The 12-day Manaslu Circuit Trek circumvents the world’s 8th highest peak, Mt. Manaslu, explores its base camp, and crosses the iconic Larkya La Pass.

To clear your confusion, this Manaslu Round Trek explores every aspect the same as the Manaslu Circuit Trek, except that you travel at a lower cost and start the journey from Kathmandu (1630 m), cutting off 2 days for arrival and departure.

Manaslu Circuit Trekking - 12 Days Overview

The 12-day Manaslu Trek stands out as a tea house, cultural, and full-hand Himalayan adventure that unveils the pristine beauty of the heart of the Gorkha region. If you are seeking a remote, off-the-beaten-track trail and the unique lifestyle of the Tibetan communities, unbothered by industrialisation and modernisation, then this trip suits you perfectly.

As the territory falls within the restricted and isolated part of Nepal itself, trekkers must obtain a special permit, which can only be obtained if they proceed with the hike through a local travel agency, which we will handle. The major highlights of this trip are panoramic mountain views, unique landscapes, a diverse ecosystem, and the unchanged heritage roots of the Loba, Nubri, Bon, and Tsum communities. As the region is home to other ethnic groups as well, including Gurung, Rai, Magar, Sherpa, and many more, you gain insight into the region's diversity, unity, and genuine hospitality.

The route passes through some of the notable villages like Namrung, Jagat, Deng, Samdo, Sama gaun, Lho gaun, and many others, visiting many ancient monasteries, local settlements, and iconic viewpoints, showing the unhindered views of some of the legendary Himalayan peaks, such as Ganesh Himal, Boudha Himal, Himal Chuli, and Peak 29, along with Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif.

With our finely tailored itinerary, it promises to be a safe adventure, covering the highlights of the Manaslu region, including the famous monasteries, Pungen Gompa, several Tibetan villages, and the pristine Birendra Lake. Following the roaring Budhi Gandaki River, which starts with a jeep drive from Kathmandu (1360 m), and passes the route from Maccha Khola (860 m), and attains its highest at 5106 m, at Larke Pass.

It is an expertly crafted itinerary with a moderate hiking pace, suitable for trekkers who can walk 5–6 hours per day and have a short holiday in Nepal. Our main motive is to offer a budget-friendly 12-day Manaslu Circuit Trekking package for trekkers seeking a low-cost option, while also providing additional services and guidance to make your trip more comfortable. If you prefer a slower‑paced Manaslu loop, consider our 14‑day Manaslu Circuit option, which includes two acclimatisation days and an extra 2 days in Kathmandu for arrival and departure.

Although the gateway to the hidden terrain of the Manaslu Trail was just introduced way back in 1992 A.D, this region has a small number of footprints/visitors, as special permits are required to enter this Manaslu Conservation Area, due to which it remains the same as the 90's era, where Himalayan flora and wildlife are still in their pristine condition. During your acclimatisation day in Sama gaon, you will also visit the famous Birendra Lake wetland and the thrilling Manaslu Base Camp.

This 12‑day itinerary may seem fast, but it follows a gradual ascent of 400–500 m per day, never exceeding 500 m, which suits beginners and family‑friendly hikers. The package itself is a comfort journey, ensuring safety and proper acclimatisation so your body gets used to the high elevation, following the safety guidelines for this trip beforehand, and the assistance of our professional trekking guides, all of which contribute to a smooth Himalayan adventure.

Major Updates in 2026

  • Permit Changes: To undertake this hike, at least there must be two trekkers (down from larger groups) are required, easing couples, friends, family tours, or small trips, whereas a guide remains mandatory via a local travel company. Now, at the checking points in Manaslu Conservation Area (MCAP), the QR code verification is newly initiated. QR code verification speeds up permit checks while ensuring all required permits (MCAP, Annapurna Conservation, TIMS) are valid.
  • Infrastructure Upgrades: The roadway route is now extended to Maccha Khola, beyond Soti Khola, cutting an extra 1 day and 5 hours off the start, heading to the starting point directly from Kathmandu via jeep or local bus. The amenities are enhanced, such as good network stability (4 G connection), internet, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • Popularity Surge: The trekking route is busier than before, where you can get along with other hikers, enhancing the global cultural exchange, but still, the rules for the restricted area limit crowds, maintaining the off-the-beaten-path wild vibe among increasing hikers.

Trekking Route

Our Manaslu 12-day Trek starts with a drive to Machha Khola via Aarughat and Soti Khola from Kathmandu, meandering through the forested area of blooming pines, oaks, and rhododendron forests. The next day, the official restricted route of the Manaslu Conservation Area officially gets started after registering the permits at the checkpoint of Jagat, expect to catch a glimpse of langur monkeys playing back and forth, Himalayan tahr, and even the elusive red panda. Not only that, but we also hear the chirping sounds of many wild birds, including the Himalayan monal (Danfe)- the National bird of Nepal.

