The Mardi Himal Trek is an off-beaten Annapurna trail, with pristine landscapes and mountain views, a newly opened untouched Himalayan gem. In this short 1-week excursion, you get to experience distinct cultures and diverse terrains, with the iconic giants, including Annapurna and the Dhaulagiri range, at every step.

Highlights

  • A short and easy walk within the Annapurna region, enjoying expansive upfront snowcapped peaks every day.
  • Traverse through the red rhododendron, lush green forest, terraced farms, rivers, waterfalls, and traditional villages.
  • Interact with diverse ethnic groups, including Brahmin, Chettri, Magar, Gurung, and Sherpa, a mix of cultures.
  • Reach the Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500 m) or Viewpoint with the 360-degree expansive mountain views.
  • Uphill walk to one of the best Annapurna viewpoints, Australian Camp.
  • Breathtaking upfront mountain scenery of Macchapuchare (Mt. Fishtail), Hiunchuli, Mardi Peak, Dhampus Peak, and Annapurna massif.

The Mardi Himal Trekking is one of the quickest, easiest, yet least-trodden hikes in the Annapurna region. The route is easily accessible from either Kathmandu, the capital city, or Pokhara, the gateway to Annapurna trails, making it a simple decision for trekkers who want a short escape to the Himalayas. The highest altitude this excursion reaches is 4500 m (base camp), with a mere possibility of altitude sickness. The trail is straightforward, demanding only a 3-5-hour daily hike, with no alpine walks or technical sections included, standing out as an ideal choice for all age groups and beginners.

Unlike other Annapurna treks, it remains less crowded and beautifully authentic, featuring cosy community lodges hosted by the mountain people themselves, keeping the experience genuine, welcoming, and deeply connected to local culture. The Mardi route can also be seamlessly combined with other famous destinations like Poon Hill, Annapurna Base Camp (ABC), or Khopra Ridge, making it a perfect side trip or complementary addition to your Himalayan adventure.

This 7-day Mardi Himal Trek begins in Kathmandu with a scenic drive to Pokhara. The next day, we'll take a jeep drive to Dhampus, followed by an evening uphill walk to Australian Camp to enjoy breathtaking sunset views. From there, you'll hike to Pothana for your first overnight stay at a cosy tea house. The trail takes an ascent through Forest Camp, Low Camp, Badal Danda and High Camp on the two consecutive days. The surroundings gradually transform from blooming rhododendron, pine, and orchid to highly towering rugged landscapes and alpine meadows, showing the six distinct climatic zones of the Annapurna region.

The High Camp is the last stopping point before getting to the Mardi Himal Base Camp. From the tea house, or room itself, you get to glimpse the breathtaking Annapurna mountain range, keeping you excited and engaged for the next day's adventure. On day 5, the morning hike at 4:00 AM, which lasts for 2 hours, leads you to the highest point, at the base camp, with the staggering sunrise golden hues kissing the tips of the mountains. If you are quite sceptical about getting to the base camp, as it includes steep and uphill terrain, or travelling with family and kids, then you can just get to the Mardi Himal View Point (4200 m), lower in altitude, and a straight walking route.

Mardi Himal Trek from Pokhara: 3-Day & 5-Day Itineraries

As we are quite well known, our itinerary set for 7 days from Kathmandu might not suit everyone's preferences. Being one of the most popular trailheads within the Annapurna region, it has several alternative routes to cater to adventure seekers' preferences that cut off the long duration hike and shorten the itinerary.

Whereas, as many individuals usually plan the trek from Pokhara after they have explored the city of the lake and have felt the connection to the mountains, they make unplanned plans instantly. That is why we've crafted and have other options that you can easily opt for, for both fast-paced walkers and beginners willing to start from Pokhara.

3-day challenging ascent (For experienced Hikers)

Day 01: Take a drive from Pokhara straight to Pitam Deurali and Hike to Low Camp via Forest Camp - 7-hour hike

Day 02: Ascend to High Camp via Low Camp and Badal Danda - 7 hours approx.

Day 03: Early Morning ascent to Mardi Himal Base Camp and descend to Siding village: 9 hours (In and Out), and take a drive to Pokhara

5-day moderate pace (For Beginners & Families)

Day 01: Take a short drive of an hour from Pokhara to Kande and Hike to Deurali village via Pothana (Lunch Stopping Point)- 5/6 hours

Day 02: Uphill walk to Low Camp through Forest Camp - 5/6 hours

Day 03: Ascend to High Camp through Low Camp and Badal Danda- Overnight stay at High Camp: 6/7 hours

Day 04: Early Morning hike to Mardi Himal Base Camp - 3 hours back and forth, and lunch at High Camp Tea house, then Trek to Sidhing village- 07 hours

Day 05: Trek to Mardi Pool and drive for 2 hours to Pokhara

This 5-day itinerary is the most loved package starting from Pokhara, as it takes a gradual ascent covering every highlighted aspect, which is perfect for beginners and for family treks as well, considering the fact that it has a minimal chance of altitude sickness with the slow pace of the hike. For more details, you can check our 5-day Mardi Himal Trek package.

