YES! The home of several wildlife where we can witness the langur monkeys playing back and forth, musk deers, and even an elusive Red Panda. BIRD WATCHERS! Pay attention while walking by the forested trails as en route, we get to catch a glimpse of Himalayan wild birds such as Himalayan Monal (Danfe), and Tibetan Snowcock which makes the trek filled with chirping sounds of soothing birds.

From an ascend to Forest Camp, we’ll finally cover the Mardi Himal Trail, settling in iconic stopping points such as Low Camp (Rest Camp), Badal Danda, and High Camp and ascending to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500 m) on the following days where the terrains slowly turn from blooming rhododendron, pine, and orchid with greenery surrounding to highly towering landscapes and alpine meadows showing the six distinct climatic zones of Annapurna region.

Even though this Mardi Himal Trekking, reaches such a high altitude, it passes by the well-maintained paths accompanied by several snowcapped peaks such as Annapurna II, Annapurna South, Mardi Himal, Hiunchuli, and stretches to the panorama views of Mt. Macchapuchare (Fishtail) blending the easy trails with best mountain views and rich cultures of Gurung and Magar communities making every step here one hundred worth it.

Besides, sometimes we might be gifted with traditional dance and music performances which can be perfect to end our day with, right? Depending on the time we go, we might get to experience local festivals like Dashain, Tihar, Lhosar, and any more that will enrich our cultural knowledge.

Dhampus

The base point for Mardi Himal Trek is Dhampus village which delivers vistas of Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) and the Annapurna mountain range. The high ridge makes it a viewing point that looks over the Pokhara Valley. It is home to Gurung people so we can experience their local customs and hospitality as we pass through.

We will be surprised to find the historical Dhampus Monastery dating from 1837 which preserves a collection of precious Buddhist manuscripts. The development in Dhampus has carefully included modern comforts in teahouses alongside traditional stone buildings and agricultural terraces that add charm to our 9 days of Mardi Himal Trekking.

Badal Danda

Badal Danda stands as a magical attraction during the Mardi Himal Trek providing spectacular views of the Annapurna range together with Machhapuchhare (Fishtail) and other surrounding peaks. Our trail to Badal Danda leads us across alpine meadows and forests before a clearing covered in clouds. And the best part is? It feels like we are walking above the clouds since it is covered in clouds and mist most of the time. Wouldn't you agree that it is the perfect place to enjoy breathtaking views of diverse landscapes and snow-capped mountains? The peaceful and mystical nature of Badal Danda is truly a highlight of our Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek.

Mardi Himal Forest Camp

The Mardi Himal Trail takes us to Forest Camp which locals call Kokar with peaceful surroundings. The camp sits between dense woodland that includes rhododendron trees and oak forests, just the stop for enjoying nature! We can hear birds chirping and even spot monkeys and colorful pheasants playing in the woods. A small playground for volleyball and football creates a joyful atmosphere when we catch the first glimpse of Mardi Himal alongside several snowy mountain peaks.

Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500 meters)

Early morning trekking to Mardi Himal Base Camp leads to witness one of the trek's most beautiful moments which reveals spectacular Himalayan mountain views alongside other Annapurna region landscapes. Prayer flags gently dance through the air as we reach the top, welcoming us to the stunning views.

From the viewpoint, the Mardi Himal and Machhapuchhre peaks stand just before us so close that we can almost touch them. Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges can be seen with stunning views that we can appreciate in the region.

Views during the trek to Mardi Himal

Trekking to Mardi Himal presents trekkers with an enchanting experience to observe the Annapurna region's multiple landscapes and spectacular natural wonders. From the beginning, we traverse picturesque green hills,  farms, and forests of bamboo towards the Magar and Gurung traditional villages at Dhampus. Moving ahead allows us to observe the valleys below us while passing through dense rhododendrons and oak forests.

From increasing elevation, one can gradually witness that the Annapurna Mountains, Fishtail Peak, and Mardi Himal display more stunning and clear views. Along our entire route, we experience magnificent mountain views because snow peaks reflect sunlight brilliantly in front of our eyes.  Not to forget, reaching Mardi Himal Base Camp reveals a landscape that feels straight out of a postcard while we stand in its center.