Continuing the journey, this trip leads us to the ancient hamlets of locals as we traverse through many notable villages such as Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Samdo, Shyala, Phillim, Sama Gaon, Lho village, Dharamsala, and ascends crossing over the Larkya La Pass- 5106 meters. In between, we'll also explore several monasteries, including the Ribung Gompa, which dates back 500 years, and Pungyen Monastery, following the Pungyen Glacier.

Reaching Birendra Lake, named after the former king of Nepal, will show us the captivating sparkling lakes surrounded by several snowcapped peaks, while acclimatising at Sama Gaon. Or else, you can choose venturing out to the Manaslu Base Camp, the foothill of the 8th tallest peak, if you still have your stamina left, and want a long-duration adventure, making the best out of the acclimatisation days.

On the following three days, this trip leads you to the high altitude settlements of Samdo, Dharamsala, and finally reaches the highest elevation of this Manaslu 12 Days Trek, at Larkya La Pass (5106 meters), and takes a descent to Bhimtang on the same day. On the 11th day, we will take a downhill walk to Dharapani, and conclude our trek, on the very next day (12th day), after returning to either Pokhara or Kathmandu, with a local jeep ride from Dharapani.

Why the 12-day Manaslu Trek in 2026-2027 Stands Out?

The remote Manaslu region, at the heart of Gorkha district, offers one of Nepal’s most isolated trailheads. This 12‑day loop follows a less‑crowded route through ancient tea‑house villages, letting you experience how trekking used to be. While many popular Himalayan trails have modernised, the Manaslu Conservation Area still preserves traditional routes, Tibetan culture, and pristine landscapes with minimal human footprint.

Immerse in the authenticity of the Tea House and Tibetan Culture

Just imagine settling yourself at one of the isolated remote routes, where the freshness of the mountains comes in a flow of wind, the fragrance of cows, which is known as a goddess here in Nepal, soothes the air, and trying the local delicacies made by the humble locals themselves, and YES! Spending days and nights in the middle of the towering landscapes and Himalayan peaks. That’s what we get to experience through this 12-day Manaslu Loop Trip.

As there’s almost 0 sign of luxury amenities throughout this trek, we’ll relish in the authentic tea house made out of wood, wood carvings, and huge stones, built by the Tibetans that seems like an architecture itself. The only accommodation available here is the home of diverse communities, where we get to interact with them and connect to their cultural roots even more. The glimpse of the lively experience of how Nubri, Tsum, and Sherpas run their lives just by an agricultural farm and engaging in animal husbandry, will truly fascinate us with unique insights while we stay at their homes.

"Manaslu" is home to diverse communities, being highly influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, as this region is bordered by China and Tibet. While we go deeper into the trailhead route, we get to immerse ourselves in the rich culture of Tsum, Sherpa, and Nubri communities, following the Tibetan culture, showing the pure, authentic way of livelihood that surely transports us to an ancient era.

Their simplicity is reflected in the way they do the thangka paintings, attires made by them with sheep and yak wools, wood carvings, and stitching prayer beads (used for prayers by Tibetans). These charming hamlets are surrounded by mani walls, chortens, Tibetan stones, ancient monasteries, and colorful Tibetan prayer flags, demonstrating the untamed beauty and culture of Manaslu.

Thrill of Crossing Larkya La Pass at 5106 meters

Reaching the highest point of the pass of Larkya La, standing at an elevation of 5106 meters, isn’t a joke; to attain this peak, one must have willpower and a high level. Going through the hurdles, with all the sweats and hardships along the way, and ascending to the Larke La finally through the snowy terrains makes our 12 days of Manaslu Trekking worth every second. It is one of the most thrilling and challenging passes in the Himalayas, which demands a long duration hike to attain there and a distance coverage of several days, offering a sense of accomplishment for sure.

Even though it is considered the challenging, strenuous wild pass, the possibility of altitude sickness remains minimal, as long as you reach the height of 5106 m | 16,926 feet, your body adapts to the rising elevation, which is why this 12-day itinerary has been set accordingly, with gradual ascent. The journey to the Larkya La Pass is no less than an adventure itself, which starts with an early morning hike at 4:00 AM, or before that as well, to avoid the windy air, and get earlier for the sunrise view over the gigantic peaks, which actually lasts for 9-10 hours of hiking, starting from Dharmsala.

While this part is one of the most challenging sections of this trip, reaching the pinnacle of the Larkya La Pass unravels the panoramic insight of the world's tallest peak - Mount Manaslu at 8163 meters, with other surrounding peaks, such as Samdo Peak, Naike Peak, Himalchuli, and Ganesh Himal, Cheo Himal, along with Annapurna I (8091 meters), unfolds the beauty of the Himalayas, making every stride worth it.

