by even novice hikers, but of course! with preparations beforehand; otherwise, the trailhead can be frustrating to some having zero knowledge of what remote region treks seem like.

This Annapurna Circuit Trail simply covers the 2 sections, one the easiest one and another the steep route part. Before we reach Manang from Dharapani, the route is well maintained and simple to navigate; meanwhile, after we cross Yak Kharka (4030 meters), the trail bypasses through the rugged, steep and slippery sections till Muktinath.

Also, another concerning part is crossing the world's highest pass- Thorong La Pass, with an elevation of 5416 meters, where it navigates by the snowy trail head, so make sure to wear crampons to avoid the risk of slipping away. Nonetheless, this trek to the Annapurna circuit is an easy-going expedition with some prep and a well-crafted itinerary by the proper guidelines.