Max Altitude: 890 meters Meals: BreakfastAccommodation: Standard HotelDuration: 7-8 hours

In the early morning, we continue our journey by jeep from Pokhara until we reach Dhampus at 31km, where the walking trail begins. Travelling for 45 minutes leads us to Dhampus, which sits at the edge of the Annapurna Conservation Area.

Our journey passes through beautiful hilly landscapes, terraced fields, and typical Nepalese villages. Our Mardi Himal trek begins after we ascend Dhampus, where we walk along a gentle slope through rhododendron forests as we pass fields and several small settlements. Our journey covers a 4km distance while we witness the Annapurna range and Machhapuchhare peak through the trail. After reaching here, we'll do a short uphill walk to Australian Camp, which is just a 1.5-hour uphill walk, from where the fascinating views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Range can be seen with some tents set here and the famous swing. After relishing here, we'll return to Dhampus village and have our lunch.

Then we'll continue our trek to Pothana, a small village surrounded by forests located in the heart of Annapurna Conservation Area. It is a peaceful village with basic teahouses with stunning views of the Annapurna range, making it a perfect stop to spend the night.

Max Altitude: 1930 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5-6 hoursDistance: 10 km

Afterwards, we begin our journey by walking along a stone trail that leads us into thick forests containing rhododendrons and oak trees. First, we reach the small village of Pitam Deralli, where you will see a holy Hindu Temple where locals leave offerings for safe travel through the mountains.

This path leads us to Deurali after departing from the main Annapurna trail while entering thick forests. Springtime transforms the path into a stunning display of red pine and white flowers of rhododendron. The Annapurna and Machhapuchhre ranges occasionally become visible to our eyes while climbing to the northern slopes.

We reach Forest camp after a 2-3 hour hike with beautiful scenery of nature.  Forest camp is a small settlement surrounded by forests with a peaceful environment and a few teahouses. It is also called Kokar, meaning “remains of trees hit by lightning”, and it is often covered in mist and cloud, creating a unique experience.  Enjoying the views of Annapurna, Machhapuchhre, and Dhaulagiri, we spend the night in a local teahouse.

Max Altitude: 2530 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5-6 hoursDistance: 9 km

Today, we make our way uphill into the dense subtropical forest, approaching the alpine region. During the hike, we pass through many ridges and moss-covered trees with the occasional sight of terraced fields of Tokla and Landruk villages in the Modi Khola Valley. With cool shading of rhododendron and oak trees, and the soothing sound of birds and streams, we reach the magical ridge called Low Camp at noon.

Then, the hike proceeds towards Badal Danda, known as "Cloud Hill”, which is covered in clouds and mist almost all the time. Here we can enjoy swaying on a swing made of bamboo as we look over the Himalayas that surround us, where we will have our lunch and spend some time here.

Persisting in the journey further, towards Mardi Himal High Camp, we get closer to the alpine zone, the vegetation gets sparser with short shrubs and trees with rugged rocky terrain. As the dense forest falls behind us, we notice the ridges fading and begin to see distant valleys and frosty mountains emerging. Moving forward, the Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre, and Annapurna ranges can become more noticeable and clearer.

The attitude rises as we move forward, and the surrounding view becomes more beautiful. If we are lucky, we can spot Danphe, the national bird of Nepal. We pass the Middle camp for lunch before the final stretch to the High camp, which gets steeper and more difficult. The altitude gain becomes noticeable with colder temperatures, so after reaching High camp we warm ourselves sitting around the firing woodland in the dining area of our teahouse.

Max Altitude: 3567 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 6 hoursDistance: 11 km

Our hike to the most challenging and rewarding highlight of the trek starts early in the morning. Since it takes us 5-6 hours to make a round trip to Mardi Himal Base Camp, we pack our breakfast. The trail ascends uphill with a steep, uneven path and can be slippery if it is covered in snow, creating a challenge for us.

We reach the viewpoint just in time to catch a beautiful 360 sunrise view of Annapurna South and Annapurna II, and the ultimate show-stopper, Mardi Himal with Machhapuchhre (Fishtail) mountain up close. After taking in the beautiful views of snowcapped mountains and deep valleys in the golden sunrise, we make our way back to High Camp, where we will have our lunch. After resting here at the tea house for 30 minutes, we'll basically take a downhill walk to Low Camp with an hour or less descent, where we'll be staying overnight.