Gignatic Himalayan Peaks: Mountain Views

Without any snowy, frosty peaks, any expedition would be boring after all, who doesn't love to click pictures of the breathtaking views with the backdrop of white snowcapped peaks? You will be spellbound to know that throughout the Manaslu high altitude round trek, we'll be rewarded with several mountains. At the starting point of this trip, we can get the views of Ganesh Himal (7424 m), Shringi Himal, and Kang Guru. Gradually moving to the upper sections, we'll be welcomed by Cheo Himal, Himal Chuli, and Peak 29, with the Annapurna Range such as Annapurna II, Annapurna South, and Mt Annapurna (8091 meters) itself. While attaining the Manaslu Base camp, the unhindered panorama 360 degrees of Mount Manaslu - 8163 meters rewards us with alluring views thundering at the clear sky.

All in all, rather than just reaching the destination, the Round Manaslu Trek is an adventure that lets you pass by the unexplored trailhead, with an ancient culture of the Tibetan communities, wander around the pristine off-beaten terrains, explore the Himalayan flora and fauna, and attain a new height. If you are someone who loves to wander around one of the remotest and isolated trails, tucked in between the huge Himalayan landscapes, and less crowded trails, then this trip is for you!

Essential Information

What is the total and daily distance coverage of the 12-day Manaslu Trek?

The Manaslu Circuit Trail from Kathmandu covers approximately 152 to 160 kilometers of distance by road to reach the starting point of this trek - Machha Khola, via Aarughat, followed by an 8-9-hour roadway transportation ride.

Then, the trip officially starts from Maccha Khola, navigating through Jagat, Deng, Namrung, and Lho, with an acclimatization day at Samagaon. It includes a side trip to Manaslu Base Camp, the foothills of the world's eighth-highest peak, Mount Manaslu (8163 m), then passes through Samdo, Dharamsala, and finally reaches 5106 meters. In total, the overall length and distance coverage are between 162 and 175 kilometers, with an average trekking distance of 5-6 hours at a gradual pace.

Even though this trip might seem like a short version of the standard trekking trail, it's not, as it covers every highlighted corner and follows the major key stops, just as a regular route. The only key difference in this itinerary is that two days are removed: the arrival and departure days. The trek starts directly from Kathmandu (1360 meters), focusing on those already here, and begins right after. Here is a short outline of how this 12-day trek goes, covering the daily distance, walking hours, and elevation gain.

  • Daily Distance coverage: 12 to 17 km (7.8 to 10 miles), with a daily walking time of 5-6 hours
  • Starting elevation: 1360 m (Kathmandu), from where the journey begins, Maccha Khola (860 m), from where the walking trail officially starts
  • Acclimatization Day: Sama Gaon, which includes a side trip visit to Manaslu Base Camp or Birendra Lake, as per your choice
  • What does the daily elevation gain/loss seem like: 480 to 520 meters per day, ensuring a gradual pace of ascent

Best Time for the Manaslu Region Adventure?

The ideal seasons for this Manaslu Trail are Spring, from mid-March to the end of May, and Autumn, from mid-September to early November, offering perfect weather and mild temperatures for the hike.

  • Spring (March - May): While spring offers a thriving, blooming rhododendron forest, with the elusive, rare wildlife and migrating Himalayan birds accompanying you throughout the journey, you can expect to witness a crystal-clear panoramic vista of the mountains and landscapes without gloom. The temperature usually ranges from 5 to 12 degrees Celsius during the day, while it is expected to drop significantly to 0 to -5 degrees Celsius at night. The day is quite longer than in other seasons, with mild humidity, offering great exploration time and a chill ascent to higher elevation, not drowning you out completely, but physically exhausting due to the disturbing heat all the time and high temperature levels.
  • Autumn (Sep - Nov): Whereas another ideal season for the trail in the Manaslu region is Autumn, when you can immerse yourself in the great panoramic views of the mountains, thrive amid the boisterous celebrations of the Dashain and Tihar festivals, and gaze at the brown landscapes at each stride. As this span of the year comes after the conclusion of the monsoon season (heavy precipitation), it clears out the dusty air, has less possibility of high snow or rainfall, and offers a mild temperature ranging from 5 to 14 degrees Celsius, making it one of the favourite times to visit the almighty Manaslu Base Camp and Larke Pass.

Is this trip doable during the off-season?

Meanwhile, the Round Manaslu Trekking during winter and monsoon is not highly recommended, as the weather and temperature fluctuate widely, with continuous rainfall and snowfall, and questionable views of the surroundings as well. On the other hand, due to heavy snowfall, the pathways to the high passes usually remain blocked, making access to the upper terrains difficult. Sometimes the tea houses remain closed because of the cold climate, making the trip problematic if not well prepared.

In winter, the temperature is expected to fall between 0 and 8 degrees Celsius, and at night between -22 and -24 degrees Celsius, causing blisters, cold mountain sickness, and a slippery path to the high pass, with the climate remaining unstable. During the monsoon, heavy rain showers at lower elevations make the navigation route slippery, with a risk of landslides, avalanches, and so on, and with unclear views of the surroundings, high humidity above 22 degrees Celsius, and 5 to 8 degrees Celsius at nighttime, with gloomy clouds and unclear views. Hence, the best time is Spring and Autumn, due to stable weather conditions, easier navigation, safe terrain to walk, and the fish lens befriending the Himalayan peaks with each stride.