Panoramic Mountain Views from the Mardi Himal View Point

After we reach the Mardi Himal viewpoint, we can see the most stunning mountain views clearly as the Machhapuchhre and Mardi Himal itself seem massive and so close that we feel like we can touch them. We will begin the day by having breakfast before taking our short 25 to 30-minute flight to Pokhara. While flying we observe breathtaking Himalayan views with three major snowcapped ranges Annapurna, Langtang, and Manaslu visible during the journey.  We continue our journey by jeep from Pokhara until we reach Dhampus at its 31km distance. Traveling for 45 minutes leads us to Dhampus which sits at the edge of the Annapurna Conservation Area.

Our journey passes through beautiful hilly landscapes, terraced fields typical Nepalese villages. Our Mardi Himal trek begins after we ascend Dhampus where we walk along a gentle slope through rhododendron forests as we pass fields and several small settlements. Our journey covers a 4km distance while we witness the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhare peak through the trail. After reaching here, we'll do a short uphill walk to, Australian Camp which is just a 1.5-hour uphill walk, from where the fascinating views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Range can be seen with some tents set here and the famous swing. After relishing here, we'll return to Dhampus village and have our lunch.

Then we'll continue our trek to Pothana, a small village surrounded by forests located in the heart of Annapurna Conservation Area. It is a peaceful village with basic teahouses with stunning views of the Annapurna range, making it a perfect stop to spend the night.

Max Altitude: 1930 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 6-7 hours

Afterward, We begin our journey by walking along a stone trail that leads us into thick forests containing rhododendrons and oak trees. First, we reach the small village of Pitam Deralli where you will see a holy Hindu Temple where locals leave offerings for safe travel through the mountains.

This mardi Himal Trekking path leads us to Deurali after departing from the main Annapurna trail while entering thick forests. Springtime transforms the path into a stunning display of red pink and white flowers of rhododendron. The Annapurna and Machhapuchhre ranges occasionally become visible to our eyes while climbing to the northern slopes.

We reach Forest camp after a 2-3 hours hike with beautiful scenery of nature.  Forest camp is a small settlement surrounded by forests with a peaceful environment and few teahouses. It is also called Kokar meaning “remains of trees hit by lightning” and it is often covered in mist and cloud creating a unique experience.  Enjoying the views of Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, and Dhaulagiri we spend the night in a local teahouse.

Max Altitude: 2530 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5-6 hoursDistance: 10km

We make our way uphill into the dense subtropical forest approaching the alpine region. During the hike, we pass through many ridges and moss-covered trees with the occasional sight of terraced fields of Tokla and Landruk villages in the Modi Khola Valley. With cool shading of rhododendron and oak trees, and the soothing sound of birds and streams we reach the magical ridge called Low Camp at noon.

Low camp is also called “Badal Danda”  or “Cloud Hill” as it is covered in clouds and mist almost all the time. Here we can enjoy swaying on a swing made of bamboo as we look over the Himalayas that surround us. With a simple dinner and a beautiful night sky, we call it a day!

Max Altitude: 2982 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5 hoursDistance: 10km

Today as we get closer to the alpine zone, the vegetation gets sparser with short shrubs and trees with rugged rocky terrain. As the dense forest becomes behind us we notice the ridges fading and begin to see distant valleys and frosty mountains emerging. Moving forward, the Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre, and Annapurna ranges can become more noticeable and clearer.

The attitude rises as we move forward and the surrounding view becomes more beautiful. If we are lucky, we can spot Danphe, the national bird of Nepal. We pass the Middle camp for lunch before the final stretch to the High camp which gets steeper and more difficult. The altitude gain becomes noticeable with colder temperatures so after reaching High camp we warm ourselves sitting around the firing woodland in the dining area of our teahouse.

Max Altitude: 3567 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 4-5 hoursDistance: 5km

Our hike to the most challenging and rewarding highlight of the trek starts early in the morning. Since it takes us 5-6 hours to make a round trip to Mardi Himal Base camp, we pack our breakfast. The trail ascends uphill with a steep uneven path and can be slippery if it is covered in snow, creating a challenge for us.