Max Altitude: 2980 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5-6 hoursDistance: 9 km

We take an alternative route to the east from Low Camp, making a downhill descent towards Siding Village. Passing through rhododendrons and oak forests, we can see the distant mountains and valleys before reaching low camp. After 2-3 hours, we reach Sidin,g which is a small peaceful settlement of Gurung and Magar people, as we can witness an old tradition of Gurung locals called “Rodhi” where young people gather to sing folk songs. The route takes us through Kalimati and Ghalel village before reaching the road head at Lumre.

Taking a local jeep, we can see diverse landscapes with hills, agricultural farms, and green fields along the Modi Khola River valley. After 2 hours ride, we reached Pokhara, where we can relax by the Phewa lake looking over Machhapuchre on the horizon.

Max Altitude: 890 meters Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and DinnerAccommodation: Tea houseDuration: 5-6 hoursDistance: 8.6 km

The return trip to Kathmandu starts after finishing our breakfast as we take the sofa bus ride. The 8-9 hours ride takes us through hills, canyons, and local villages following the Prithivi Highway while the Trisuli River flows by our side.  The route passes through Damauli, Mugling, and Naubise before we can enter the bustling city of Kathmandu, visible from Thankot.

Upon reaching Kathmandu, we can chek up in our hotel for a quick rest after a long journey.  We organize a farewell dinner followed by distributing trip completion certificates before concluding our evening. Later, we will visit Thamel to shop for local handicrafts or to enjoy the night atmosphere.

Essential Information

Best Time for Mardi Himal Trek

The ideal seasons for the Mardi Himal Trek are Spring and Autumn, as during this span of the year, the temperature is generally mild, and the weather is clear, offering an optimal season to venture out for a long expedition with the undisturbed views of the mountains and landscapes at the same time.

Meanwhile, this trek can also be done in the other two seasons of monsoon and winter, if the seasonal times don't fit your holiday duration. However, there are ample preparations that are compulsory to do beforehand, and appropriately packing the gear, while it might sound a bit challenging to complete the odyssey, with proper guidance, it can be successfully done.

Every season has something distinct and captivating to offer you; hence, no matter what season you are heading to this journey for, it will surely reward you with a breathtaking panorama of highlands and a unique perspective of landscapes.

Why choose the Spring season (March to May)?

Spring stands out as one of the finest seasons for Mardi Himal, as the temperature doesn't go beyond 12 degrees Celsius, so you can expect mild climatic conditions with a spark of cold weather, making the hike easy to begin with. As this season comes after just the end of winter, if you are a snow lover and want to build a snowman in Mardi Himal View Point, then from the beginning to mid-May, one can still feel the crispness of winter, but yes, with clear trailheads.

Well! But this is not the end yet! One of the enchantments about making our way to this enchanting journey is that, as this trek comprises several forested sections, the whole pathway is covered with red, pink rhododendrons and white orchids that bloom just right in front of the clear views of mountains and landscapes, making it one of the most loved sections amongst all.

  • From the very beginning, you get to witness the colourful Himalayan flora, all thriving, welcoming the peak time, which only blooms at this particular time.
  • The day is humid, the air is fresh, whereas at night, it does not fall below 5 or 0 degrees Celsius, making the day hike smoother, without being physically drained and at night, all cosy.
  • The day sunlight lasts for a longer time, helping in forest navigation, especially at the beginning time, when you can take a hike at your own pace, without speeding the itinerary, worrying about the darkness.
  • Possibility to encounter migrated rare faunas, Himalayan tahr, elusive red panda, langur monkeys, including Nepal's national bird, the Himalayan monal.

Why choose the Autumn (September to November)?

Autumn tends to be another season for the Mardi Himal Trekking, perfect for cultural enthusiasts and for someone who loves to thrive with other fellow hikers, cracking jokes and boasting at festivals. As this season comes after the end of the high precipitation monsoon, the weather gets clear with a high chance of no rainfall throughout the Annapurna region, offering safe ascent. Besides, the major festivals - Dashain and Tihar fall in this timeframe - Sep to Oct, so you have a perfect opportunity to gain a cultural insight with the undisturbed view of the Himalayas and six climatic zones here.

  • The possibility of rain and snowfall is almost zero, which entails the pathway to remain dry, non-slippery and smoothly doable by every kind of hiker.
  • The daytime temperature stands out as moderate, ranging between 5 and 12 degrees Celsius, whereas the nighttime humidity can be a bit chill and cold, but manageable with a heated communal dining area and a warm blanket.
  • Clear mountain views, green valleys, with dry leaves(unique experience) and an opportunity to be a part of festival celebrations, with locals.

What to expect in winter and monsoon?