How hard is it to complete the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The Manaslu Circuit Trekking is considered a moderate trek in Nepal, passing through varied terrain, from woodlands and deep forested trails to rocky, steep sections and alpine, slippery pathways, and finally reaching the highest elevation at 5106 meters above sea level. As it is a round trek, it follows different terrains, rounding off the trail rather than repeating the same pathway after crossing the high pass, making the trip full of surprises, with twists and turns and several ascents and descents.

There are three major factors, that makes the overall trip, truly difficult to opt for, firstly, the long duration hike covering the distance of 14-16 km each day, depending on the route; through continuous ascends and descends, secondly, the increasing altitude each day, and lastly, the unexpected weather challenges, bringing out heavy percipitation (snow fall), and rainfall, which makes the trail, greasy, loose gravel, and slippery.

On the other hand, the trail covers a total distance of approximately. 158 kms with a daily hike of 5-7 hours each day. Sometimes, we have to navigate for almost 8-9 hours; for instance, while ascending the Larkya La Pass with slippery trails, a basic level of fitness is required. As this trek goes through remote terrain with limited infrastructure, someone who has never been away from city life might find it challenging to adjust. Thus, in addition to physical training, you must also research the route, consult our expert teams on current terrain conditions, pack accordingly, and be mentally prepared.

The first section of the trail is quite easy to commence with; the strenuous section comes after crossing Sama Gaon, as we’ll cross over 3500 meters till then. With the thinning air, the oxygen level drops, where you might feel difficulty in breathing, but there's nothing to worry about. It usually happens in the mountains; just make sure to take a pulse rate reading with the oximeter provided and follow the safe preventive guidelines to undertake the journey safely and soundly.

Another matter of fact, that you should definitely be aware of, is that one of the most strenuous days, marked by the cross over to Larkya La Pass, that begins with an early morning hike around 4:00 AM, with the head torch light, through steep climb, however, the vista marked by the prayer flags, and the backdrop views of the surrounding mountains, make every step worth it.

Meanwhile, so far, you've become well aware that this trek demands high-elevation navigation each day and reaches the highest altitude of 5106 m; the risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is always present. Keeping that in mind, this 12-day Manaslu Circuit Trek itinerary is well-customized, especially guided by a professional team. The maximum altitude we’ll ascend each day is 400-500 meters, ensuring you slowly acclimate to the higher altitude without rushing, which could lead to altitude sickness.

To conclude, even though this trip is not a piece of cake, or a wander around Disneyland and fine dining in Paris, which demand a good fitness level and ample preparation, being all organized beforehand makes this trip a hassle-free adventure and smooth going.

How Safe Is the Manaslu Round Trek?

Even though the trek to the Manaslu falls under one of the challenging adventures to venture out, at the remote and isolated trailheads, with proper precautions followed beforehand, such as a gradual hiking pace, intellectually set acclimatization days, and packing comprehensively, makes the trip safe to venture out.

However, there are many other unseen conditions, such as rapidly changing weather conditions and rapid fluctuation of the climate, with an immediate drop in temperature even in the peak seasons, which makes the trailhead slippery, unstable, and increases the nature hazards situation, such as landslides, snowy trail blockage to the high pass, and getting lost, in the dense forested route, loosing communication, to the outer world, and being stucked for several days.

Meanwhile, these dangerous factors, with those hiking along and the experienced licensed guide, aren't intertwined, which means that if you are trekking with a guide, the Manaslu Trek tends to be a safe journey.

As our guides, who will assist you throughout the trip, are local, from the manaslu region itself, who have been to the trailhead, for more than 10 years, assisting hundreds of hikers till date, you will be guided through the safest route, and let you navigate through, the safe terrains, following the safety measures right from the very begining, ensuring that your comfort, privacy, and safety is highly looked after.

Another major thing to consider is that access to medical services after crossing 3000 meters is almost zero and limited, so make sure to carry a basic first aid kit (will be provided by us), like bandages, some basic medicines, an oximeter, for emergency use, and opt for the good policy travel insurance for Manaslu Trek for 12 days. Hence, considering all the preparedness and safety measures, with the best experienced pro expert teams' guidance, makes the trip safe and sound to undertake.

To know more about the challenges, you can take a detailed overview of our difficulty guide, so that you can expect the strenuous part of the adventure.

However, as higher as you ascend higher, somewhere beyond Samdo, or Samagaon, the options become more limited, especially during off-season, and even costiler, if you are willing to buy the snacks, along the route, for instance, 1 snicker cost almost $ 3- $4, for small bars, where at city you can get it, at less than $1, and same foes for other meals, as well, so, make sure to bring the quick snacks, like choco bars, protein bars, to save extra personal spendings.