We reach the viewpoint just in time to catch a beautiful 360 sunrise view of Annapurna South and Annapurna II and the ultimate show-stopper, Mardi Himal with Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) mountain up close. After taking in the beautiful views of snowcapped mountains and deep valleys in golden sunrise, we make our way back to High Camp. Since it is our final day in the Annapurna region, we enjoy our time to the fullest.

Max Altitude: 4510 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5-6hoursDistance: 8km

We take an alternative route to the east from High Camp making a downhill descent towards Siding Village. Passing through rhododendrons and oak forests, we can see the distant mountains and valleys before reaching low camp. After 2-3 hours, we reach Siding which is a small peaceful settlement of Gurung and Magar people as we can witness an old tradition of Gurung locals called “Rodhi” where young people gather to sing folk songs. The route takes us through Kalimati and Ghalel village before reaching the road head at Lumre.

Taking a local jeep, we can see diverse landscapes with hills, agricultural farms, and graced fields along the Modi Khola River valley. After 2 hours ride, we reached Pokhara where we can relax by the Phewa lake looking over Machhapuchre on the horizon.

Max Altitude: 822 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: 4 star hotelDuration: 8-9 hoursDistance: 52km

The return trip to Kathmandu starts after finishing our breakfast as we take the sofa bus ride. The 8-9 hours ride takes us through hills, canyons, and local villages following the Prithivi Highway while the Trisuli River flows by our side.  The route passes through Damauli, Mugling, and Naubise before we can enter the bustling city of Kathmandu, visible from Thankot.

Upon reaching Kathmandu, we can chek up in our hotel for a quick rest after a long journey.  We organize a farewell dinner followed by distributing trip completion certificates before concluding our evening. Later, we will visit Thamel to shop for local handicrafts or to enjoy the night atmosphere.

Essential Information

Best time for the Mardi Himal Trek

Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November) stand out being the best seasons, for the Mardi Himal Trek in Nepal and the reason behind it is quite simple these particular seasons offer cool temperatures for long hikes, less precipitation, and clear skies with the best mountain views.

During spring the Mardi Himal Trekking experience becomes magical with blooming flowers decorating the landscape. The hiking paths become mesmerizing due to their display of red, white, and pink rhododendrons and white orchids. The season brings additional charm because local farmers conduct planting activities. Temperature only ranges from 5 to 15 degrees Celsius allowing perfect humidity for the hike without being all sweaty with the best unhindered views of mountains and landscapes offering perfect weather conditions at the same time.

Whereas, Autumn has clear skies, autumn sunlight, and cooling breezes that allow clear views of the Annapurna ranges, Mardi Himal, and Machhapuchhre. Perfect weather where the spectacular views of mountains, hills, and valleys are visible with no rain or snow.  We can experience the local cultural traditions during the Dashain and Tihar festivals along with harvest season.  Also, there are fewer trekkers on the Mardi Himal route compared to spring so you can enjoy peaceful trails.

However, if you are willing to do the trek to Mardi Himal in winter then, the snowy trails and snowcapped peaks make the trail challenging yet fascinating. There's only one thing to consider as we hike through a wooded region with wet trails, there is a huge problem of getting caught by leeches in winter and monsoon seasons. But, if you have some prior experience then, you can easily navigate this Mardi Himal Trail with no doubt in any span of the year.

Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty

Even though this trek reaches an altitude of 4500 meters, The trek to Mardi Himal falls under easy to moderate treks in Nepal that open the gate to any age group, beginners and pro hikers. Trekking the entire route spans 40-45 kilometers during 5-7 actual days of hiking. The daily hiking duration lasts between four to seven hours throughout the trek while elevation gains increase from 500 to 900 meters on the toughest days.

The overall Mardi Trek difficulty level rises from Low Camp to Base Camp due to its steep and rocky terrain. While making our way through Forest Camp to High Camp, the trail passes by thin ridge sections along the side landscapes. But, there's nothing to worry about as it has poles set to walk by carefully while making our way uphill.