To be honest, the trail of Mardi during the monsoon is not highly suggested, as, due to the rainfall, the simple route becomes completely a nightmare to complete due to the slippery sections. As this trek begins right after a drive through a forest camp, dense forested section, in monsoon, the trails are muddy, slippery, and completely hazardous to navigate with disturbing leeches en route.

Whereas, you can complete the Mardi Trekkling in winter if you are prepared well enough and have some experience of high-altitude treks. Just be mindful of booking the rooms before 1 month, as many areas remain closed due to snow blockage. Even though trekking in winter might sound like a hassle, the peaks covered with snow and the forest decorated with snowflakes will surely reward your efforts, giving a sense of accomplishment.

Nonetheless, despite the season of the year, making sure you explore the best out of this trek, we arrange treks at any time of the year!

Mardi Himal Trekking Difficulty

Even though this trek reaches an altitude of 4500 meters, the Mardi Himal Trek falls under easy to moderate treks in Nepal that open the gate to any age group, beginners, and pro hikers. Trekking the entire route spans 40-45 kilometres over 5-7 actual days of hiking. The daily hiking duration lasts between four and seven hours throughout the trek, while elevation gains increase from 500 to 900 meters on the toughest days.

The challenging level rises from Low Camp to Base Camp due to its steep and rocky terrain. Meanwhile, while making our way through Forest Camp to High Camp, the trail passes by thin ridge sections along the side of the landscape. But, there's nothing to worry about as it has poles set to walk by carefully for an uphill ascent.

Nonetheless, the trek is one of the easiest and safest trails, which doesn't demand any long-duration hike or highly rugged sections. Just make sure to trail carefully while navigating to Mardi Himal Base Camp as it contains slippery terrain en route, and acclimatise properly without rushing. Other than that, it is good to go!

In conclusion, even if you are a first-time traveller, you may easily finish this journey without worrying about altitude sickness since our 7-day Mardi Himal Trek itinerary is well-designed. Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is unlikely on our adventure as we ascend gradually, gaining 400–500 meters every day. On top of that, our trekking guides are always there to assist you throughout this odyssey, making sure that you are doing okay and safely ascending without experiencing AMS effects.

Is it a beginner-friendly trip?

Soaring at an elevation of 4500 meters, the highest point, a trip to Mardi Himal Base Camp can be easily completed by a newbie or beginner, no matter whether you have prior experience or not. The route is simply well-maintained and facilitated with ample tea houses, hence you won't find any difficulties in adjusting while settling down for the key stop.

Even though some trailheads do include rugged terrain, especially while ascending from Forest Camp - Low Camp to High Camp, it has sidebars and is marked with signboards in the forested section as well. Apart from that, it doesn't include several ascents and descents, and is considered easy as the route has only a few steep sections, so anyone with basic physical fitness can easily make it through.

Preparations Required

Before you head on any kind of Himalayan odyssey, being well prepared beforehand makes the journey hassle-free and successful as well, as, in the end, rather than your experiences, what matters is how well-trained, prepared, and mentally ready the hikers are. Usually, when it comes to preparedness, many misunderstand it as " oh, to be physically strong, getting yourself all out in packing, and so on, but there's more to it. Here are the preparations required and some useful tips for you to consider before starting the journey:

  • Discuss with the pro expert team of the agency, regarding your experiences, health issues (if you have) and hiking pace level, along with your preferences, so the itinerary is tailored accordingly.
  • Do a full body medical check-up with the doctor, and ensure that the body is doing all okay to handle the high altitude and increasing elevation, especially check the lungs and heart. If you have any, take the preventive guidance and medications from the doctor.
  • Engage in the prior cardiovascular exercises, such as jogging, completing 10k steps daily, or if you have a gym membership, then you can do stairmasters, incline treadmill walks, cycling, and slowly strengthen the body, with shoulders, legs, and core workouts, to handle distinct terrains and uphill and downhill sections.
  • Before venturing on this trip, do proper research regarding the tea houses, navigation route, remoteness, local people and their culture and set the mindset accordingly.
  • Please leave your contact number, share your itinerary details, and the agency details with your family members, close ones, and friends, for emergency communication and reach out. Sometimes, the mobile network does fluctuate a lot at higher altitudes, especially from the Low camp, so they do not panic if you are out of reach for a day, or pass the information by agency to the guide, and to you, while on the trail.
  • Ensure that your insurance policy covers all the must-haves, such as trip delays, cancellations, theft, medical expenses, and most importantly, the helicopter evacuation up to 5000 meters.
  • While packing, enlist every essential, according to seasonal variations, and do not miss out on a basic first-aid kit, monsoon gear, like a raincoat, a backpack cover, as the chances of precipitation are always there in the mountain areas.

Is the trek to Mardi Himal family and kid-friendly?