Vegans and those with allergies to certain items, please share this with us or the guide beforehand so we can ensure the meals you receive are pure vegan. Meanwhile, non-veg options are wide, as well, where you can find chicken soup, chicken curry (soup basis), dried buff called as sukuti, dry fish an so on, however, it is not fresh, and preserved for many days, so many avoiding such at higher altitude, is the best safest option, rather than upsetting your health and stomach.

Rather than caring about the taste buds, and caring what's on the table, how's the table setting, at the Himalayas, you must understand having nutritious meals, comprising all the fibers, proteins, carbohydrates, hitting daily calorie intake goal, and indulging, what suits your body, matters the most, for instance, consider having, Dal Bhat - nepali dish that comes with rice, lentil soup, veg curry or non veg curry, pickle, and can be refilled time and again, keeps up your energy high, for long hour journey.

Instead, you can consider drinking hot beverages, such as hot ginger lemon water, tea, coffee, green tea, whereas the best options are hot ginger and garlic soup, tomato soup, which keeps you warm and cozy, during cold night altitudes.

For the drinking water options, every lodge offers hot drinking water, straight from the tap, after boiling. However, before drinking, make sure to filter the water via a water purification tablet, to minimize the quick allergy reaction, which usually happens for foreign trekkers, not adjusting to the new environment. For drinking bottled water, you can find it at $ 1- $2, whereas, as we support sustainability, consider bringing a bottle with you, and refill the water in tea houses, after boiling and filtering, which is the safest way.

Even though the trail passes all the way through the remote trailhead, in case of accommodations along the Manaslu region, you don't have to worry about anything. The tea houses are simple and basic and are run by the locals themselves. In the lower terrains, the rooms with single bedrooms and attached washrooms. Moving to the upper sections, the amenities and rooms get limited, where the twin bedrooms will be provided (2 beds in 1 room) with shared toilets, as there are only a few tea houses up there. Please note that you cannot expect the lodges to be luxurious, but the rooms are cozy with comfortable mattresses, blankets, pillows, and a dining room and heating area.

The accommodations for a straight 11 nights, along the trekking trail, with an extra 2 nights in Kathmandu as well, a complimentary will be provided. Meanwhile, for the extra personal spending, such as wifi, laundry, electricity, charging, and extra beverages, for more details, you can take a look at our cost details at the top bar. Also, if you are a solo trekker, then a private room will be arranged as well.

Throughout the trail, every sort of required amenities, such as wifi accessibility, laundry services, electricity, internet facilities, hot showers, and drinking beverages from hot to cold, are available during the trip. While many people consider this kind of trip to go all around the isolated, without any connection, to the world, if you are considering such rumors, then, to surprise,, no matter which tea house you get settled in throughout the Manaslu Tea house Trek, every kind of facilities within the lodges are available, ensuring your comfort and safety and the finest, however, extra charges, are added, in the pircing, asked by the lodges itself, which you must take care by yourself.

Communication Accessibility

When it comes to the communication facilities, along the trekking trail, every kind of service, such as wifi, telephone calls, and internet access, is available; however, in a limited usage availability, as it is run by a solar panel. In the lower areas, such as Jagat, Macchakhola, and Deng, before moving beyond 3000 meters, you can expect free wifi services and easy accessibility without any extra charges.

Meanwhile, after moving to the higher elevation, for the wifi usage, it can cost you somewhere between $ 3 and $ 5, and is only available in the dining area. Whereas, to communicate during the terrains, it is highly suggested to buy a Nepali local-based SIM Card, like NTC or NCELL, and buy a data pack, for the internet, or calls, which you can simply use while hiking along the route, which are available at Aarughat, or Kathmandu, before commencing the journey. However, in case of an emergency, the trekking guide carries the satellite phone for emergency use; hence, the communication access won't be a hassle along the trail.

Note: If you are willing to buy the SIM Card, then we can help you arrange it, as it becomes too much of a hassle for foreign travelers; however, a passport-sized photo and a passport photocopy are required for a personal SIM card.

Electricity and Charging Facilities

The electricity in every tea house is run by a solar panel, in the Manaslu, so it is limited and only accessible in the dining area, while moving to the upper terrains, with an additional cost as personal expenses. The electric sockets are only available in the dining area, where you can only charge your gadgets while waiting in line, due to the limited access to the electric chargers, which cost you on an hourly basis. For example, if you are charging the gadget for 1 hour, then it costs you approximately between $4-$6 per hour, depending on the lodges. At the lower elevation, the electric charging is easily accessible, with sockets attached in the room and free charging at the same time.

While trekking during the off-season, due to continuous rainfall and snowfall, sometimes, the light gets completely out, which might be surprising for you. To stay in the darkness, however, that's how the Himalayan lifestyle goes through, where you gotta expect the unexpected situations.

Tips: Consider bringing a powerbank, for charging your gadgets in an emergency way, and save the extra unnecessary savings at such high elevation, and do not miss out carrying extra batteries, head torch lights, and extra chargers for immediate use.