Nonetheless, Mardi Himal Trekking is one of the easiest and safest trails which doesn't demand any long-duration hike and highly rugged sections. Just make sure to trail carefully while navigating to Mardi Himal Base Camp as it contains slippery terrains en route and acclimatize properly without rushing other than that, it is good to go!

In conclusion, even if you are a first-time traveler, you may easily finish this journey without worrying about altitude sickness since our Mardi Himal Trek itinerary is well-designed. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is unlikely on our adventure as we ascend gradually gaining 400–500 meters every day. On top of that, our trekking guides are always there to assist you throughout this odyssey making sure that you are doing okay and safely ascending without gaining such AMS effects.

Food and accommodation along the trail

Locale Nepalese dishes join various international food options available throughout the Mardi Himal Trekking route. High-calorie breakfasts like Tibetan bread, chapati, porridge, pancakes, and eggs energize us before each day of trekking. Lunch and dinner consist of Dal Bhat, momos, soups, noodles, pasta, and fried rice. We highly recommend you to have "Dal Bhat", which is served with 5 other side dishes such as non-veg-veg curry, lentil soups, pickles, and rice that can be refilled as much as you can.

The Mardi Himal Trail offers basic lodging which features simple cozy rooms with basic amenities. You will find two types of rooms that consist of single or twin rooms with minimal furnishings with thin mattresses, pillows, and blankets. It is best recommended to bring your sleeping bags for additional warmth at higher altitudes.

Most tea houses have shared bathrooms with some providing hot shower facilities for an additional charge except at Higher camps because of limited water. For other amenities such as hot showers, laundry, charging, and WiFi, there's nothing to worry about, with the best views this Mardi Trek caters to everyone's preference serving well-maintained facilities.

Permits required for Mardi Himal Trekking

Two permits are needed to do this trekking to Mardi Himal which must be obtained from the authorized local trekking agency.  Don't worry!  As soon as the booking is confirmed with us, We at, Destination Himalaya Treks and Expedition will arrange all the permits required for the trek.

Travel Insurance

Although the 9-day Mardi Himal Trek represents moderate-level trekking the Himalayan journey remains an uncertain adventure. High elevation, uncertain weather, dense forests, and steep rocky terrain can cause unexpected events or accidents. Travel insurance comes into action to support you during unexpected situations on your trip and also help us to arrange immediate rescue on short notice.

Travel insurance is a safety net that comes to your rescue in case of medical emergencies, the cost of lost gear, and most crucial of all, emergency evacuation. It makes sure that your budget does not go over expected. Sometimes you may not be able to make it to the trip or flights may be cancelled, at such times travel insurance can reimburse your expenses too! You may rest easy knowing that the bothersome aspect of planning has been handled and concentrate on other fun parts of the journey.

Essential Tips for Trekking to Mardi Himal (ATMs, Preparation, Communication, Drinking Water, Packing List)

  • Make sure to bring filtered water bottles and water purification tablets to enjoy safe drinking water in the mountains without creating plastic waste.
  • Start preparing your body 6-8 weeks before the Mardi Trek with stair climbing, hiking nearby hills, swimming, and cycling to increase your strength and endurance.
  • En route, try to consume hot fluids like sherpa stew or garlic soup that help you to warm up the body and avoid the coldness that could potentially lead to altitude sickness.
  • The daily intake of 3-4 liters of water maintains proper hydration because it enables better adaptation to altitude changes and prevents headaches that may occur at higher elevations.
  • Withdraw sufficient Nepali rupees from banks in Kathmandu or Pokhara ahead of your trek because ATMs are not available during the trek.
  • Get a local SIM card from Ncell or NTC in Kathmandu or Pokhara to use during emergencies as these providers supply sufficient network coverage throughout the trek.
  • Use a power bank to recharge your devices because electricity is minimal at higher elevations. The teahouses will charge you extra electricity usage.
  • It is highly suggested not to overpack the bag even if you hire a porter, as the ascend section might be too strenuous for beginners with 10-12 kgs of backpacks. So, pack smartly but in the right way! That becomes useful along the trail and also makes the trip easy.