If you are willing to head over to the Mardi Himal Trek with family, including the kids, and want to introduce yourself to the world of the Himalayas, then you are absolutely in the right place! It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for enthusiastic hikers like you who want a quick escape with their loved ones, without feeling any hassle of prior preparations, as the route is comfortable enough, demanding just 3-5 hours of hiking per day. With the perfect blend of cultural encounter, mystic vista of mountains and landscapes, and cosy tea house, Mardi Himal Trekking falls under one of the family adventure trails in the Himalayas.

On the other hand, if you are wondering about the possibility of altitude sickness during this trek, then do not panic, as already mentioned, this Mardi Himal Trek itinerary is carefully crafted, keeping in mind that anyone can easily succeed in this trip - that is why, we've created for straight 9 days from Kathmandu, so you take an gradual ascend with families and kids enjoying the view.

As this trek also meets the Pokhara - the city of lakes, and also the starting point of any Annapurna region treks, you can engage in some kind of extra activities like boating, kayaking, canoeing, which create everlasting memories. From the bustling city of Kathmandu, to the wetlands of Pokhara, to the varied landscapes and highlands, this trek is more than just an expedition, but boosts your love for mountains and cherishing people.

Food and Accommodation

Local Nepalese dishes join various international food options available throughout the route. High-calorie breakfasts like Tibetan bread, chapati, porridge, pancakes, and eggs energise us before each day of trekking. Lunch and dinner consist of Dal Bhat, momos, soups, noodles, pasta, and fried rice. We highly recommend you have "Dal Bhat", which is served with 5 other side dishes such as veg/ non-veg curry, lentil soups, pickles, and rice that can be refilled as much as you can.

The Mardi Himal Trail offers basic lodging, which features simple, cosy rooms with basic amenities. You will find two types of rooms that consist of single or twin rooms with minimal furnishings, with thin mattresses, pillows, and blankets. It is recommended to bring your sleeping bags for additional warmth at higher altitudes.

Most tea houses have shared bathrooms, with some providing hot shower facilities for an additional charge, except at Higher camps because of limited water. For other amenities such as hot showers, laundry, charging, and WiFi, there's nothing to worry about. With the best views, this Mardi Trek caters to everyone's preferences, serving well-maintained facilities. Here are the key details regarding the variations in accommodation to expect along the trail, so you can get prepared accordingly.

Communication, Charging Facility, and Internet Services

Throughout the hike, communication facilities won't be a problem, as the trailhead is well facilitated with telephones in every tea house along the WIFI Facilities by paying some pennies. However, it is highly suggested to buy an NTC SIM card in either Kathmandu or Pokhara with identification validation from the shops, so that, in case of an emergency on the route, you can use it immediately. Just buy 1 SIM card and insert it in a phone, and get a data pack for 1 week, which costs only NRS 120/- and works amazingly in the lower section. Meanwhile, in tea houses, the wifi can only be connected at the dining area after crossing Low Cap via Forest Camp, so make sure to buy a SIM.

Also, take note that electric sockets aren't attached in the room itself, and are only available in the dining area, waiting for a queue to recharge your gadgets, so please bring at least 1 power bank to quickly recharge your phones and cameras when needed. Nonetheless, the communication accessibility won't be a hassle on this trip.

Guides and Porters

During the Mardi Himal Trekking, right from the very beginning, you will be assisted by an experienced, top-notch guide who has served hundreds of hikers in this Annapurna region. They aren't only licensed but also medically guided to respond promptly, in case any uncertainties occur. Hiking with a guide means that you are not just gazing at the mountains and the local lifestyle, but also looking thoroughly at the historical and meaningful significance they carry.

Our guides are free-minded and know how to provide safety and maintain privacy as well. While finding tea houses is quite hectic in peak seasons, they will accommodate you with the best lodging possible. Being on the route every day, they know every highlighted corner and safe route, avoiding avalanches and staying safe at the same time. Our package also covers an experienced guide, with all his meals, salary, lodgings, insurance, and gear, hence you do not have to pay extra.

Whereas our trekking packages do not include porter services, as it is a moderate trailhead, having a porter to take care of your gear is always a great idea, as you can ascend the uphill with ease without any draining journey. So, if you want one, then we can include 1 strong porter at an additional cost that can be shared between 2 hikers with a maximum weight of 22 kgs in total.

Travel Insurance

Although the trail of Mardi Himal represents a moderate-pace level easy hike, the Himalayan journey remains an uncertain adventure. High elevation, uncertain weather, dense forests, and steep rocky terrain can cause unexpected events or accidents. Travel insurance comes into action to support you during unexpected situations on your trip and also helps us to arrange immediate rescue on short notice.

Travel insurance is a safety net that comes to your rescue in case of medical emergencies, the cost of lost gear, and most crucially, emergency evacuation. It makes sure that your budget does not go over the expected amount. Sometimes you may not be able to make it to the trip, or flights may be cancelled; at such a time, your travel insurance can reimburse your expenses too! You may rest easy knowing that the bothersome aspect of planning has been handled, and concentrate on other fun parts of the journey.