Travel Insurance

Getting travel insurance is one hundred percent mandatory for the Manaslu region adventure, as it is a high-altitude trek that takes you to higher and higher altitudes each day, and reaches the highest elevation of 5160 meters. Each day, you ascend higher, with a lower thinning oxygen level, and an unfamiliar environment, which has a risk of minor problems, or even altitude sickness, and the trailhead does not have any big health posts or medical facilities, or hospitals, that can hospitalize you, if any uncertain situations occur, although the risk is rare.

Thus, having insurance helps us to arrange a quick medical response, like a helicopter evacuation, and also allows you to hike with ease, without having to worry constantly about what might happen, what to do, or how much the heli costs, medical expenses, and so on. Meanwhile, we do not sell any travel insurance; make sure to get it in your own country, and the policy covers the following contingencies:

  • Helicopter evacuation upto 5500 meters
  • Medical bills (expenses) and also for minor injuries
  • Trip delays and cancellations

While the insurance is not compulsory, we still highly recommend and suggest that you get one, which is the most crucial factor that you must consider before this trip.

Manaslu Round Trekking Permits and Fees

There are three types of required permits to trek the Manaslu circuit; however, to obtain the required permits, there are two major rules set by the Government of Nepal: firstly, you must apply for the special restricted area permits through the local registered trekking agency, and secondly, you must have someone to trail along with. This means that solo trekking is not allowed; at least two hikers, including a guide, are required to obtain the necessary permits.

  • ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit costs): USD 28, i.e., approximately NRS 3000/- for foreign nations and the SAARC residents; the fee is cheaper, costing around USD 12, i.e, NRS 1500/-
  • MCAP (Manaslu Conservation Area Permit costs): The cost for the Manaslu Conservation Area (MCAP) is the same as ACAP, costing around NRS 3000 approx. USD 28 and USD 12 for SAARC nationals.
  • Special  Manaslu Restricted Area Permit costs: To enter the Manaslu protected area, the mentioned restricted permit is required. The cost depends on the duration of the trek. From September to November (peak seasons), the permit fee becomes higher, i.e., USD 100 (NRS 11500) for the first 1 week, and after exceeding that first 1 week, it costs USD 15 for every additional day. During the off-seasons, Restricted Area Permit costs around NRS 9000, i.e., USD 75, and NRS 110,0, i.e., USD 1000/- on any other additional days.

After your booking is confirmed, we at Destination Himalaya will arrange essential permits.

Preparation and Training for Manaslu Circuit Trek

Before embarking on any mountainous trek that leads you far away from quick access to modern amenities or isolated areas, there are certain things to consider, and make sure that you are prepared enough to begin the adventure. Just like that, for the Round Manaslu Hike, there are some preparations that you must do, and it's highly recommended. However, it doesn’t mean going over the top for the preps and planning, but YES! Keeping these things in mind will surely make your trip much easier.

Be Physically Trained

Heading to the Himalayas means ascending each day, bypassing several routes like forested trails, narrow gorges, diverse landscapes, and sometimes, unfortunate weather occurrences. To make sure that you can easily let go of these things without hassle, make sure that you are physically fit and strengthen your core. It’s not like going all the way, having proteins and building muscles, you can just engage in some sort of exercise like a short hike, cycling, swimming, yoga practices, or even walking up and down stairs. If that sounds too much, then complete 10,000 steps each day to level up the stamina for the trip.

Set a Mental Clarity

While many hikers simply consider being strong enough to complete this journey, they tend to neglect how their state of mind is working. To make it clear, please remember that the Manaslu Circuit Round Trek is a tea house journey, which is so basic and simple, far away from the modern lifestyle. Someone who has never been on any trek before might find it a shock how limited the amenities and challenging terrains this trail has. So, before starting the trek, prepare a good mindset, “enthusiasm”, of how treks are supposed to be. Create a positive, perseverance, and patience level beforehand, keeping this in mind, the trek will be 99% easier. Meanwhile, many of you will love the authenticity of this odyssey, as this trip is all about exploring the Himalayas.

Medical Consideration

It is kindly suggested that you do a full body checkup 1 month before if you have any long-term health problems. As we've already mentioned, the Manaslu region has limited facilities, immediate access to health care isn't easy and quick, and it requires a helicopter evacuation. Just do a body checkup, take some precautions (if you have any health problems) with the medical experts, and carry your medicines beforehand. Other than that, no need to panic! As our trekking guides are medically trained and equipped for minor emergencies, even though such incidents are rare.

Know your Pace Level

Before heading out, you must know how long your body can go, as everyone has their own experiences, fitness, and level. For instance, if you are an experienced hiker, then the navigation of 6-7 hours might be okay, perfect for you. Whereas, for beginners, many of the novice hikers can only undertake 4-5 hrs of hiking per day, hence, if it's you, then make sure to craft the itinerary, as your body can handle.