Packing Lists

Even though this adventure simply falls under one of the easy treks within the Annapurna region, when it comes to some tips and tricks to tackle the challenges, the first and foremost thing that obviously comes to mind is the packing essentials to consider during any trek in the Himalayas. For sure, you do not have to go head over heels for packing, but there are some considerations that you must include in your packing list before undertaking this trip; hence, here is the suggested gear list.

Clothing Essentials

  • Dry Fit T-shirts and Breathable Hiking Pants or shorts - that can easily soak up the sweat and are lightweight to wear
  • 3 to 4 pairs of light t-shirts - to wear on alternate days, maintaining hygiene
  • Windproof jackets and a Down Jacket or 2 if it's winter
  • Fleece jackets and T-shirts
  • A wide, wide-brimmed hat or just a normal cap
  • Touch screen gloves and thermal socks
  • Comfortable hiking shoes or just normal shoes
  • Scarf or wool knitted mufflers

Footwear

  • Flip-flops or Slippers - to wear while staying at the tea houses
  • Hiking Boots - having a strong grip for ascent and avoiding slippery terrains
  • Woollen socks and cotton socks (both)

Miscellaneous Items

  • Travel Documents, including passports, permits, and travel insurance photocopy (if you have one)
  • 1 waist bag to fit the important gadgets
  • Powerbank, Charger, and Batteries
  • Basic First Aid Kit and Sleeping Bag - if required, it will be provided by us
  • Backpack (60 litres) and Day backpack - 15 to 25 L

Note: These are the only suggested packing gear lists that we highly suggest estimating the weather and the trailheads; however, it is totally up to you what to include and exclude. Just do not go overboard while packing; just pack something that's required, as packing tons of loads can be strenuous to take an ascent if you are opting for the porter option.

Travel Tips

  • Make sure to bring filtered water bottles and water purification tablets to enjoy safe drinking water in the mountains without creating plastic waste.
  • Start preparing your body 6-8 weeks before the trip with stair climbing, hiking nearby hills, swimming, and cycling to increase your strength and endurance.
  • En route, try to consume hot fluids like sherpa stew or garlic soup that help you to warm up the body and avoid the coldness that could potentially lead to altitude sickness.
  • The daily intake of 3-4 litres of water maintains proper hydration because it enables better adaptation to altitude changes and prevents headaches that may occur at higher elevations.
  • Withdraw sufficient Nepali rupees from banks in Kathmandu or Pokhara ahead of your trek because ATMs are not available during the trek.
  • Get a local SIM card from Ncell or NTC in Kathmandu or Pokhara to use during emergencies, as these providers supply sufficient network coverage throughout the trek.
  • Use a power bank to recharge your devices because electricity is minimal at higher elevations. The teahouses will charge you extra for electricity usage.
  • It is highly suggested not to overpack the bag, even if you hire a porter, as the ascent section might be too strenuous for beginners with 10-12 kgs of backpacks. So, pack smartly but in the right way! That becomes useful along the trail and also makes the trip easy.

FAQs

Mardi Himal is one of the peaks in the Annapurna region, located within the Annapurna Conservation Area, standing at 5587 meters and known as a famous, beginner-friendly, short trekking route to its base camp.

The starting point of this trip is Pokhara (830 meters), accessible by driving to Kande or Dhampus, from where the trekking trail begins. However, mainly the trip begins from Kathmandu, if you are a foreigner who has just arrived in Nepal, and follows the air transportation or road pathway to reach Pokhara. This itinerary starts from Kathmandu, with arrival and departure dates, with 4-star accommodation management here in Thamel, Kathmandu; however, if you want, then you can start the trip from Pokhara as well.

The total duration of the Mardi Himal Trekking lasts for 5 to 2 weeks (14 days), depending on the itinerary, starting point, hiking pace level, and acclimatisation days, as there are rapid routes, and many side trips combined route updated, within this territory. Many hikers usually crave to proceed on 5 days rapid version that starts from Kathmandu, involving 6-7 hours of hiking, with a steep descent via Siding soon after attaing to the base camp, which is only suggested for experienced hikers, or those having a limited itinerary.

Meanwhile, a gradual ascent is a must, which demands almost a week of hiking, from and to Pokhara, and 9 days of trekking trail, starting and ending at Kathmandu, with a easy to moderate hike, covering every highlighted corners, with a daily pace of 4-5 hours of hike, and slow descend, which suits every kind of hikers, from beginners to family to senior citizens as well. The full route spans approx. 52 to 60 kms round trip, with daily distance coverage of 6 to 13 kilometres, reducing the risk of altitude sickness due to moderate altitude gain.

The Mardi Himal route basically begins with an elevation of 1640 meters at Dhampus or Kande, and towards Pothana or Forest Camp directly, depending on how your itinerary has been set, and proceeds further passing through Low Camp, High Camp, and reaches the highest elevation of 4500 meters at Mardi Himal Base Camp. However, if you are a beginner or short on time, then you can head to Mardi Himal Viewpoint, which sits at 4250 meters, and is much easier to ascend, demanding 2 to 3 hours of hiking, to reach the viewpoint.

The Mardi Trek is categorised as one of the easy, beginner-friendly and short routes within annapurna region, which demands only 4-5 hours of daily navigation, and coverage of 8 to 12 kms distance, that even hikers with a basic fitness level can commence.

Compared to other isolated or remote trails, the terrain is not so intensely rugged, steep, or features any continuous uphill or downhill walk, making the route quite easy to proceed through. Also, the Himalayan odyssey only takes you to the maximum elevation at 4500 meters, Mardi Himal Base Camp, and does not include any technical sections, alpine walks, or high passes, making the trip easy to navigate. Thus, anyone with a basic level of physical fitness, and bounded by time, can undertake this hike smoothly with prior preparation and training.

Both Mardi Himal Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) stand out to be the lap of the Himalayas, which offer great panoramic views; however, which one suits you the most depends on personal preference, as they both somehow have similar yet distinct features.

While the Mardi Himal Trek is shorter, easy to hike, and somehow is less crowded with some off the beaten trailhead and reaches the highest elevation of 4500 meters, whereas, on the other hand, ABC Trek is longer, demanding more than a week journey, moderately challenging, with well established tea houses, and well marked trails, however it is more crowded and popular, but reaches comparatively to lower altitude of 4130 m above sea level.

In terms of views, Mardi Himal offers the close-up panoramic 360-degree views of the Annapurna range along with other peaks, and suits beginners as well, whereas Annapurna Base Camp Trek lets you immerse in the deep cultural exploration of Gurung, Magar, Rai, and other communities en route, and suits experienced hikers.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) or altitude sickness can be a serious risk while travelling over 3000 meters. Although trekking to Mardi is a beginner and family-friendly trek, it can pose some challenges at the Mardi Himal Base Camp, as it reaches an altitude of 4500 meters.

Our carefully organised 9-day Mardi Himal Trek itinerary has been designed to eliminate all potential risks from altitude sickness. Proper acclimatisation with a daily elevation gain of 400-500m prevents AMS, as we do not travel through any high passes. Climbing high while sleeping low remains the essential principle for overcoming these conditions. You should drink 3-4 litres of water daily while staying alcohol-free. Also, obtain doctor-approved acetazolamide (Diamox) as a preventive measure. Report any symptoms immediately to your guide and prepare for descent if your symptoms grow worse. Your health always takes priority over any view.

Yes, beginners, who have no prior Himalayan experience, or first-time hikers, can easily proceed on this trek to Mardi Himal, which is shorter and less challenging, with no strenuous sections, when compared to other base camp journeys. Meanwhile, even though this trip is a beginner adventure, individuals must engage in proper physical preparation, make comprehensive planning regarding route and itinerary (customisation), matching their pace level, and consider all seasonal packing gears and essentials, on such a high altitude trekking trail.

Before undertaking this hike, it is highly suggested to undergo some physical preparedness and training to strengthen leg muscles and build up the stamina level, for frequent ascent and descent sections, involving steep climbs.

For the preparation, you can engage in cardiovascular exercises, for 1 month, such as treadmill walk (following incline 8, speed 4 km/h for 20 to 30 minutes), cycling, strengthening exercises, for back, core, shoulders, and abs, to build the endurance level, for uneven terrains. However, if you do not want to go to the gym, then you can do stairclimb walk, short hikes nearby, complete 10,000 steps, and home workouts, just to keep the body and muscles active, to walk through varied kinds of terrains.

Right from the beginning of the Mardi Himal Trek, the glimpse of Mount Fishtail (Macchapuchhare) and Annapurna South seems clear while meandering through the route from Forest Camp and Low Camp. Whereas, moving to the higher section, to Badal Danda and High Camp, the view of Mardi Himal, along with the Annapurna range and Dhaulagiri, can be witnessed, whereas, attaining the Mardi Himal Base Camp or view point nearby, the panoramic views of the Annapurna I, South, II, Hiunchuli, Lamjung Himal along with Dhaulagiri massif and Mardi Himal itself shows the breathtaking unhindered vista of the highlands.

Along the Mardi Himal trek route, you can immerse in the culture and traditions of the Magar and Gurung people. Passing through traditional settlements like Dhampus and Siding displays unique architecture with stone-built houses and wooden savings in the windows. While you stay at tea houses run by locals, you can experience Nepali hospitality and cuisine combined with cultural performances.