Consider all seasonal variation packing essentials

As the weather conditions change unexpectedly, in the mountain areas, with rapid fluctuation of the climatic situations, within an hour, within a second, it is always suggested to comprehensively pack the gears and clothing, considering all four seasons. For instance, if you are hiking during the peak season, then also, make sure to carry a down jacket, a rain cover, warm and light layerings, do not overpack, instead, intelligently enlist the packing essentials.

However, there are many preparations that one must consider before the trip starts and throughout the trip, as well, for a smooth journey. To let you understand in depth, you can check our preparation guide, with tips and effective hacks to follow.

Manaslu Trek Solo or Group Joining

A Manaslu Trek without a guide is restricted, as the government has set rules that you must hike along with someone, excluding the registered guide and porter, which means you must have a travel partner to trek with. Are you quite worried about not having a fellow hiker to do the 12-day Manaslu circuit?

Do not set back just because of these rules, where you can easily opt for our Manaslu Trekking 12-day fixed departure dates for 2025 and 2026, where other hikers are all lined up to do this trek with us. What we do is apply for the required permits with them and make a group for this adventure. The maximum number of individuals will be 6 in a group, not more than that.  On the other hand, if you want a solo private trip, then YES! We offer a hassle-free journey, but the price will be slightly higher for the private trek to Manaslu. If our departure date and time don't match your holiday time and day, then we can find another free companion for you! Either way, our mission is to make you succeed with safety.

To know more about the solo adventure, you can check our detailed guidance regarding the solo adventure for Manaslu hikers, especially created focusing on the 2026 hikers, willing to head over the territory independently, privately, or all alone, only with the assistance of a guide.

Travel Essentials

Before you start this Manaslu Trekking, there are a few considerations that must be sorted out before the trip actually begins, which are essential before visiting Nepal, for your safety, feasibility, and legal purposes, at the same time.

Arrival Visa

To foreign hikers, except the indian citizens, holding indian citizenship, a Nepal arrival visa must be acquired beforehand, which you can get through online as well as by visiting the site: www.immigration.gov.np. However, you can get an arrival visa after arriving in Nepal, at the Tribhuvan International Airport, or at the checkpoint to enter Nepal, as well. To get the permits, your passport must have a validity of more than 6 months, a passport-sized photo, and the cost depends on how long you are staying here in Nepal. Like, if you are staying in Nepal for 15 days, then it costs approximately USD 30, whereas for 30 days, it costs USD 50 per day, and costs around USD 125 for 90 days.

Currency Exchange to NPR (Nepali Rupees)

The best way to travel in Nepal is to have Nepali rupees (NPR) with you, to avoid unnecessary scams, and the burden of calculating your currency with Nepali rupees, all the time. 1 USD = 132 NPR; this is the standard foreign currency rate, which you can exchange while being in Kathmandu, soon after you arrive in Nepal, at many exchange shops. Or else, you can withdraw the money from any ATMs available in Kathmandu, as there are many in Nepal. Also, sometimes, the ATMs might not work due to a bank issue or the machine itself; hence, the best option is to exchange the currency at money exchange shops.

On the other hand, while trekking in Nepal, the most effective way is to bring NPR (Nepali rupees) from Kathmandu or Pokhara, wherever you are staying, as ATMs do not work up there, nor do debit or credit cards.

Tips for the 12 Days Manaslu Circuit Trek: Good to Know

  • Throughout the journey, trail along the trekking guide and follow his navigation route, make quick medical calls, and follow the safety guide.
  • Before undertaking this hike, discuss with our expert teams regarding your prior experience, physical fitness, and medical conditions (if you have any), so the itinerary can be crafted accordingly.
  • Along the route, do not get influenced by other hikers or their hiking pace; just stick to your daily altitude gain, distance coverage, trekking hours, and proceed with the hike, as planned already.
  • If you feel any discomfort or symptoms of altitude sickness, such as mild headaches, nausea, difficulty in breathing, physical draining, insomnia (loss of sleep or breathing), or any emergency conditions, inform the guide immediately.
  • If you are a beginner, then we suggest you hire a porter to carry your bagpack, assisting you to ascend smoothly, and your gear and essentials will be looked after.
  • While packing your gear and essentials, consider all seasonal variations; for instance, if you are trekking in peak season (spring or autumn), ensure that you also take crampons, a bagpack cover, a raincoat, a down jacket, or even sleeping bags.
  • The route does not have any ATMs or banks, so take cash along with you.

FAQs

The Round Manaslu Trek is basically a budget-friendly and shorter version of the standard Manaslu Circuit Trail, which is customized to circle the world's eighth-highest peak of Mt. Manaslu at 8163 m, within just 12 days, without having to allocate 14 to 16 days of time.

Also, take a note that it is just a synonym of the circuit word, as it follows, the same core Manaslu circuit route, starting from Maccha Khola, and ascends upto Larkya La Pass at 5106 m, then, takes a downhill walk to Bhimtang and Dharapani, cutting 2 days extra of arrival and departure days in Kathmandu, and proceeds a tea house loop route, with an acclimatization day at Samagaon, with a side trip to Manaslu Base Camp or Birendra Lake. Thus, to be honest, the term used for the round Manaslu Trip is a marketing name, which emphasize faster, lower cost option, yet covers every corner and highlighted corners.