The trek to Mardi Himal costs depend on a variety of factors, from access to the trailhead (transportation), meals and accommodations, duration of the trip, and the starting point of the trip, and amongst all, the no. of hikers in the group. However, our standard Mardi Trek cost stands out to be USD 799 per head, for a single private trip, however, the price gets minimized to USD 499 per head, if you have more than 12 hikers, in a group, and for the 2 and 3 hikers in a group, the cost is more on the affordable side, somewhere in between USD 520 to USD 555, per head. Meanwhile, if our pricing or itinerary doesn't match as per your estimated budget, then it can be customized as per your demand.

You can go solo on this trek to Mardi Himal due to its well-defined path and tea house facilities situated throughout the trail. Hiring a guide or porter provides beginners with the absolute safest and most comfortable way to experience the newly introduced route. Trekking becomes enjoyable since you don't need to organise logistics or navigate, thus your experience remains relaxing and enjoyable.

This trek without a guide or porter is possible, but hiring their services will enhance your experience. The adventure requires a guide or porter based on safety recommendations. With your guide, you explore shared cultural elements while they show you the way and provide support during any crisis. They can be your best company in the long hours of waking and communicating with the locals.

No, Mardi Himal Trekking is one of the safest and shortest routes in Nepal, where the trails are well maintained, with finely accommodated rooms and amenities. However, one must navigate the trekking trail, with an experienced licensed guide, as there are many open areas, without any side poles, from Low Camp onwards, and forested sections as well, with an avalanches risk at the Mardi Himal Base Camp, hence, the trek is only risk free, when, you head to the trek, along with guide, and itinerary that matches your experience and pace level.

The route basically does not have any health posts or hospitals. If any unfortunate situations occur along the trail, like severe altitude sickness, medical emergency conditions, etc, as you never know what to expect, or unexpected conditions at high elevation, where weather changes frequently, and the terrain changes every single day.

As there is no emergency access available, the only medical assistance is the experienced licensed trekking guide, who assists you throughout, who is medically trained, experienced, and equipped as well, who knows how to immediately respond medically, if such situations occur, and follow the measures accordingly. You just have to trust his guts, response, and calls, whether to rest, and proceed the hike in other days, or require a immedical medical support descending back to the starting point.

Besides, if things gets worsen then, then the only option is the helicopter evacuation; thus, make sure to grab travel insurance that covers your medical bills and expenses, theft, trip delays, and cancellation, to save extra medical costs.

The ideal months for the adventure to Mardi Himal mark March to May, and September to November, where you can expect the idyllic views of the gigantic peaks, stability of the climatic conditions, with a less likely chance of rain or snowfall, making the trek smooth to proceed, and enjoyable at the same time. Even though this trek is categorised as an all-rounder trip, due to high humid temperature and continuous cloud bursts, the trail gets wet and muddy in the forest area, up to Low camp, and is snow-covered, which makes the trip more challenging, and hides away the surrounding views as well.

The Mardi Trek is considered a tea house adventure, which has basic lodging accommodation, or you can say a homestay, run by the locals themselves; however, it has standard amenities such as laundry, hot shower, wifi, charging sockets, and paying an extra amount of fare at higher altitudes. The rooms are basic and simple, which have varied options, from a private single bed, to a twin, to a triple room, which are cosy, and hygienically maintained, keeping in mind the privacy and sanitary health of hikers.

While at the lower terrains, such as Pothana and Dhampus, you can expect rooms with attached bathrooms, whereas, as soon as you enter the Mardi Himal route, only shared washrooms (eastern style) are available, due to limited water sources and lodges. The toiletries items, basic ones, such as soaps, towels, might be available, in some areas; however, for hygiene purposes, it is best to carry your own personal toiletries, like bio-degradable soap, shampoo, and a personal towel, sanitisers, toilet rolls, for personal use.

Every tea house features a wide variety of meal options that caters the taste and dietary choices, across the globe, from western to continental, to asian, to indian and local meals, that are cooked freshly soon after you order. You can also find vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free meals, such as veg dumplings, Greek salad, Caesar salad, veg chowmein, pasta, spaghetti, veg dal bhat set, veg soup (ginger, garlic soups), french fries, sandwiches, vegetable curries and many more, cooked considering vegetarian diets.

Yes, if you prefer, and explore more out of the Annapurna region, then you can combine this trip with ABC, or Ghorepani Poon Hill, or even Khopra Danda, which are popular side trips, within this territory, adding just an extra 5 to 12 days to the timeframe. Or else, you can customise the package, as per your route, itinerary, costing, side hikes (trail), as your choice, with the guidance of our expert teams.