Let us know your arrival date and time; one of our airport representatives will come to pick you up at the airport, welcome you, and transfer you to the hotel via private vehicle, finding him won't be a problem, as he will be carrying a board with your name and company on it.

While you are on the trekking route, we at Destination Himalaya Treks take care of your luggage, safely and securely, until you return to Kathmandu. However, if you are thinking about visiting another place in Nepal, then you can consider keeping your extra luggage at our office for a longer time frame as well.

Daily, for 12 days, Manaslu Circuit Trekking proceeds for 5-6 hours of daily navigation covering 8 to 12 kilometers of distance per day, whereas the longest distance, which you will cover, stands out to be on the 10th day, which covers almost 18 kilometers (9 to 10 hours), which also includes a descent to Bhimtang from the pass itself. Meanwhile, the itinerary can be customized, as per your pace, experiences, and fitness level, ensuring a moderate pace of hiking that suits your health and medical condition as well.

The Manaslu region does not have any criteria on the age restriction, which means that any hikers having a basic level of fitness (good physique), and medically healthy, can proceed on this trail; however, as this trek is quite challenging, and passes via an isolated section, we suggest the hikers, to atleast be 16 years old above and senior citizens, not above 80 years old, with proper medical full body check up beforehand.

Yes, the Manaslu circuit guide, who will assist you throughout the trip, is well trained, being medically equipped at the same time, well known for handling emergencies, as they are medically trained for higher altitudes at the same time. As solo trekking isn't allowed, hiking along with the licensed guides means you are in safe hands, and explore the region in depth and legally.

Even though Manaslu Trekking is highly recommended during Spring and Autumn, if you have some prior experience with any adventurous hike to remote places. The trek can be easily completed by pro hikers in winter and monsoon (off seasons); however, there are several things to consider, first, the snowy and slippery terrains.  YES! During this timeframe, there will be high snowfall and rainfall, making the route difficult to navigate. For that, make sure to carry proper gear, customize the itinerary with 1-2 contingency days, and do some basic preparation.

As this trip is a high altitude adventure, which involves navigating beyond 3000 meters per day, and reaches the highest altitude of 5106 meters, the risk of AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) is always considered, considering it is a high elevation journey. However, to avoid such a risk, make sure that you follow the preventive safe guidelines beforehand, acclimatize well, and hike along with your own pace, gradually, adapting to the rising high elevation

For this Round Manaslu Trekking 12 days, a basic level of fitness to undertake the 5-6 hours, on a daily basis, is expected, where you must be medically fit, and mentally all set to venture out for a remote adventure in the Himalayas. Being starting the trip, make sure to be physically prepared, make the packings comprehensively, and engage in researching about the amenities, seasonal variations, climatic changes, and altitude gain, as well.

As trekking to the Manaslu circuit meanders through the remote, isolated areas and expensive permits, this trip can be a little costly. That is why we’ve introduced this Manaslu Budget Trek for those who want to explore the unique landscapes and Tibetan culture at an affordable price without compromising anything.

Our Round Manaslu Trek for 12 days is a budget trek that covers all your requirements for the trip, including permits, accommodations, guides, standard meals, and transportation costs. However, if you are thinking about shortening the trek, then the price can be minimized as well. Our standard price costs from USD 840 and goes up to USD 1150 depending on the group that your team holds.

You might need some money for personal spending, like buying souvenirs, tipping guides, snacks, and bottled water, so carry some cash, estimating some extra expenses, such as Laundry and Hot shower charges, and wifi that costs around $5 per depending on the tea house.

To pack the necessary gear, it depends on personal preferences, on what you would like to include and exclude; however, there are some must-have essentials that you should not miss out, such as warm clothing, including a down jacket, water, and windproof jackets, a full sleeves fleece t-shirt, considering a high altitude trail. Whereas, for lower altitudes such as Jagat, Maccha Khola, Deng, Namrung, you must carry moisture wicked t-shirt, lightweight hiking pants, simple t-shirts, and half pants, rain coat, a rain cover for the backpack, sunprotection essentials like 40+ SPF Sunscreen, Sunglasses, etc. In gears, you can include trekking poles, hiking boots with a comfortable and strong grip, basic first aid kits, including an oximeter, water purification tablets, and prescribed medicine. Besides, prepare a well-packed backpack, limiting the clothing, and packing only the required must-haves, for a smooth and comfortable hike.

While the gears, like a sleeping bag, are not necessarily required, however, if you are hiking in the mid-autumn or winter season, or monsoon as well, having a sleeping bag helps you to keep warm and cozy at such high elevations. The route is not so technical, so whether crampons are required or not depends on the seasonal time; thus, if you are considering the peak time, Spring and Autumn, then you can skip bringing crampons, as the terrain is not too icy or slippery due to very less percipitation.
